A/N: So here is chapter Eight. Please, Please Read and Review. I'm starting to hit a little funk and I need my inspiration. Believe ir or not, the reviews are great motivators. It is so awesome to check your story and see three or four more reviews added. It makes the blood pump and you want to write more for people. If the number just sits there, the same, it gets disheartning. So please keep helping me out here guys. I really need the support to get past my little funk.
Thanks all. Enjoy.

Now on to the story.

“I am worried Tumnus.”
Lucy sat down on the top step that led down from the palace. She had not been out of the castle much for the past three days. Tensions were high and people were starting to catch wind that trouble was in the air.
“I know.” He held her hand. “It has been three days. We have heard no word from Aslan, it is colder and people are starting to get scared.”
“If I could leave the palace I could talk to them.” She scooted to the side and faced him. “Maybe I could..help somehow. I don’t know. I feel absolutely helpless being trapped here.”
“You have company here with you.”Tumnus chuckled as he kissed her. “Which I don’t think it has been boring.”
“Well of course not.” She blushed at the hidden meaning behind his statement. “I just mean I want to help somehow. It couldn’t hurt if I go just a little ways. Kale and his men are constantly standing guard. There is even foxes and gryphons.” Lucy pointed the northern most tower of Cair Paravel. “There is one now.”
“I know this is hard.” Tumnus sighed. He wanted to say lets go for a walk or just anything but Aslan said stay with the protection of Cair Paravel. “Maybe we...can..” He hesitated while looking around the palace. “Maybe if we don’t stray too far...”
“We can go for a walk or maybe go check on some of the people?” Lucy was already to her feet and pulling her wrap around her shoulders. “I think that is a great idea.”
“I didn’t say that..” He grunted. She was impossible to keep still sometimes. “But I guess, since you already have your mind set on going, that we can.” He smiled. “As long as we tell Kale or one of the others first.”
“You mean tell them so they can say we will escort you and give me a baby sitter.”
“Not at all. We tell them what were doing and we do it. I can not help if it may cause them to follow or not. It is just the safest and more secure thing to do.”
“Everyone is so uptight though.” She whimpered. “It is like walking with a statue. They haven’t even smiled.”
“I think they are worried about Aslan.” Tumnus held her hand. “We haven’t even gotten a message from him.”
“I don’t think anything has happened to him.” She shook her head. “No.” Lucy pulled on him to follow her. “I think that he is just busy trying to get the information he needs and he hasn’t sent word because it might alert someone or something that could be watching in the shadows.”
“Wow.” Tumnus blinked.
“What?” Lucy looked confused. “It was just my thoughts. That’s all.”
“I know but it was very strategic and impressive. I think king peter has worn off on you more than you realize.”
“But if he were here.” She sighed. “I don’t believe that people would be as worried as they are, even with Aslan gone.”
“Maybe but they have faith in you too. You must never forget that.” Tumnus let his arms wrap around her in hug. She was facing him and smiling. “You are Queen Lucy the Valiant. It is because you are here that people have not lost hope. They know you will help bring about a peaceful end to what ever may come.”
“You flatterer.” She blushed and leaned against his chest. “I still wish Peter was here.”
“Did someone say my name?”
That was Peters voice! Lucy gasped, pulling away from the hug. Tumnus was wide eyed and already looking around. Lucy ran down the steps where she thought she heard the voice coming from.
“Peter?” If he were here? Her heart was fluttering with excitement. “Peter!”
“Right here Lu.” He walked from behind a near by tree. His scruffy hair was in need of a trip but it was him. He smiled and opened his arms to her. “So how about a hug?”
“Peter!” She ran forward and tackled her eldest brother in a hug to end all hugs. “Peter..it is really you?”
“King Peter!” Even Tumnus was excited. “Y..You have come back!” He was hopping down the steps.
“Yes.” Peter smiled and kept his arms wrapped around her. Lucy was crying, but not from sadness. She was overjoyed. “I was walking into an old closet to get some clothes and suddenly I found my self here again.”
“What about Edmund and Susan.” She pulled away so she could get a better look at him. “Did they follow you? Are they here?”
