Chapter Nine
“This is completely typical of her. She could never be on time for anything that had plans for. She didn’t even arrive on time for her wedding; we actually had to stall for thirty minutes because she didn’t arrive on time.” Charlie babbled over his hot cup of coffee. We had been waiting for Renee and Phil to arrive for twenty minutes. They had called to let us know that they weren’t going to make it in time, but we had still been waiting, impatiently, for them.
I flipped my hair over my shoulder and glanced at him with annoyance. He had been grumbling about her mercilessly and both Edward and I were getting a little tired of it. At first I was really upset about meeting them here for dinner. I was going to be telling them all that I was pregnant by the end of the meal and the anxiety of it had caused me to feel nauseas. But after we had gotten Renee’s phone call Charlie had gone into a grumbling being of annoyance and all feelings of panic had faded away.
“It’s not her fault Dad. When we left earlier they were still getting ready to leave and we didn’t give them very good directions. At least she didn’t forget, they just got lost is all.” I sipped my water and checked my watch again. Thirty minutes late, they were thirty minutes late and I was beginning to think that they were up to something else besides getting lost.
“Would you like to order for your party or wait a little longer?” I glanced up and saw the tall blond waiter standing beside our table for the fourth time since we had been waiting. His pencil was poised and ready to take our orders, as it had been each time he stopped by, and he was smile cheerfully down at us.
Edward stiffened beside me when he saw the waiter’s smile broaden when his gaze met mine. He cleared his throat loudly to get the waiters attentions, “We’re still waiting if you don’t…”
“Edward here they come,” I interrupted quickly and waved them toward us. My mother’s face looked flushed from the cold outside and she wore an apologetic smile.
They both quickly took a seat and my mother looked at Edward and me, “Sorry about that kids. We really don’t have any idea where anything is still. It’s been so long since I’ve been here that I completely forgot everything.” She looked at my father and nodded her acknowledgment, “Charlie, it’s been a while.”
“Yes it has, great to see you.” Charlie said uncomfortably. His gaze drifted to my stepdad, “You must be Phil Dwyer, I’ve heard a lot about you from Bella.”
“All good I hope,” Phil exclaimed with a smile. He extended his hand and Charlie shook it firmly.
“Of course,” Charlie said with a tight smile.
I cleared my throat, “The waiter is waiting for our order.”
Everybody ordered a meal, including Edward, and chattered through dinner. I sat uncomfortably quiet trying the think of a way to break the news to my parents. Edward watched me from time to time and hugged me against his chest to tell me he was there for me. I smiled up at him weakly and my stomach threatened to turn upside down again. Perhaps I should just tell them. Maybe if I just say, ‘hey you know what, I’m pregnant,’ that wouldn’t give me as much grief because they would be in utter shock. No, I couldn’t just come out and say it. I might give either of my parents’ heart attacks. I picked at my food quietly and listened to the aimless chitchat that was going on at our table.
Just as everybody was finishing up, my plate left mostly untouched gaining me dirty looks from Edward, I felt something bump lightly into my hand under the table. Scowling I looked at my hands, careful not to catch attention, and my mouth fell open at my discovery. In my hand were two cards. Each was exactly the same and there was a picture of a child holding a teddy bear on the front, no not a child, it was a baby. Inside the card there was a long speech about the excitement of a new arrival into the family. Why hadn’t I thought of breaking the news with a card? It seemed more reasonable then just blurting it out and waiting for the rain to pour down. Or maybe it was just the easiest way for a chicken to let somebody know about a pregnancy.
I looked at Edward and he gave me a loving look. Then he whispered “I thought this way it may be easier.”
“Thanks, I love you,” I whispered back.
“And I you, love,” he said softly and pressed his lips against mine.
“What are you two whispering about over there?” Renee’s voice rang out from across the table. I cringed and leaned away from Edward with the cards in my hand.
