Chapter Eight.
Three weeks went by since she moved there. She had several visits by the ghost as in putting her under the covers. The job was still really good and her Italian millionaires didn’t come to the states, which would require her presence. She got used to being bugged by Jacob at least once a day about moving away from the house she bought.
It was the end of her third week there and the next day would be her first day off since she came there. She was at the desk waiting for the night dispatcher to come in and relieve her for the night. She glanced at the clock to see it past six-thirty in the evening. She grabbed her cell phone and dialed her number. “Christie, where are you? You’re supposed to be here an hour ago. No babysitter, couldn’t you get your mom . . . she’s sick? You’ll come in tomorrow morning and take over for me. I can handle that. Okay, see you tomorrow morning.” She closed her cell phone and looked at the phones hoping no one would be calling in emergencies tonight. She knew who would be expecting her to be online that night – Chicago Gentleman.
She didn’t even have his phone number nor his e-mail address beyond the chat room, she didn’t know how to contact him. She pulled her sister’s phone number up and dialed it. “Hey sis, listen, I’m in a huge bind here at the station. The night dispatcher can’t make it in tonight, so I’m covering for her. Yeah, I know I will most likely get a migraine out of this but I need you to do me a favor sis. Tonight when you are in the chat room with the others, let Chicago Gentleman know that I won’t be on tonight that I’m tied up with covering the station for the night dispatcher and I’ll talk with him probably tomorrow night? Okay, thanks sis, I owe you. Okay, take care. Love you, bye.”
She put her cell phone away and wondered what she could do for dinner there. She grabbed the take-out menus of all the places that they ordered from during the day if they were not going to the diner down by the corner. She decided to get some grilled chicken and hope that they would undercook some of them so she could reheat it in the microwave later on that night. She called them up and told them her order and also to undercook some of the chickens which they refused to do. She understood their reasoning and accepted it as is. After she hung up the phone, she had to answer the phone for an emergency call.
It was only an hour later, she heard a tap on the door. She turned around to see Edward standing there holding a small tub of chicken. “Hi, is that for me?”
“Yes, I took care of the bill and tipped the guy good.” Edward said, with a smile on his face.
“Thanks, I’m starved.” Tamia replied, as she opened it up and started to bolt it down.
“Slow down on your eating, Tamia. You’re bolting the food.” Edward said, as he leaned against the door frame.
“Sorry,” Tamia said through a mouth-full of food. “You got to eat fast or a call might come in while you’re chewing and got to be gross spitting food out of your mouth.”
Edward smiled. “So when will she be coming in to relieve you?”
“Seven-thirty tomorrow morning.” Tamia replied, as she bit into the chicken again.
“Good, I’ll take you out to breakfast then.” Edward said.
Tamia swallowed her piece as she looked up at him. “Are you joking with me? I’m a good twenty years your senior, Edward.”
“So, what? I don’t care about how old you are, Tamia, you are a friend and friends do share meals with each other.” Edward retorted. “Besides, mom would be rightly pissed if I didn’t at least take you out to breakfast tomorrow morning.”
“What about school?”
“I have late classes, I can handle getting myself over to the campus.” Edward stated.
Tamia smiled before she took a call, which turned to be not really an emergency call, just a heads up alert about a small bonfire done by some kids in the woods. “Now, hopefully, I can finish eating couple more pieces of chicken before I have to put them in the fridge for later.”
“And I better get going before my mom calls me.” Edward said, as she walked towards the fridge to put the chicken in.
“Sure, thanks for taking care of the chicken for me, Edward.” Tamia stated, as she put the chicken in the fridge and raised up to see no one standing there. “That’s weird, he was here a second ago. I guess he didn’t follow me back here.”
Tamia dealt with the rest of the night only pausing at midnight to pop one of her migraine pills, to hope to push it away. It was one in the morning, when Dr. Cullen came to visit her. She looked at him and told him about her migraines that she would get. He asked a few questions of her about what causes them and what type of medication she uses to get rid of them.
