Bella was a nervous wreck. She wasn’t exactly sure how she was going to tell Jacob she knew he was a werewolf. If it weren’t for Liam she didn’t know what she’d do.
He was back in the rocking chair when she woke the next morning. His eyes were a bright green, which told Bella he’d spent the night hunting. “Morning, sunshine.”
“Morning,” she replied, rubbing the sleep from her eyes. “How long have you been sitting there?”
Liam shrugged. “No idea. Since sunrise, whenever that was. I want to ask a favor of you.”
“Sure, what is it?” Bella asked as she crawled out of bed. Liam had done so much for her it was only fair that she do something for him.
He held out his hand. A tooth on a leather cord dangled from it. “I want you to wear this. Just be careful, it’s old.”
Bella took the necklace and examined it. There were four green glass beads on either side of the tooth. “It’s pretty, but why do you want me to wear it?”
“I just do. It was given to me by someone I loved very much. Call it a good luck charm.”
Bella moved to give it back. “If it was a gift from someone special, I couldn’t….”
He pushed her hand back. “Yes, you can. I’m going to want it back of course.”
“Of course.” Bella nodded. She grabbed some clothes and went into the bathroom to change. She felt honored that he wanted her to wear something so special, but she couldn’t help feeling like he had ulterior motives.
Charlie was already gone, so she didn’t have to come up with an excuse; that was one small thing she could be thankful for. Liam couldn’t go with her, of course, but he promised to stay nearby, just outside the boundaries. It bothered Bella that the usually carefree man was nervous about this, mostly because he knew quite a bit about these werewolves.
The drive to La Push seemed to take forever, and her body tensed as Billy’s house came into view. She had already discussed with Liam the best way to get past Billy. It had seemed simple enough while talking about it; doing it was more intimidating.
Her hand was trembling when she knocked on the front door. “Come in,” she heard Billy call out. “Oh, hello, Bella.” He greeted her with a forced smile.
“I need to see Jacob,” she said in a forceful tone before he could say anything else. “I need to talk to him about his nightly habits,” she said in a way that hinted she knew their secret.
Billy looked surprised but didn’t seem upset. “He’s still sleeping. Perhaps you’d like to come back a little later.”
“No.” She shook her head. “I’ll be waiting at the beach. Send him down when he wakes up, please.” Billy nodded, staring at her with a thoughtful expression. “Thanks,” Bella mumbled, and left. Hopefully she wasn’t making a big mistake.
She went to the place where she had first met Jacob and waited patiently. Her mind wandered and she started thinking about Liam and wondering where he was. He said he’d stay near the boundaries, but she had no idea where those boundaries were.
“Bella!” Jacob’s voice interrupted her thoughts. She tried not to stare at him, but she couldn’t help it. He’d gotten huge! It was almost like he’d doubled in size. “Did you really figure it out?” He looked more hopeful than angry.
Bella nodded. “Yes. You’re a werewolf, and apparently you don’t want anything to do with me anymore.”
Jacob looked genuinely hurt. “No, that’s not it at all!” he cried. “I wanted to see you, but I couldn’t for a bunch of different reasons.”
“Such as?”
“For one, I was forbidden to tell you anything. Of course, I can’t help it that you guessed…but it’s also dangerous for you to be near me.”
“More dangerous than being around a bunch of bloodsuckers?” Bella asked with a raised eyebrow. She didn’t see what was so dangerous. From what she could tell, he was still Jacob, just larger.
“Just take my word for it, it is. I’m just so glad I can talk to you again. I thought you’d never figure it out.” Without warning he swept Bella up into his arms and squeezed her so tight she could barely breathe.
“I had some help,” she admitted when he finally let her down and she caught her breath.
“Really? From who, a Cullen?”
Bella nodded. “Yeah. Don’t worry, he didn’t outright tell me, just helped me put the pieces together.” Jacob’s jaw clenched, and Bella had to admit it frightened her a little. “I wish you wouldn’t do that,” she sighed. “He saved my life, you know. I went to try to find that clearing by myself the other day, and I ran into Laurent. If it hadn’t been for Liam watching over me, Laurent would have killed me.”
“So that’s what happened,” Jacob mumbled.
“You know about that?”
Jacob nodded. “We were chasing him and found his shredded remains. We thought he was killed by the redhead over territory.”
A shiver ran down Bella’s spine. “You mean Victoria is here?”
“You know her?” Jacob looked surprised.
Bella blushed and looked away. “Her mate decided to hunt me last year. The Cullens killed him, so I guess she’s decided to kill me—a mate for a mate. Only I guess she doesn’t know….” A lump formed in her throat and she tried to swallow it.
“That actually makes sense,” Jacob mused. “We’ve chased her away several times already. It’s like she’s searching for a way through our defenses.”
“Yeah, to come after me.” Bella frowned. Now more people were in danger because of her.
It was then that Jacob noticed the necklace she wore and inhaled sharply. “Where did you get that?” he asked. It was like it had materialized right out of his dream.
Bella’s hand moved to absentmindedly play with the tooth. “It’s on loan. I’m told it’s very old.”
“But who gave it to you?”
“Liam Cullen, the one who stayed behind to protect me.”
Jacob suddenly felt a little lightheaded. The necklace around her neck was exactly like the one from his dream. How was it possible? The only thing he could think of was that he must be dreaming about the vampire because he was in the area. He’d have to ask the others if anything similar had happened to them.
It didn’t explain the emptiness in his chest, or the sudden urge to run down the beach when a gust of wind carried a hint of the delicious scent he’d first smelled in Bella’s house, but Jacob didn’t want to think about that.