“Erm…well Edward and I were just discussing something. That’s all.” I said and peeked at the inside of the cards again. Each of them had a little note written in them in what looked like my writing, but I hadn’t seen them before. Then it dawned on me when I saw the signatures at the bottom. Edward had forged my writing.
“Actually we would both like to discuss it with all of you if you’d like.” Edward nodded at me encouragingly and I swallowed a lump that had formed in my throat. I would just have to bite down and bare it.
“Sure, what is it that you want to tell us,” Renee asked curiously.
I pulled the two cards out from under the table and handed one to each of them, “I’d like it very much if you’d read these.”
They looked at me questioningly and took the cards out of my hand hesitantly. I bit my lip and waited for what seemed like and eternity for each of them to open the cards and read them. I was breathing so shallowly that I gasped for a breath of air and Edward looked at me worriedly. I shook my head at him and watched both of my parents closely. Renee’s face paled dramatically and Charlie turned an unhealthy shade of red. I bit my lip until I thought it would bleed and then it happened.
Charlie leaned forward and glared at both Edward and I, then under his breath he bit out, “How could this happen? What could the two of you possibly have been thinking? Do you know how irresponsible the two of you have been?”
“Not to mention you both have futures ahead of you that aren’t going to be the same with a baby in the way!” My mother had violently handed the card over to Phil who was looking at it as if it perplexed him.
“You don’t want to make the same mistakes that Renee and I made when we were younger. I knew this marriage wasn’t going to be a good idea and now, to make matters worse, you’re pregnant. Wait a minute! Is that why the two of you are getting married? You knocked up my daughter so you figured you could fix it if you tied the knot. Do I have the story straight now?” There was a vein bulging out on the side of his forehead and if he didn’t quiet down he was going to draw a crowd.
Edward’s face changed dramatically. He no longer played the part of the future son-in-law. No, instead he glared at my father dangerously, “I can assure you that your daughter and I were not aware of the fact that she was pregnant when I asked her to marry me. Nor do I see that as a problem even if it were true. Either way we are engaged and we’re getting married tomorrow.”
“Listen here you little bastard, you might not give a rats ass about your future, but I’ll be damned if you don’t think care about my daughter’s. Do you have any idea how hard it is to be so young and have children? You don’t get to go to school and get an education to better yourself. You work two jobs to support your family and to hell with whatever it was you had planned before. You’re new priority is to make sure that that baby and your spouse are healthy and taken care of.”
“Again I can assure you that neither Bella’s nor my future is in jeopardy. I have enough financial stability to take care of our family. I have enough money to put Bella, myself, and our baby through college and have plenty of money to spare. You need not worry about financial problems. My family…”
“Does your family even know about this baby?” Renee asked evenly. She had shot a warning glance at Charlie to calm him down as well.
“Yes they do. As a matter of fact, Edward’s father is my doctor.” I glanced at both of them challenging them to protest.
Renee sat with her mouth opened, stunned, “How long have you known about this? Hmm? How long have you been keeping this a secret from you father and I?”
“We’ve known for a couple of weeks now…” I murmured softly.
“And what does Edward’s family have to say about this? I bet their pleased as pie…” Charlie glared at Edward as he said the last.
Edward smiled unkindly, “Yes as a matter of fact they are. They’re glad that we’re getting married and starting a family. They actually had enough respect to congratulate us and wish us well.”
“You son-of-a-bitch, how dare you sit there and insult us. We’re her god damn parents for Christ sakes. Sorry if we aren’t jumping for joy over this announcement but we wanted better for our daughter then becoming some house wife.” I stared at my father in disbelief. He’d never used harsh cuss words in front of me and the fact that he was shooting them off at Edward was insanely strange. He was obviously very, very upset at the both of us.
“Charlie please calm down and think about this rationally. I know this isn’t what we had planned but it’s out of our hands and we need to be supportive.” Renee was speaking so softly that I had to look at her to be sure she was speaking and it wasn’t just my imagination playing trick on me.