Tamia showed him her pills. “I use that when I start to feel the pain, if I do not take them till later, I’d need a shot of pain killers and have a friend stay close by as I sleep the pain off.”
“What spur the migraines?” Carlisle asked, as he handed the pill bottle back.
“Almost anything, they never could figure out what it was so I could avoid doing it.” She replied.
“So anything could cause you to get one?”
“Yes, since I got here. I haven’t really needed to use the pills at all.” Tamia replied. She didn’t let him know that she took one an hour before he arrived. She didn’t want to worry anyone with it.
“Well, take care.” Carlisle replied, as he walked out of the station.
Tamia continued on with her nightly duties till about 5 in the morning when she started to feel the oncoming signs of a migraine. She knew she had to have the night girl come in soon as this migraine will be very hard on her as the red spots sparkled in front of the computer screen. She kept herself occupied hoping that she’ll be relieved shortly.
~~~~~~~~~~~
It was 7am, when she heard a knock on the side of the door. Tamia turned to see Captain Swan standing there. “Morning, Tamia.”
"Morning, Charles." Tamia replied, looking at him as she took a sip of her coffee.
“This is like the first time I see you in here this early?” Captain Swan said.
“That’s because I was here all night long.”
“What?”
“Yeah, Christie couldn’t find a babysitter for her child last night so she couldn’t make it in last night, though she could have came in when her husband came home from work last night at 11pm. She never did call me to see how I was doing?” Tamia stated.
“Let me see if she’s home and able to come in now.” Charles said, as he went to his desk and called Christie up. Tamia glanced over to his desk to see him nod and a few moments later he hung up the phone. He got out of his chair and walked over to her. “Why don’t you take off right now? She’ll be in at 7:30am. This is after all supposed to be your day off. Now go on home and relax.”
“Okay,” Tamia headed for her locker and as she passed Charles. “There is some chicken that I got last night still in the fridge, all you need to do is heat it up in the microwave and enjoy. One to two minutes should do it.”
“Okay, thanks.” Charles watched as she walked out of the station.
Tamia headed to her truck somewhat expecting to see Edward leaning against the truck or maybe Jacob, but neither was there. She climbed into her truck and pinched her nose as she tried to concentrate on starting the truck up to head for home before the migraine got to the point where she couldn’t do anything but go home and try to sleep it off.
She drove home and hoped she could get to the bathroom before she got sick as she had to stop by the road and open her door to get sick on the road, before heading for home. She climbed up her stairs and into her home. But by then, the migraine was so strong, it sent her to her knees in pain. She thought about calling Dr. Carlisle but he was at work. She rose to her feet and struggled to climb the stairs hoping she could get to her bed, so she could try to sleep it off.
~~~~~~~~~
Edward walked into the police station, he knew that her truck was not there. He had to ask if she had gone home or to the diner. The officer told him she went home and she didn’t look too good. He hurried as fast as a human could go out the door, his phone in hand. “Mom, is Emmett or Jasper there? I tried their numbers but their phones are off. Tell them to go over to Tamia’s place, the officer here at the station said that she didn’t look good and he thinks she’s sick. Okay, I’ll be there shortly.”
Edward climbed into his car and drove as quick as he could back to Tamia’s.
~~~~~~~~
Emmett and Jasper rushed over by foot and rang the chime. Jasper looked in the window to see Tamia lying on the stairs barely moving. He said, “We owe her a new door.” And slammed his foot into the door and rushed up the stairs towards her side. He bent to her side and whispered gently. “Tamia, are you okay?”
Tamia glanced up to see Jasper gazing down at her and then she could see Emmett walking away from the damaged door. “My head . . . hurts, Jasper.” She whispered.
Jasper placed his hand on her forehead searching for any injury. The ice-cold touch of his fingertips made the pain fade away till he moved his hand. Jasper looked at her. “I don’t see any injury.”
“Migraine.” She whispered, as she made a grab for his hand and once she caught it, she placed it flat on her forehead. “That feels good.”
