“Mommy?”
“Not mommy.” A very soothing males voice spoke instead. “It is time to wake up.”
“Why?” The small child of four sat up in his bed. He gasped when he felt no pain. “I don’t hurts any mores.”
“No.” A kindly man with deep golden brown hair stepped into the light. “You will never hurt again.”
His eyes were soft brown. His expression was kind and he wore a robe of purple. The boy looked at the tall man. He knew that this was a stranger and that he should run but he didn’t. There was something about this man that made him want to trust him.
“Why are you here?” The boy slipped away from his bed. He delighted when he could stand without the pain of a broken body hurting him. He gasped and looked up at the man. “I mean..” a little fear caught his eye. “I didn’t..mean to..”
“Shh.” The man knelt down. “You have no need to fear me.” He extended his hand. “I have come to take you to a better place where you will be happy.”
“You..have?” The boy slowly reached his hand out to touch the mans. “I won’t..hurt anymore?”
“No.” He chuckled. “I promise you won’t be hurt again.”
“Wait.” The boy looked around. “What about my mommy and daddy?” He looked fearful again. “They will gets mad and hurts me cause I was bad for leaving.”
“No they won’t. I am taking you to a better place where a new mom and dad are waiting for you. A mom and dad that will love you and never hurt you again.” He gently clasped the boys hand in his. “They want to hug you and will spoil you every day. I am sure of this.”
“A new mommy and daddy?” The boy looked confused. He often wished for new parents but he never thought he would get them. His own beat him when he was bad or when they were angry. “I..can..have a new mommy and daddy for real? Ones that won’t hurts me?”
“Yes.” The man stood and picked the boy up into his strong arms. “You can.”
“Can I sees them?” The boy smiled. “I want to be hugged.”
“Not right now. You will soon though.” He mussed the boys hair “I promise.”
“W...who is that in my bed? It is dark and I can’t sees them.”
The boy pointed to a still figure on the bed. It was almost completely covered. Blood stains covered the sheets. He looked away because those were his own blood stains from when his daddy got mad and beat him with the belt again.
“You are safe with me.” The man wrapped his arm around the boy to covered him in the robe. “Sleep and very soon..you will awaken to a new life with a new mommy and daddy to love you.”
“What’s...your..name?” The boy yawned. He was already half asleep against the man. “I’m..”
Sleep took him. He was taken away from one life to a place where he would begin another.

“Aslan!” Lucy shot up from the many cushions. She panted, looking around. “W..where?”
“Lucy are you alright?” Tumnus stepped into the tent. “I heard you call someone.”
“Oh..” She nodded. “I’m fine. I must have been dreaming.”
“You look pale.” Tumnus sat beside her. “Are you sure you’re okay?”
“I am sure.” She leaned against him and sighed.”I must have forgot we...were away from the palace.”
“You were so upset that we had to leave Peter right away that you decided to lay down.” He stroked his hand over her back. “You fell asleep.”
“Has Kale come back yet?”
“He has.”Tumnus frowned. “He said... Cair Paravel is not safe for you or for me. Or for anyone. One of his herd was killed by a creature of some sort.”
“That..can’t be true. Peter is there.” Lucy gasped. ”He makes it safe.”
“He doesn’t think that is your brother.” Tumnus knew this would be had to talk about. She wanted that to be the real Peter. “He thinks what ever killed his herd member is portraying it’s self to be Peter.”
“How is that possible?” She pulled away. “He knew so much about me. He even knew to call me Lu.”
“If I could explain.” Kale peeked into the tent. “I have a theory.”
“Kale.” Lucy looked at the roughed up centaur. “Are you alright? What happened?” She was already fumbling for her vial of juice, which father Christmas gave her years before. “Take this first. Then explain.”
Tumnus smiled at her. She was always very kind and thoughtful to others. Kale looked very rough. It was as if he was in a recent fight.
“One drop.” Lucy smiled as she got up and handed the flask to him. “It will heal your injuries.”
“Thank you majesty.” the centaur whispered.
Kale appreciated it. He let the drop fall onto his tongue and he swallowed gratefully. He could already feel the effects of the firefly juice running through him. He glanced to Lucy and handed the vial back.
“I am not sure what that creature was. I have never seen the likes of it in Narnia before.” Kale sighed. “When I finally approached your brother...to ask.” He shook his head. “This was not King Peter. He was violent and demanded I bring you to him. When I refused he attacked me.”
“He wouldn’t.” Lucy blurted it out. “Not Peter! He loves the people of Narnia.”
“As I said my lady, He was not the King.” Kale closed his eyes. “If it were not for Aslan showing up when he did I would be joining my brethren that has departed.”
“Aslan is here?” Lucy blinked. “So he knows. Where is he?”
