It was spring break, and Bella did spend most of her time at La Push. Unfortunately, Jacob didn’t spend much of that time with her. He was busy hunting with the pack. It seemed Victoria was getting frustrated and desperate.
Sam sat with Jacob one evening after Bella left. “Bella really means a lot to you, doesn’t she?”
Jacob nodded. “Yeah, she’s a good friend. I know you didn’t want her to know, but I’m really glad she does. She can handle it, and she won’t tell anyone.”
“I believe you. I just wish you hadn’t led her to believe I was the head of some gang. Charlie was staring at me all evening.”
Jacob blushed. “Sorry,” he mumbled. “In my defense, I didn’t know what was going on at the time. You were all just acting so weird.”
“Don’t worry about it. What I’m wondering is how serious you are about her.”
Jacob paused, not sure how to answer. “I don’t know. I mean, she’s become like my best friend. I care about her a lot. I used to think about her like that, even though she doesn’t seem interested in me as anything more than a friend.”
“Used to? Care to elaborate?”
“I don’t know. The only thing I can compare it to is putting together a puzzle.”
“A puzzle?” Sam raised an eyebrow. “You’re comparing a girl to a puzzle?”
“Yeah, well, it’s like…you know how you can get these two pieces that look like they fit together, but they don’t? You can pound them down and make them fit, but they don’t really belong. It’s like that with me and Bella. She’s a great girl, and we get along really well. We almost fit, but not quite.”
“Ah, so no chance of imprinting on her?”
“No. But I have been having weird dreams about a blond man.” He left out the part about the blond being a vampire in the second dream. That was something no one else needed to know about.
Sam gave him a knowing grin. “I bet that means your soulmate is near. I didn’t know you were gay.”
“I—” Jacob froze. It had never crossed his mind that the dreams could mean he was gay. The first one may have been a sex dream, but the second one wasn’t. “Only one was a sex dream, and I still think Bella is pretty.”
“Then maybe you’re bi. I wouldn’t worry about it. When you meet your soulmate, you’ll know. Come on, we need to go.” Jacob followed Sam out to meet the rest of the pack, but he couldn’t concentrate on the task at hand. All he could think about was Bella and the beautiful blond stranger from his dreams.
Bella was getting rather tired of being alone. She’d agreed to staying at La Push because she thought it would mean lots of time with Jacob, but he was off with the pack most of the time. She wasn’t angry with him; she knew he was doing it to protect her.
She didn’t get to see Liam much anymore either. Obviously he couldn’t go to La Push with her, so he spent his days at the house. Once in a while she borrowed Billy’s phone to call him, but she felt bad about tying up the line.
She tried to catch up on school work, but she could only stare at that stuff so long. She ended up spending a lot of her time on the beach waiting for Jacob, but even that was starting to get boring.
One evening Jacob apologized profusely for his absence and promised to do something with her the next day. He’d decided to finally take her cliff diving. They’d seen the others doing it once while they were riding their bikes, and Bella had seemed fascinated by it.
Bella was excited for the first time in a long time. Not only was she not going to be alone, but she was going to be doing something dangerous and would most likely get to hear Edward’s voice again. Liam had warned her against doing such things, but she couldn’t help it. It had been too long, and she needed to hear him again.
The next morning she took a change of clothes and headed to Jacob’s house earlier than usual. When she arrived, she was crushed to learn he had run off with the pack earlier that morning. Jared and Paul had found a fresh trail, meaning Victoria was nearby.
Bella went down to her usual spot at the beach, the emptiness threatening to consume her again. It didn’t take her long to decide that she was going to go cliff diving—with or without Jacob.
She ran back to her truck and headed up to the trail. Her whole body was shaking with excitement all the way there. She knew she shouldn’t jump from the top. Sam, Jared, Paul, and Embry did, but Jacob had explained that it was less dangerous for them. Not only were they stronger than the average person, but if they did get hurt they healed quickly.