“Do you have any idea what you’re getting yourself into?” Charlie asked sadly. I shot a look at him and saw that he was leaning back in his chair stare at me disappointedly.
“It’s not a matter of what we’re getting into Dad. It’s a matter of what we’ve gotten ourselves into and yes, we both understand and have accepted that. At first I was worried that we would turn out like the two of you. That we would fall out of love and have a child that was pulled from one parent to the next like I was. But then I realized that you learn from other people’s mistakes and I wanted to do better then you did. I wanted to have this baby, get married, and spend my life with Edward, happily mind you. I’m not going to fail like you did. I’m going to do my best to prove the two of you wrong. We’re not too young and we do know that we’re in love.” I was almost hyperventilating I was so upset and Edward tried to calm me. I brush his calm away, “Edward, take me home. I don’t feel so well.”
Edward nodded, placed forty dollars on the table to cover our food cost, and stood up offering me a hand. Together we walked out of the restaurant and out into the rain. As soon as we were outside and to his car he turned to me, “Bella, love, are you alright?”
I leaned against his chest for support and hugged him tightly, “I’m fine. I’m just upset that they couldn’t even be supportive of me, of us.”
“They just want better for you, that’s all. I’m sure that if you’re future was set, if we were older, and we were financially stable they wouldn’t care that you and I were getting married or having a baby. In their mind you have so much more that you should experience first before having a family. They think you should enjoy life a little more before bringing a baby into it.” He rubbed circles across my back comfortingly.
“You’ve heard them think those things?” I looked up into his face and brushed away tears I hadn’t even known I had shed.
“Yes, they just worry that we’re rushing into things and that you’re future is ruined because you’ve decided to settle and have a family.” He kissed my head softly.
“I can’t believe they were that mean to me, oh god, or to you for that matter. I’m so sorry that you had to deal with that. I could have saved you from that by just telling them about it alone. God, I’m sorry Edward.” Tears began to well up in my eyes again and I felt a break down coming on.
Edward smiled crookedly at me, “It’s already Bella. They worry about you and they see me as part of the problem, not the solution. Charlie wishes he had put an end to our relationship and Renee doesn’t know what to make of me yet. She’d just upset that everything that’s happened in your life that they disapprove of involves me as well. I don’t think she’s my biggest fan either. But, it’s alright, I understand. If it were my daughter I would probably reaction just an irrationally as they did. Probably even more so, as a matter of fact. Really, it’s alright that they’re mad. Right now their wounds are fresh, eventually they’ll heal over and it will seem as if it never happened. Plus, what makes you think I would like you do this alone? Charlie might have called you mean names instead.” He murmured jokingly and kissed the tip of my nose. I smiled tiredly and leaned back in the car seat.
“Edward lets do something different tonight,” I said quietly.
“Like what, love,” he asked, not certain about what I was talking about.
I turned my head to look as his curious expression, “Let’s go stay in a hotel and enjoy our last night as an unmarried couple. I really don’t want to deal with my mother tonight and I know she’ll want to talk about it. I’d rather not be stressed out the night before our wedding.”
“Alright, where would you prefer staying?” He turned the key in the ignition and the car purred to life.
“Someplace nice, but don’t think about it. Just pick a place and we’ll go. I don’t want anybody to know where we are. Alice would have a cow if she knew that I wasn’t going to be spending the night at your house. She had a list about a mile long with everything that needs to be done written on it. She’s worried that if we don’t get an early start that we won’t get everything finished. Plus the groom isn’t supposed to see the bride before the wedding.” We drove in a blur of speed through the town until we came to a nice place off of Olympic Drive. Edward pulled into an empty parking space and made haste to open my door and usher me carefully through the rain into the lobby.
There was middle aged woman with bright red hair standing behind a low counter. As we approached she looked up and smiled at us cheerfully, “Welcome to Olympic Suites Inn, how may I help you this evening?”