“He is outside Lucy.” Tumnus held her hand gently. “Please try and calm down. No one is trying to ..lie or hurt you.”
“How did that thing know so much about me if he was not my brother?” Her eyes were already threatening to tear up. “He...knew.”
“Lucy?” Aslan now entered the tent. “Please don’t cry Lucy.”
“I will go check on the others.” Kale bowed to them. “Thank you again my lady.” He smiled and back out of the tent. “For helping me.”
Tumnus hugged Lucy against him and sighed. He didn’t want to be right about this but he was. Lucy shook her head and looked to the lion. It was hard not to cry. She wished so hard to see just one of her siblings again.
“That creature was sent by my brother.” Aslan looked up at them. “It was a creature of deception. He must have brought it with him from what ever world he had been in.”
“So this means he is here in Narnia?” Tumnus looked nervous. “Yes?”
“I am afraid so. It was why I was returning back to Cair Paravel so swiftly. I knew he would try and strike at you first. When I learned of his entrance ...” He shook his head. “Please forgive me Lucy. If I had stayed than you would not have to be feeling such hurt.”
“How did it know about Peter? About me?” Lucy wiped her cheek. Tumnus was content to just listen. “He called me Lu.”
“Because you wished it and when you wished for Peter to be there he got the image and feelings from you. That is part of his magic. If you had wished for Susan or Edmund at that moment he would have been them. The same can be said if you would have wished for me to be there.” Aslan explained. “He is trying to attack your heart and sadden you. If you lose hope than others will soon follow.”
“Your...brother is an awful person. He is ..evil.” She hugged Tumnus tighter and he held her back. “How can he honestly be your brother.”
“Because for every good there is an evil. We are exact opposites. It is as I explained before. The love I feel for Narnia is his hate. He wants to use narnia for his own nefarious mis-deeds.” The lion stepped closer and nosed against her hand. “By attacking your heart, he hoped to weaken Narnia.”
“I won’t let him.” She said with great resolve. “I know Peter and the others are safe. I know that you and the others will not hurt me.”
“We would never hurt you.” Tumnus kissed her cheek. “That is why, I believe, Aslan told me to guard your heart well.”
“Yes it is noble Tumnus.” Aslan smiled as best a lion could smile. “You did very well.”
“I didn’t want to be right though.” Tumnus shook his head. “I wanted my Lucy to be happy because her brother returned.”
“We must all grow and change Tumnus. We must all accept that Narnia has a future planned for us all.” Aslan turned. “I will leave you for now however. I must go see about gathering more of our friends.”
“Aslan wait.” Lucy pulled away and stepped over to him. “Aslan, please tell me something.”
“Yes Lucy?” He looked up at her. “What is it you wish to know.”
“I...There really isn’t going to be another war is there?” She was not sure if she could handle such a thing without her brothers or sister. “I..don’t..know..if.”
“I a not sure.” Aslan nodded to her. “I do know that it does not hurt to be prepared.”
“Thank you Aslan.” Lucy smiled but it still held a sad hint to it. “How..will we watch out for more of those creatures?”
“We must guard our hearts.” Aslan looked at the two. “Especially both of you.”
“We will.” Tumnus rubbed his hand along Lucy’s shoulder. “We will do it together.”
“This is good.” Aslan moved away from them and out of the tent. “This is very good” Aslan whispered.
Lucy waited until Aslan left the tent before hugging Tumnus again and crying. She was trying to stay strong. She really was but it was hard. Her heart was hurting greatly because of the deception it endured. Tumnus wanted to make it better for her but he didn’t know how. All he could do was be there for her.
“You look pale, Lucy.” Tumnus stroked her cheek with his finger. “Lets go outside and et you some fresh air, some water and maybe something to eat?”
“I..guess I am a little thirsty.” She wiped her cheeks again. “I’m sorry I am so emotional. I really don’t understand what is wrong with me.”
“Nothing is wrong with you. You were separated from your family. You were lied to by a dark creature and Narnia is facing dangers again. No one would expect you to be happy about any of this.”
“I know but still.” Lucy shook her head. “I need to try harder. I don’t want to let the people or Narnia down.”
“The only way you could do that is if you were not here.” Tumnus smiled. “You could never let any one of us down.”
“You have more faith in me than I do at te moment.” She looked up at him. “I am trying.”
“That is all anyone can ask of you.” He pulled her along with him. “And you should have faith in your self. You are very brave and caring. Look at what happened with kale. Without even thinking you were there helping him.”
“I was just helping to heal his wounds.”
“Yes..you were.” Tumnus felt that was enough. “You also help me.”
“How?” She walked beside him. Her hand in his. “Besides cry and get your shoulder wet with my tears.”
