Chapter 9
Dawn broke over the horizon but the dense forest was still dark and cold. Alice sat beneath a tree holding her legs close to her chest. She was to exhausted to move anymore she had been running longer than she cared to remember. She watched her breath billowing out in thick clouds into the dark air around her.
This time yesterday she had been in a warm bed, wrapped in thick blankets and under the best care of a person who loved her. Mina, a sphinx, had bought time for Alice to escape when an enraged spider/woman, she believed the term was Drider, by the name of Aradia attacked the place where Alice had been staying. Now she was cold and alone deep in the woods, miles away from where she was supposed to be.
Alice felt the hot stings of tears in her eyes. So many people had suffered because of her. Kappu and his people had been infected because of her presence, Aradia had been driven insane with love when Alice rejected her and now Mina had suffered. What was she leaving behind to save? Nothing but wounds, scars and bed memories.
Alice wiped her eyes and sniffed quietly too herself. She had to save wonderland first and then she could worry about the people she had met along the way. She pawed through the bag at her side and pulled out a small compass. It had been changed somehow to always point to the location of the Maid of hearts. In her heart she knew she had a long way to go, days, maybe weeks of travelling on foot. Alice looked at her bare feet and sighed miserably. First with the fear then through exhaustion she hadn’t even thought about the damage she was causing to her feet. She had suffered many injures due to her first meeting with Aradia and not all of them had healed yet. Then she had sore muscles from running for so long. If Alice had to take a guess she would have to say she had covered at least ten miles, she had run too long for it to be anything less. Her feet were cut and blistered, tiny stones and thorns were embedded in the flesh dirt and blood caked her soles and was stuck between her toes.
She shook her head in dismay and glanced up at the green light beginning to find its way through the leaves. For a second she longed to be home, with her parents. Her life may have been boring but at least all her appendages were intact. She grabbed a knife out of the back and gingerly used it to pick the small stones and thorns out of the soles of her feet.
There was a rustling in the branches and Alice froze. She tightened her grip on the knife and slowly eased herself onto her feet. She winced as bolts of pain shot up through her body but she remained standing. In the branches around her there was a quiet chattering, like clicking of insect jaws. Alice looked around but couldn’t see anything. No shapes or shadows that would indicate a person or creature in the trees. Alice had to lean against the tree trunk to stay on her feet, if something attacked her she wouldn’t be able to fight it off and she knew it. There was more chattering and Alice held the knife up at eye level. He blade shone in the early morning sunlight that had been strong enough to pierce the canopy of leaves. A twig above her snapped, Alice threw her head back. A heavy thing dropped from the branches Alice didn’t have time to scream as it landed on her. She was thrown into darkness.
***************
There was something hard underneath her and for a strange moment Alice thought that she was lying on the hardwood floors in the library back at her family home. She must have fallen asleep reading into the night. Her parents didn’t approve of all the reading, not proper for a young lady. Alice moved a little, beginning to stir. Yes, a good book was exactly what she needed after all that terrible business. That business?
Her eyes snapped open and she sat bolt upright. She was not in her family library, not by a long shot. A cave of white stone, the place was dimly lit by strange stones on the floor that glowed a gentle blue colour. The place was warm but Alice shivered all the same, the alien landscape told her one plain and obvious thing; she was in deep trouble now. She looked down at herself and discovered what she had already suspected. In the dim light she could saw that she was naked, everything even her bandages had been stripped away from her. Her clothes and bag had been stolen away from her, she was completely defenceless against anything that might attack her.
There was a shadow in the corner, a large thing that was shaped wrong to be anything but a person. Alice squatted on her feet resting her hands on the floor for balance. This was both a defensive and attacking position depending on what the thing was. She could leap forward for a powerful tackle, or backward to keep a distance.
“Who’s there?” She said hoarsely, she realised just how dry her throat was. The shape moved and groaned quietly and Alice saw two large yellow eyes with slit pupils open in the darkness. In the blue light they looked slightly green, green and evil. They watched Alice glaringly.
“I know you.” He said with a pained groan. He moved closer, crawling on his hands and knees. Alice crawled backwards away from him, she didn’t know who this person was but her instincts that had developed through her long journey told her that he couldn’t be trusted. As he came closer Alice managed to pick out small details. His clothes were ragged and torn, but showed signs of once being a fine suit. His hair was unkempt but Alice could see two pointed ears growing out of the top of his head, one of the ears had a small piece missing, either cut or bitten away, about the size of Alice’s little fingernail. His hands were dirty and his nails were broken, but it looked like claws had once been there. Stretching out behind him Alice saw a furred tail, nearly a metre long. Alice gasped as a bolt of recognition crossed her mind.
