Chapter Eight
I glanced at the clock and cursed under my breath. My mother was going to be landing in Port Angeles in a little over an hour and I wasn’t ready. I couldn’t find my favorite blue top or my lace-up boots and Edward still wasn’t there to pick me up and drive me to the airport. I was glad that Charlie wasn’t home at the moment. I was leaned over the dryer in the laundry room in nothing more then a black bra and a pair of blue jeans. Anxiously I yanked clothing out of the dryer and tossed the articles of clothing onto the floor until I found the shirt I was looking for. I righted myself and was in the process of pulling it over my head when I heard the door frame creak. I jerk around and gave an enthusiastic sigh of relief.
“You know, if you and the rest of your family doesn’t stop that I am going to die of a heart attack.” I grouched at him.
He smiled crookedly and leaned toward me for a quick kiss before pushing something into my hand, “Sorry, love, I didn’t mean to frighten you. Here, I’ve found these for you to wear.”
I glanced down at my hands and saw the black lace-up boots that had been missing, “I thought you couldn’t read my mind,” I stated accusingly.
“I can’t and you know that. I found them at my house before I left and thought you might like to wear them considering the fact that its pouring buckets of rain outside.” He grinned at me thoughtfully and looked at me standing there in his favorite blue shirt.
“You look wonderful tonight.”
“Thanks, you don’t look so bad yourself.” I took in the pale blue turtle neck, the black jeans and sneakers, and the tan jacket the covered his broad shoulders. He looked absolutely handsome from the top of his head to the tips of his toes. I could never compete with his perfection.
“We need to get going, what are you going to do with your hair?” He asked quietly. I had completely forgotten that my hair was still twisted up in a towel. I cursed again and I saw amusement play across Edward’s face. “Let me do something with it.”
“You want to fix my hair for me?” I asked almost suspiciously.
“Yes, now come over here.” He grabbed my hand and pulled me into the kitchen where I had left my brush and hair ties. He pushed me down in my chair and began working on the thick, wet, mass of my hair. I prepared myself for the pain of hair ripping out but it never came. Amazingly enough he pulled the brush through my hair without a single tangle and then began pulling it into a French braid with astonishing speed. I was surprised when he told me he was all finished after being seated for little more then five minutes. I glanced in the mirror and stared at my hair in amazement.
“Where did you learn to French braid like this?” I looked at him in the mirror.
He shrugged and looked at his work, “Having Rosalie and Alice as sister has been…handy…they used to have me fix their hair all the time.”
“Wow,” was all I could say and then we were back in motion again. He handed me my boots and steadied me while I pulled them on clumsily. I was barely finished lacing up them up when I was having my jacket pulled on over my arms.
“Let’s get going, it’s not going to take long to get there, but we want to be inside when she arrives. That way she doesn’t have a problem finding us if we show up late.” He flipped off the lights and locked the door behind us. Then we made our way carefully his silver Volvo that was waiting in the driveway.
An hour and thirty minutes later we were waiting by the gate at the airport. We glanced at every face that walked by and I felt butterflies fill my stomach. It would be the first time I had seen my mother in a little over a year and I was wondering if I had changed much in her absence. Had I changed at all? Edward bumped my arm lightly and I looked at him questioningly. He motion toward the advancing group of people and I spotted my mother and Phil right in their midst. They saw us, smiled, and walked over tiredly.
“Hi mom, Phil, how was the flight?”
“Bella honey, I’ve missed you so much. The flight was fine, long, but fine.” She wrapped her arms around me and we held each other not wanting to let go. Edward stayed quiet not wanting to interrupt our reunion. I finally pulled away from her and looked her over.
“You two look tired,” I murmured and gave Phil a quick hug so he didn’t feel left out.
“Oh Phil, this is Edward my fiancé.”
Edward’s hand shot out and wrapped around Phil’s for a quick shake, “It’s nice to finally meet you Mr. Dwyer. I hope the time difference isn’t going to effect either of you too badly.”
“So you’re the Edward huh? I’ve heard a great deal about you, it’s nice to meet you as well.” Phil said in his naturally cheerful way.
My mom smiled at Edward’s politeness and said, “The jetlag shouldn’t too bad. What time is it anyways?”
“It’s eight o’clock. I can’t believe how late you had to catch your plane in Florida.” Edward said shaking his head to emphasize his disbelief.
My mom nodded her head in agreement, “Well I suppose you have to settle with what you get, and that’s what I get for last minute planning. I wasn’t going to come out until the night before the wedding, but I wanted a little extra time with my girl. You have to take what you can get when you trade ticket dates.”
