Chapter 9
They walked into the kitchen to find that Betsy had left lasagna in the oven with fresh bread. “Baby, why don’t you grab us something to drink while I make up a couple of plates,” Darius said as he brought out a couple of plates from the cupboard.
“Okay,” Mia said as she went to the fridge and grabbed a beer for Darius and a diet coke for her and then sat at the table. After Darius brought the food to the table and sat, he took a long drink of his beer. “Darius stop hedging,” Mia told him.
“In order for my soul to be returned back into my body, my body must die.”
Mia looked at him, thinking that he could not be telling the truth. When he just looked at her, she asked worriedly, “Die?”
Darius looked into her eyes and said, “That is not what I am worried about. Artemis put our souls into a medallion. After my body dies you must hold the medallion to my bow and arrow tattoo, but if you should drop it, my soul gets released into nothing and I become a shade.”
“Darius I would never drop it. Is that why you looked so concerned?” Mia asked. She was confused because it didn’t seem too hard except for him dying. That should be the bad part in this yet he didn’t seem concerned about that.
Darius grabbed her hand and ran his thumb back and forth across her palm. “Mia, the medallion is hot for humans to touch. In fact, it is so hot that it will scar you. You will pay a price for returning my soul. I know you wouldn’t drop it but I hate the thought of you in pain because of me,” he said and looked away.
They ate in silence for a few minutes when Darius said, “When it is all over I will heal your hand. You won’t stay scarred.”
Mia got up and sat on Darius’ lap and threaded her fingers through his hair. “Have I told you that I love you this evening?” she asked with a smile.
“No, but you could tell me again,” he said while nuzzling just under her ear.
“I love you Darius. I don’t care about the pain. I can’t live without you. Don’t worry, it is a small price that is asked of me in order to have you in my life,” she said while looking straight into his eyes.
Darius gave her a deep kiss, “I love you Mia.”
Smiling, Mia whispered, “I know.”
Darius set her on her feet, “If you are done, I should call Ash so we can figure out what we are going to do about those spathi daimons and I want to see Merlin.”
“Yes, I would like to speak to that wizard,” she said, shaking her head.
“What?” Darius asked.
“It still seems so hard to believe…Merlin, Dark Hunters, daimons,” she sighed. “I will clear the table while you make the call.”
“Okay,” he said pulling out his cell phone.
“Hey Ash, anyway you could come by? I need to ask you some things and I need to talk to Merlin,” he said while he watched Mia take the plates to the sink and started rinsing them off.
“I am here,” Acheron said in the doorway of the kitchen while he stared at Mia’s back.
Mia froze. She had heard that voice many times as a child and was afraid to turn around and find that it wasn’t who she hoped it would be.
Acheron prepared himself for what was to come. The questions that she would ask and the answers he would have to give and he knew she would be hurt by them.
Slowly Mia turned around and tears started to fall as she saw him.
Darius was confused. He looked back and forth from Mia to Ash and was shocked when Mia said his name.
“Acheron,” Mia gasped then ran and hugged him, holding Acheron tightly, afraid if she let go she would find this a dream.
Acheron slowly put his arms around her and said, “Yes Mia, it is me. How you have grown into a beautiful woman.”
“What’s going on here Ash?” Darius demanded, narrowing his eyes.
Mia leaned back enough to reach up and took Acheron’s sun glasses off, “You haven’t aged one bit.” Mia looked into his strange silver swirling eyes. She remembered the first time she saw him. Just after her mother had died, she was put into an orphanage type place until a foster family could be found. She had snuck outside to the playground and sat crying under a tree. Then suddenly she felt strong arms lift her and cradle her, rocking her gently. She latched onto him and sobbed even harder. Her tears finally started to subside when he started to sing quietly, a beautiful melody, in a language she didn’t understand. She had looked up into the strangers face and found such pain and sadness in his eyes. They didn’t speak for the longest time, just stared at one another. Finally he coaxed some words out of her and they introduced each other. He quietly carried her back to her bed and tucked her in. He promised to come see her the next night and he did. He visited her every night until she was placed into her final foster home. Those visits were so special to her. She had, even as a child felt herself shutting down, becoming angry. He would come and tell her great stories and sing to her. She never told anyone about him and when he said that he wouldn’t be coming to see her anymore she cried but he said he would always be watching over her. As time passed she came to think of him as her guardian angel. She knew that he was magical and she accepted that he could no longer visit her.
Mia started to frown as she realized who he was. He wasn’t her guardian angel; he was head of the Dark Hunters. That would mean he knew about her mother. Then the realization came that he knew what was going to happen to her mother. She didn’t know how she knew that but she did.
Acheron saw the truth come over her and knew that she was hurt. He watched as she drew away from him and searched his eyes not wanting to believe the truth.
“My mother, you knew and you did nothing to stop it!” Mia sobbed then turned and ran from the room.