Jasper looked up at Emmett. “You better carry her to her bedroom. I’m calling Carlisle and Esme.” He rushed from Tamia’s side out of the house with his phone to his ear and then a few seconds later, his phone was back to his ear.
Emmett had placed the covers on her when Jasper entered the room. “Is Carlisle coming?”
“Yes, he’s leaving the hospital as soon as possible. Esme is coming here soon with Alice and Rosalie.” Jasper said, as he walked over to the bed. He could feel her pain coming from her. He sat down on the bed and placed his hand on her forehead since it seemed to be the best idea for the time being.
Emmett headed out of the house as he heard Edward’s car’s tires squealing as he made the turn into the drive to Tamia’s home very sharp. Emmett shook his head as he saw how fast Edward was driving down her road, rocks flying as he pulled to a stop. “Looks like someone’s in love.”
“Shut it, Emmett.” Edward growled, as he stalked past him. “Where is she? Her room?”
“Yes, Jasper’s up there. We’re waiting for Carlisle to come.” Emmett replied, following behind him.
It was only half an hour later, when Carlisle’s car pulled up and he came hurrying towards the house. Emmett was by his side telling him everything that Jasper and he knew.
After Carlisle examined her, he looked at her and his children. “Tamia, you have a migraine. When did you take one of the tablets?”
“Last night . . . midnight an hour before you came to visit.” Tamia whispered.
Carlisle shook his head. “Why didn’t you tell me that you did last night?”
Tamia whispered softly. “I never want to be a burden to anyone.”
“You are not a burden to anyone, Tamia.” Carlisle whispered back in his soft gentle voice.
“Who ever says that about you is an idiot.” Edward replied.
“More like insane,” Tamia whispered.
“Now, Tamia, the shot I’m going to give you is a pain killer.” Carlisle whispered softly.
“There are bags under my bed to assist in keeping me in place, Carlisle.” Tamia replied.
Edward knelt down and pulled out several long pillows that felt heavy to him. “What is within these?”
“Sand. I made them so I wouldn’t need people to stay by my side and watch over me.” Tamia whispered.
Carlisle was about to say something when Edward spoke. “You will have someone watching over you in case something goes wrong during the night.”
Tamia knew if she tried to refuse, they’ll argue the point, so she shrugged. “Okay.”
Carlisle pulled out his case that held the hypodermic with the painkiller ready to go. “This will knock you out for at least 18 to 24 hours.”
“Yes, I know. I had it before.” Tamia whispered, as she felt the slight prick of the needle going into her arm and the tingling sensation of the painkiller entering her blood system. She looked over at Dr. Carlisle and Edward as her eyes slowly closed on her and she drifted off into a drug-induced slumber.
~~~~~~~~~
Everyone was pacing within the living room waiting for Tamia to awaken when Edward hurried out of the room towards Tamia’s room. About two minutes later, he poked his head into the living room. “She’s awake.” And then, he disappeared.
Carlisle knocked on the door before he entered the bedroom to see Tamia sitting up in bed drinking some water with the help from Edward. “How do you feel?”
“A little better but the migraine is now a dull thud.” Tamia replied, looking over at him.
“That’s strange, the painkiller should have taken care of it.” Carlisle said.
“Well, I do have a bit of a tolerance to some painkillers.” Tamia stated the name of the painkiller that she normally is given when in a migraine.
Carlisle shook his head. “I didn’t give you that painkiller. I gave you Acetaminophin.”
Tamia shook her head. “You really needed to give me Stadol as that would knock the pain totally out within 24 hours.”
“It is a very powerful narcotic, Tamia. You could get addicted to it.” Carlisle said.
“Well, considering that my doctor used it on me for the past three years, my body would have shown some desire for it but it doesn’t.” Tamia replied.
“That is curious.” Carlisle said. “How many times do you get migraines that are this powerful to require it?”
“Maybe about five times a month to about once every four months. I could go for months without it and then BAM! I have one.” Tamia replied, as she walked over and sat down in the chair.
