"When is Henry coming back?"
"For the last time, Thomas!" said his exasperated elder sister, tying up her hair. "Henry is not coming back. Ever. And don't let Father hear you mention his name."
"But, I miss him, Edith."
"Go collect the eggs." she said plainly. "I'll milk the cow."
"What did Henry do wrong anyway?" asked Gregory. "No one ever tells us anything!"
"Eeeee-diit!" whined a tiny voice before Edith could say anything. "I can't put on my dress!"
"Oh, for Heaven's sake, Isabel!" Edith said as she helped her sister dress. "You're five years old! You should be able to dress yourself." She tied a kerchief over the little girl's hair. "Do you think you're big enough to feed the chickens?" Isabel nodded. "Good. Gregory, you go fetch some water." Edith, Isabel and Thomas approached the barn. The morning sun cast a dim, grey light.
"Why were they throwing stuff at him, Edith?" asked Thomas. "The other kids say he got whipped and was locked up. They were gonna burn him alive too! But he got away. Why'd they wanna do that to him, Edith?"
"Because- because he did something bad to Aubrey." Edith opened the door to the barn.
"But Henry likes Aubrey! He'd never do nothing bad to him."
"He'd never do *anything* bad to him." Edith corrected.
"That's what I said. Henry's good. He got away cuz he didn't do whatever bad stuff they say he did. But, how come he ain't come home?"
"Don't say 'ain't', Thomas." Edith arranged her hair under her kerchief.
"How come Henry didn't come home then?" asked Thomas
"Thomas, just get the eggs!" Edith snapped.
"You don't gotta yell." Thomas said sullenly. "Henry never yelled."
"Well, I'm not Henry. Now, go do your chores!" Edith took up the milk pail as Thomas took up the egg basket. She heard a clinking sound as she took up the bucket. She looked in it, expecting to see pebbles or loose nails. She gasped at the glint of gold. The rings were large enough to allow the tips of two of her fingers. The colored gems sparkled in the dim light that filtered through the chinks in the barn walls. One gem was pale blue; the other was milky white and glittered with rainbow colored sparkles when turned in the light. Edith was momentarily reminded of tales of pixies leaving presents for worthy mortals. *Don't be silly!* Edith thought. *Pixies aren't real!* The sound of the cow's moo reminded her of her task. Edith put the rings in her apron pocket and went to milking the cow.
"Eeeee-diit!" Isabel called out her big sister's name as she ran inside the barn. "Eeedit! Lookit! Lookit!"
"Isabel, you didn't leave that bag of feed open where the chickens could get in it, did you?"
"Lookit, Eedit! I found some pretty, shiny tings inna chick feed!" Isabel gave her some gold coins. Thomas came close for a better look.
"By Jesu, those're real gold coins!" said Thomas.
"Don't take the Lord's name in vain, Thomas." Edith scolded.
"Henry used to say it."
"Well, you're not Henry and you'd better hope never to be him!"
"Well, if you're so smart," Thomas put his hands on his hips. "Maybe you can tell us where that gold came from!"
"Pixies!" said Isabel. "Pixies gave us presents, didn't they, Eedit?"
"There’s no such thing as pixies!" said Thomas.
"Are so!" Isabel argued.
"Are not!" counted Thomas. They argued thusly, Isabel returning Thomas's "Are not"s with "Are so"s until Edith interrupted.
"No more arguing!" she said. "I'll show these to Mum and Dad after breakfast." She pocketed the coins. "Get the eggs, Thomas. Isabel, finish feeding the chickens. I have to finish milking the cow." The cow mooed. "I'm coming, Bessie!"
"Edith yells all the time now." Thomas grumbled to Isabel.
"She's no fun." said Isabel. "Where's Harry? He's fun."
"He hadta go away, Isabel."
"Why?"
"Just cuz."
Later, the family had gathered for breakfast. Master Shepherd led the family in prayer before partaking of the meal. "Dear Heavenly Father, we thank You for blessing us with the food that will nourish us as we work this day." Catherine gurgled. Her mother shushed her. "We ask You, oh Lord, to look out for all the family in this house this day." Albert banged his spoon on the table. "Keep all of us from temptation." He took away Albert's spoon. "We forever remain Your humble servants. This we pray in Jesus' name, Amen." The family chorused "Amen" Everyone over the age of seven crossed themselves. Isabel tried to, but got her left and right mixed up.