“Chester Kat?” Alice whispered. She took another step away from him. Close behind her was a wooden door, thick looking and obviously locked. She remembered what he had done the last time they had met. Had he been the one to bring her here?
Chester Kat stopped crawling and sat on the ground he looked at Alice with lustful eyes. She knew exactly what he wanted to do to her. Her experiences over the last few weeks had matured her somewhat.
“I know you.” He repeated. He sounded exhausted. Alice looked at him again, his tattered clothes and unkempt appearance. She caught sight of a large dark stain on his shoulder, a bloodstain where he had been shot with an arrow the last time they had met.
“What happened to you?”
He looked down at his dirty hands and back up to Alice and she swore that she could see tears in his glowing eyes.
“In pain and close to death I wandered. Darkness began to take me. A wound too deep to heal. Three moons passed and I began to welcome my end. But just as I felt the grip of oblivion upon me I was found.”
“By who?” Alice asked, her curiosity beginning to get the better of her. Her fancy upbringing was ringing in her head telling her she should have said ‘whom’ not ‘who’ but this was no time for formalities.
“My wounds were dressed and my strength returned. Bt my carers had more than my well-being in mind.” He looked at her sadly. “They are the Krull. Dark creatures of the shadows. They healed me because they need me.”
Alice took a few tentative steps forward toward him. His eyes drifted over her naked parts and her first instinct was to try and cover herself, but with what? This was not a time for modesty; she needed to get out of here. ‘Know thy enemy’ was the saying in her world. The more she knew of these Krull the better it might aid her escape.
“What did they need you for? Tell me Chester Kat, what?”
He looked at her in the eyes and she saw dark marks under his. Marks made through exhaustion and days without sleep.
“The Krull are all children who serve their queen. She commands them to search, always searching for food and men.”
Alice felt a shiver run up her spine but she was too absorbed in what Chester was saying to realise just why at the moment. Chester continued.
“She needs men. She cannot mate with her children. She forces the men to mate with her and from them she steals their strengths and passes them on to her offspring. A new generation will be born different from the last, changed.” He put his head in his hands and quietly sobbed.
Alice looked at him, unsure of what to feel. They had done something to him, taken something. Something that was supposed to belong to him and him alone. Strengths didn’t just mean physical power. Skills and abilities could also me regarded as strength.
“What did they steal.”
He looked at her and she saw the tears running down his face.
“My one true gift. My power.”
“You’re invisibility.” Alice said. Seeing past the riddles of his speech she figure out it was that Chester Kat had that she hadn’t seen in any other creature of wonderland. Chester nodded his head.
“The Krull steal from others to change themselves. Make their kind grow stronger. The queen takes powers from the people she captures and passes them on to the next generation. She wants me to make her brood stronger, and when she is done, she will make me food for her children.”
Alice finally realised why shiver had risen up her spine. The queen of the Krull only sent out her children to look for men and food. Anything weak and injured, anything that could be easily overcome and captured would clearly qualify as food. They both needed to get out of here before the Krull got peckish.
The door behind her clicked, as the lock was being pulled open. Alice spun around to face whoever was coming in. her injured feet betrayed her and she fell onto her side as the door opened. Whatever improvised plan she may have had to tackle her captor was instantly forgotten not only because Alice had fallen, but also when she saw the creature she froze in fear.
The Krull stood at under five feet high, its frame was thin and light. There seemed to be no muscle or fat on its body, just grey skin stretched over bone. The thin and light body was necessary, growing out of its back were large bat-like wings. It had a squared head with long pointed ears and large white eyes and a mouth full of sharp fangs. It pointed to Alice with one of its three fingers and screeched. Alice may not have understood its language but the intent was universal, it wanted her to come with it.
“Don’t go.” Chester said grabbing her wrist. She looked at him and wanted nothing more than to stay. She guessed her destination; the dinner table.
