Aurora reached for the black nightshirt, hurriedly slipping it over her nakedness as if her life depended upon it. Even Erik’s scent upon the cloth seemed to viciously mock her.
She could not believe that he had treated her so cruelly.
Well, he was a criminal after all! What could she have possibly expected? At last, her eyes about him had been brutally opened. She had been a fool to let things go as far as they had with such a dangerous person. A ridiculous silly girl who did not have the common sense of a goat!
There had not been one moment during the last two weeks when she had not missed him, not one night that she had not dreamed of when she would at last get to see him again somehow. And all of the while, he had been planning some sort of sick revenge scheme against her, thinking her the vilest sort of person and twisting their affair into something dark and sordid. And he had not even given her a chance to defend herself or explain...
As she contemplated the situation, her fear hardened into cold rage. Never had she hated someone so much!
Springing up onto her feet, she entered the music room where Erik was playing some mournful tune upon the pipe organ, undoubtedly wallowing in self pity.
Taking the first object within her grasp, which appeared to be some sort of colorful Persian vase, she threw it right at his head. If he had not ducked at the opportune time, his mask would have been knocked right off his sneering face.
With a roar, he stood up, banging his hands against the keys, causing the most discordant noise as he did so.
“Do not test my patience, woman!”
Aurora flew at him, pounding at his chest in fury, uncaring of what consequences might result. He fell back from the organ seat and she on top of him, still beating away at him.
“Did you ever think that maybe there were circumstances that prevented me from being able to see you, Monsieur Genius?” she hissed sarcastically. “Did you ever think that maybe my absence had nothing to do with you or your damned mask? Did you ever consider the possibility that you are not the center of the whole universe?”
Erik stared at her dumbly from the ground, mouth hanging open, undoubtedly in shock at seeing his prim and proper mistress in such a rage. With a snort of disgust, she arose off of him, pacing about the room in a frenzy.
Trying to retrieve some modicum of dignity, Erik arose, calmly smoothed back his hair and merely stared at her.
“Would you care to explain yourself, mademoiselle?”
----------------------
The first week, Aurora was truly indisposed with her monthly time. While she was very relieved that she was not with child, she was also keenly aware that there would be little point in visiting with Erik when it would only lead to frustration for the both of them. She took advantage of the time to stay at home and let all of the rumors die down about her. Too many servants had noticed her coming home in the wee hours of the night. Too many questions were being asked by her Papa about her illnesses. It was for the best to just stay put for a while and do nothing to raise any gossip. She had not thought to contact Erik about the situation as it would only be for a short time and was horridly embarrassing.
But she had not counted on the Baron von Rothsberg to take such advantage of the situation.
The Baron had come calling on her the following night, inquiring about her state of health. Apparently, he had been quite upset at her sudden absence at the theater. Her father had been most pleased to see the devotion of this particular suitor and asked him to stay for dinner. Encouraged with Luciano’s hospitality, von Rothsberg began to make it a habit of coming by to call on her every night.
Luciano Sorelli had always been a very loving father, a big dark Italian teddy bear of a man, giving Sophia and Aurora everything they could ever want as children. And Aurora had always loved her father. But she could not help noticing how his vision of her was changing over the years. She was no longer his prized little girl, but a bargaining chip used to advance the Sorelli fortunes. He had been obsessed with marrying her off to the most advantage for the family.
Not wanting to incur his beastly temper, Aurora went along with her father’s wishes, allowing the Baron to escort her to the park, to art galleries and to restaurants. But von Rothberg refused to go back to the Paris Opera House for he did not like opera nor ballet. Between her father watching her like a hawk and her new suitor never giving her a moment’s peace, she found it very difficult to find a way to either get to the Paris Opera House or to send either Madame Giry or Erik a note without someone seeing her.
And there were many reasons why she was afraid to do anything more under the circumstances.
Obviously, her own association with the notorious Phantom of the Opera would destroy her reputation permanently. She also feared that she might inadvertently lead the authorities to Erik’s hideaway if she were careless. And, for some reason that she could not put her finger on, she was terrified of what her father might do if he knew about Erik. True, she had never heard anything but the kindest words being said about her father, but there had been scandalous rumors about him which she would have had to have been blind not to notice. Rumors of conspiracies and crimes. And she feared her father a little bit, despite her love for him.
Trapped in the awkward situation, Aurora tried to be as disagreeable with the Baron as possible in the hopes that he would stop calling on her. But no matter how many times she would sit in sulky silence, no matter how many times she would babble on about the most inane subjects she could think of, no matter how cold she was to him, he would not be put off by her.
That very night, before Erik had kidnapped her, she had been trying to think of a way to make the Baron go away so that she could get back to her normal life. And to Erik.
------------------------------
“So you think your father shall force you to marry this man, even if you do not wish it?”