"Hey, Edith." said Thomas, poking at his scrambled eggs. "How come you wanna wait til after breakfast to tell Mum and Dad what Isabel found?"
"Thomas!" yelled Edith.
"Do I want to know what Isabel found?" Master Shepherd sighed.
Edith sighed and took the coins out of her apron pocket. "She found these in the chicken feed." She put the coins on the table.
Mistress Shepherd gasped. "My goodness, that's real gold, isn't it?"
Master Shepherd took up a coin, examined it, and bit it. "It's the real thing." he gasped.
"I found this." Edith revealed the two rings. "They were just lying in the milk pail."
Master Shepherd examined the rings as he did the coins. "The rings are real gold. I can't say what the gems are, but they look real. And that's not all." He put a small, sparkling diamond on the table. "I'm not sure, but I think that's a diamond. I found it in the sheep cote."
"But-but, why?" asked Mistress Shepherd. "Who would give us such valuable gifts?"
"You know who I think?" said Gregory. "I bet it was Robin Hood! He lives in Sherwood and he's always giving stuff away to the poor."
"We're not poor, Gregory." said Edith.
"Not rich either." Gregory pointed out. "And chores have been double tough since Henry...."
"Don't mention his name in this house!" Master Shepherd roared.
"Stephen, you're scaring Catherine!" Mistress Shepherd scolded as the baby in her arms began to cry.
Master Shepherd calmed down a moment and considered the rings and the diamond. "I'll take these to the jeweler in town." he decided. "If I get enough money for them, I won't have to sell so much of the stock when we move house."
"Move house?" echoed Edith.
"I'm sick and tired of the disgusted looks I've gotten these past three days whenever I go to town." said Master Shepherd. "I have had it with the Sheriff and his men constantly asking me questions I know nothing about. Parents won't even let their children play with our children because of our disgrace. The sooner we can leave the better." He buttered his bread. "That's all I have to say on that matter."
Edith was frozen in her seat. The family was moving. Henry really and truly wasn't coming back. She knew for a fact that her father would never allow Henry anywhere near the house again, but, still, there had always been a small, hidden hope that someday-maybe-she would see her big brother again. Edith wondered if he was well, how he had managed to escape before his execution. The questions gnawed at her mind.
Henry was quite well indeed, actually. He was up to his waist in cool lake water as Aubrey tenderly washed his back. Aubrey had gotten over his initial revulsion, but seeing the scars made him feel a twinge of guilt. *He got those because he loves me.* Aubrey thought as he paid his penance by cleaning the wounded back.
"I brought some salve with me." said Henry.
"Your wounds look like they're healing over." said Aubrey. "I don't know if they'll need it."
"It's not a medicinal salve." said Henry. "It's just some oil of aloe. Thought it might be better to use than just water."
"What do you mean bet-oh." Aubrey flushed. "Oh, I see."
"Would you like to try that position in the scroll you liked?" Henry asked casually. "Or, maybe that position that showed the two men sucking each other at once. That looked fun."
"Erm, well, since you brought salve," Aubrey said. "Maybe we could do that position I liked. I'll be on the bottom. You don't need dirt in your wounds."
Henry turned and kissed Aubrey. He held him close and whispered in his ear. "Do you like being on the bottom? Do you like my cock in your arse?"
Aubrey shuddered, aroused by Henry's words. "Yes...I like it." he gasped.
Henry swept Aubrey up in his arms and carried him out of the lake. He laid him on the cool, green grass and admired Aubrey's body. "You have no idea how beautiful you are." Henry said as he trailed a hand over the beloved body. Henry found his pants and took a small jar out of the pocket. "I'm going to make you feel good, Aubrey."
"Then stop talking and do it already!" Aubrey panted.
Henry smiled and coated his fingers with a good dollop of aloe. "Spread your legs a little for me." Aubrey spread his legs, trembling with anticipation. Henry stopped to kiss the inside of the thighs. "Mmm...such lovely legs."
"Oh, God, Henry, please!" Aubrey moaned.
Henry chuckled. "Alright. Here it comes." He gently touched the outer ring of Aubrey's passage, causing him to gasp and tighten up his muscles. *Just like the first time.* Henry thought fondly. Their first trysts had been mostly exploration. They were in the hayloft one night, Henry's fingers tenderly teasing the lower parts of Aubrey's body when they strayed to the passage. Henry had taken his fingers away when Aubrey seized up, thinking he hurt him, only to hear Aubrey beg for more.