“We’re looking for a room for the evening,” Edward pulled his wallet out with one hand; the other was wrapped snuggly around mine.
“For just one evening sir?” Her hands were flying over the keyboard quickly as she looked up the rooms that were available.
“Yes, one evening will do.”
“What size bed would you prefer? We’ve got one King size and a couple Queens available.” She looked up at us questioningly.
Edward glanced down at me and I shrugged not caring what size bed we shared just as long as we shared one. He took my shrug and in invitation to decide, “We’ll take a king size bed.”
She nodded her head and asked Edward for the rest of his information. After a few moments she grabbed a key and handed it over, “Alright, that’ll be eighty-nine dollars even kids.”
My mouth dropped open in shock. Edward acted as if it were less expensive then he had anticipated. With a friendly crooked smile he handed the woman five twenty dollar bills and told her to keep the change.
“Have a nice evening you two. If you need anything don’t hesitate to call on our services.” She waved goodnight and sent us on our way.
Edward found room four and led me up the flight of stairs leading to our room. The rain poured down upon us until we made it under the coverage of the hallway. Quickly Edward let us into the room and closed the door behind us before flicking the lights on. For the second time in twenty minutes my mouth fell open as I gazed about the room. It was a spacious room, or should I have said apartment? There was a cozy living room, a small kitchen, and an enormous bedroom with a king sized bed inside. I walked about amazed by what all I found.
“Is it alright?” Edward walked up behind me where I stood gazing out of the living room window into the night.
I turned around and looked up into his face, “It’s absolutely beautiful and it’s given me an idea.” I murmured the last before brushing my lips against the side of his cool neck.
“Enlighten me sweet Bella,” He whispered above my head. I grinned and exhaled a warm breath against his cold skin.
“Well I was thinking, this is the last night before we’re a married couple. What would you say about giving our single lives a send off?” I grabbed his hands and pulled him slowly backward into the room where the giant king sized bed waited. He watched me with an amused look on his face, but he didn’t object to my suggestions.
“You may use me as you wish, my heart, body, and soul are yours to do with what you wish.”
I lifted a brow at the mention of his ‘soul’, “Your soul as well hmm, well I’ll treat them all kindly.” I pulled him to the edge of the bed and pushed him down slowly. He let his body move where I directed it to go until he was stretched out sideways on the bed. I climbed on top of him until I was straddling his hips comfortably. He lay motionless underneath me and gave me free reign over his body.
I pushed his jacket lightly over his shoulders and he leaned up so that I could pull it out of the way and toss it aside. His shirt was a pale blue button up and my fingers easily made their way down the front to expose his flat stomach and smooth muscled chest. I had just gotten to the button and zipper of his jeans when his pocket started vibrating. I gave a yelp of surprise and leaned away from his body. Edward cursed and yanked the sleek silver phone from his pocket.
“Hello,” he grumbled into the phone. I ignored the call and leaned down to pull is jeans open. “No Alice, I’m busy right now. Tell them that we’ve gone away for the night and we’ll see them tomorrow at the wedding. I…Alice…shit, Bella your mother is distressed that you’re not at home right now. She’s actually yelling in the background about how she and your father aren’t very happy with either of us and that we’ve got to sort things out before tomorrow.”
“Geez, tell Alice to put her on the phone.” I grabbed the phone and crawled up to rest on the pillows. Edward watched me as I placed the phone next to my ear, “Hello mother.”
“Bella where are you? We need to talk about this, running away isn’t the answer,” Renee stated matter-of-factly.
“That’s funny, isn’t that what you did?” I said before I thought the statement through.
“Yes, I suppose that is what I did, but it was for the best of us all. You shouldn’t run away from you parents. We only want what’s best for you and it wasn’t right that you left before talking it out with us.”
I exhaled heavily, not believe what she was saying, “Mom I wasn’t about to sit there and listen to both you and dad yell at or lecture Edward and me. I’m a little over a month pregnant and I’m getting married tomorrow. Don’t you think the night before my wedding should be a happy one, not one that’s stressful and strenuous?”
