I didn't move. I didn't think. I stopped wanting to live. That's how Kiandra found me the next morning. I heard the tray she was carrying hit the floor with a crash as she shrieked my name.
"What has happened in here?!" The bed creaked and sank several inches as she threw herself on the mattress and crawled toward me. I couldn't even summon the energy to look at her as she stroked my hair back from my face. "Dear child, what has been done to you?"
Fresh tears pricked my eyes and I sniffled, not wanting to answer her.
"I'm going to fetch the King. He will know what to do." She started to pull away. My hand shot out and grasped her wrist.
"Don't leave me," I whispered.
"Dearie," she started, voice soft and sympathetic. "I have to."
"No. Don't go," I begged her, finally sitting up, pain searing through my loins. "Please." She looked at me a long time, and sighed.
"Alright, dear one. I'll stay. But someone will have to tell him sooner or later." I looked down at my hands, saw the bruises forming around my wrists. And shook my head. Kiandra heaved a sigh. "I'll run you a bath. Get cleaned up while I take care of these bedclothes. Don't worry," she said quickly as I looked up at her in a panic. "I will call one of the other maids to come collect them. I won't leave you."
I lowered myself into the fragrant water Kiandra poured into the tub for me, closing my eyes and basking in the heat. Kiandra set about her task, pulling the covers from the bed and wrapping them up in each other, effectively hiding any evidence of my violation. I peeked through my lashes when the door creaked open, but she held to her word and only poked her head out long enough to tell a guard to fetch another maid. Closing my eyes again, I let myself drift, relaxing for the first time since Galbatorix left me. When the door opened again, I didn't even open my eyes. Until I heard the voice. My eyes flew open as Galbatorix ordered Kiandra from the room.
"I want to talk to my bride. Alone."
Kiandra looked troubled, but she curtsied dutifully and backed out of my room, closing the door with a quiet snick.
I averted my eyes, focusing on the bubbles floating on the surface of my bath water. When his hand dipped into the water, I started to shake, and when he started to caress my legs and up my body I tried not to cry. All he did for the first few minutes was touch. Then he spoke.
"Last night's revelations had me thinking, my love." His hand stroked up and down my leg, knee to ankle, ankle to knee. Over and over again. "You really remember nothing of what used to be. Nothing of our plans, our friends, even who you used to be. I was going to hurry our wedding plans along, but I will once again be forced to put them on hold. I am sorry my love," he sighed as he gathered me into a quick hug, misunderstanding my sudden twitch. "I promise you we will be married soon enough. But I want the chance to research what has been done to your memory. I suspect a spell, but until I can figure out what type and the intention behind it I cannot hope to undo it. All of my energy must be put into this task."
His hand started to travel farther up my leg and I jerked away from him, unable to stop myself. His face darkened and he straightened up, hand resting on my arm. "I will not have you pull away from me."
His hand tightened, grabbing my arm in an iron grip. I cried out, unable to help myself, and tried to pull my arm from his grip. Standing, he pulled me up with him, the water sluicing from my body and splashing around in the tub. We stood there for a moment, the cold air raising goose pimples on my body and making me shiver. Galbatorix's eyes traveled over my body hungrily. I shivered again, but this time it was fear. He grabbed my by both arms and lifted me easily from the bath and setting me on my feet on the plush carpet. I kept my eyes on the floor, even when he let go of my arm. I stood there, the cool air making me shiver, unable to bring myself to move, until Galbatorix's tunic landed on the floor at my feet.
"No!" I backed away, horrified. My eyes followed his hands as they went to the laces on his breeches. Tears pricked my eyes, blurring the edges of the room. Quickly, I retreated to the opposite side of my bath.
Concern filled his eyes as Galbatorix started toward me. Too late, I realized I had once again backed myself into a corner. His hand reached up, and I winced as he brushed his fingers across my cheeks.
"You are afraid," he murmured. I looked up into his eyes. He seemed sad. "I must find out who did this to you. I want my Artemis back." His fingertips traced their way gently down my body.
"My name is Tari," I whispered. I kept my eyes down, focused on a point a few feet away on the floor. His sharp growl brought my eyes back up to him. Anger had replaced the sadness. His hands gripped my hips, pulling me into him.
"I know who you are, even if you don't," he growled. "I will bring back your memory. One way or another." Quick as a flash, he grabbed me and turned, throwing me onto the mound of blankets piled next to the bed. I opened my mouth to scream, but he covered it quickly with his hands.
"Hljödhr," he barked, then let me go to finish working on his pants. I opened my mouth to scream again, but no sound came out. None at all. I looked at Galbatorix in horror. He only grinned and crawled toward me. The feral look in his eyes terrified me, and I tried to back away, but he caught me and held me down. I beat at him and tried to push him away, but he easily overpowered me, grabbing my hands and holding them above my head. The bruises sang with pain and brought tears to my eyes. "Malthinae."
He let go of my hands and started to caress my naked body gently. I tried to push him away again but realized with renewed terror that I was effectively immobilized, invisible bonds holding my hands where they were. I had no choice but to lay there and let him touch me. His leg slipped between my knees and tried to separate them, but I clenched them shut and refused to yield. Galbatorix sat up and looked at me.
"Why do you fight me so?" He grasped my knees and easily pulled them apart, kneeling between them so I couldn't clamp them shut again. He laid back down on top of me, tracing his hands slowly up and down my sides to my breasts, then back down to my hips. "There was a time you would have welcomed me into your bed. And almost did quite often. Had it not been for your miserable parents we would have been together many times before now."
I stopped struggling and looked at him, puzzled. He laughed, a genuine laugh of pure amusement. "Oh, darling, the look on your face. But I forget, very ironically, that you have no memories of that happy time. No matter, my love. I will leave straight from here and start my research immediately. Once we have had our moment, of course."
He took advantage of my momentary stillness to slip inside me, and despite his attempt to be gentle, the pain was immediate and unbearable. His movements this time were slow and kind, almost loving. I buried my face in the crook of my arm and wept as he had his way with me.
Galbatorix buried his face in my hair, gasping and groaning with every thrust of his hips. Soon his thrusts were coming harder and faster, his gasps were grunts and the groans were throaty moans. He grabbed my hips, pulling them up to meet his roughly. His fingers dug into my flesh, bruising it afresh as his body ripped and tore at mine. I heard myself whimper and the invisible bonds vanished as he loosed himself inside me with one final thrust. With a sigh, he rolled off of me. I lay as still as I could, hoping he would get up and leave me soon. I prayed that it was the last time he would touch me.
"Don't worry, love," he whispered, leaning up on one elbow to brush the hair from my forehead. "Soon enough you will remember me. And then we can be together. Just as it should be." He stood up and dressed, then walked over to the tub where my bath water was no doubt cold. He held his hand above the surface of the water.
"Verma," he murmured, and steam began to rise from the surface of the water. Galbatorix came back to me and, very gently, picked me up. He carried me back to the tub and slid me smoothly back into the water. It was pleasantly warm again. I looked up at him warily.
"What language is that?" I asked before I could stop myself. He only smiled.
"It's the Ancient Language, love. The language of magic. One that you never seemed to need when you cast your spells. You were quite gifted long ago. I can sense the power is there still, just hidden. Soon, though, you will be back to the way you were."
He turned and walked to the door. "I will send Kiandra back in to care for you. Just remember, Artemis," he added, turning to look at me. "You are mine."
The door shut behind him, leaving me to wonder who I really was, and if I really wanted to remember.