Still, as she stood at the top with the wind blowing through her hair she was overcome with the urge to do just exactly what she shouldn’t. She reasoned that she didn’t know how to get down to the lower area, but she didn’t believe herself.
She stood there for several moments, gazing down at the dark, churning water. It didn’t look scary at all. In fact, she found herself looking forward to flying through the air.
Just as she’d predicted, Edward’s voice suddenly spoke to her, begging her not to do it, but that only spurred her on. She wanted him to keep talking. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, then leaped off the edge. The feeling was indescribable. She was flying. Edward’s voice was angry now.
Her body tensed as she hit the icy water, but it wasn’t as bad as she’d expected. What she didn’t expect was to get caught in the undercurrent. It grabbed her and shook her around like a rag doll until she didn’t know which way was up.
At first she struggled, desperately trying to find the surface. But as her lungs started to burn and her limbs weakened she decided she didn’t want to fight. This wasn’t so bad. Now she could see Edward as well as hear him, and he was pleading with her to keep fighting, but she ignored him.
Then out of nowhere something solid grabbed her and squeezed hard, making all the air in her lungs escape in a cloud of bubbles. A pair of cold lips sealed tightly against hers and fresh air was forced into her lungs. Her mind began to clear, but before she could make sense of anything she felt herself being dragged toward the shore.
“I’ve changed my mind: you are an idiot,” Liam declared as he lowered her down onto the sand and began to examine her. “And now I’m wet,” he complained. He thumped Bella in the back a few times, making her cough up the sea water she’d swallowed. “Are you all right?”
Bella tried to speak but started coughing again. She looked up to see two large figures running toward them. Liam tensed a little, but didn’t move.
They’d chased Victoria all afternoon until eventually she retreated into the water. They didn’t follow, but Jacob was suddenly anxious to get back to Bella. He knew how much time she spent on the beach, and if the red-haired leech decided to swim down the coast, Bella was a sitting duck.
He and Sam raced to the beach. Bella wasn’t in her normal spot, and that worried him. “What’s the Cullen doing here?” Sam growled, and took off toward the cliffs. Jacob’s stomach leapt up into his throat as he followed. Something had to be wrong. Several emotions ran through him when he spotted a blond man carrying Bella’s limp body out of the water. The scent of spicy vanilla overwhelmed his senses and everything suddenly fell into place.
Liam stood and put his hands up in a gesture of surrender when Jacob and Sam reached him. “I was only intervening. She decided to try cliff diving, and I didn’t think you’d want her to drown.”
Sam knelt down beside Bella. “Is that what happened? Bella, are you insane?”
“Sorry,” Bella croaked. Her throat and lungs still burned, and she felt too weak to get up.
Jacob stood staring at Liam. Even with clumps of wet hair hanging in his face and soaked clothes clinging to his pale form he was breathtaking. Seeing him in a dream was one thing; being in this demon’s presence was quite another.
“Take a picture, it’ll last longer,” Liam commented when he saw Jacob staring. It pleased him to know that Jacob liked what he saw, but the vampire wasn’t about to show it. “Like, seriously, she needs to be taken somewhere warm and dry.”
“Huh, yeah….” Jacob shook his head and brought himself back to the present. “Bells, are you hurt?” he asked with concern.
Sam’s gaze was flicking back and forth between Liam and Jacob. “Take her back to the house. I need to get to the hospital.”
Liam glanced out into the water and caught sight of flaming red hair. “Fuck it,” he sighed. “I’m already wet.” Then without another word he dove back into the water and chased after Victoria.
Liam’s scent hung in the air clouding Jacob’s mind, but he managed to scoop Bella up in his arms and drive her back to his house. He focused on taking care of her and trying to forget about the gorgeous vampire. Sam had to be wrong. He wasn’t gay, and he wasn’t soulmates with a leech. Jacob had never been more sure about anything in his life. He would continue to pursue Bella and he would win her, and they would be very happy together. He was going to make that puzzle piece fit if it killed him.