“We should probably get going is we are going to get you settled in.” I laced the fingers from one hand with Edwards and we walked toward the luggage area. They didn’t have much baggage, two suitcases and two carry on bags.
“Bella how have you been?” Renee asked conversationally.
“I’m fine, I’ve never been better. How are you doing? You look fantastic. You’ve lost weight though.” I said worriedly. She had been talking about her rapid weight loss and I was really worried for her.
She smiled at me reassuringly, “Don’t worry about me. I went to the doctor and he said that it’s just from stress. Maybe it’s the fact that I’m losing my baby girl. Oh, nothing against you Edward, I just meant because she was going to be married and have her own life now she wouldn’t have that much time for her parents anymore.”
“I understand Mrs. Dwyer, don’t worry, I’ll make sure she has time for her family.” He looked at her with promise in his honest face. She smiled at him and pulled him into a quick hug.
“Call me Renee; we are after all, going to be family soon. Are you both excited about the wedding? It would seem that the two of you are growing up pretty quickly. Pretty soon you’ll be ready for a family of your own and start doing your own thing with your lives. You won’t be children anymore, you’ll be adults with your own goals.” I felt my heart drop at the mention of a family. Maybe she knew….no that was impossible…nobody knew about it except the Cullens and myself. I swallowed and helped grab her baggage from the luggage area which Edward quickly took from me with a warning glance, and then we made our way outside where it was still pouring.
“Well I can see that this place hasn’t changed much. It’s still soggy and depressing.” Renee mumbled. I shook my head with a smile and popped open the umbrella that I had brought along for them.
Edward set down the bags he had carried and gave me a quick kiss, “I’ll be right back love, I’m going to go and get the car.”
I nodded and watched him retreat into the darkness. Phil nudged me and gave me thumbs up, “He seems to be a very decent young man Bella.”
“You know, I think so too,” I said jokingly. It had been a long time since I had seen them, it was just so nice to finally spend a little time with them after so long. It didn’t take very long for Edward to fetch the car and he quickly parked it in the loading area.
Edward climbed out and walked around to gather the baggage again. Phil looked at the Volvo admiringly and nodded his head, “This is a nice car Edward.”
“Oh, thanks Mr. Dwyer, my family sort of collects cars. You should see the others.” Edward loaded the baggage up and then we all climbed into the dry comforting warmth of the car.
“So do either of you have any good suggestions as to where we should stay? Hotels, motels, or something like that?” She asked from the backseat of the car.
“Mom we’re going to have you and Phil stay with us at Edward’s parents’ house.” I stated turning to look back at them seriously.
“Oh no, we couldn’t impose on Edward’s family like that. We can stay somewhere else and still visit with you.” She insisted stubbornly. I glanced at Edward for a little help.
“Nonsense Renee, my family would love to meet and spend time with the two of you. We have extra rooms in our house that are for guests and it would seem silly to pay for a hotel when you could just stay with us instead. However, if you are really uncomfortable with staying at our house there are a few places to stay. Let’s see there is the Forks Motel, the Manitou Lodge, the Miller Tree Inn, the Olympic Suites Inn, oh and the Quileute Oceanside Resort, but we would rather have you stay with us.” Edward explained as he watched the road. He wasn’t driving as quickly at he normally would because Renee and Phil were in the car.
She was quiet for a moment and I pleaded with her, “Mom you guys can’t stay in some hotel. Just come with us to the Cullens’ and you can both use their guest room. That way we can see each other a lot more.”
“Alright, but only if it won’t be a bother to Edward or his family.”
“You won’t be a bother at all Mrs. Dwyer, I promise.” Edward assured them and gave me a smile.
The rest of the car ride was spent chattering bout all sorts of things that we all thought need to be caught up with. Phil was getting paid pretty nice money as a coach and Renee was going to try her hand a writing a book or two. Things seemed to be going very nicely with them and I was glad that Phil was taking care of my mother. It made me feel better that when I changed she would be alright without me. The one I worried about was Charlie. Since moving out he seemed to depend on my being around, making dinner, and watching cheesy movies with him. He would probably take the change the hardest.
An hour and a half later we were pulling into the Cullen’s driveway. The house was lit up brightly and I could see Renee appreciating the beauty of it. “This is amazing…”
“I’m glad you like it. We’ve done a lot of remodeling and architectural work. But it’s an old house.” Edward explained before getting out of the car to open the door for me and then my mother.