“I’m afraid not. I was the only one to go into that closet.” He sighed. “I thought about going through the trail I came out of but then..I thought I may not be able to get here and back to you.” He smirked. “Although I can see you have made a few changes since I left.”
“Oh.” Lucy smiled and pulled away from the hug. “Yes.” She looked at Tumnus. “He is my husband and mate.”
“Proudly, I am.” Tumnus stepped up beside her. He bowed his head to Peter though. “And I am just as happy and proud to see you back here.”
“Things do not seem well. Where is Aslan?” Peter turned a full circle to look around. “I can also see the guards are very heavy.” He nodded. “Trouble must be a foot.”
“We have not heard word from Aslan for three days now.” Lucy looked down sadly. “How..did you get past the guards anyways?”
“I..” Peter blinked. “Well that was easy Lu.” He chuckled. “I am King Peter. The one called Kale let me through.”
“Kale is a good man.” Tumnus nodded. “He leads the centaur herd that is guarding around here.” he pondered something though. “Although I think there are more coming.” Tumnus glanced up at Peter. “Maybe we should show you to the castle so you can get your self cleaned up sire.”
“I could with a bit of a washing. I suppose I look rather scruffy.” He chuckled. “What do you say Lu?” Peter gave his most handsome smile.
“I think you look wonderful. The news that you are back will surely spread quickly and lift peoples hopes even more.” She nodded. “But you do look a little rough.” She grinned. And you could definitely use a hair cut.”
“Why don’t you head in.” Tumnus smiled and motioned to the castles entrance. “I promise my beautiful wife here a walk.”
“I best say congratulations then shouldn’t I.” Peter hugged her again. “Because it isn’t every day your sister gets married.”
“Thank you Peter.” She grinned wide. “Maybe you won’t worry about me so much anymore and try and love someone your self.”
“Maybe.” He stepped away. “So..you sure you don’t want to show me in?”
“Don’t be silly Peter.” Lucy shook her head. “We will be back. You go do what you need. No one has messed with your things and your crown is waiting for you inside.”
“Alright. If I must but I insist we all sit down to a dinner together.” He started up the steps. “Alright?” Peter asked.
“Alright.” Lucy nodded. “Dinner.” Peter seemed a little off to her but she let it slide as being in shock still from her being mated to Tumnus now. “We will be back.” She waved.
“Come on Lucy.” Tumnus pulled her along quietly. “Lets go see Kale.”
Peter stopped at the top step and waved to them again. His eyes followed the pair until they were out of sight. This was an interesting development. The king turned and went inside though. He would have to see what else was happening here as they did not give him much information.
“Lucy...I..” Tumnus stopped just out of sight of the castle with her. “Lucy I don’t know but..did King Peter act a little odd to you?”
“He did.” She sighed “I think he was in shock about me and you. Plus the others did not come with him. It is probably just as hard on him to be without them as it was for me at first.” She didn’t want to think any other way. Her brother was here and she was happy.
“I don’t know.” Tumnus hmmd. “Lets go see Kale. Maybe he has gotten word from Aslan and just has not told us yet.”
“Possible. He is keeping pretty busy.” Lucy smiled, kissing Tumnus lovingly. “You should relax. Everything is going to be fine. Even peter is back.” She chuckled and pulled away. “Come on now.”
“Fine, yes.”
Tumnus glanced back in the direction of the palace for a brief second. Something in the pit of his stomach felt terribly wrong. Peter was not him self. He would never think of him self before going to freshen up would he? Lucy could of been right though. It might have been shock to see her together with him. Peter didn’t act upset but still.
“Tumnus?” Lucy placed a hand on her hip. “Tumnus come on. You are being too worried. Peter is fine. If it makes you feel better we will talk to him later about what is wrong okay?”
“I suppose but..I think I...” He shook his head. If there was something wrong it would not do to alert the things around you that you are wise to it.” I think I am okay. I am just surprised is all.” He turned and smiled at his lovely mate. “King Peter is back.”
“Yes he is.” She grinned. “And maybe the others will come back now too.”
“That could be possible.” Tumnus slid up beside her and wrapped an arm around her. “But for right now.” He kissed her cheek. “Even though I know you want to go spend time with him and all, I want your company. Call me a greedy love.”
