I heard someone come down the stairs. I assumed it was Charlie and rolled over, so the kitchen light wouldn't shine in my face. Almost immediately I was asleep again. And then, before I could even wake up, there was a hand on my shoulder, pressing me flat on the couch. I opened my eyes and barely had time to register Jacob's face in the dark before his lips were on mine. They were as hot as I had expected last night, and I pressed myself against them with a feverish enthusiasm. His hands held me down as he swung one leg over me, trapping me under him.
One hand released me, shoving my loose shirt up and over my bare breasts. He held one in his hand, and where his skin didn't touch, the cold air raised goosebumps on my skin.
“Jacob-” I started, but my voice was muffled. I could feel his hips grinding against mine. Warmth pooled in my belly, but I forced it down.
“I- I can't,” I whispered. He stopped, his lips only centimeters from my own. “I'm sorry.”
In a moment, his warmth was gone. He slid to the floor, his back to me. I didn't say anything. I didn't know what to say.
“He's up at the house,” Jacob said after a while. “He's waiting for you.”
“No, Jake, that's not-”
“Don't worry about it. I've seen this coming from the start.”
I reached out, cupping his cheek in my hand and turning him to face me. He didn't resist, but his eyes wouldn't meet mine.
“You're killing me here, Jake. What makes you always so sure I'll go back to him? Don't sell yourself so short.”
“Oh, so you choose me, but sometime between last night and this morning you've found the joy of abstinence, is that it?”
I groaned.
“Jake, what time is it?”
“Almost eight, why?”
“Because Charlie's going to up any second. There's no need to traumatize him like that.”
As if to emphasize my words, a door swung open upstairs, and we both heard footsteps in the hallway.
“See? We could be scrambling to get dressed right now.”
“So you're really.... you're really not going to leave?”
I bit my lip.
“I don't.... I don't think so.”
“Well, think about it. I know you loved him first, and I know that's important, because I can't imagine loving anyone but you. But think about it. Think really really hard, and tell me what he has that I don't.”
I shook my head. It was an unfair comparison. I couldn't compare Seth to Alice, or Sam to Carlisle. Sure, the Cullens were rich enough to use money as scrap paper, but I never cared about that. In fact, being with Jacob was comfortable simply because I knew he wasn't going to drop any expensive gifts on me.
There was just one thing left, one single thing Edward could give me that Jacob would never be able to.
“He can make me live forever,” I whispered.
Jacob's skin went cold under my fingertips, the blood draining from his face.
“No....”
My fist slid into the groove in the wall, and I withdrew, hand coated in plaster. I resumed pacing, reaching the opposite wall and punching it, too. Pace, punch, pace, punch. I had a comfortable pattern worked out, and it was keeping my thoughts at least reasonably in check.
It was stupid to look out the window. If she was close enough to see, she was close enough to hear and I would certainly be able to smell her. I shoved down the oddly human urge and resumed pacing. I'd do this for a few weeks and then I'd leave. Forever.
Jacob's hands gripped me with bruising strength.
“You can't!” he shouted. “How could you even think of such a-”
“Jacob Black!” Charlie's voice came booming from the stairs. “You let go of her this second!”
Jacob froze, as if he hadn't realized he was touching me at all. And then, his fingers relaxed and his hands dropped to his sides.
“Sorry,” he mumbled.
“I don't even begin to know what's going on with you two, Jacob, and I'm sure it drives you a lot crazier than it drives me, but if you start getting into that kind of nonsense, I'm going to make the next trip to your house with the sirens on, got it? And I'd hate to do that to your dad as much as I'd hate to do it to you.”
“It's okay, Dad,” I whispered, “It's not his fault.”
“That's what they all say, sweetie,” Charlie said, making his way into the kitchen. Jacob turned back to me.
“Are you alright?”
“We're not going to have to go to the emergency room, if that's what you're worried about.”
I inspected the forming bruises.