"Oh, Harry, faster!" Aubrey was thrashing under the light, intimate touch.
"Easy now." Henry cooed. "I don't want to hurt you." He rubbed the salve all over the inside of the passage. "Does that feel good?" Henry twirled his finger inside.
"It feels wonderful!" Henry admired the look of ecstasy on Aubrey's face. Henry took the fingers away. "Why- why did you stop?" Aubrey couldn't keep the tone of pleading out of his voice.
Henry rubbed the salve along the length of his stiff and ready member. "Are you ready for me, Aubrey?" he gasped.
"Oh, yes!" Aubrey sighed.
"Let's see, to do it like that drawing in the scroll, you'll have to spread your legs, raise them up and bend them." Aubrey positioned himself. "Oh, you look so good like that, Aubrey!"
"Stop looking at me and fuck me!"
"Here, let me help you with those legs." Henry rested the legs on his shoulders. "Mind you don't kick me now." Aubrey nodded frantically. Henry began a slow, slick glide into Aubrey's passage, making Aubrey keen with pleasure. Henry started a slow, rhythmic thrusting. "Dear God, you are so hot, so tight." Henry gasped. "How're you feeling?"
"So...so deep....ah....." Aubrey shivered with pleasure as Henry hit his special spot. This position allowed a deep, filling penetration.
Henry noticed something he liked about this new position. He could see Aubrey's face. He could even lean down and kiss him. Their mouths locked. They tasted each other while Henry sped up his thrusts. They swallowed each others' moans of pleasure. Aubrey's hand wandered down and slipped between them, trying to give his penis the attention it needed. Henry lowered a hand to join him. "HENRY!" Aubrey screamed as he shook and shattered as his orgasm exploded. Henry gave him a few more good hard thrusts before spilling his hot seed in Aubrey's body. Henry gently slipped his spent cock from Aubrey's hole. They both looked at each other with huge grins.
"You liked that?" Henry helped Aubrey relax the kinks in his legs.
"It was incredible!" Aubrey sighed, looking gratefully up at his lover.
"We're both going to have to have another wash up." Henry fingered the goo on Aubrey's abdomen. "You made us both rather messy."
"*I* made us messy?" Aubrey chuckled. "You were helping out, you know."
"I know." They got back in the lake and washed off. This time, Henry washed Aubrey's back. He kissed a bare shoulder. "Same as last time. Count to 100 after I leave before you follow."
"Will Scarlet promised me a fencing lesson today." said Aubrey. "I hate to make him wait."
"Fine. Count to 50 then."
"And, you should probably leave your shirt off for a while." Aubrey suggested. "It's warm enough and your wounds need air to heal properly."
"I think you just want to see me parade around half naked."
"Well, you are good looking."
"Me? Good looking?" Henry had to laugh. "I'm too blunt, too bulky to be good looking. And those scars aren't exactly beauty marks."
"You're strong and handsome." Aubrey countered. "And you got those scars because you wanted to protect me. I was a fool for not saying anything."
"Let's not trouble ourselves with past unhappiness, Aubrey." Henry kissed his forehead. "I wonder if you've ever truly looked at yourself, Aubrey. You're definitely the better looking one of the two of us."
"Don't be silly!" Aubrey laughed. "I'm too skinny and my nose is too long."
"Your nose is the perfect length a nose should be." Henry kissed Aubrey's nose. "I'm getting dressed. Start counting as soon as I start walking. Aubrey nodded.

While Henry and Aubrey went to get clean (and a little dirty), Robin gathered Will Scarlet, Little John and Friar Tuck together. "I am really convinced those two are hiding something." said Robin. "First of all, I'm almost sure they're not brothers. Know that family Henry wanted me to help out last night? Turns out, it was his own. No hints at all that it's also Aubrey's family."
"They do seem rather fond of each other though." said Friar Tuck.
"I'm rather fond of Will here," said Robin. "And he's my nephew. I'm also quite fond of Little John and we aren't related at all."
"Why thank you, Robin." said Little John. "That's kind of you to say."
"Yeah, it was nice." Will said, a bit abashedly.
"I'd really like them to be completely honest with us before allowing them to join permanently." said Robin. "I don't think they mean us harm, or they'd have done it by now."
"Well, I'll bet you anything Henry didn't do that to his back on purpose." said Little John.
"How did Henry's family appear to be doing?" asked Friar Tuck.