“You aren’t greedy.” Lucy stepped off. “You have a right to request my company alone.” She laughed a little and shook her head. “Although we will have dinner with him later. Don’t you go thinking that I will miss out on that.”
“I wouldn’t ask you to.”
“You are still acting funny you know.” Lucy sighed. “You are putting on a good smile but I see worry in your eyes.”
“Can’t help it.” Tumnus looked ahead. “Maybe when we talk to Kale I will rest a little easier. I really do want to believe nothing is wrong but It is what Aslan said that has me concerned.”
“What is that Tumnus?”
“He said to guard your heart well.” He stopped her from walking and turned her gently so she faced him. Tumnus cupped her cheek with his hand. “I think...I mean..” He nervously looked over his shoulder in the castles direction and then back to her. “I know you want him to be Peter but please, for me Lucy, be on your guard around him.”
“Tumnus ...” She frowned. “Do you really think he could be something bad? He knew his nick name for me and everything. He called me Lu.”
“Queen Lucy.” Kale was trotting up the trail. “I have word from Aslan.” He smiled. “I just got the message.”
“Really?” Lucy looked to Tumnus. “I told you things were going to be fine.”
“That would depend on the news.” Tumnus nodded to Kale. “What is the message?”
“Aslan will be here in a weeks time. He is trying to gather a few of the centaur herds and sone of the cats to help. We are to escort you and Mr. Tumnus to his keep where the army and he will be waiting.”
“What about Peter?” Lucy smiled. “ He said you let him through earlier.”
“King....Peter?” Kale looked confused. “My lady I have been...off gathering the message.”
“What?” Tumnus stiffened. “We may have a problem.”
“Oh no.” Lucy turned and looked to the palace. “You..said..he..said..You let him through. That has to be Peter. How did he know so much if he wasn’t?”
“He is at Cair Paravel?” Kale’s front hooves were fidgeting. “Mr. Tumnus. My men are past that hill. Please take queen Lucy there to them immediately.”
“But..” Lucy shook her head. “No! He is Peter! He even knew your name.” She was fighting against Tumnus, who was trying to pull her off. “Kale listen to me!”
“My lady.” He said it loudly enough to silence her. “If he is King Peter I will know. I met King Peter years ago and we became fast friends. Plus a centaur has a gift of seeing beyond magic masks.”
“H..he is..”Lucy shook her head. “You will see. He is Peter.”
“Come on Lucy.” Tumnus pulled her away much easier. “Be careful Kale.”
“I will.” Kale said.
Kale bowed to them both before taking off in a fast to the palace. The centaur was concerned about his men that were guarding the path. He would check there first.
“Trent?” Kale started to gallop when he couldn’t hear the rustling of the usual leaves. Centaurs were not light creatures. “Trent!?”
His hooves slid on the ground to a stop, jumping from the tail. Kale was horrified at the scene before him. Trent, a palomino centaur, was dead on the ground. He died fighting a strange clawed creature. The claw marks were evident against the golden colored fur.
“Trent.”
Kale shook head. The scent of this strange creature that attacked led right to the palace. The centaur was angry but he had to keep his cool. If that thing was inside and assuming a magical mask he could not alert it to fact he knew yet. He had other concerns to tend to as well. He was off galloping again. There was two others that he had to check. They were patrolling the southern most pass.
“Julian! Tambre?”
He panted, slowing to a trot. His heart was relieved to see the two alive. They turned to face him. They could see their herd leaders hardened expression. Both brown bodied centaurs knew something was not right.
“Sir.” Julian walked closer. “Did something attack?”
“It got Trent.” kale pointed to the trails. “I want you to gather everyone you can and get them to the camp. Mr. Tumnus and queen Lucy are already there. I thank Aslan she is safe.”
“Trent is dead?” Tambre was shaking. “Who did it?” He was ready to go kill something. “Where is it now?”
“Do as I say.” Kale commanded. “Gather the others and go. Cair Paravel is no longer safe.”
“Yes sir!” Both Tambre and Julian spoke.
The two centaurs ran off as quickly as they could. It left Kale there alone and brooding. One of his herd was dead. He wanted to charge up to that castle and attack whatever was inside but he couldn’t. He had people’s lives to think about.