“Just as accident prone as always. This is what I'm talking about. If I was.... you know, immortal.... I wouldn't have to worry about this kind of stuff. Or tripping, or getting hit by cars, or any of the crazy stuff that happens to me between waking up and falling asleep.”
“Yeah, all you'd have to give up is food, respect for human life, body heat, that sort of stuff,” Jacob snapped. “Oh, and you'd smell like a leech and be repulsive to the touch, but other than that nothing would change, right?”
“Easy for you to say! You can heal in a second and fight off anything that comes your way, and you won't get any older for years to come! Why should I be the only one who gets old??”
“The only one? Bella, you aren't the only one who does, we're the only ones who don't. You think I wanted this? I've told you a thousand times I didn't ask for this, and I'd give anything to go back to normal. I'm gonna be sixteen until I'm fifty!”
“Sixteen, right. Tons of sixteen year olds are ten feet tall, and most of them are ripped like you. When you're fifty, you'll still be hot. Big whoop. When I'm fifty, I'm gonna be fifty.”
“I can't believe we're even arguing about this.”
“I can't either. It's not even your decision.”
“Not my- Yeah, you're right, it's not my decision, but if you told me right now that you were planning on burning a building down, I'd argue with you on that decision, too.”
“It's possible for them to live without human blood, you know.”
“Yeah, and it would be possible for us to live on nothing but vegetables, too. How about you try that for a while, see how long it takes you to give into a nice, tasty burger, and then imagine how long it would take you to kill someone.”
“Cows aren't people.”
“The point is, while you're planning out your stupid little eternal life scenario, imagine the rest of eternity eating nothing but salads and tofu. Think you could do it?”
“If someone's life depended on it, yes.”
“We'll see how long that lasts once you're a leech. They think differently than us, you know.”
“Like you would know.”
“So I guess that guy we chased off you in the meadow was going to ask permission first, right?”
“You can't judge all of them by the few you met!”
“Why not? You are!”
I crossed my arms, glaring at Jacob.
“Maybe I'll talk it over with Edward. He'll be able to tell me how hard it is to resist human blood, right? After all, he slept in my room every night and managed not to kill me in my sleep.”
Jacob's jaw set.
“Fine! Go find him, I'm sure he'll be damned happy to see you. If you decide to come back, take a shower first, I don't want you stinking up my house.”
“I'll be sure not to,” I snapped.
“Fine. If it means anything, I hope you make it away from him alive.”
“Gee, thanks for the concern. Now if you don't mind, I'm going to go put on something presentable.”
“Turtlenecks are in season.”
“Goodbye, Jake.”
“Bella-” he started, but I wasn't in a listening mood. I stomped up the stairs, leaving Jacob to deal with Charlie on his own.
In my room, I dug through my clothes, trying to find something, anything, that Alice had bought me. I finally found a bag of wrinkled blouses in a corner of my closet. I pulled one out, inspecting the pattern. It smelled like mothballs. Disgusted, I threw it back into the bag and shoved the bag back into the corner. This wasn't a date, for crying out loud. I should be able to wear the same torn jeans and t-shirt I wore when I was hanging out with Jacob.
Just a conversation, that's all. And then I'd come back and everything would go back to normal. I'd convince Jacob not to be such a goddamn joykill, we'd get my window fixed, and I'd go back to knowing exactly who it was when footsteps landed on my floor at night.
Right.
I pulled the curtains closed, but I had barely turned my back when a breeze blew in. Glaring at the open window, I balled up my clothes and headed for the bathroom.
A breeze blew through the open window, freezing me in my tracks. Her scent was there, clear as day. I couldn't see her yet, but I could hear the sound of an engine. It wasn't her truck, but there was no scent of her father or the wolf-
A bike appeared from behind the trees, tearing down the driveway. The tiny, helmeted figure on top looked much too much like Bella.
By the time the bike came to a halt, I was already outside. Her scent was unmistakeable. When she pulled her helmet off, waves of it came tumbling out with her hair. The taste of venom filled my mouth, but I ignored it.
“What is that?” I asked pointedly.
“It's a bike. It's mine. I learned to ride it after you left.”