The Krull screeched again. Alice gently released Chester’s grip and stepped forward. The Krull stepped aside so she could get out of the door. Alice walked slowly down the hallway and the Krull followed on close behind her. Alice dared a glance over her shoulder into the Krull’s dead eyes. Pure white like fresh fallen snow, she wondered how it could see. Then she couldn’t bear to look in them anymore and turned away. The Krull was short and light, there appeared to be no strength it its arms. Overpowering it might not be a problem, even with its sharp claws. The problem was that she didn’t now how deep she was inside the Krull’s nest, or how many Krull’s there were in the place. She might have to fight her way past hundreds, maybe thousands before she even saw an exit. Even armed she was sure she wouldn’t be able to defeat so many.
The rest of the Krull nest was the same as her cell had been. White stonewalls and thick wooden doors with glowing blue crystals to provide dim light. The air smelled damp and earthy and made Alice wrinkle her nose. It felt like they were moving downwards at a gentle gradient. Alice didn’t like the idea of going down, down likely meant further away from the entrance.
The Krull gave her a hard shove and a quiet screech. Alice guessed it wanted her to go faster. She picked up her pace slightly and the creature seemed satisfied. Alice walked silently, trying to take a mental note of all the turns saw in the corridors. The Krull kept her walking straight and ever downwards.
She saw other Krull out of the corner of her eyes, but they always vanished into the shadows before she got a good look at them. She saw the shapes of wings on most. Others were different, some had bulkier frames and horns. Others moved on all fours and clung to the walls and ceilings like lizards. All of them seemed to range between two and five feet, whether that was a smallness of youth or part of their various evolutions Alice didn’t know.
Ahead of her was a large opening with no door. It was ten feet high at least and Alice wondered why any door was twice as tall as the Krull she had seen. The blue light coming out of this hall was only brighter than the rest of the Krull nest by a fraction. The Krull guard gave her another hard shove. Alice stumbled forward and into the chamber. It took all of her will not to scream.
The chamber was as large as a stadium. One small path lead from the door to the back wall but the rest of the floor space was occupied by large green eggs, two feet high easily. They were placed down in organised rows and from inside a couple Alice could have sworn she heard scraping of movement, it wasn’t long before they were going to hatch. But the thing that almost made her scream was the creature at the end of the chamber. The queen of the Krull was over twelve feet high. Her body was coated in a thick black shell. She had six multi-jointed insect-like legs resting on the floor, but she couldn’t use them to walk, not anymore. She had a large swollen abdomen that stretched out behind her. The weight of the thing left her pinned to the floor. She had four arms, each one had an nine foot reach and four claws, eight inches long. Her head was large and triangular, red eyes the size of basketballs looked down at Alice and large insect mandibles clicked together eagerly. This was the queen of the Krull? But she looked nothing like her offspring. How many gifts had she passed onto her children? How many changes had she made from their original design?
Alice actually prayed that this was the queen of the Krull and not just the nanny of the eggs, anything capable of keeping such a creature in check would clearly come from the gates of hell itself. Then she felt sick as the thought of Chester Kat being forced to mate with this creature crossed her mind.
By Chance Alice happened to look down and for half a second hope returned to her heart. At the base of the queen was a familiar looking bag dirty and stained by its travels. The contents had been laid out in front of the queen, gifts for the royalty. Everything, the golden key, the bottles of liquid from the mushroom of size, the silver compass, the bead of logic, the sceptre of hearts and most importantly her dagger. The last of her weaponry she had received from Kappu and the Crudican tribe. But as fast as the hope had come it faded away, there was no way for Alice to reach her things, the queens massive reach and sharp claws would bring her down before she even touched the weapon.
The Krull guard left and went back out into the nest. Alice looked up at the queen with fearful eyes. The beast looked down at her with its mandibles clicking eagerly. Around them, there were more noises of scraping from within the eggs and Alice was certain that the creatures were going to hatch soon. She took a step backwards and the queen screeched loudly. Behind Alice two Krull stepped into the doorway, blocking Alice’s exit. These Krull were four and a half feet tall had thick powerful muscles all over their bodies and strong looking curved horns, like those of a ram, growing from their heads. Alice was trapped, there was no way for her to fight her way past the two Krull, especially unarmed and un-armoured. The queen let out small screeching noises that sounded just like laughter.
Alice looked around the room, vainly hoping that there might be another way out. Obviously there wasn’t one. One of the eggs nearby shook ever so slightly. Alice knew what was going to happen. The queen wasn't going to eat her, she had been brought here to be food for the new born brood of the Krull.
To her left, a shell in one of the eggs cracked open and a small gargled screech sounded out from inside. A clawed hand reached out of the shell.
To be continued.