“I do not know for sure,” Aurora shrugged with despondence. “ Papa has lost all patience with me because I have already turned down so many marriage offers. But he seems particularly determined to have me marry this Baron. I suppose Papa is so fond of him because of their business dealings. If they like each other so much, I wish they would just marry each other and leave me out of it!”
Erik laughed. Normally, she would have enjoyed seeing him display one of his rare smiles, but his mirth only seemed to upset her tonight. It was bad enough that he had abducted her, tormented her and nearly raped her, but now he was laughing at the horrid predicament that she was in as well! He truly was a beast!
“I am so glad to see it amuses you that I quite possibly will be married off to an odious man who only wants to use me as a brood mare and as a means to make money!”
She was positively shaking with anger.
“Please, Aurora, calm yourself! Arranged marriages are a common enough custom...”
“That is easy for you to say!” she snapped. “You make your own rules and are beholden to no one. And I for one would much rather be an old maid spinster than have to marry that man! Why, he touches me and I just turn as cold as ice...”
Erik said nothing, although he seemed to be in deep concentration about something. Apparently, he cared very little about her situation! Well, why should he? He would not have to endure the Baron!
How could he be so selfish? How could she have been so wrong about him?
“At any rate, it seems my fate is all mapped out for me,” she sighed. “And I am being watched more closely than ever. So I do not see how our...friendship...can possibly continue...”
“There is no reason that this Baron von...what was it? The Baron von Rothsberg, you say? There is no reason that he should come between us.”
And Erik spoke as if nothing at all unusual had happened between them, as if they could just pick right up from where they had left off two weeks ago! He truly was mad!
“I cannot see you any more, Erik,” Aurora stated sadly. “Things are becoming too complicated now. I am not good at lying and deception. And things will become dangerous for you if we go on this way. But I shall always have fond memories of our time together.”
Aurora felt so cold, so horribly cold as she said those words...as if she were merely saying goodnight to one of her faceless suitors.
When Erik grabbed her by the shoulders, she nearly jumped out of her skin.
“What are you talking about?” he asked, his eyes intense with an emotion she did not recognize. “I am the Phantom of the Opera! I have lived the entirety of my life in danger.”
She kept her eyes cast down, unable to face him any longer.
“I think I understand,” he said softly. “This is more than just this Baron and your father, isn’t it? That is not why you no longer want to see me. It’s because of what happened tonight, isn't it?”
Suddenly, the dam burst and her tears began to flow as she felt all of the acute hurt that she had tried to keep under control.
“Do you really think that I am such a shallow individual that I would leave you after catching a glimpse of your face?” she sobbed. “Do you know me so little?”
The silence between them was awkward.
Erik released her shoulders.
“Please forgive my coarseness, Aurora, but besides knowing each other in the physical sense, we still might as well be strangers.”
“Obviously!” she cried out. “Think, Erik! I had seen your face quite well the first time we were together. Did that stop me from wanting you? And I had begged you not to sleep at night in that mask. Why after saying those things would I leave you because of that?”
“Because you were disgusted by me and afraid of me,” he answered quickly. “You were just telling me what I wanted to hear.”
“No!” she argued. “You seem to be confusing me with someone else, Erik! And I do not think I have to say who it is.”
He did not answer to that.
“I have never been afraid of you for your face,” she continued. “And may God forgive me, but I have even overlooked your reputation as a killer. But the way you were tonight...” She shook her head, beginning to cry once more at the memory. “That scared me, Erik. It would frighten anyone to be kidnapped, tied up, and threatened with torture. It was as I never really knew you at all. And the way you did it...with such little respect for my feelings...as if you were making fun of me about....how we were together...”
She blushed furiously, blinking with tears, unable to speak.
“Aurora, no....please...please don’t say that...please don’t cry...I am so sorry...forgive me...please...”
Once Aurora's thoughts took such a dark turn, she could not stop them. Erik had built that horrible leather contraption, knowing that it would sexually excite her. And even when she was afraid for her life, she had felt the wet arousal building up between her legs, despite all reason. He had made her face that part of her nature from the start. Then he exploited her desires in the most callous way that he could tonight. Even if he had not raped her, she felt violated just the same.
Erik tried to embrace her, but she pushed him away from her.
“You must think me the worst sort of whore...” she whispered with sorrow in her eyes.
“You are not a whore, Aurora!” Erik protested loudly, his own voice trembling with emotion. “You must not say that! You are a goddess and I...”
Erik stopped himself mid-sentence as if he were making a physical effort to push back what he had intended to say. She even saw his hand clench into a tight fist with the effort, digging his fingernails into his own palm.
The silence between them was long and horrible.
“I suppose you want me to take you home.”
Miserably, Aurora nodded.