“We need to let the others know about Victoria,” he said, pushing everything else to the back of his mind. Everything else could be dealt with later. “Hold on, I’ll ask them to meet us somewhere.” Bella waited patiently while Jacob disappeared into the trees for a few minutes. “All right, they’re going to meet us on that road where we ride our bikes,” he said, heading toward her truck.
“So you can communicate telepathically?” Bella asked, guessing.
“Only in wolf form. How did you know?”
Bella gave him a wicked grin as she climbed into the driver’s seat. “In case you haven’t noticed, I’m very good at figuring things out. That, and two of the Cullens—well, three, technically—can do the same thing.”
“Vampires have special abilities?” Jacob asked, surprised.
“Some of them. Edward can read minds. Jasper can read and influence emotions. Liam can do both, and he has a telepathic link with his brother, I’m told.”
Jacob was quiet for a moment. “That changes things,” he sighed. “How common are abilities like that?”
Bella shrugged. “Dr. Cullen has a theory. He thinks each vampire keeps some trait from their human lives. Liam was an incredibly charming empath, who, like me, was immune to some abilities, and smelled rather tasty. I guess Jasper was a bit of a charmer, too.”
“Now I’m really glad you figured it all out. We didn’t know any of this.”
“Did you tell them I was coming, too?” Bella asked, a little worried about how the others would take the news.
“No, but they’ll just have to deal with it.” He knew they wouldn’t come if he told them about Bella just yet. He was a little worried, but he would protect her.
When they reached the road, four scantily clad boys were already waiting for them. Bella’s stomach lurched when Sam opened the door. “Did you tell her?” he demanded angrily. “Did you defy me?”
“No,” Jacob answered honestly. “She just figured it out. And she knows stuff that we don’t.”
“And you think that leech-lover is telling you the truth?” another boy pushed past Sam.
“Yes, I do.” Jacob stood his ground.
“Of course you do,” the other boy snarled. “You’d believe the earth was flat if she insisted on it. Damn it, Jacob, leave it to you to fuck everything up.”
“Paul, cool it,” Sam ordered, but Paul didn’t seem to be listening.
“You’ve endangered us all, and for what? You—you—”
Sam looked at the other two. “Take her to Emily’s while we sort this out,” he ordered.
Bella didn’t want to leave Jacob for fear that something would happen to him, but she followed the other two to her truck. “You gonna be okay?” the one she recognized as Embry asked her.
Bella nodded. “I think so. Is Jacob in trouble?”
Embry shrugged. “Probably not. I mean, he didn’t outright tell you, so he didn’t disobey orders. How did you figure it out, anyway?”
Bella bit her lip, wondering if she should say anything. “A Cullen helped me. He stayed behind to protect me, and he did that when Laurent found me.”
“I’m guessing Laurent was the dead one we found.” Embry didn’t seem nearly as upset as Bella had feared he would be. Jared, the other boy, was quiet.
They arrived at Emily’s, and Embry quietly warned Bella not to stare. She saw what he meant when Emily came out to greet them. She had scars all over one side of her face and neck. Bella couldn’t help but wonder if that was why Jacob said it was dangerous for her to be around him. Would what had happened to Emily happen to her?
She pushed it out of her mind and waited quietly. Embry and Jared didn’t seem worried at all. In fact, they were taking bets on whether or not Paul would lose his temper yet again. “Does that happen often?” Bella asked curiously.
“Only every other day,” Embry laughed.
Bella was relieved when Jacob, Sam, and Paul stepped through the door. Paul had a scowl on his face, but Bella tried to ignore it. “So, Jacob tells me you’re the one she’s after,” Sam said to Bella as he took a seat at the large table in the kitchen.
Bella nodded. “Unfortunately.”
“Actually, it’s rather fortunate,” Sam corrected her. “Now that we know what she wants, it might be easier to catch her. But that also means you should probably start spending a lot of time here at La Push. I’d like to have a little chat with your friend. Where is he?”
Bella shrugged. “He just said he would stay nearby. I could try calling him.”
Sam nodded. “Do that. Tell him to meet me at the bridge, and not to worry about coming onto our land. I’m inviting him.”
Bella asked Emily where her phone was and dialed the number. Liam answered right after the first ring. “Tell him I’m on my way,” was all he said before hanging up.
Bella relayed the message and Sam left. Emily put muffins out on the table, and Bella moved over to stand by her while the four teenage boys devoured them like starving wolves.
Liam was already at the bridge when Sam arrived. His posture was relaxed even as he watched a gigantic black wolf run toward him. The wolf turned into a young man. “You must be the Cullen,” Sam greeted him.
“I am.”
“And you’ve been watching over Bella?”
“While she wasn’t on your land, yes,” Liam answered, wondering what Sam wanted. The young man’s mind was too scattered to read properly, except for the obvious repulsion. “And I’m going to continue to do so.”
“Of course,” Sam nodded. “That’s what I want you to do. I want to make sure she’s safe when she’s not with us. I also wanted to catch your scent so we don’t go chasing after you instead.”
Liam raised his arms outward. “Smell away. I did want to ask one thing of you, though.”
“And what would that be?”
“I know I’m not supposed to trespass on your land, but if Bella is ever in danger and one of you is not near, I would like permission to intervene.”
Sam studied Liam closely while he thought about it. “I’m not an elder, but I suppose I could speak to them about it. Are you expecting any such events?”
“No, but I like to have all my bases covered,” Liam answered truthfully.
“Just remember, I have your scent; so if you harm her, we’ll know.”
Liam chuckled softly. “I’m dead, not stupid.” Sam turned and left without another word. Liam couldn’t help but smile to himself. Things had gone rather well, considering.
It didn’t seem like Bella would be going home any time soon, so Liam went home to find something to occupy himself until she did.