“You’ve got wonderful manners,” Renee observed. Edward only smiled and nodded his head.
“He comes from an old fashioned family. They believe in being polite, the man pays the bill, opens the doors, puts your coat on, oh and lets not forget fixing your hair in a hurry.” I pointed to the beautiful French braid that my hair was in.
Phil chuckled and walked around the car to help gather the baggage, “You’re talented; if I had tried to do something like that I would end up putting her hair in knots.”
Edward just chuckled and led the way to the front door. I opened it up for him, because his hands were full of luggage, and held it open so they could file into the spacious living room the included the entire down stairs of the house aside from the kitchen/dining room set up. Both Renee and Phil walked in and looked around in awe at the amazingly expensive furniture and décor. The large crystal chandelier sparkled catching my mothers gaze instantly.
“This is absolutely beautiful. I had no idea that your family was so wealthy Edward.” She murmured stunned by the beauty.
“Edward is that you dear?” I heard Esme’s voice carry into the room moments before she walked into the room. She wore a beautiful outfit that included a pale pink dress shirt, dark pink slacks, and matching high heels. Her caramel hair was twisted up with bobby pins in an amazing perfect and beautiful fashion. “You must be Mr. and Mrs. Dwyer! It’s wonderful to have you in our house. I’m so glad to be finally be meeting you.”
As if on cue the others drifted into the room looking utterly normal and perfect. Each used their manners and even the ever joking Emmett looked as if he were a proper teenager. Everybody was there except for Carlisle who was working a PM shift at the hospital. My mother seemed to notice, “Where is your husband Mrs. Cullen? I’ve met him once before, he was a very nice man.”
“Please call me Esme; we are going to be family after all. My husband, Carlisle, is finishing up his shift at the hospital. He should be home after while. How was your flight?” Esme ushered everybody into the living room to sit down.
“Oh it was fabulous. I didn’t remember how long the flight takes though.” Renee sat down beside me and patted my knee affectionately.
“Dear, where are my manners,” Esme chided herself, “I’ve completely forgot to introduce the rest of the family. This is Rosalie she is our youngest. We adopted her and her twin brother Jasper,” she motioned her hand toward the chair where Jasper sat quietly, “When they were just eight years old. We adopted Emmett, Alice, and Edward right around the same time.”
“Goodness, you must have amazing patience! Raising five children around the age of eight seems impossible.” Renee stated amazed.
“I suppose I do quite a bit of patience, but the reason we gat along so well was because Carlisle and I wanted children very badly and I was barren.” My mother’s face fell and she wasn’t sure what to say. Esme smiled and shook her head, “Please don’t feel badly. We don’t let things like that bring us down around her. No matter what, these five precious creatures are our children.”
Phil chuckled, “You are remarkable people. Many cannot get past the differences in DNA. They get caught up with the fact that the children didn’t come from their own physical conception.”
“Thank you very much.” Esme cleared her throat and turn to Edward, “Dear, perhaps you should show the Dwyers to their room so they can freshen up and get some rest. There is a four hour time difference between out locations, and I am sure that it’s very trying.”
The four of us stood, Phil and Renee wished them goodnight, and then we headed up the wide staircase. We ended up in front of a door on the second story that Edward hurried to push open. I didn’t recall seeing the room before, but being around Edward I understood why not. He was always capturing my attention and pulling me away from conscious thoughts. We walked into the room and my mother gasped.
The room walls were a pale green with a thin strip of forest wall paper around the top of the room. The bed was a king sized monster covered in assorted shades of green. The bedspread was dark green and very soothing. All of the furniture was built out of thick pine wood and flowed soothingly with the greens. It was very foresty and comforting. There was a door on the far side of the room that was either a closet or bathroom, of which I wasn’t sure. The room was amazingly beautiful.
“Oh my, this is wonderful!” Renee said enthusiastically.
“My mother like remodeling and decorating. Each room has some sort of a theme.” Edward set down the suitcases and headed for the door, “If you need anything please let one of us know, we’re more then happy to help.”
Phil sat down on the bed and yawned tiredly, “Thanks, this is a great room; very comfortable.”
“You’re welcome, sleep well.” Edward murmured and walked from the room to give us some privacy.
“Alright Mom, Phil, if you need anything let me know. I’m going to be staying here so just tell me okay? I’ll be in the room at the very end of the hall on the third story.”
“Oh, are you and Edward going to be…sharing a room?” Renee inquired lightly.
I was silent for a moment and then nodded my head. I was sure they would find out sooner or later. What was the point of lying?