“You help me by being here and loving me. I am not a brave man Lucy. You know me. I am a very nervous soul. I was scared for a long time before you came along and helped me to feel light again.” He kissed the back of her hand. “Around you, I feel strong enough to be able to act. You give me courage where I did not have it before.”
“You were always brave Tumnus. You are the one that helped me remember?”
“Not before you helped me though.” He shook his head. “You made me brave enough to face unknown consequences against the white witch. It was you who helped me to realize that I could act for my self and not have to listen to her. It was you that helped me stand in the face of responsibility and be strong.”
“How so?”
“When you were crying and upset before. It was when Kale first came. He sought instruction. I would normally never have tried to stand up and be a leader for anyone. I was scared Tumnus the faun.” He smiled. “But I didn’t act scared that day either. It was for you that I did what I needed to.”
“You make me sound like I am special, Tumnus.”
“You are special.” He pulled her over to where a table was set up. “You are the love of my life. You are my mate. You are a queen of Narnia. You are a symbol of hope for all of Narnia’s people. Just look around and see. Open your eyes.” He motioned around the large camp with a simple nod of his head. “They are all here because you are and because you need their help.”
Lucy turned in a slow circle to take in the sight of the camp. It was large. It had to be at least as huge as the last time she was in a camp that Aslan helped to set up. The centaurs looked to her and smiled. The cats were all looking at her. There were people of all shapes, size and species.
“I never ...thought..” She swallowed hard. “They..all came because...of..me?”
“Yes.” Tumnus hugged her from behind. “Aslan told them you and he needed their help and they came. It is as I said, Lucy Pevensie.” He kissed her cheek. “Narnia loves you. The people love you. I love you.”
“I always thought they ..were only there because Peter the magnificent was there to lead them. I never really thought they liked such a small child as me.” Lucy’s pain was easing. The deception hurt but Narnia’s love for her made it soften. “They ...must be here for Aslan.”
“No love.” Tumnus chuckled. “You are not a child anymore. Peter is not here to take charge. This is all about you. You are the only queen of Narnia that is here. There is only one reason they come. That is because their queen and Aslan need them. Like it or not, you will have to accept that they want to serve and be loyal to you.”
“Tumnus,” Lucy whispered. “I love you.” She turned so she faced him. “Did you know this?”
“Yes I did but, “ He grinned, kissing her softly, “It is always good to hear it again.”
“You flirt.” She smiled. “You know what?”
“What?” He brushed a finger through her delicate, dark curls. “You want something to eat maybe?”
“No silly.” She let her fingers caress along his chest. “You always want me to eat. You will have me fat if I keep eating.”
“That is because you eat like a bird.”
“I do not.” She smiled still. “I eat like me.”
“Yes and you eat like a bird. You will never stay healthy if you starve your self.” Tumnus looked at the table. “See that food?”
“Yes I do.”
“That is for you to eat.” He picked her up and set her in the chair. “You are looking pale, like I said and you have not eaten hardly anything today.”
“Okay.” She laughed. “I will eat but after.” She bit her lip, blushing. “Maybe you could show me a little private spot?”
“O..oh..”Tumnus grinned. “Ohh..Your wish is my desire.” He sat down across from her. “But you have to eat a good amount first.”
“Mr. Tumnus. That is extortion.” She chuckled. “You are so bad.”
“I know and no I am not.” He pushed a plate of bread and fruits in front of her. “I am simply looking out for the welfare and health of my wife.”
“You better eat to. You’re going to need your energy.” She smirked. “Trust me.”
“You are tempting me.”
He took a bite of an apple and swallowed. Lucy nipped at the peach on her plate and nodded. Of course she was. She wanted to love the man that made her feel better. She wanted to love him period.
“Can I help it if I find you desirable?”
“Mmm..lets see.” Tumnus smiled. “I suppose not.”
“Tumnus!” She tossed a small piece of bread at him, which he proceeded to catch in his mouth and eat. “I really would be lost without you.”
“Not as lost as I would be without you.”
“Oh, here we go again.” Lucy chuckled. “Must you always do that?”
“Do what?”
“You know what I mean.” She sighed and looked around the camp again. “You seem to not know the value that you are. So we shall strike a new bargain. I will try harder to accept what you say if you try harder to accept that you are special. That you are someone important to me and to them. Alright?”
“You drive a hard bargain.” Tumnus never could see his value. That was part of his modest charm though. “I will try for you.”
“Thank you. Now.” She picked up another piece of peach. “Lets eat so we can ...go see about that private spot together.”
“Yes my lady.”
He grinned. Tumnus took another bite of his apple, nodding. Lucy shook her head, as he was being very silly. It was something she appreciated. He helped her to get over the hurts which darkness caused her. He was a real thorn in the side of the enemy because of it.