Darius took a menacing step towards Ash and demanded, “What did you do, how do you know her?!”
Putting on his sun glasses Ash simply said, “I visited her until she was put into a good foster home.”
“Why did you never tell me? You knew about her mother, you could have warned me, I could have saved her,” he shouted.
“Darius, some lives are meant to be short. Everyone has a purpose and hers was to lead Mia where she needed to go,” he said while he made his way after Mia. He found her out in the garden much like he found her when she was a child, only this time he was the cause of her tears.
Without looking at him she asked, “Acheron why, just tell me why?”
“Mia, it was her time to die. I wish I could save everyone but I can’t change fate. I couldn’t stand to see you cry, I still can’t. Please understand I didn’t want you hurt.”
Mia looked at him then. She could hear the pain in his voice. She knew what he said was true but it still hurt. “Why did you never come see me?”
“Because you needed to find your strength, and you have, all by yourself. Now I have a gift for you,” he said while crouching down in front of her.
She watched as he took a wooden box out of his backpack.
Without opening it she said, “It is Darius’ soul, isn’t it?”
“Yes.”
Mia took the box and held it to her chest.
Acheron stood and held out his hand, “Come, we had better go in before Darius comes out here with a sword to run me through.”
Taking a deep breath, she placed her hand in his and let him help her to her feet.
Darius stopped pacing as he watched Mia and Ash enter the room. He saw that Mia had been crying and he wanted to hurt Ash so much that he had to forcefully control himself to stay where he was.
Mia saw the rage in Darius’ eyes and ran into his arms and buried her face against his chest.
Running his fingers in her hair he asked, “Baby, you okay?” Mia just nodded her head and gave a sniffle. Darius glared at Ash, “You and Merlin have a lot to answer for, playing with our lives like this.”
“Did someone say my name?”
Both Darius and Mia looked to find an old man standing in the doorway wearing Bermuda shorts and a red Hawaiian shirt. He had a fluffy white beard and his eyes fairly sparkled with life.
Merlin looked at the confusion in Mia’s eyes then looked down at what he was wearing. “Oh, is this better?” he asked.
Mia’s eyes grew round with shock as she watched Merlin pull a stick out of his pocket which grew into a long staff. Then she watched as his clothes changed into a blue flowing robe and his beard grew to hang down to his knees.
“I haven’t worn this in such a long time. You can’t really blend in the twenty first century looking like this,” he said with a wink.
“Merlin what have you done?” Darius demanded.
Walking into the room he said, “I have protected your soul mate and my family.”
“Your family?” Mia asked.
“Yes, you are of my blood. I gave that amulet to my daughter. She then passed it down to her daughter and so forth until you, the rightful owner, received it,” he said while looking at her.
How much she looked like his daughter Meryle. The same spirit, except this one was a true warrior, just like the women of his time.
Mia stared at him. She had a relative? She wasn’t alone in the world. Even though he was a very distant relative, she now had a family, Merlin and Darius. She watched him open his arms and she ran into them, giving him a hug.
Merlin looked to Darius, “I must take Mia with me. Before you say no, know that I will bring her back. She must be taught how to use the amulet. That is the only way you are going to defeat those spathi daimons.”
Mia longed to spend time with him but didn’t want to leave Darius.
Seeing her reluctance in leaving Darius, Merlin said, “My child, the sooner you learn to wield the amulet the sooner you can return Darius’ soul to him.”
“Okay, what do I need to bring?” she asked while she went to Darius and hugged him.
“Nothing, I will provide everything.”
“How long will I be gone?” she asked while she looked up into Darius’ eyes.
“A week maybe, it all depends how hard you work.”
“Give us a minute alone,” Darius said as he pulled her up the stairs to his bedroom. The moment they entered his room he crushed her to him and kissed her, devouring her lips.
Mia moaned and held him tightly, not wanting to let go.
Finally Darius broke the kiss and looked down into her eyes, “I am so sorry for everything. Mia I love you.”
Mia caressed his cheek, “Darius I’m not going to break. I have too much to live for, to fight for. I love you too and will work extra hard so I can come back so you can hold me.” She pressed her lips to his then started to unbutton his shirt.
“Mia, as much as I would love to make love to you I would bet Merlin would become impatient and come storming in here.”
Mia smiled, “I know. I just want to take your shirt with me, please.”
“It is yours, anything I have is yours,” he said as he shrugged out of the shirt and handed it to her.
While she put it on over her shirt, he got another one to put on. They walked down stairs, hand in hand and Mia said, “I’m ready.”
“Come here child,” Merlin motioned for her to come to him.
As she walked over to Merlin Darius asked, “Where are you going? How can I reach you?”
“Acheron will know how to reach me. And the place we are going is Scotland,” Merlin said as he took Mia’s hand and then they were gone.