“Can’t let it know.”
Kale calmed him self and sighed. He had to go check out the palace but he couldn’t go alone. If it was a trap or something he would have to be on his guard.
“Sir?” It was a couple of Fox that Aslan had asked to help. “We heard galloping and a commotion.” The first one, Nix, spoke. “Our area was clear so we came to check it out.”
“Nix, Dax.” Kale smiled. “I have a request.”
“Anything sir.” Dax nodded. “Just tell us what you need and tell us Queen Lucy is alright.”
“She is fine, thanks to Mr. Tumnus. What I would like is for you to walk with me to Cair Paravel. It seems we may have a Mimrick on our hands.”
“What!” Nix jumped. “At the Palace?”
“Calm down. If it is one we can’t let on that we know. More so you two can’t. It might be in the shape of King Peter. The queen told me he said I let him pass through but I was away. Plus , if he is smart, and I suspect he is. He will know Centaurs can see through their masks. This is where I need you two.”
“I think I get the idea sir.” Dax shifted his front paws. “We go up to the Palace and get him outside right? So you can see him while you’re off hiding out of view.”
“Right and since we haven’t heard yet we will be all excited that King Peter is back.” Nix barked. “This will make us run off to go tell the ‘good’ news too the masses and keep him from getting close to us at the same time.”
“Exactly.” Kale grinned. “Lets get a move on. If this is a Mimrick ..” He shook his head. “We have to move the queen and Tumnus away while we still have time to a hidden spot without letting it know that we know.”
“We will do our best.” Nix gave a fox like grin. “And we won’t let you down.”
“Keep your selves safe above all else. If you think it catches wind then run. A Mimrick is a nasty thing to fight. Ask my dead herd member.” Kale kept his face hardened. “He didn’t deserve to die.”
“No one does.” Dax sighed. “We go now.”
The two foxes took off in a run. They would act like they were going to the palace to see if Lucy or Tumnus was there. That’s when they would see King Peter and that is when Kale would see if he is genuine or a Mimrick. Kale was following the two. Knew the two had the idea of his plane. He just hoped that nothing would go wrong and bring things to light that didn’t need to be.
The two foxes ran through the path to Cair Paravel. They played off the timing perfect. Kale positioned him self just out of sight but where he could still see.
“Queen Lucy! Tumnus?” Nix was the more clever of the two when it came to speaking. Dax and he decided he would do the speaking. “Hello?”
“They aren’t here.” The form of King Peter stepped through the door. “They went off for a walk.” He smiled at the shocked faces on the foxes. “And...what is the matter? You can tell me.” He even boasted King Peters crown. “I am King Peter after all.”
“King Peter.” Nix and Dax bowed. “You..have returned! We were told you had left.” Nix was doing well. “This is great news to see you!”
“Thank You. I am glad to be here. I just wish my sister would have chosen to stay and visit. Oh well.” He chuckled. “Can’t keep a man and wife from spending time together now can we?” Oh he was good. “Now what is it you need.”
Kale raised a brow and continued to watch and listen. This deception was very good if it was a deception. Nix and Dax barked excitedly. Their tails were swaying and the two, like excited foxes, danced their paws about.
“We were just checking in majesty.” Nix bowed his head. “We must go tell our brothers and sisters. This is truly grand.”
“You two can stay.” Peter smiled. “I don’t mind.”
“We will come back if we can. We have to find Kale and let him know that we are here also. Have to keep guard after all.” Nix nudged Dax. “Come on brother.” He waved his tail to Peter though. “Hail King Peter.”
The two took off in yelps and little howls. They were headed back to the path where Kale told them to meet up at. Kale chuckled at the foxes. He was impressed with their cunning. He looked hard at Peter however. This was not the man he met and made friends with. His instincts told him this. Yet, there not a magic mask too cover him or prove that he wasn’t.
“This could be bad.” Kale turned away from the palace. Peter was headed back inside already. “I will just have to trust my feelings on this until Aslan can hear about it.”
Kale started off for the camp where he hoped the rest of his men were at. They would have to come back and get Trent’s body to bury it later. Right now he couldn’t, for he had to check on everyone else that was supposed to be there and make sure they were safe.