“What causes them?” Carlisle asked, as he jotted everything down.
“Could be simple as walking outside on a sunny day and staying in the sun for about an hour’s time to pull a 24 hour duty without sleep. Most of the time it comes and goes. I never really know when I could get them and I try my best to keep them from getting this way. I take a low level aspirin each day just to keep it from coming.” Tamia replied.
“Does it work?” asked Edward.
“Most of the time it does and sometimes I need the tablets.” Tamia stated.
The phone rang. Tamia started to get up but Carlisle shook his head as Edward reached over to the phone and answered it. “Sanders residence, Edward Cullen speaking. Yes, just one moment.” He covered the receiver. “Tamia, its your father.”
“I better take it, Edward.” Tamia said, as she accepted the phone from him. “Hi dad. That’s my neighbor’s son, he and his family are over here. I’m okay, I had a migraine last night, slept it mostly off. Yes, I’ll be going back to bed soon. I have a new doctor. I couldn’t wait about five to six hours for him to arrive here. I got a new one here. He’s here and he’ll be giving me another painkiller. Okay, have it sent to you then. Dad, I do have the money to cover my own doctor’s bills. Oh alright, I’ll send the bill you by USPS overnight but it might not get there in one day, I do live in a small town now. Okay, love you too. Bye.” She hung up the phone and sighed. She looked over at them. “My dad wants the bill for the house visit, Carlisle.”
“Well, all is needed is payment for the shot I gave you, nothing else is required.” Carlisle replied, as he pulled out a bill from his coat pocket.
She took a glance at it and walked out of the room where she had her checkbook at brought it over and signed it to the hospital and handed it to him. “This will force my dad to come visit me much sooner than planned, but I don’t care as long as he doesn’t bring him with him.”
“Him who?” asked Emmett.
“My older brother.” Tamia said.
“He’s the one in this photo?” Emmett asked, pointing to a dark haired, graying young man.
“Yes, he and I can get into the worst fights possible all him screaming at me for what I have and that he doesn’t have.” Tamia replied.
“And what would that be?” asked Rosalie.
“Money,” Tamia stated calmly, though there was a tightening of the jaws that they all noticed. “He wants the kind of money that I have but he is just too lazy to actively go after it.”
“He’s that kind of kid?” Carlisle asked.
Tamia looked at him. “Pardon?”
“The kind of kid that expects everything to be handed to him type kid?” Carlisle restated his question.
“In a way, yes. He thinks that the money will start flowing into his currency account but when it comes to pulling the money out, Gregory refuses to do that.”
“That’s stupid! The currency market is the scariest of all of the markets out there. One minute you are up with your currency and the next you lost it all.” Jasper replied. “And I should know, I lost half a million dollars on the currency market in two minutes.”
“Wow, Gregory lost a quarter of a million just because he didn’t wake up to the ringing of his phone. He blamed the loss on the currency agent who was handling his trading. Dad was a former stockbroker and he warned Gregory to leave five thousand dollars in and put the rest in the bank for safekeeping. But Gregory wanted instant million and he opted to leave all of it in the market and look what happened – he lost it all. Now the funny part is that the IRS is now going after him for the money he earned when he got that money in the market and Gregory doesn’t want to cough up the money as he has none to speak of.” Tamia replied, looking at Jasper.
Jasper shook his head. “Even I’m not that stupid to risk all that. Gregory must be insane to think he’s not to blame.”
“Oh, he put blame on anyone if it is not to say he was at fault for something.” Tamia replied.
The Cullens all shook their heads. Rosalie spoke, “What a jerk. He should owe up to his mistakes and admit that he did wrong and apologize for his misplacement of the blame.”
“He won’t, Gregory is not like that. He’ll blame God for everything that goes wrong in his life from not getting a woman to not having enough money to get a woman. He thinks he is going to get what I am going to get but he’s wrong, he has no mindset for it at all and none of the talents.” Tamia replied.
“Talents?” asked Emmett.
