Chapter 8: Knowing Me, Knowing You
BPOV
Something irritating was tickling the back my thigh. A fly perhaps? I tried to ignore it and remain asleep but it was persistent. I moved my leg gently, hoping whatever it was would get the hint and fly off somewhere.
Nope, there it is again. Argh! It had gotten more annoying as now it seemed to be on my cheek. My hand was under the pillow underneath me, so I gently moved it out and tried to brush the damn thing away again. As I did my hand made contact with someone’s skin and I heard a low chuckle.
I opened one eye to see Edward resting on one arm on his side, looking at me, gently laughing to himself. Damn him.
Hmm, I thought appreciatively, he looks damn good in the morning. His hair was all ruffled and he had some stubble that had grown through. The sheet was resting loosely across his hips. I had a perfect view of that tempting path of hair that led downwards from his belly button. He crooked smile nearly caused me to melt.
“Do you think a fly squatter exists that is big enough to squat you?!” I mumbled, one eye still staying shut.
Edward laughed harder. “You’re so cute when you’re asleep. You mumble and make funny facial expressions.” It’s so endearing.
Great. So he’d probably seen me dribble too. My dad always said that I poked my tongue out when I slept. Fantastic!
“Thanks” I mumbled, embarrassed, turning my head and re-positioning myself so I was lying on my belly, facing the other direction.
“Awww don’t be offended” He snuggled up to my back, one arm pulling me closer into him. He nuzzled my neck, trailing light kisses across my naked shoulder.
“You looked so cute and defenceless; I couldn’t help but watch you.”
“Exactly how long were you watching me, Edward?” Oh God. Please say not long.
“Long enough” He chuckled. My heart sank. “I could have gone for longer though”
“Then you shouldn’t have woken me up” I protested, trying to snuggle back into the pillow. “What time is it anyway?”
Edward moved to glance at the clock on the side table. “Nearly ten. What do you want to do today?” He nuzzled back into my hair.
“Can’t we sleep for a bit longer? I’m kind of tired.”
“What? And waste one of the very few Bank Holiday’s that we have? And it looks like it’s going to be such a nice day!”
I opened one eye. I was facing yet another wall that was made entirely of glass.
That’s strange I didn’t notice that last night. I glanced up to see that a full length blind had been opened. Edward must have done that earlier. The view was the same as the one from the balcony. I sighed, taking it in.
I would never get tired of that view. I could sit for hours and just watch the world go by. I opened my other eye and lifted my head slightly, resting it on my arm. Edward was right; it did look like it was going to be a good day.
Edward lifted himself and leaned down over me, kissing my cheek.
“What would you like for breakfast?” He let his lips linger over my cheek, his breath tickling me.
I turned my face upwards to him, meeting his lips for a brief instant. I pulled away quickly, I hadn’t yet brushed me teeth.
“As long as it includes coffee, I don’t mind. Surprise me?”
Edward grinned that devastating crooked grin and jumped up and off the bed and out of the bedroom. I watched his butt move through his boxers as he left. Mmmm.. there was another view I was beginning to love.
I smiled to myself. This was nice; I liked that having that new butterflies type feeling that came with a new relationship. So far, Edward seemed like the perfect guy. Physical perfection, masses of chemistry and attraction, plenty to talk about, great house and a good job. And he obviously wanted me. I remembered our conversation from earlier, and a grin spread across my face. I was his girlfriend. How I loved thinking that. I really was bursting with happiness at the moment. I sighed again, allowing my eyes to drift back to the view.
With that Edward came through the bedroom door carrying a tray. He winked at me and placed the tray down onto the bed, sitting himself next to me. I sat up, the smell of coffee hitting me, making my mouth water.
“I brought you a few different things, as I don’t know yet what you like or don’t like” He kissed me on the cheek.
I liked the way he said yet. It implied that he wanted to know everything about me. That, given time, he would know everything about me. I smiled on the inside.
“Well…. I like coffee in the morning” I started. “Milk, no sugar, and strong”
He smirked at me, playing along. “Okay, that’s a start. What else?”
I grabbed a banana off the tray. “Fruit is good also” I winked at him whilst he poured me out a coffee. When he finished he handed the mug of dark steaming liquid to me.