“I understand that it wasn’t right for your father and me to yell at you or lecture you. We’re just taken back by this. We don’t want you to have to go through the same things we did being so young and having a baby,” she spoke sadly into the receiver.
I closed my eyes and though of a way to get through to her, “Mom, you just need to realize that this is what’s going to happen. I’m going to have this baby in eight months and Edward and I are going to raise it. We’re happy that we’re having this baby and we’re not going to get rid of it. I’m sorry if this is hard for you to understand. But, I love Edward and he loves me, and this baby is a blessing for us. It’s something that neither of us imagined would happen and now that it has we have accepted it and we’re happy that we’re going to have it.”
There was silence on the other end of the phone for long moments and I started to think that maybe she had hung up on me. Eventually she cleared her throat and spoke, “Well I wish you and Edward the best of luck with the baby. I hope you’re pregnancy goes well and that you baby is healthy. Congratulations are in order so congratulations. If you need anything at all let me know alright? Don’t hide anything from me like this anymore though. I might be upset for a while but I’m always here to support you.”
“Thank you mom, I appreciate it. Is Charlie really mad,” I asked. I really hoped that he wasn’t too mad with either of us.
She laughed lightly over the phone line, “You know Charlie, and he overacts about everything, especially when you’re concerned. He’s a typical dad, when somebody hurts his baby he’s sure to be mad. I still don’t think he’d forgiven Edward for leaving you not so long ago.”
Edward shook his head in agreement with Renee’s last statement. He of all people should know if what it was that Charlie thought. I grinned, “No, as a matter of fact we know he hasn’t. I think he tolerates him because he knows there isn’t any way around it.”
“Well I don’t know about that. He could always kidnap you and send you someplace far away.” Renee chuckled over the phone.
“And I would always find you, no matter how far away you were sent.” Edward whispered so that I could hear. There was a fierce promise in those quiet words.
“I bet he would love that, but it won’t happen. He’s going to have to understand that I’ll always love Edward and no matter what we would find each other again.”
“I know, dear, and I’m sorry about tonight. I really should have been saying congratulations instead of talking down to you. You’re both adults now and I can’t tell you what to do and how to do it,” Renee sounded a little upset about the last comment and I smiled. Maybe Charlie was right, perhaps Renee wasn’t going to take kindly to the fact that I was growing up and forming my own life.
“Well, thank you again mom. I know you are just worried about us and you don’t have to be. Edward is going to take care of us,” it was the very first time I had used the phrase us that I was including the baby into. “And I know we’ll be happy. You don’t have to worry about my anymore.”
“I know and I love you so much babygirl.” She said in a watery tone. I felt a pang of sadness fill my own heart. I wasn’t going to be her little girl any longer. I was going to be a woman, I was going to be a mom, and one day I was going to go through this with my own son or daughter.
“I love you to mom. You should try and get some rest tonight. It’s going to be a big exciting day tomorrow.”
“Alright, I can take a hint. You stay out of trouble tonight. I’ll see you in the morning.”
“Okay, night mom.” I hung up and handed the phone back to Edward.
He set it on the table and crawled up beside me, “That sounded like it went alright. Better then planned really.”
“Yes it did and I’m glad she is alright with it for right now. She’s being supportive at least, even though I know she isn’t one hundred percent happy. It will be alright with her, its Charlie I worry about.” I murmured and leaned my head on his shoulder.
“Don’t worry about Charlie, things will get better. Now, where were we?” He pushed me down against the pillows and brushed his lips heatedly against mine.
Sorry I haven't updated in a while. My life has been turned upside down and all around with different things happening with work and the holidays lol. Soooo I thought I would give you a treat and let you have four chapters to yourselves. I hope you enjoy and thank you very much for the reviews, they are super sweet and I am really at a loss for words. But thank you so much.