Once the shock of nearly drowning wore off, Jacob told Bella about Harry Clearwater’s heart attack. The news seemed to put things into perspective for her, and Jacob was glad of that. He didn’t want her to do any more reckless things.
They slept together on the couch until Billy and Sam returned from the hospital. Sadly, Harry hadn’t made it, and Bella decided she should be at the house when Charlie returned. Harry was one of his best friends and Charlie would need all the support he could get. Jacob drove her home, intending to stay the night since Victoria was still at large.
But when they pulled into the driveway a black Mercedes was parked across the road. Jacob tensed as he tried to figure out what was going on. “Leech,” he growled. “I need to get you out of here.”
“No!” Bella cried out. “I know that car. It’s Carlisle’s.” She remembered it from their trip to Phoenix. She could almost smell the leather interior again. She wondered if Carlisle was visiting Liam. She couldn’t think of any other reason he’d be here, and she didn’t dare hope it was anyone else.
“Are you sure?” Jacob asked, looking a little hurt. “What if it’s a trick?”
The question was answered when Liam came out of the house. He’d changed clothes and was now wearing a black sweatshirt and a pair of jeans that looked like they were painted on. Jacob’s heart started to pound wildly in his chest and his palms started to sweat. These feelings weren’t making any sense.
Liam approached the passenger side and Bella rolled down the window. Jacob turned his head and tried to hold his breath. Vampires were supposed to smell bad, not good enough to pin down and lick. “I just wanted to let you know Alice is here,” Liam said to Bella.
“Alice!” Bella cried out in excitement.
“I’d better be going, then,” Jacob mumbled. “I shouldn’t be here.”
“Why not?” Liam asked tilting his head. “Honestly, you don’t have to be afraid of me.”
The words surprised Jacob so much he turned to look at Liam, but he knew instantly that it was a mistake. They locked eyes and Jacob’s whole body went numb. “I know,” he answered just barely above a whisper. “I mean—” he shook himself out of the trance— “I’m not afraid of you. If the rest of your family is back, I shouldn’t be in your territory.”
Liam laughed, and the sound sent a tingle down Jacob’s spine. “It’s only Alice, and you’ll find that we’re not that territorial. Maybe I’m missing something, but I don’t understand why there has to be such animosity.”
“You wouldn’t,” Jacob growled as he got out of the truck. He had to get out of there, away from Liam. The urge to throw himself into the bloodsucker’s arms was getting too strong. “I have to go,” he said as he took off.
Liam watched him go. This was going to be a bit more difficult than he’d first thought. With a sigh he walked Bella inside. Alice was seated at the table and Bella launched herself at her. “I missed you so much!” Bella cried.
“I missed you, too,” Alice said, taking a step back. “But why did you do it?”
Bella looked to Liam. “You told her?”
“No, I saw you jump,” Alice explained. “I wasn’t keeping an eye on you or anything, but I’m already tuned to you, so I still see things sometimes. Bella, how could you? I knew we shouldn’t have left you.”
It dawned on Bella what Alice must have thought. “No, I wasn’t trying to kill myself. I just decided to go cliff diving. Jacob and his friends do it sometimes, and it looked like fun.”
Alice nodded but didn’t look like she believed her. “You really are a danger magnet.”
“Shall I do the ‘I was right’ dance now?” Liam joked. “I did my best, but she’s prone to idiocy.”
“Do the others know you’re here?” Bella asked, changing the subject.
“No,” Alice answered. “When I left, Carlisle, Jasper, and Esme were out hunting. My brother has been going off on his own a lot lately, so he wasn’t home, either. Rosalie and Emmett are in Europe.”
“Oh.” Bella was a little disappointed, but she was still happy to see Alice. “Will you stay—both of you?”
“Bella, we do have a home,” Alice argued.
“Please,” Belle begged. “Please don’t leave. Did Liam tell you about Laurent and Victoria?”
“He did,” Alice’s jaw tightened a little. “All right, we’ll stay, but we’ll have to go get our bags, and I’ll need to hunt. I should be back in about an hour.”
