Disclaimer: Freyanna is my creation. Though names are changed mostly, I don't own Pam Palmer's Feral Warrior Series or Karen Moning's Highlander and Fever Series. I make no money from this story. |
Pamela Palmer is the author of the Feral Warrior Novels upon which this story is based. I in no way own these characters but did borrow them for your entertainment only. Freyanna is my creation.
After Cougar dropped Freyanna off at her room supposedly so she could rest, he headed back to his room. Along the way he thought, Dear Goddess, when Freyanna came earlier, I felt so humbled by the look of trust, honesty, and caring reflected in her eyes. I’m sure I fell a little in love…I still don’t understand this craving for her, but I do enjoy sating it.
Cougar’s thought stopped abruptly upon entering his room. Sitting there on the end of his oversized bed was Anara, his not-dead-after-all, lying, wife. As he proceeded in he decided to feign indifference to Anara as he said, “Well, this is a surprise. Hello Anara, to what do I owe this honor?” Anara answered, “You asked for an audience. I’ve decided to grant you one,” she said smoothly as she stood. Cougar started slowly undressing as he said, “Sorry, I guess I should have rescinded my request. My needs have been amply met by a delightful little pixie. She was more than willing to help save the world, the Lunarian race, and hasn’t stopped rocking my world.” Anara drifted closer and snarled, “I thought I smelled a strange female on you. As I stand closer, it is obvious she has been all over you. You positively reek of sex.” “Really?” Cougar intoned through a smile and continued, “I love the scent of sex with her. She is very responsive. Her come is musky and sweet as honey. Her mouth is pure magic and her pussy is always so warm and tight, and wet. I’m getting hard just thinking about her,” Cougar said as he dropped his pants revealing the truth of his words. Steeping clear of the pants, Cougar moved into the bathroom and started the shower. Anara followed. “What are you doing?” she asked. Cougar paused after turning. Lifting one eyebrow he said with only a trace of mockery, “Well, I’m getting a shower. I need some sleep before I go on duty in a few hours and smelling my lover certainly won’t relax any part of me enough to get to sleep.” With that he stepped into the shower and began bathing.Cougar didn’t know whether to be surprised or pissed that Anara was still there when he came out of the shower. He continued getting ready for bed; brushing his teeth, gargling (which he knew Anara hated the sound of), and combing what hair he had. Once finished he slipped into bed naked and lay on his stomach. Once comfortable, he closed his eyes preparing for sleep, not that he would with Anara present.
Anara finally spoke, “Why did you quit calling me?” Cougar was surprised to think he had heard hurt in her voice. As she sat on the side of his bed, he lifted one eyebrow and considered saying nothing or being a sarcastic shit, but opted to speak honestly. With a cold, hard edge to his voice, Cougar answered as he sat up, “Fine, you want to talk. I quit trying to get your help when my lover showed up and used her considerable talents to save two of the eight Breed Warriors that were battle ready. She risked her life to save them from an Alchemist spirit trap. She used her magic to heal them and get us all out safe. I quit calling to you, my dear mate (not), my wife who should have wanted to help, because after seven days of humbling myself, of begging you to at least hear my request and getting no answer, I gave up on you…Eight Breeds Anara, nine when the new Breed marked after Coyote’s death presents him or herself, eight to fight Rasputin II and his Alchemist minions. Eight warriors are left to fight the soul thieves. Eight warriors are left to fight to keep Shatan and his demonic horde imprisoned. Why did I stop calling? Because continuing would hurt too bad and I’m too damn angry. Why do you think?...Just answer me one question and I’ll never call you again, Why did you lie to me, your husband and mate, break our mate bond, and pretend you and all the Ladies of the Mist were dead? Please tell me why you nearly killed me without a thought? Cougar shut his mouth and looked directly at the silent Anara. Slowly she said, “I never meant to cause you pain. I meant to free you. I had to protect my people, that’s why we had to make it look like we had all died in the attack.” She looked away before continuing, “It galls me to admit that my cousin was right. Earth was and is an unfriendly place to those who possess magic or are different in any way. What humans cannot control, they seek to destroy. Evil moves like