“Yes we will be, remember it’s the last door on the third floor at the end of the hall. If you need me please come and get me.” I hugged her tightly and she squeezed me as tightly as she could. I sighed and then waved good-bye, “Sleep well.”
The next morning I walked down stairs and was surprised to see that both my mother and Phil were gone. The Cullens where bustling around the kitchen cleaning up dishes and putting away extra food. Edward has set a plate aside for me and he hurried to place it on the table so that I could eat. The smell of it made my stomach rumble and I hurried to take a bit of the delicious smelling bacon.
“Where did my mom and step-dad go?” I mumbled with a mouth full of food.
“They went into town a while ago to do some window shopping, they said something about needing to buy a few more wedding presents or something like that. How did you sleep?” Edward questioned sitting down to rub my back as I ate.
“I slept fine, what did you do last night?” I muttered around a piece of French toast.
He watched me in silence for a while and then smiled crookedly down at me, “I lay in bed for the majority of the night until Alice came to me with information about our honeymoon. Then we were planning a few extra things for the wedding until your mother and Phil woke.”
I hadn’t even considered going on a honeymoon with Edward. I knew that I had a job and now an unborn baby to worry about. A honeymoon seemed like a waste of time in a way. What information did Alice have about a honeymoon I didn’t know about?
“Really, she had information about our honeymoon, hmm? I didn’t even know we were going on a honeymoon Edward.” I pushed the remainder of my breakfast away. My stomach was doing little flip flops that I wasn’t used to experiencing.
“I was having a bit of a tough time trying to pick a place for us to go. Carlisle said that because flying doesn’t scare you or put you under stress that you can fly. So I was considering three different places. France, Ireland, and Venice where the ones we were going to choose from.”
“Uh huh, and what information did you have for him last night Alice?” I turned my gaze on her and waited for her to start talking.
She smiled excitedly and began to ramble, “Well you see Edward thought it might be nice to go to Venice so that you could see an opera and enjoy the beauty of all that Venice has to offer. But he was worried it would be too warm there. I had a vision about your honeymoon and three fourths of the time it’s going to be raining, so you can do all sorts of things during the day and night without risking exposure.”
“Isn’t Venice a little close to Volterra? What about the Volturi and the fact that I haven’t been turned yet? Or the fact that I am carrying a vampire’s baby?” I sputtered, all of a sudden worried about being so close to them.
“Don’t worry Bella, I’ve told you that I have already seen it. You’re going to have a great time and everything is going to be alright. Try to enjoy it.” Alice exclaimed excitedly.
“Wait, Carlisle, aren’t I supposed to have monthly check-up every month? If were gone for a month there is no telling what will happen with the baby.”
Carlisle walked over and took a seat beside me, “You’ll be fine until you get back. The monthly check-ups are to make sure that you are on schedule with your pregnancy and that there are no problems. We’ve already done a check up on you and you won’t need another until September twentieth or so. You’ll be alright.”
Just them some thing came to mind and I want to ask him, but I was too embarrassed to do it in front of the family. They would probably hear it no matter what anyways. I sighed and looked Carlisle dead in the eyes, “Is it alright to be physically intimate while you’re pregnant?”
Something clattered beside the sink and I heard a snort of laughter. I was betting that I knew who it was who found the question so funny. I narrowed my eyes and shot a look of hatred at Emmett’s rumbling back. Carlisle gave him a disapproving look as well and nodded his head, “It’s perfectly safe and you don’t have to worry about it in certain circumstances. If your cervix gets bumped when you are intimate and it causes bleeding normally I would advise using caught so that you don’t cause any problems. But other than that there really isn’t a problem.”
“Thanks,” I turned my gaze away from his. My cheeks felt as if they were going to sear from the heat of my embarrassment.
Edward chuckled and grabbed my hand, “Are you interested in watching a movie?”
“Depends, which movie do you want to watch? I don’t want to watch anything sad or scary.” I stated pointedly.
He pulled me up out of my chair and tugged me toward the living room, “I think you’ll like this movie. Have you ever watched the movie Nine Months?”
“No what’s it about?” I asked. The title of the movie didn’t even click in my mind when I heard it. Edward chuckled at my ignorance and forced me to sit down on the couch.
“The movie is about a man and a woman who accidentally get pregnant. Huge Grant doesn’t know how to take it and he panics. Julian Moore is happy about it and then she feels like Huge isn’t responsible enough. You just need to watch the movie. It’s really good.” Edward put it into the DVD player and flipped the TV on.