“What about you?” I asked, sipping the coffee…mmm it tasted good.
“Coffee for me too, no sugar either, although I prefer mine black”
A broad smile spread across my face. I know that these were silly, minor details, but I liked that we were learning things about each other.
My eyes scanned the tray. There were a couple of yoghurts. I glanced over the flavours, looking for the one I wanted.
I spotted it and grabbed it. “I love cherries” I smiled at him.
He drew in a long breath. “Well, there we might have a problem.” He looked sullen. “I love cherry yoghurts too. It looks like I’m going to have to fight you for them from now on.”
Inside I was jumping up and down like an excitable child. ‘From now on’ implied I might be having breakfast at his often. The thought thrilled me.
“From now on?” I raised an eyebrow at him, giving him a questioning look.
I swear I saw a flash of embarrassment flicker across his face, before it was gone again, regaining his composure.
A smile spread across his face. “Unless I’m mistaken, you’re kind of homeless at the moment. I simply meant that you might chose to have breakfast here often, that’s all.”
I decided to push him further. I wanted to.
“Do you want me to have breakfast here often?”
He paused and looked serious for a moment. “As often as you’d like to, yes.”
I leant over to him and briefly but firmly kissed him. “Looks like you’d better buy some more cherry yoghurts then.” I smiled.
He leant down and kissed me again, more passionately this time. “I’ll buy all the cherry yoghurts the shop has, if that’s what it takes.”
He dropped his head to me again, for another passionate kiss. My hands pulling him closer to me, his hands in my hair, clutching handfuls.
Needing to take a breath, I pulled away first. I held his face in my hands. “I’d stay here without the lure of cherry yoghurts, you know”
“I’d hope so!” He replied, chuckling. He shifted in the bed. The next thing I knew I was being picked up bride-over-the-threshold style.
“Edward!” I squealed. My arms flung themselves around his neck, clinging to him.
He brought his lips to mine, his tongue causing me to forget everything else. I loved being so close to him; the feel of his hard muscles underneath me brought a familiar warm pooling sensation between my legs.
“I thought you might want a shower?! You could tell me how you like it?!” he laughed. He was happy and having fun. It was so nice to see. He was happy with me. My heart swelled again. I was happy with him.
“On one condition” I said
“Name it. Name any condition and I’d meet it.” He nuzzled my neck.
“You have to shower with me” My voice thick with lust.
“Bella, that was already a given” he smiled. “Did you think I was going to leave you in there on your own? What if there was a big spider in there that you needed protecting from?!” he joked.
I wasn’t that bothered by spiders.
“You know…I think I’ve just remembered something else that you might want to know about me.”
“What?”
“I’m petrified of spiders. Scared stiff”.
Edward and I both started to laugh as he brought his lips to mine, walking through the bathroom door.
*****
In the end we decided on going to the Zoo. It wasn’t too far away and we both wanted to be outside seeing as it was such a sunny day. We were also unlikely to bump into anyone who knew me, considering I yet had to break up with Jacob.
The idea of us going outside as a couple thrilled me. To be able to hold hands and kiss in public was sending bolts of happiness through me. I really was in a little excitable bubble at the moment. I kept getting wide grins spreading across my face, then, realising that Edward was staring at me; I’d blush and look at my feet. He would laugh and kiss my forehead, his low rumbling laugh vibrating through him.
I was so happy.
I was also the most sexually satisfied that I had ever been. Edward could push buttons that I didn’t even know I had. My previous sex life hadn’t been fantastic, I’d lost my virginity to my first boyfriend when I was 17, and Jacob was the only other person I’d slept with. I should really call him later today. I’d already called Angela just to let her know what was going on and that I hadn’t been abducted by aliens, she’d squealed with excitement when I told her about Edward, I could tell she was desperate to get me back to hers so she could get all the gory details.
Edward and I had continued to play the getting to know you game for most of what was left of the morning. It was fun. I loved finding out things about him. Like the fact that he didn’t like prawns or coconut; or that he wouldn’t step on three drains in a row on the pavement out of fear of getting bad luck. I learnt that his middle name was Anthony, his parents were call Esme and Carlisle and he had a brother called Emmett and a sister called Alice. Alice was in Fashion and Emmett was an Engineer. Edward was the oldest. He has wanted to be a soldier when he was younger, but his dad was a doctor, so he decided to follow in his footsteps.