the wind. Humans erupt into violence here, Alchemist strike Lunarian there, and on and on it goes…It really is no wonder, I just got tired of moving, of trying to fit in or hide who and what we are, of the fight. It was just easier…and harder (she added looking directly at him). A day hasn’t gone by that I haven’t mourned the loss of our life together, our love, and the children we would never have. I have missed you, that is why I had to be so harsh. I couldn’t give in because giving in might endanger my people.” Cougar waited a full minute before adding, “So you show your love by allowing me to nearly go crazy, by not answering me when I called out to you but sent guards to handle me, by cutting off my emotions? That’s how you show love?” Cougar allowed Anara to see all the grief, the pain, the anger, and the love he hadn’t been able to feel for so long, but had always knew he retained somewhere.” Anara sat there stone still and then said, “I know it seems that way. From your perspective, I have been a cold-hearted bitch, completely heartless, I’m really anything but. You know me. I have to put the good of my people first, even before my happiness. I honestly thought I was doing what was right.” Cougar was shaking his head, “Anara I loved you. I would have died to protect you and your people. With our mating, our peoples were unified. We were far stronger standing together than we could ever be apart…You threw all of that away. You threw us away. Haven’t you caused me enough pain? Better yet, why don’t you just cut my heart out now and end my pain? I’m tired of fighting. I’m tired of being angry? I’m tired of your cold love? Just go away Anara. Go away and never come back. Cougar rolled back over and turned to face the other way. He closed his burning eyes preparing for sleep. “Oh Cougar, I’m sorrier than you’ll ever know,” Anara cried softly. She then laid her hand on his shoulder. Blackness swirled in and took Cougar into oblivion and the sleep his body needed desperately.Chapter 11
Pamela Palmer is the author of the Feral Warrior Novels upon which this story is based. I in no way own these characters but did borrow them for your entertainment only. Freyanna is my creation. Freyanna woke to the sound of pounding feet and raised voices. “Keep it down, let her sleep,” she heard Talon rasp out. “Where’s Cougar?’ the angry growl of Wolf’s voice demanded. “He is obviously not here, neither is he in his room, his bath, or anywhere in the house or on the grounds. It looks like he just disappeared.” Freyanna sat up and clutched the sheet tight after it began slipping revealing her ample breasts for the split second before she remembered she was naked. Wolf grimaced at her naked condition. Freyanna’s voice trembled a bit as she asked, “What do you mean Cougar’s missing? Are you saying someone abducted him?” Freyanna got out of bed holding the sheets tight in a toga-like configuration as she rushed to the chest of drawers Lissa had thoughtfully filled with clothing and grabbed a sweater and underthings (which she had never worn before but felt might add a layer of armor against Wolf’s disapproval) and then a pair of jeans from the closet. She dashed into the bathroom to quickly dress. She donned socks and tennis shoes then turned on a now dressed Talon and the always hateful Wolf and said, “Wolf, I know you hate me for some reason and right now I don’t have time to care about that. I do care about Cougar. Please tell me what happened.” Wolf looked at her and said, “How do we know you had nothing to do with Cougar’s disappearance?” Talon looked ready to kill but Freyanna held up a hand to stop whatever he was going to say. She answered with cold steel in her voice, “I would never hurt Cougar or anyone else I have come to care for. Your suspicion of me is unfounded. I am innocent. I want to find Cougar as well. Why would I rescue two Breeds and heal them, then abduct one of their brothers, and then come back? Your chain of logic is completely unsound. For your information, Talon and I slept here, together, all night. Neither one of us moved a muscle I don’t think until you burst in flinging accusations. Now get the Hells out of my way, so I can go look for Cougar.” Wolf watched the obviously pissed Faeling stomp down the hall. He looked at the still pissed Talon and said, “Someone had to ask. It was better that I take the heat than Leo or Lissa even.” Talon kept silent and followed Freyanna out of the room and down to the second floor. As Freyanna approached the second floor landing, Panther stopped her from entering the hallway. He said, “I have to ask you to stay here, Celestia is checking Cougar’s room for any trace of magic. Leo’s with her.
