See? I told you I'd have another chapter.
“Hello. My name is Carlisle Cullen, and I seem to be your doctor.” The tall blonde doctor was looking over my chart.
“Any relation to Edward?” I asked. He seemed surprised.
“Why, yes, actually. He’s my son. I assume you’ve met him at school?”
I nodded.
“Well…” he looked down at my chart. “Well, Whitaker, we have your x-ray. It turns out your ribs are only badly bruised, so you may be in pain for a few days.” I breathed a sigh of relief.
“At least they’re not broken,” I muttered.
“Yes, there’s that, but I cant say the same for your nose. It is broken, but it’s a clean break, not shattered.”
“But you can fix it, right?”
“Yes, but I want to know something first.” I nodded for him to continue. “What happened?” I sighed.
“I got in a fight.” He looked at me curiously.
“You don’t seem one to fight. What started this fight?”
“Some football player attacked me in the bathroom…”
“Why?” he asked.
I groaned. “If I tell you, you’ll just run like everybody else.” He placed a hand on my shoulder.
“I think I can handle it.”
I looked away and steeled myself. “He found out that… He found out my…orientation. He hit me in the bathroom, saying he wouldn’t stand a faggot in his school.” I dared a glance at Dr. Cullen’s face. He was staring at me in shock and anger. “I’m sorry. I understand if you want to ask one of the other doctors to fix me up.” His eyes refocused on my face.
“No! I have no problem with you as a patient. What I have a problem with is people with such strong prejudices.” He sighed. “I’m sorry you had to go through that. Let’s see what we can do about that nose, huh?”
I was sent home with a mild pain medication that Dr. Cullen prescribed. I was bandaged and excused from school for a few days.
When the nurse dropped me off at home, my grandfather was waiting on me. She had called him. He didn’t say anything when I walked up the steps. He just hugged me gently and told me to go lie down. I did so gratefully.
I slept until late that afternoon. I heard a knock on the front door of the house.
“Hello,” I heard my grandfather greet the visitor. “Can I help you?”
“Yes. I was wondering if Whitaker was all right?” a quiet voice asked. Jasper! I internally screamed, sitting up quickly and wincing at the sudden stab of pain.
“The doctor took good care of him. He’s resting.”
“Oh.”
“I can see if he’s up if you would like to visit,” Gramps said gently.
“Please, sir,” Jasper pleaded.
“Just sit there on the couch and I’ll go get him.”
A few moments later, there was a knock at my door.
“Whitaker, are you awake?”
“Yeah, Gramps,” I replied.
“There’s someone here to see you.”
“Tell him I’ll be out in a minute.” He only chuckled.
I gingerly made my way out to the living room. I’d had broken ribs before, and though bruised ones weren’t as bad, they still hurt like the devil.
Jasper was sitting on the edge of the couch, his anxiety palpable. His face visibly relaxed when he saw me, his dark golden eyes warming at the sight of me. Wait…weren’t his eyes lighter last week? He stood when I entered the room.
“How are you?” he immediately asked, concern lacing his every word.
“I’ve been better, but, then again, I’ve been worse,” I hedged. “My ribs are only bruised.” He didn’t smile, but his eyes danced at the fact that I wasn’t severely injured.
“Your grandfather stepped outside so we could talk.” He motioned for me to sit on the couch, then sat beside me.
“Gramps is cool like that.” I touched his hand. “He’s actually cool about a lot of things.”
“That’s good.”
“I met your adoptive father. He’s the one who took care of me. He’s the only one I’ve told all that happened. It surprised me that he was okay with me being gay. Actually, it surprises me that you, Edward, and Bella are okay with it, too.”
“We’ve never been prejudiced against anyone. I mean, there’s no way we could be…”
“What do you mean?”
He shook his head. “I’m going to get it when I get home,” he groaned.
“I hope not. I need you in one piece!” His mouth fell open, and I looked away, embarrassed. “Thank you for helping me today,” I tried to cover.
“It was no problem. He shouldn’t mess with you for a while.”
“What did you do?”
“Nothing… But Edward and I might have threatened him to keep his mouth shut.”
“Don’t get yourself into trouble.”
“The nurse told the principal, and they asked me who it was.”
“You didn’t tell them, did you?”
“Of course I told them! They were very understanding, actually. They’ll wait until you get back to school before deciding how to punish him.”
“Don’t do anything,” He stared at me incredulously; “because then people will wonder why he’s being punished. I think enough people know about me for now. I’m lucky they’ve all been so understanding.”
He closed his mouth and nodded. “I’m glad you’re all right,” he whispered. “I need to get home before they start worrying.” He stood and paused, thinking over something. Coming to a decision, he leaned down and pressed his lips to my forehead. My skin tingled from his icy touch. I looked up in surprise, but he had turned away. “Sorry,” he mumbled.
“Don’t be.” I hugged him. After a moment, he gently wrapped his arms around me. “Thanks for checking on me.” I pulled back. “Now skedaddle before you get in trouble.”
He smiled wanly and left with a gentle squeeze to my hand. He was always gentle with me, I noticed. Almost like he was afraid to break me.
In my opinion, that weasly football player should get the ol' one-two! But, I digress...
Let me know what you think. :)