“Yes, he’s not calm or collected enough to handle what I’m going to get when I turn forty, Emmett.” Tamia stated.
Emmett looked at her. "So what do you get when you turn forty, Tamia?"
"My inheritance," Tamia replied.
"Inheritance from who?" asked Edward.
"From my grandfather, he had stipulations on who should get it as a test, he gave everyone a million dollars to do with as they want. But the thing is if by the time the first one gets to forty years old and still has the million dollars and made it grow, that child will get the inheritance from him." Tamia said.
"When did he die?" asked Carlisle.
"In 1990, we were 22, 20 and 18 years of age. Both my brothers wasted their money but for me I kept it in the bank and never really touched it. I had it in a separate account from my other money and right now, it's about 4.5 million dollars. Quite good for a 20 year old woman who could have spend it like water." Tamia stated.
“I’d say,” Jasper said. “Having a million dollars and being able to spend it on anything and you saved it, instead of spending it.”
“Yeah, my dad, he knew how good I was about saving my money. He taught me never waste your money on needless things. If you spend it all, you will not have anything left when you really need the money.” Tamia replied.
“So what’s the inheritance, if you know what it is?” Edward asked.
“I’m not even sure what it is, truthfully, Edward. It could be more money or something else. I just do not know.” Tamia said as she looked at him.
Alice looked at her and walked out of the room with Jasper behind her. “Alice, what’s wrong?”
Alice shook her head till she climbed into her car and turned it on the radio just enough to hide her voice from everyone. Jasper looked at her shocked and then to the house. He asked something of her, Alice just shook her head.
Tamia looked at the car and glanced over at Carlisle and Esme. “They’re talking about me, aren’t they?”
“They usually do step out and talk privately about their plans. It might be that they’re trying to include you in on some of them.” Esme stated. “My daughter seems to like you a lot.”
“I like her too, Esme.” Tamia replied. “As an older sister. Heck, I don’t even have sisters by blood, only brothers and one that I wish was alive.”
“Your little brother David, correct?” asked Emmett.
“Yes, I loved him even with his drug addicted mind, he was still looking out for me. He loved us all and the last words to the police officer were ‘Tell my family I love them and I’m sorry.’, when I heard that . . . I knew that my little brother knew he was about to die. He made sure that we knew how much he loved us to the very end.” Tamia said, as she wiped her eyes with the back of her hand.
Edward handed her a tissue as he looked at her. “How did he die?”
“Punctured right lung and a lacerated liver. The paramedics and the doctors didn’t know that he was bleeding internally till the autopsy which revealed what caused his death.” Tamia replied.
“If they knew?” asked Rosalie.
“Probably wouldn’t have helped as his liver had an inch laceration on it and even if they were able to cauterize it to stop the bleeding, it was just one part of what killed him.” Tamia replied. Her voice showing the welling grief that she still carried inside of her concerning her little brother.
“Does your family know that you still grieve over his loss?” asked Jasper as he entered the room.
“Not really. We did spend some time with a psychiatrist but not for too long. We tend to cope on our own more than talking to someone else about it.” Tamia replied.
“But you are suffering silently.” Jasper said.
“I’ve handled it that way for the past ten years, Jasper, I can handle it still.” Tamia walked out of the living room and up the stairs towards her bedroom.
A few minutes later, Alice rushed up the stairs poked her head into the room and came down. “She’s taking a shower. I think she might be trying to get ready for work.”
Jasper shook his head. “No, it is to hide the tears that is falling from her eyes. Her heart still weighs heavy over the loss of her brother.”
Rosalie rose from her seat and started to head towards the stairs. Jasper went in front of her shaking his head. “Let her be, Rosalie.”
“Why, she needs a shoulder to cry on, Jasper.” Rosalie replied.
“She’s not the one who wants to burden anyone with her grief.” Carlisle answered.
“I want to be there for her . . . she is our friend is she not?” asked Rosalie.
“We haven’t even got to the point where we told her what ‘we’ are, Rosalie.” Emmett said. “What if she runs from us . . . in total fear of what we are and she runs into by accident the nomads, then what?”
