Chapter 9
Songs Soothe The Beast
She began speaking rapid English that if I were paying better attention, could have understood. But I was to buryinrying to think a way out of the predicament. After about three seconds I started to wonder why Kanaye hadn’t called off the groupies. Her grip didn’t exactly feel like soft goose feathers.
About the time when I caught the word whore come from her lips I found my voice.
“Let me go….”
I watched that flawless face cock to the side in a mocking manner. Her crimson lips pulled back revealing teeth that were so white they’d make a dentist cry. A pink tongue ran along e she sharp canines. Her fingers tightened around my arms until I thought she had ruptured a few veins.
“Mortal peasant. What does she have that we do not?” Her voice didn’t just raise goose bumps along my skin, it tore them up, yanking them to the surface so hard that I thought her voice had actually broken my skin. I must have done something funny because the surrounding vamps snickered and giggled, even raising their small hands to their mouths in an utter polite way. It was unnerving to say the least.
“Perhaps her bosom is more inviting, Mona.” One of them said in a small voice.
A look fell about Mona’s face that I couldn’t categorize, but I said a small prayer in my head that she wouldn’t do what I thought she was about to. Her right hand released my arm and her fingertips grabbed hold of my shirt. Shit. Without little thought I reacted and a voice cut through the tension like a knife.
“Mona!”
It was Kanaye. But it was too late, my fist was airborne and then connecting. I felt something burst and a warm liquid comparable to a thin pudding spurt across my handhad had hit her in the eye and when my fist was about to connect I raised one of my finger joints up a few centimeters, enough to cause her eye to practically explode against my fist. And I had done it al a f a fraction of a second. Mona was a vampire, she should haven abn able to move out of my blow, but she had underestimated me.
She screamed shoving me back arabbrabbing hold of that pretty face I had damaged. Mona shoved me with such force that I lost my balance and did a small dance to try and keep from falling. And just when I thought my ass was about to kiss hard wood floor a pair of strong arms caught me. I felt something hard rub against my head. Turning I came face to face with an erect nipple and a silver ring shoved through it. I didn’t think I could actually blush at a time like this, but…I did.
I shoved myself away from Haruko. Had to keep the badass image going just in case any of the other members of the harem decided to play more games.
Kanaye stepped forward and the harem parted like a great sea. The women stepped back, pulling on their frilly gowns, afraid they would slow them down. In the center was Mona, shrieking like a banshee. If I thought her voice had been painful before then I obviously didn’t know what I was talking about. Her voice was now like a metaphysical hand, raking its nails down along my skin. I stifled a sound in my throat. Now this hurt. I took a step back, as if maybe putting another foot between us would somehow magically stop the pain. I felt Haruko’s skin brush along my arm. I looked up at him through the corner of my eye.
“Her voice causes pain in humans.” He said, arms now folded across his broad chest.
I wanted to ask how, but figured questions could wait till later.
Kanaye spoke in rapid Japanese and Mona abruptly stopped screaming. My skin thanked her. She brought one hand away from her face and looked up at him with her one remaining eye. A white liquid seeped through her other hand, trailing down her cheek. Though I thought from the shrieking that Mona was infuriated her face betrayed her. It seemed to be filled with sorrow. For a moment I thought Kanaye was about embrace her in his arms, to ease away that sorrow that filled her. But I was wrong. He turned, putting his back to her.
He said, “Leave.” The word itself felt empty and hollow but the vampires obeyed without so much as a hesion, on, gliding down the hallway until the darkness swallowed them whole. Even Mona who seemed to be wracked with sorrow managed that sultry glide that almost every female vampire I knew had.
“Does your skin hurt?”
Haruko’s voice nearly forced my heart into my throat. I looked up at him, not really grasping his question.
“Um, no. She quit screaming so…” I looked down at my arms as I spoke. “Holy…” my arms were beet red, almost as if I had severe sunburn. I poked at my skin and thankfully felt no pain. “I’d hate to wonder what would have happened if she hadn’t stopped.”
“I’ve had the pleasure of being in her presence one to many times where she threw a few never-ending tantrums.” I watched those masculine lips pull back into a half smile. “After a while your skin gets used to it.”
I wanted to smile back but reality struck once again, reminding me that I shouldn’t be having any fun, I should be getting my dog and leaving. I didn’t belong here amongst these people.
“Follow me if you wish to claim your dog.” Kanaye said looking back at the two of us. For some reason his voice seemed different. The sea glass didn’t drip from his words anymore. Was he angry with me since I had hurt one of his vampires? And if so why should I care…right?
I followed after him, heading down the dark hallway. After a few steps I turned to look at Haruko. He stayed where he was, watching the two of us walk away. For some reason I wanted him to come. A part of me trusted a Tiger more than a vampire. Haruko must have seen the uneasiness in my eyes. He waved.