Our conversations were endless. I had told him about my family; my dad Charlie and mum Renee were separated, I lived with my dad when I went home. I told him about how Jacob and I got together, firstly being close friends, and then going that one step further. I told him about how I had felt about Jacob the past month or so, and that I felt the spark had died out. Edward told me about his last relationship, with a friend of his sisters called Tanya. They had been together for about two years before she had cheated on him with her ex-boyfriend. It had hurt Edward a lot, his facial expression exuded pain. It made me want to reach out and touch him, to pull him into my arms and comfort him.
We were also beginning to learn about each other’s bodies. His neck was very sensitive to being lightly kissed, and he loved it when I roughly grabbed handfuls of his hair. He also found out that my back is incredibly ticklish if he gently brushed along my spine with his fingertips, sending involuntary shudders through me.
I was in heaven; I never wanted today to end. My mind drifted to being at work with him. How would we act around each other? Should we tell people? I didn’t like the idea of everyone gossiping about us. I also had to deal with Jacob first. I didn’t want it getting back to him that Edward and I had become involved before we had split up, it wasn’t fair to him.
I voiced my opinions to Edward whilst we were getting ready to head to the zoo.
“I’m not sure if I want people at work to know about us” I said quietly.
He stopped what he was doing and turned to me.
“How come?”
“I just can’t face the gossiping. Plus Jessica is going to hate me. And then there’s the issue of Jacob” I added grimly.
“Hmmm, yeah, I’d forgotten about him. Well it’s up to you. I don’t mind. I won’t be able to keep it secret for long though, no doubt people will notice that something’s going on. And I’m going to find it hard keeping my hands to myself.” He winked and that gorgeous crocked grin spread over his face. Wow, he was so hot.
“Yeah, I guess it will be strange trying to act normal around you. Kind of fun though too, don’t you think?! We should see how long it takes people to guess”
“Hmmmm….” Edward mused. “I’m not sure I like that idea. I want people to know that I’m with the most beautiful girl there, not hide it. Forever keeping it secret doesn’t really fit in with my plans.”
My heart leapt inside my chest. Edward thought I was beautiful. Not pretty, beautiful. A happy-smug-dreamy grim spread over my face. Seriously, when was I going to wake up from this amazing dream I was having?! Not anytime soon I hoped.
“Okay then. We’ll keep it quiet just for a little while until I can break up with Jacob and let the dust settle.”
“Fine by me. Are you ready to head out?” He peered over at me. It was a gorgeous day and I only had the clothes that I was wearing yesterday with me. Luckily I’d worn a long tunic style top over my jeans that I could double up as a dress. A short dress, but it was either that or melt in my pair of jeans in the heat.
As I stood up, I felt Edwards eyes roam over my legs.
“Nice” He whispered throatily, stepping towards me, reaching out.
“Later” I gently chided him, grabbing his arm and dragging him out of the door.

The zoo had been a good choice. As expected, being a sunny national holiday, it was packed. Lots of people meant we could go unnoticed, blending in. Edward laughed at me getting all broody over the baby polar bears, and then I laughed at him for giving the snake section a wide berth. Something that didn’t have any legs ‘just wasn’t right’ apparently.
We were both incredibly tactile with each other, wondering around stealing glances, kisses and touches. We held hands in the information zones, reading about each animal, not talking to each other, but the union of our hands spoke volumes. We both seemed completely at ease with each other, like we fit perfectly together, like two jigsaw pieces, slotting together.
My belly started to rumble so Edward grabbed us both some sandwiches and drinks, and we sat on a picnic table by a lake filled with pink flamingos. We sat straddling the bench, with my back pressed against his front. We ate in silence, not feeling the need to fill it with pointless chatter. When we were done eating I rested back against him and soaked up the sun, allowing my eyes to shut. Edward dropped his head, his chin resting on my shoulder, his lips placing frequent chaste kisses on my head.
I was very peaceful laid like this until the buzzing of my phone brought me back to the present. I rummaged around in my bag and found my phone, flipping it open. A text from Jacob. My brows furrowed, reading it.
