“The identification on the body says Martin Lee, but the photo ID’s him as David Chang. Initial lab tests confirm it. Evidently Chang finally crossed the wrong person. They did a real number on him. I’m still trying to figure out what weapons were used.
The left wrist has been pulverized, all of his fingers and ribs were broken; all done before death. The cause of death was a major stroke. The guy lucked out and had a stroke in the middle of being tortured.” The coroner paused and took a bite of his hamburger before turning back to the body.
“The confusing part here is that all of the breaks are ‘clean’. Look at the hands, when I say all of his fingers were broken I mean each individual bone in each finger. The ribs are all precisely snapped at the same point. Machinery can break bones yes, but not this neatly. This was done with surgical precision. Whoever did the torture on this guy knew what they were doing.”
Freya Williams left the morgue deep in thought. She had her own suspicions about what had caused the death of David Chang. She had noticed the small mark below the left ear only because she knew what she was looking at. It was a Sinanju calling card, and her father was the reigning Master of Sinanju. She was confused by the other injuries. Even Chuin wouldn’t be able to snap bones so perfectly. It was time see what dear old Dad is up to lately she thought.

“Don’t blame me Smitty. Chuin and Kai took care of the garbage not me.” Remo said.
“We are just lucky that the coroner recognized him from his photo. The FBI was called in and the agent assigned was Freya. She recognized a mark on the body as being the work of the House of Sinanju. She was confused about the other injuries.” Harold Smith said.
“That was Kai’s Austrel B interrogation technique. Chang confirmed the connection with Prince. He didn’t know where Prince was but he gave us a starting point. I gave Ruby the address and she’s looking into it.”
“Where are Master Chuin and Kai now?” Smith asked afraid of the answer.
“Chuin insisted on putting Kai through the Sinanju purification ritual.”

Chuin bustled around the room lighting sticks of incense. He then went to the table where a collection of oils were arranged in clay pots.
“You must remove your clothing and take down your hair. You must be as you were when you came through the veil. There must be nothing that you were not born with to interfere with the purification.” Chuin said.
“I am no longer as I was.” Kai said. “The decarbonization and ‘enhancements’ have permanently changed me. I am more machine than man.”
“Then we will work with what we have. Take down your hair and disrobe. There is no need for modesty.” Chuin said matter of factly.
“The dead do not concern themselves with modesty.” Kai said as he unpinned his bun and loosened his braid. “However the sight of the mutilations can be troubling to the living.” He said as he took off his tunic.
Chuin gasped in shock at the sight of Kai’s chest. His eyes took in the protoblood port, the control rod ports and the large gash on Kai’s left side revealing a number of tubes. Anger filled his eyes as the rest of the mutilations were revealed. “This was done to you by these bioscholars?”
“Yes it is the process of creating a Divine Assassin.” Kai replied.
“Sit.” Chuin gestured toward a pillow before settling himself on a pillow facing a naked Kai. “I believe that purification is needed but not the ritual purification of physical cleansing. The sight of what was done to you disturbs me deeply. The body is a gift to be treated with great honor and respect. Your body has been greatly dishonored.
If it so disturbs me it must disturb you also. Before you tell me that the ‘dead do not’, hear my words of what I have observed of you Kai.
You say that you do not feel, yet you care enough for a woman to risk your own destruction for her, you protect a coward who would be best left to face the consequences of his actions and you consider the feelings of a metal head that would cheerfully kill everyone on the Earth except for you. These are not the actions of an uncaring man.
On some level you do care. If you can care for them then you must also on some level care for yourself. I seethe with anger just from the sight of you. What was done to you is an abomination. 1000 lingering deaths are not enough punishment for your bioscholars. If I feel so just looking at you then you are also affected. This is the purification needed. We will purify you through words.”
“What has happened cannot be changed, Master Chuin.”
“No it cannot.” Chuin said gently, “But a burden shared is a burden made lighter. Tell me of how you came to be in the hands of these bioscholars.”

“The residence belongs to a Dr ‘Jim Beam’ believe or not.” Ruby said with a laugh. “The deed was just recorded with the Tuscon courthouse two weeks ago. The real estate agent is listed as Johnny Walker. The sale was outright, no mortgage company involved. It seems Dr Beam was just put on the payroll of Fire Industries three weeks ago and was given a $1.5 million signing bonus.”
“I’ll give it to Gordons, he’s consistent. If the name came from a liquor bottle, it’s him.” Remo said.
“The furniture company made a delivery late last week. An Asian who identified himself as the butler signed for the delivery. Check out the guy’s name.” She said turning the paper so Remo could read it.
“Hikaru Sulu?!?”
“Yes it seems Mr Sulu was very grateful for the timing. He mentioned that there was a marathon of his favorite TV show airing that night.”
“Let me guess, Star Trek?” Remo said.
“You got it Sugar. Seems the delivery guy found a fellow Trekkie!”

Chuin was shaken to his very core. Kai’s words had revealed a place of such evil, such depravity it could not be believed and yet Chuin also knew that Kai’s words were truth. Chuin’s admiration of this man seated in front of him was without measure. The trials he had endured would have broken a lesser man and yet Kai retained and displayed a deep seated sense of honor.
“Neither a man nor a master is defined by their physical traits Kai, we are defined by what is here in our hearts and minds, in our souls.” Chuin touched his chest.
“Your Divine Shadow was not aware of this truth. He believed that your heart was a muscle that beat within your chest, your mind an organ held within your skull, your manhood a dangling bit of flesh between your legs. He believed that by taking these things from you, you would no longer be a man; but he was wrong.
It is your inviolate soul that makes you a man. Because it is inviolate, he was powerless to take it from you. He sought to make you less than you were and he failed. That is why when the appropriate time came, you crushed him beneath your heel like the cockroach he was.
By the words you have spoken your soul has been purified. The anger will come to the surface soon, you must release that anger. Thanks to David Chang we know where to find those worthy of your anger. Do not fight this anger let it come and consume you so that it may be released leaving you in peace. Blessings upon your journey from this moment forward, Master Kai.”

“Little Father I thought I’d make hamburgers tonight.” Remo said.
“That is fine Remo.” Chuin replied absently.
“Earth to Chuin. Have you heard a word I’ve said? You’re a million miles away. What is wrong with you?” Remo asked.
“I am just thinking about life in Kai’s ‘Light’ Universe. I cannot fathom how an entire universe could sink so deeply into the profane. To attempt destroy a man’s very humanity as a punishment. To defile and mutilate the greatest gift nature has given to create a weapon. And they called our Universe the Dark Zone. It is well that Kai and his companions destroyed it.”