Freyanna nodded and waited while chewing her bottom lip. Talon and Wolf caught up to Freyanna. Wolf moved passed and stopped at the door to Cougar’s room. Leo joined him at the doorway and they had a brief but intense discussion with Leo looking over at Talon and Freyanna occasionally. Eventually he came over. Leo said, “I guess Wolf told you Cougar is missing. There is no evidence of struggle. In fact it looks like he went to bed and then just vanished. I’ll be asking everyone questions. When was the last time either of you saw Cougar?” Talon said, “I saw him heading to his room about 7:30. He said he was going to grab a quick shower and sack out a while before his shift. I didn’t see him after that.” Leo looked at Freyanna and she answered his look, “I saw Cougar not long before Talon did. He had found me in the kitchen where I retreated because I was upset. He made me eat. We went to the media room and…were intimate. Fang can vouch for that. We didn’t know he was there. Afterwards, Cougar walked me to my room and left me there telling me the same thing he told Talon about showering and getting some sleep. I haven’t seen him since. Talon and I slept till Wolf barged in earlier with the news.” Leo glanced at Wolf who merely nodded. Then Wolf said, “Celestia isn’t sure what she’s reading. There is magic trace, but not Alchemist. That unfortunately leaves only you, Princess.” Talon muttered, “Son of a bitch”. Freyanna held his arm to keep him from going after Wolf. It wasn’t easy since he was turning partially Breed. Freyanna looked straight at Leo and reiterated her previous statement she had made to Wolf. “I wouldn’t hurt Cougar. Get this through your thick ass, idiotic, overly testosterone soaked, heads: I care about Cougar and would NOT snatch him from his home or hurt him.” She forced herself to take a calming breath before she said, “If there’s a single thread of magic, I will follow it. When I find Cougar I will do whatever I must to bring him back unless he refuses to return and I know he isn’t enthralled. Whoever took him will pay.” Freyanna pushed past Leo, Wolf, Panther, and Talon as she went to Cougar’s room. Leo had called the magic a trace, but Cougar’s room reeked with magic. There were Lunarian magic, Cougar’s; Alchemist magic, Celestia’s; and a slight whiff of Ladies of the Mist. Freyanna walked around the room letting her senses flare. Celestia had collapsed in a chair Cougar had in the corner of the room. Obviously Celestia’s attempts at tracing the magic, especially an unfamiliar magic, had exhausted her. Slowly, Freyanna circled the room stopping often when the feel of Ladies of the Mist magic was strongest. She turned to the group crowded into the door and announced, “Cougar was abducted by a Ladies of the Mist.” Everyone tried to speak at once. Lissa entered the room and whistled loudly. Silence fell. Lissa looked at Leo and used his own favorite demand for information, “Talk.” Leo explained, “You know Cougar is missing, presumably abducted. Celestia could feel magic but was unable to identify its source. Freyanna has checked and says the magic is Ladies of the Mist.” Lissa held up her hand to halt any further information from anyone as she processed the information. She said, “The Ladies of the Mist are supposedly dead, but that has never been confirmed.” She looked at Freyanna and asked, “How do you know the magic was Ladies of the Mist in origin? How sure are you? And most importantly, how can we get Cougar back?” Freyanna sensed Lissa wasn’t jumping to conclusions but seeking logical solutions. She respected Lissa even more. For that reason she spoke truthfully, “The Ladies of the Mist magic has a resonance similar to Fae magic because they were Fae long ago. Their magic is baser, more primitive in some ways, purer in others. This abductress shares a biorhythm similar to Cougar’s. That would indicate some sort of relationship between them. There is also no feel of anger in the magic, just sadness. That leads me to believe Cougar knew his abductor. How certain am I? I am very certain. To get Cougar back, I will follow the abductress’ magical trail. It will probably lead to the Aurora. The Ladies of the Mist who took him will be stronger there. She may have taken him for breeding. Occasionally, Ladies of the Mist chose warriors of renown to father future daughters. I’ll find out soon enough. Leo said, “You’ll take someone with you. I don’t want you going along. Besides the fact that some think you are complacent in Cougar’s disappearance, you might need one of us.” Leo looked directly at Wolf. Wolf muttered, “You are so going to owe me Leo.” He then approached Freyanna and said, “So how do we get there.” Freyanna took his hand and in the blink of an eye they were gone.