“Hey Bells, U ok? I’m sat at home missing you. When can we talk? Please come home. I love you. J x”
“Bella are you okay?” Edward asked me, a concerned look on his face.
“Um..Yeah. It’s from Jacob. He wants me to come home.”
“Oh.” Edward looked disappointed.
“I guess I should go home and talk to him tonight. Put him out of his misery.” I felt like I had to put a dog down. I knew it wasn’t going to be pretty. I was unsure of how he was going to react, but I knew it wouldn’t be good.
“When are you going to do it? Do you need me to come with you?” Edward suggested.
“No…No I don’t think that would be a good idea, but thanks” I rushed out. That would be the worst thing to do I thought. “I’ll do it tonight.”
“Okay.” Edward said. He looked sad.
“What’s the matter?” I asked.
“Nothing really, I was just being selfish. I was looking forward to having you to myself tonight. Having you all day.”
Poor Edward, he looked devastated.
I turned to him and put both of my hands on either side of his face.
“I know, I was too. But I have to go and do this. It’s not fair to him. Besides, you’ll get to have me as much as you want soon.”
He raised an eyebrow and looked hopeful. “As much as I want? Really?”
“Yes. Really” I pecked him on the lips briefly.
“You’ll be round mine a lot then. I don’t think I’ll ever get sick of you.”
“Oh…just you wait” I smiled. Edward laughed.
I text Jacob back and said that I would be round later tonight. There was no point in putting it off. I didn’t end the message with any kisses, nor did I tell him that I loved or missed him. I was subconsciously hoping that it would send him a warning, so that the blow I was about to deliver didn’t come too hard. Flipping my phone shut, I tried to push Jacob out of my mind. I would deal with that later, right now, I wanted some Edward and Bella zoo time.
******
I headed back home to talk to Jacob around 5pm. Edward dropped me off at Angela’s house so I could pick up my car and drive myself, I really didn’t want Jacob to see Edward dropping me off.
I parked up outside and headed up to the front door, ringing the bell. It didn’t seem right using my key, it wasn’t really my home anymore. I waited for Jacob to come to the door. I didn’t have to wait long, I saw him rush to the door through the frosted glass.
“Bells!” Jacob seemed jubilant. He grabbed me in a bone-crushing embrace, planting a kiss on my cheek.
“I’ve missed you so much. Let’s sort this out so you can come back home.” He put me down and stepped aside, so I could enter.
“Hey Jake, how have you been?” I tried to force a slight smile and stepped inside, walking into the kitchen.
“Do you want some coffee Bells? I’ve just put a pot on. I made that stuff you like that we got in Guatemala last summer.”
“No Jake, it’s fine, I’m okay.” I sat down, hoping he would follow suit.
The smile fell from his face. He planted himself down opposite me. He searched my face.
I grabbed one of his hands, and forced myself to look into his face. I had to do this. Be quick and strong Bella. Just like taking a plaster off. Say what you need to say and get out.
“Jake, I need to chat to you. About us.” I began, giving pauses in between everything that I was saying. I was secretly hoping that he would pre-empt what I was about to say so that I didn’t have to say it. God I was such a coward.
“Bells, what’s wrong? You look so sad. Just come home and everything will be okay. I’ll make it okay.”
Oh god. He was going to make this so much harder for me. I took a deep breath and swallowed.
“Jake….I’m not coming home. You and me, it’s not what I want anymore.”
He straightened up and his brows furrowed, a confused look crossing his face. It was so painful.
“What? What do you mean you’re not coming home? Why not?!”
“Because things haven’t felt right for a while Jake. I love you, I really do, but I think I love you as more of a friend. I don’t feel that spark anymore. I’m sorry.” I squeezed his hand gently.
“You love me as a friend?! As a friend?!” He spat, looking angry now. “This has come on a bit suddenly, it’s since you’ve started working. Maybe you’re still stressed and need some time to adjust’
I maintained eye contact, stopping myself from looking away from him.
“No Jake, I don’t think that’s it. My feelings won’t change. I do love you, but not in the way you want me to. I thought my love for you was something more, but I can see now that it’s not. I am sorry but I’m going to move out.”