“Why? Why would you do that? With your luck, why would you risk leaving the house in anything short of an armored car?”
“Why do you care? You're the one who up and left. Even if I had cracked my head open on the road, you might never have found out.”
I winced at the image. I'd considered the possibility of returning to find her dead, but never like that.
“But Charlie would have known. How could you do this to him?”
“Don't even try to make me feel guilty about leaving people who need me. You have no room to talk. Absolutely none.”
“I know.” I hung my head, suddenly ashamed to meet her eyes. “I saw- Jacob showed me, I mean, I saw what happened to you. What I did to you, when I left. I.... I didn't know.”
“Of course you didn't. You left and then you never came back. How were you supposed to know? How could you possibly be expected to know anything that goes on here in Forks? It's not like you could just pop in whenever you wanted and read everyone's minds!”
“You don't understand!” I looked up, glaring at her now. “You think it was easy to just pick up and leave? To watch the sun rise every morning and know I was never, ever going to see you again? Not knowing where you were, what you were doing, if you were safe.” I paused, trying to keep my voice low. “I have been going crazy trying to avoid this place. If I had come back, even for an hour, just to check.... I might not have been able to leave again.”
She was regarding me warily.
“Why?” She asked slowly. “You have no friends here. The weather's crap, and there's nothing to do. What on Earth could possibly keep you in Forks?”
“Bella. You know you already know the answer to that question.”
I shouldn't have done it. But I couldn't help it. Months of longing for her crashed down on me all at once, and for the second time that day, I felt my lips press against hers.
I pulled her close to me, burying my face in her hair.
“Nothing could keep me away from you forever,” I whispered. “I thought I could protect you by leaving, and taking my world with me. But you've found a whole new danger to court, and it is so much worse than me. I should have never left you alone.”
Her breath came in gasps, and I realized she was crying. Her fingers clutched the front of my shirt, and I held her close, letting her sob into my chest.
“You did still love me,” she said when her breathing had evened.
“Oh, Bella, how could I ever stop?”
“And the whole time.... you would have come back....”
“I swore I wouldn't,” I admitted. “But I couldn't stay away from you.”
Her breath caught again, and she held it in, trying not to cry again. I stroked her hair, her sweet scent filling my senses.
“You don't have to cry anymore. I promise that I won't go again, not unless you send me away. But I'll never be far, never again.”
“No, no, you will,” she said quietly. I braced myself.
“Why?”
“I- I didn't believe in you,” she monotoned. “I was stupid, I didn't have faith in you. And I, I-”
Her breath came faster, like she couldn't breathe.
“You and Jacob?” I asked quietly. She nodded quickly, trying not to hyperventilate. “I already knew, Bella. He came here last night. We had.... a talk.”
“I'll understand if you don't forgive me. I knew that I shouldn't, I knew I should wait for you, but I thought you'd never come back, there was no reason for you to ever come back-”
“There's nothing to forgive. You did exactly what I had hoped you would do. You went on with your life. I ruined you once when I left, and now I'm afraid I've messed everything up again.” I paused. “Though, the way I pictured it, you weren't trying to kill yourself at every turn. Motorbikes, riling up young werewolves-”
“Killing vampires.”
“What?!”
She hastily told me about Victoria and Laurent. I sank down onto the porch steps, preternatural legs unable to hold my weight.
“I had no idea. I mean, I knew you were a danger magnet but this, this is just absurd.”
“That's what I came to talk to you about.”
“Getting you an iron suit to wear around?”
“Pretty much.” She looked me straight in the eyes, her shoulders squared.
“I want you to make me a vampire.”
Yay, back from my hiatus! I've had lots of stuff to do BUT I didn't die in a plane crash so I guess I can start writing again. This chapter might be a little bit crazy because my own love life is currently tearing me to shreds. ^_^
You know what would be great? For this chapter, instead of reviews, I need comments like “You're better off without him” and “She's obviously a slut.” If you don't know the situation, make one up! And then comment on it!
