Edward sat in the chair across from Jean-Claude and considered the problem. His first thought when he heard about Niley was ‘damn, you mean we can’t even count on them staying dead now?’ But as with most of his thoughts, he kept them to himself. So now they were waiting for Anita to return to the Guilty Pleasures where they could formulate a plan of action. It was a waste of manpower...uh…. monsterpower having the entire preternatural community of St. Louis out looking for one missing werewolf.
“So Anita said she was coming back?” Edward asked the vampire and made himself more comfortable in the chair.
“Oui,” Jean-Claude answered. He simply did not understand why Anita had called Edward, knowing that he did not care for ‘monsters’. If given the choice, he was certain Edward would rather kill Richard than look for him. And with morning just a few hours away, he would not be able to keep up with Anita’s and Edward’s planning until hours later. And that trickling of thought passed between him and the man Anita referred to as Death. Now matter how powerful the monsters got, Edward always believed lowly mortal humans had the advantage in the scheme of things.
Anita roared into the office like an early spring storm hell bent on making someone or something pay for upsetting her. Edward didn’t say anything right away, his eyes going to Micah and Nathaniel. Yep, Anita needed to get some new pets. Maybe a goldfish or a hamster? Micah just stared at him with a blank expression on his face, but Nathaniel was all eyes. Yeah, Anita needed a new hobby.
“Did you see the video?” she growled angrily; upset that after a night of searching they were no closer to finding Richard than the night before.
“Yeah, left something to be desired,” Edward answered as Jean-Claude’s second entered the office. “Richard isn’t trying to make a habit of this is he?” he asked sardonically.
“One can hope that is not the case,” Asher replied, his face as pleasant as Edward’s was neutral. Looking at Jean-Claude and then Anita, he said, “I have just had a conversation with Kiskil-lilla.”
Anita had no idea what he was talking about, but Jean-Claude’s expression indicated he did. The Master of the City sat up straighter in his chair and asked his friend, “Are you sure, mon ami?”
“Qui, that is not something you would mistaken.”
“And who is Kiss Kill Lilla?” Anita asked sharply, looking from Asher back to Jean-Claude. They did not need another monster to fight.
“A demon,” Jean-Claude answered. “You have heard of Lilith, no doubt?”
“Yeah, she’s some kind of succubus.” Anita glanced back at Asher whose expression indicated she was right. “What has she got to do with this?”
“She just told Requiem, The Wicked Truth and me that you need to hurry before Niley kills Richard,” Asher answered. “She is trying to push the confrontation.”
“So?” Anita asked.
Edward gazed up at the vampire and said, “So apparently Niley is not acting quick enough for the powers that be.”
“Qui,” Asher agreed. “Richard is the bait but Niley is enjoying himself too much it seems. He must be under orders now to get it over with.”
“That means Richard is in more danger,” Jean-Claude said thoughtfully. Frowning, he looked back at Anita and said, “Richard touched me briefly tonight. He does not want you to get hurt looking for him.”
Anita smiled grimly and said, “No, this has become personal. Niley has to die again, and I hope I’m the one who kills him.”
Edward sitting back comfortably in his chair frowned at her asked, “And then why the hell did you send for me?”
“Because I may not be the one who kills him,” she answered. “Now we need a plan, because if there’s a demon biting his butt, he may be ready to come after me.”
“It seems to be that way,” Asher agreed.
“Well he sure as hell won’t make a play for you with all of St. Louis camped outside your door,” Edward stated with authority. “You can’t get rid of all your,” and he paused to look at Micah and Nathaniel, “friends, but you need to keep the number down. My guess is he will contact you next with orders or directions.”
“That does make sense,” Jean-Claude agreed. “Still we can not let him take Anita without knowing where she’s going.”
“No problem,” Edward said with a cold smile. “I have lots of toys that will help me keep track of Anita.”
“But what if he just decides to kill her when he gets his hands on her?” Nathaniel asked fearfully. “This is a very bad man.”
“I’m certain of it,” Edward agreed. “But he’s a monster now himself, right?”
“Yes,” Anita answered.
“If he kills Anita out right, her soul will escape him. He is going to want to do a ritual killing.”
“When did you get so wise?” Anita asked with a dark smile.
“I’ve always been wise,” Edward said and stood up. “Since Niley doesn’t know me, I’ll be going home with you.”
“He’s been sending his messages here,” Jean-Claude reminded them.
“Taunting you,” Edward assured him. “Once things get serious he’ll be contacting Anita directly.” He turned to Anita. “I can’t promise you we’ll get Richard back, but I can promise you we’ll get Niley.”
“That’s not good enough,” Anita said. “We have to get Richard back alive. No compromise there.”
“All right then. We get Richard back alive,” Edward conceded, although he still had his doubts. Richard had a martyr complex, die the good death, sacrifice yourself for the fair damsel. How in the hell did Anita get herself fixed up with these men, these monsters?
The imp sat on the cot Richard was chained to and looked at the Ulfric’s face in the pale light of morning. Even injured and drugged there was so much power radiating off him, from him, through him. Niley had cleaned the blood off his face and body, and the true beauty that was the man showed through. If Richard Alaric Zeeman ever got loose, he was going to kill Niley. Of course, Niley was beginning to gather more ‘monsters’ around him. The demoness had scared him, and he was now preparing himself to take action against the Executioner. He had even hired a witch to prepare a sacrificial ring. Good luck, the imp thought as Kiskil-lilla appeared beside him. He jumped as the demoness leaned over Richard and laid a hand on his forehead.
Richard moaned softly and turned his head. He was trying to force his way out the drugged state that Niley was keeping him in, and the cool hand on his forehead bit through the almost unbearable heat that was consuming his body. He wanted the pain to end, the fire to go away. The succubus smiled and leaned over the Ulfric’s body.