"Oh, about as well as a shepherding family with six children could do." said Robin. "I got some more information about the family as Henry and I walked back here. He really does love them and was eager to talk, mostly."
"Mostly?" asked Will.
"He didn't seem to want to talk much about his father. Told me all about his brothers and sisters. The two youngest aren't quite old enough to help out yet. One's just a baby. He's quite fond of his sister Edith. He really misses playing with his little brothers."
"Been a while since I've seen my own sisters." Little John got a bit misty. "I-I think I might go visit them after I marry Rolly. I know they'll love her."
"I've promised Aubrey a fencing lesson today." said Will. "Maybe I can get him to say something about his own family."
"Good idea, Will." said Robin. "Any other ideas?"
"I could urge them to reveal their secret." said Friar Tuck. "You realize, of course, if they formally confess anything I am bound by God to tell no one. All I can do is set them on the right path. As the Apostle John recorded, Christ said 'And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.'"
"My guess is they've committed some crime they won't admit to." said Will.
"That's madness." said Little John. "What crime could those lads commit that they wouldn't confess to a bunch of thieves like us?"
"On the very same page of the Bible that I just mentioned," said Tuck. "Christ said 'Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.' Maybe they need to realize that we won't condemn them so harshly as they may think."
"Maybe," said Will. "Maybe that girl they mentioned wasn't as willing as they said."
"They don't seem the type." said Little John. "They don't seem particularly interested in any of the women here."
"That could be," said Will. "Because every lady here is attached to a man who would sooner kill a man than allow him to dishonor his lady."
"Well, except for Donna Hill." Little John pointed out. "And she'd thrash any man who'd try to pull something on her, I wager!"
"Um, actually...." Will squirmed a bit. "She, erm, is allowing me to court her."
"What?" Little John could scarcely believe it. "Well, good show there, Will!" He clapped his friend on the shoulder. "I knew one of these days you'd stop tiptoeing around her."
"Will Scarlet does not 'tiptoe'." Will said disdainfully.
Henry had taken a seat on an overturned log and was toasting some bread over the fire. David sat next to him, munching a peach. "You're causing quite a stir among the ladies dressed like that." he mentioned. Henry was wearing his breeches and nothing else. One of the ladies looked at Henry, flushed and tittered as she turned away. "I've heard Aubrey has a scroll with naughty pictures in it. Think he'd lend it to me? There's this tavern wench I've been trying to impress."
"You would have to talk to him." Henry said, retrieving his bread. "I'm not after anyone's wife. I'm simply letting my wounds get some air." Donna took a seat on a stump not far from them. She had a bundle of cut deerskin and a needle and thread.
"Do my eyes deceive me?" asked David. "Is Donna Hill actually sewing something?"
"You be quiet, David of Doncaster!" said Donna. "Else I'll sew your lips together!" David only laughed at the empty threat.
"What are you making?" asked Henry.
"A jacket." said Donna. "It won't stay summer forever." She looked at him through her eyelashes and smiled. "So, where's Aubrey?"
"We aren't joined at the hip, you know." said Henry. Donna laughed quietly. "What's so funny about that?"
"Oh, nothing." Donna went back to sewing.
"Likely went to answer a call of nature." David shrugged and went back to his peach. Aubrey joined them and sat between David and Henry. Henry gave Aubrey some of the toasted bread. "Morning, Aubrey." said David.
"Good morning, David." he responded.
David leaned closer to Aubrey and whispered "I hear you have a scroll with some interesting drawings in it. Mind if I borrow it?"
"Um...I already leant it to Luke." Aubrey whispered back. "He's the one with the chipped tooth, isn't he?"
"You leant it to Luke Book?" David laughed. "Don't let Agnes find out!"
"Well, he offered me a crown for it and promised he'd give it back by this evening."
"What are you lads talking about?" asked Donna. "It's rude to whisper around people, you know."
"Oh, it's nothing." said David. "I just asked Aubrey if he could loan me something."
"Oh, you mean that scroll of naughty pictures?" The boys blushed. Donna continued her sewing as she talked. "Oh, come on, do you think I'm so delicate you can't mention naked people around me?"
"Um, how did you-uh-know?" asked Aubrey.
"Little John told Rolly and she told me." Donna tied off a stitch, bit through the thread and rethreaded the needle. She smiled to herself as she remembered how she and Rolly speculated on how Henry and Aubrey would use that scroll.
"Ready for your first lesson, Aubrey?" Will approached them.