“Then, we will drop hints to what we are to her and if she guesses them, we’ll let her know.” Carlisle stated.
“But dad, she’s with the police . . . if she becomes aware of what we are and spreads it about to the police and the folks in Forks.” Edward replied.
“Marcus would never permit the townspeople to live,” Alice said. “And if the townspeople believes Tamia . . . we’d be . . .”
“Hunted down like criminals and shoved into the sunlight to ‘burn’ to see if she’s telling the truth. The Volturi would never permit this, they would send their hunters the moment we tell Tamia what we are and the hunters will slaughter everyone in town and kill us for revealing what we are.” Edward replied.
“I know, Edward.” Carlisle said, glancing over at him before putting his gaze at the rest of his family. “We will drop hints of who we are to Tamia and if she guesses what we are . . . we shall tell her after getting her to promise not to reveal.”
“Reveal what?” a voice spoke coming from the doorway. Carlisle and his family turned swiftly around to see Tamia standing there. “Reveal what to me?”
“That we want to bring you into our clan as an official member, Tamia.” Rosalie informed her.
“We wish to adopt you into our family, if you are okay with it?” Esme spoke up, smiling towards her.
“Aren’t I sort of old for adopting into your family, Esme?”
“Well, considering we adopted Emmett into our family when he was 17 years of age. A forty year old won’t be too hard, just need a last name change that’s all.” Carlisle replied. “That is . . . if you are interested in being a member of the family.”
“That is kind of you but I have my own family, Carlisle, even as weird as my family is, it is my family.” Tamia said politely.
“Very well.” Carlisle replied. “How do you feel?”
“It’s a dull thud still, the headache probably will be gone in another few hours.” Tamia said.
“I could always give you another shot?” Carlisle asked.
“No, it is better if I just sleep it the rest off as it shouldn’t be that hard for me now.” Tamia replied. “But thanks for the offer.”
Edward spoke up. “The drug, that my dad used if used for lesser things than tending to that size of a headache that you have now would just make you become addicted to it.”
“If you have an addictive personality, Edward, which I don’t.” Tamia stated calmly. “But I’ve been using that shot for years with my migraine headaches and I don’t crave it.”
Esme looked at her and smiled. “Well, we will take our leave and let you finish off your headache. Come on, children.” Esme looked at her kids nudging them towards the door.
“See you later, Tamia.” Alice said, as she walked away with Jasper by her side.
Soon, the house was silent but for Tamia’s footsteps on the stairs as she headed back for her bed. She knew that Emmett and Jasper had replaced her front door with a glass plane door, which Jasper had broke to get to her side.
~~~~~~~~~~
Several days later, Tamia was back to work tending to the calls and being visited by Jacob still making his attempt at making her sell her place and live in a different place, to her amusement. She had found it funny that he kept trying even though she kept telling him that she wouldn’t move. She made light of it with her friends online. They thought she should just report him for harassment.
Night Owl: “No, it would make a scene in town and I just ignore his comments as my neighbors are really good people.”
Chicago Gentleman: “So what did he say this time?”
Night Owl: “The same old thing, they’re trouble for anyone who lives next to them. I don’t see why as all the times that I needed someone . . . they were always right there.”
Tennessee man: “I’m glad that they were there for you.”
Night Owl: “Yeah, this time the two boys Emmett and Jasper came to the house and found me in the midst of a migraine.”
FL Horsewoman: “Sis, did you take a pill?”
Night Owl: “It was already too late for one, sis.”
FL Horsewoman: “So what did they do? Get you into their car and drive you to the hospital?”
Night Owl: “No, they put me in bed and called their dad.”
FL Horsewoman: “That is good.”
They chatted on about their day till FL Horsewoman had to go off to bed and soon after that, Night Owl also logged off for the night.
Tamia closed down her computer and headed off to bed planning tomorrow would be the day she would go hunting on Adonis around the field she found a few days back.
Stay tuned, the next one is coming.