He suddenly stood up from the table, pushing the chair back with a sharp scrape on the floor, it made a screeching sound against the slate tiles making me cringe. He brought one hand up to his head and started pacing.
“You don’t think you’ve ever loved me like the way I love you?” He shouted.
He was getting really angry now, the veins on his neck stood out and his eyes had started to glisten.
“Bella, you can’t leave me. We’ll give it another go. Make it work. You’ll see that you really do love me. I’ll show you.” He looked desperate. His face pulled at my heartstrings, he looked like a little puppy that was being rejected at the pet shop. I was so mean.
You have to be cruel to be kind, Bella, I reminded myself. Just be thankful he doesn’t know about Edward.
“I’m sorry Jake. I can’t. I’m going to go and grab some of my things from upstairs.” I moved to get up. Jake just stood there, dumbfounded.
I walked upstairs and quickly threw most of my remaining clothes and a few work books into some bags. I could get the rest at a later date; I would let the dust settle first.
When I got to the bottom of the stairs Jacob was there waiting for me. I looked past him and opened the front door. Jacob suddenly grabbed my wrist, preventing me from walking out.
“Please, Bella. Don’t go. Don’t throw us away” He pleaded with me.
“I’m sorry Jake, My hearts not in this anymore. I’d like it if we could still be friends though?” I looked hopeful.
I tried to pull my wrist away but it was fast in his grip. “Jake, let go. I need to go.”
Jake suddenly pulled me towards him. I dropped my bags in shock. He wrapped his arms around my waist, pulling me to him.
“Please Bella.” He sounded surer of himself now.
“Jake, don’t.” I tried to sound firm.
The next thing I knew he had forced his lips down onto mine. With my hands on his biceps I tried to push him away from me, but he was too strong. One of his hands grasped the back of my head, pushing me harder onto his lips, which were moving with force against my clammed shut mouth. I tried to shout through the kiss, but Jacob just squeezed me harder. My fists began pounding on his arms, trying to make him release me, but I might as well have been hitting a one hundred year old oak tree. He was immovable.
“Get off her!” I heard someone shout, footsteps bounding up the pathway to the house. I froze. Edward. Why was he here?
Jake pulled his head up from mine, but still held me to him. He looked to where the voice had come from.
“Who the hell are you?!” He demanded.
“A friend of Bella’s” He looked over at me, concern written all over his face. “Let go of her, she doesn’t want you to do that”
Jacob dropped me and squared up to Edward.
“Yeah? And how the hell would you know?! This was a private conversation mate, now piss off!” he spat at Edward.
Edward glanced at me, trying his best to ignore Jacob. “You okay Bella? You ready to go?” He reached out a hand towards me.
I picked up my bags, eyes darting between the two of them.
Jacob turned to me. “Bella, who is this guy?!”
“A friend” I repeated, using Edward’s words.
Jake looked between the two of us. Something suddenly clicked, like a light switching on. “A Friend??! What kind of friend?!” he shouted. “You’re leaving me for him aren’t you?!?!”
Oh god. I was hoping it wouldn’t come to this.
Jacob turned around to face Edward again. Sensing an impending argument, I quickly positioned myself in between them, by back against Edward’s front. I stepped back, pushing Edward closer to the door.
“Jake listen to me. He hasn’t done anything wrong. You want to me mad at someone, you be mad at me!” I pleaded with him.
Jacob wasn’t paying any attention to me; his eyes were locked onto Edward’s. He was taller and more muscled than him, but I got the feeling that Edward kept himself in better shape.
“Bella is mine.” Jake spat over my head at Edward. “She might think she’s yours right now, but you won’t be able to get rid of me that easily. I know her better than anyone else; she’ll always come back to me.”
I pushed Edward out of the front door. He didn’t say anything, but kept his eyes on Jacob’s. I pinched him on the arm, trying to bring his attention back to me. His muscles were all tense, his fists clenched.
“Just leave him. Let’s go” I hissed.
“Oh I’m leaving him alright. This fight is over, no matter what this chump says.” Edward hissed back, loud enough for Jacob to hear. Jacob growled and looked daggers at us both before he slammed the door shut, disappearing behind it in a frosted haze.