“Give me twenty minutes,” Liam said as he followed Alice out the door.
Bella tried to keep herself busy while they were gone. She thought Charlie might appreciate dinner, so she started on that. Liam returned before she finished. “You might want to put a little paprika in that casserole,” he commented as he tossed his bag into a corner.
“You know how to cook?” Bella asked, surprised.
Liam smirked. “I know how to do lots of things. I guess you fell asleep before I got to tell you about studying the culinary arts in Paris.”
“You really have done a lot. I don’t know why you think being a vampire is a bad thing. You wouldn’t have gotten to do all those things if you’d lived a normal life span.”
Liam took a seat beside her at the table. “Yes, but there are also things I can’t do any more. Like, I can cook, but I can’t eat it. Well, I could, but I’d have to bring it all back up later. I can’t experience an adrenaline rush. I can’t get cold, so I can never fully appreciate a steaming hot bubble bath; although that doesn’t stop me from trying. I can’t feel my heart pound in my chest when I make love to someone. And worst of all, I have to watch my lovers grow old and die.”
Bella put her head down on the table while she listened. “Couldn’t you just bite them?”
“No. I would never do that to anyone. I could never take the life of someone I loved. I guess that’s why I can feed on humans once in a while but spilled blood doesn’t bother me, in cases like your birthday party. I prefer human lovers, and unlike Carlisle I could never turn anyone, no matter what the circumstances were.”
Bella was quiet for a moment. She wondered if Edward felt the same as Liam and that was why he refused to turn her. Edward only ever argued with her about it. The way Liam was explaining it made sense. As much as she loved Edward just the way he was, she was starting to wish he was more like his uncle in some ways.
Before she could ask any more questions, Alice returned. “Did I miss anything?” she asked.
“I was just learning more about your uncle,” Bella answered. “I like him.”
“You and everyone else who’s ever met him,” Alice chuckled. “With the exception of Rosalie, that is.”
Liam grinned evilly. “I guess I’m just an exceptionally likable person. The Quileutes don’t like me much either, but I don’t think that’s a personal thing.”
“No, probably not,” Alice agreed.
It was then that they heard Charlie’s cruiser pull into the driveway. Bella ran out to meet him so she could tell him about their guests. She thought it might be too much of a shock for him to just walk in and see them.
“Hello, Alice. What brings you here?” Charlie asked when he came through the door.
Alice glanced at Liam, who gave her a little nod. “I missed Bella so much I thought I’d come visit. I’m sorry I didn’t call ahead. It was kind of a last-minute thing.”
“So no one else is with you?” Charlie asked, obviously probing about Edward.
“Just Uncle Liam. I didn’t want to travel alone, and he’s always up for spontaneous trips.”
“How long will you two be staying?”
“Only a few days. I’m really sorry about your friend.”
“Thanks,” Charlie mumbled as he made his way to the table where dinner was waiting. “Are you two joining us for dinner?”
“No, thanks, we ate on the plane,” Liam answered.
The rest of the evening was quiet. Bella ate only a few bites and then curled up on the couch with Alice, where she soon fell asleep. Charlie started to clean up, but Liam stopped him. “You go to bed. I’ll take care of this,” he offered.
“No, you two are guests,” Charlie protested.
“It’s fine,” Liam insisted. “You’ve had a rough day, and I really don’t mind.”
“Thanks,” Charlie mumbled again, and he headed upstairs.
Alice carefully got up from the couch and tucked Bella in while Liam did the dishes. “I really did miss her,” she said quietly as she took a seat at the table. “I’m glad she’s all right.”
“She’s an interesting girl, I’ll give her that,” Liam commented. “Edward is a damned fool.”
Alice could only nod in agreement. “He thinks he did what’s best for her, but clearly it wasn’t. Cliff diving today—what next?”
“Probably bungee jumping,” Liam laughed. “It wouldn’t surprise me.”
“Me either,” Alice sighed. “I just wish I knew what to do for her.”
“We’re going to spend the next few days visiting with her. After that, I don’t know, either.”