After walking in silence for a while, darkness dancing around both of us, I finally gained the courage to speak. “Are you angry with me for what I did to Mona?” I asked while trailing behind him. I diverted my eyes from his shapely backthe the dark walls that surrounded us. “She ’t l’t leave me much choice…” Something warm and soft pressing against my cheek stopped me in my tracks. I flinched. Kanaye had stopped and I hadn’t noticed, running into his naked back.
“Never at you,” I could feel the words vibrate through his whole body, slipping down his spine until they reached out to my sensitive skin. I stepped back as the sea glass ran along the line of my neck. It probably should’ve bothered me that he was playing these little games with his voice. But there was something about the feel of it that was so appealing. “Never at you.” He said again, this time turning his head to look back at me. A few strands of his dark hair had fallen loose from the half ponytail, hiding those beautifully done eyes from me. Then we were moving again.
“What only upsets me is the jealousy of my vampires. Because of their action I know you will now fear being near me or this place ever again.” I wat him him shake the hair from his face while we walked.
“Well it isn’t as if we had any long term plans, Kanaye.”
I waited for him to reply but he said nothing more until we came to the room that held Angus. I knew it had to be the room because inside it sounded as if some great monster was wreaking havoc. As soon as we came within a foot of the door Angus threw his body against it, causing it to shake and nearly buckle. He barked like a rabid dog and I could even hear his teeth biting at the door handle. Kanaye hed hed for the door handle but I beat him too it.
“I don’t know what Angus will do if you’re the first person he sees when the door opens.”
Kanaye cocked his head to the side, and then nodded. “Ah, understandable.”
I took a deep breath. Angus was furious, his emotions bled through the door and my mind soaked them in like a sponge. He thought I was being hurt and most of all he could smell were’s. If only I hadn’t brought him then Angus would be safe and at home with the only thing troubling him was whether to eat or take a nap first. I knelt down and pressed the palm of my hand on the wood door. And then I began to hum. It was quiet at first but I let it get louder until I was sure Angus could hear me. It was one of my favorite songs, a song that I was a little too embarrassed to sing aloud so I usually only hummed along. My voice vibrated within my chest and trembled down to my fingertips. Fges ges man thought a singing maiden could tame the wildest beast. I wasn’t sure how much truth was it but it did seem to work for me every now and then.
I heard a second voice, masculine, humming along with me and not missing a beat. He knew the song too. I looked over my shoulder to see Kanaye leaning against the far wall, head tilted forward with a curtain of silky hair hiding his eyes. His face slowly lifted up so that I could see his beautiful lips. And we hummed together, our voices filling the hallway, bouncing off the walls while we calmed the anger on the other side of the door. I tried to fight the smile that tugged at the corner of my lips. But I couldn’t. And there was that moment again between us, as if something great had just happened and for that brief moment we had connected. My eyes swept up his washboard stomach, noting the muscles beneath his silky skin, the line of his shoulders that lead to his neck. My eyes drifted even further along his face until I could make out those intense eyes hiding behind locks of hair like a tiger in a jungle. But like everything else I had been close to at once point in time I pulled myself away.
I got to my feet and slowly opened the door. Angus sat back on his haunches, head cocked to the side, ears perked up. “Hey you.” My words made his tail wag and before I knew it he leapt up on me, paw on either side of my shoulders, tongue slapping me in the face. On his back legs Angus was taller than I was, and not to mention weighed more than I did. I laughed all the while trying to get him down. When he finally got back on all fours he nuzzled my stomach. But the reunion was short lived; with one quick snort Angus realized there were to of us in the hallway. His ears pulled back and a snarl erupted from his jowls. Before I could get a hold of him he was bounding toward Kanaye who had flattened himself against the wall.
I turned as quickly as I could. “Stop!”
Angus’s nails scrapped along the hardwood floor while he skittered to a halt. Stopping only inches from the vampire. My heart thudded in my chest. “Come.” I said in a more tranquil tone. He turned from Kanaye and padded over to my side where he sat.
“Good boy.”
“He leaps through your car window, then finds the window closest to ground level and leaps through that, then runs like a stampeding bull through the building in search of you.” Kanaye said while he looked at the two of us.
Well the car window was certainly going to cost me. But it all seemed trivial now. Angus panted while he wagged his tail, not grasping anything that was going on between the Master Vampire and me. He had found me and I was ok, that was all that mattered to him. I ran my fingers through the wiry hair on top of his head.
“He is quite the loyal dog.” Kanye said. I looked up to suddenly see him standing on my other side, away from Angus.
“He isn’t just a dog.” I said, “He’s my family.”