"I'm ready." Aubrey stood and put a hand on the scimitar at his hip.
"Then let's begin." Will drew his sword. Aubrey drew his. Henry and David turned from the fire to watch the lesson. Donna occasionally looked up from her sewing to watch. "There are seven basic moves in swordplay." said Will.
"Only seven?" said Aubrey.
"When you know how to combine them, it looks like more." said Will. "Donna, help me demonstrate?" Donna laid aside her sewing and drew her sword. "We have shoulder to knee going left, shoulder to knee going right." Will made the motions with his sword. "You can slash across from the left, across from the right, then there's the forward thrust." David and Henry chuckled. Will gave them a death glare and went back to his demonstration. "You can slash up from the left like so, or from the right like so. The trick is knowing which to use and when. Let me show you again." Will stepped closer to Donna and repeated the first move. Donna used her sword to block him. "And Donna is showing how you would parry the first move." Will demonstrated the moves and Donna demonstrated the corresponding parries.
"The forward thrust is one of the more difficult to defend against." said Donna. "It's best to jump or spin out of the way and return with an offensive move."
"How can you tell if the person is going to thrust?" asked Aubrey.
"You read his body language." said Will. "That takes a quick mind, ready reflexes and a good lot of experience. However, I think we can train you to fight without losing any major limbs on the first try. Why don't you try some of the moves I showed you on Donna?"
"Don't worry." Donna said with a smile. "I'll try not to hurt you."
Aubrey gripped the ivory handle of his scimitar and faced Donna. They raised their swords and Aubrey tried the first move. Donna parried. She tried the third move. Aubrey tried to block it, but was holding the sword rather awkwardly. Will showed him the right way to do it. They practiced more moves and parries. "Here's an idea." said Will. "Aubrey, your blade is curved. Use that to your advantage. May I?" He took hold of the scimitar. He did the first move on Donna and was parried. "What you can do, Aubrey, is use the blade's curve to hook under your enemy's blade and pull it away, like so." Will demonstrated. "Granted, that will take practice." He gave the scimitar back. "Let's see how you do the defensive moves." Will swung at Aubrey. Aubrey parried. "Not bad." Will did a few more moves, holding back a bit so his student could practice the parry. "The thrust has to be followed by an offensive move, Aubrey. Swing at me." Aubrey swung his sword at Will and was parried. "Come on, you can do it harder than that!" Aubrey swung harder. "I said harder you limp wristed poof!"
Aubrey wasn't sure what happened after that. Just that Will's words filled him with a blind rage. The small audience that had gathered to watch the lesson were shocked to see quiet, unassuming Aubrey suddenly make a series of wild slashes at Will while howling his fury. His blade was stopped by Robin's interception. "That's enough, Aubrey!" he shouted.
Aubrey blinked and came back to his senses. He was holding his scimitar over Will, who had lost his sword and was bleeding from a severe cut on his hand. He wore a look of complete shock on his face. Aubrey felt his face burn as he realized what he just did. "I-I'm terribly sorry, Will. I honestly didn't mean to, I'm really sorry." Aubrey was babbling. "Here, I'll fix your hand for you." He led Will over to where Agnes stored her herbs and bandages. Aubrey mumbled more apologies as he dressed the wound.
"Ah, I've had worse wounds than this." said Will. "You caught me by surprise, I'll admit. I will advise you not to go into a berserker rage too often. It's not good when a fighter can't think because they're blinded by anger. You shouldn't have taken what I said so personally, though. I was just getting you to try harder. I don't really think you're a limp wristed poof." Aubrey tied off the bandage and walked away. Will turned to see Donna. "Ah, Donna! Come to kiss it and make it better?"
She did not look amused. "How could you?" she asked.
"How could I what? Donna, he hit *me*!"
"Well, you needn't have said- said those things to him!"
"What? Calling him a poof? Donna, that's just what men do."
Donna rolled her eyes. "That's just what men do. If I had a farthing for every time I heard that I'd be richer than Prince John!"
"Donna, " Will sighed. *Just when I'm getting somewhere with her, I do something to set her off!* "So, I said something that wounded his pride. My father said things like that when he taught me to use the sword. I knew he didn't mean it. Aubrey's just being too sensitive."
"Maybe *you* need to be *more* sensitive!" Donna snapped before storming off.
Will walked off into the woods, found the strongest, most solid oak he could find and beat his head against it. "Stupid! Stupid! Stupid!"
