This had turned out to be quiet a sad day indeed. First when she woke up finding herself having been moved and unclothed, then into a wedding gown, and drug down an isle, agreeing to the most disgusting and bazaar vows she’d ever heard of in her life, witnessing her new found husbands rage, and watching a crewman lose his life as he died right before her eyes . . . . by her newly acquired husbands hand. To top that all off, her wedding night was going to be the same as any other, except heavy laden with sorrow, regret, remorse, and pure sadness.
She leaned her forehead against the door for a moment, trying to muffle her cries and stop her tears. Everything seemed so hopeless, so pointless. Caitlin’s thoughts where abruptly shaken as a golden light suddenly appeared in the closet behind her. The small room had been pitch black until just then, with no candle lit. Slowly, she turned almost afraid of what was awaiting her this time. Just as she turned fully, the ball of light flew up in her face. Caitlin could only see the light and saw how it flew at her, instantly her mind deciding it was a lightening bug. Perhaps the biggest lightening bug in all the world.
Raising her arms Caitlin tried to bat the thing away from her face. Finding herself successful in smacking it once, and it seemed to stop for a moment. However, the glow of the room suddenly turned from gold to red. The bug came at her again with a merciless vengeance before landing on her bare shoulder and biting down as hard as it could. Caitlin screamed smacking the small bug away again, only to have it attack and bite again.
James had not gone far, having no intentions of leaving the Cabin less his men start roomers behind his back. Ending of course in a high body count and he did not wish to deprive himself of an entire crew in a matter of days. He could hear a slight struggle and Caitlin’s arms smacking about against the door and the wall. “Caitlin?” He questioned allowed wondering what was going on. When he heard her scream, he scrambled to his feet, running to the closet door and trying to jerk it open. Only to find that she’d already turned the latch, to keep intruders out while she changed her clothes. She screamed again, even louder then before. “Caitlin, open the door. CAITLIN OPEN THIS DOOR IMMEDIATELY!!” He said banging his good hand against the solid oak door that kept them separated.
Whimpering as the small bites to her skin where painful and stung worse then any bee sting she’d ever encountered. The little ball of light started to attack her head pulling at her hair, causing her to cry out again. Caitlin fell against the door, breathing deeply before crying out again at another pull of hair. Her hand moved along the wall finding the latch and turning it, her weight caused her to fall back out of the room. James moved quickly catching her before she could fall to the floor. He looked at her, seeing how quickly her hair had become a mass of curls thrown in every single direction. “Caitlin, what happened? What went on just now?” He questioned quickly. However before she could utter a word, his answer flew out in a glow of light, hovering above them for only a moment.
Caitlin might not have know what the small thing was that was attacking her, but the Captain had become well acquainted with such little glowing creatures of light. His eyes narrowed, as he looked at the little creature recognizing her right off. Releasing his bride, he stood moving quickly after her around the corner towards the dining room part of the Cabin leaving Caitlin trying to pull herself back together.
Taking a deep breath she looked around with a sigh, “What next.” A rhetorical question, which she could only pray would not be answered. Turning on her heel she headed back into the closet, looking around carefully first. All the clothes that had been removed the night before while she slept, had been returned to their proper places. She didn’t see anything else, and decided that small bug was the only danger she’d had to face. Closing the door behind her, she went to the mirror lighting the candles in the holder on each side of it to light the room. When she blew out the match, she saw two pairs of eyes and a young face staring at her in the mirror. It only took her a matter of seconds to realize that face was behind her, less then a foot away.
She spun around falling against the mirror, taking in a deep breath to scream but his hand came up and cupped her mouth preventing her from making any noise. “I have to get out of here lady, I’ve been trapped in here all day.” He looked at her a moment, giving her a questioning look, “You won’t scream will you? If you swear not to scream I’ll let go.” Caitlin nodded her eyes still wide. The boy looked at her for another moment wondering if he could trust this grown up, or if she was really one of the pirates. He decided taking a chance would be a lot more fun, having been cooped up inside all day long.
He took his hand away from her mouth, prepared to make a run for it, except that she didn’t make a sound like he’d thought she would. Speaking quietly to him, “What are you doing here? Are you the cabin boy?” She questioned, thinking that could be the only way he got in here in the first place and would explain why he didn’t want to get caught in the Cabin’s wives closet.
The boys face scrunched in disgust as if he’d just been completely insulted, “I’m no pirate!” Crossing his arms over his chest standing up strait, “I just wanted to see what game you were playing with them early this morning.” Caitlin studied him for a moment, he looked as if he was trying hard to be tough. Something that many little boys often did when they were living in the shadow of someone else.
“Game?” She wasn’t aware that there was a game being played on the ship today, that she was apart of anyway. “What game are you talking about?”
“The game, you where wearing this dress and you could be seen from the island, you could be seen from the other side of the island.” He said putting his fists on his hips taking a wider stance.
Was it possible this boy was so uneducated that he didn’t know what a wedding was? “That wasn’t a game, it was . . .” Suddenly all the mixed emotions she’d been suffering from before the lightning bug attacked her came flooding back, she looked down and spoke solemnly, “It was my wedding.”
The boy moved closer dropping his head so he could see her face, looking at her curiously. “Is it not a fun game?” He asked seeing the change in her expression and what looked like sadness in her eyes.
“For nearly all people, it’s the most wonderful game in the world I suppose. There was just something about this time that wasn’t so much fun.” The boy watched her for another moment before standing up strait.
“Well that’s easy. You were playing it with a bunch of grown-ups and Hook! He’s not very good a games that I don’t play in too.” He half smiled looking at her, “I know, come with me and you can teach me this game. I will play it better then anyone has every played it, and I shall win too!!” He thought a new game sounded like absolute fun, and he grabbed her arm and started to pull her towards the door of the closet.
“Boy, I . . . I can’t leave. I have to stay.” He turned and looked at her frowning.
“Why? Why do you have to stay.” He said not knowing why she would rather stay here on this pirate ship, rather then go with him and play games on the island.
This boy seemed so completely innocent. He must have been 11 or 12 years old. “Because I’m married now. I can’t leave the ship without Jam . . . . .without Captain Hook’s permission.” The look on the boy’s face resembled that of a blank slate, as he did not understand what she was saying. “. . . I belong to Captain Hook now boy. I’m his wife, his girl.” He laughed, now he knew she was playing a game with him. No one could ever want to be with the mean old codfish.
“Where are you from lady?” He asked, looking at her. Her accent was strange, not at all like hook’s, or anyone else he’d ever heard before. Except himself of course.
“I’m from . . . .” Caitlin paused, starring at the boy for a moment. “I’m from. . .” Still the sentence did not finish. She looked away from the boy swallowing, feeling very uneasy all of the sudden, “I don’t know.”
Outside Hook had cornered the little Pixeh, leaning over her holding his hook at her chest. “There is no. . .such . . .thing. . .as. . . .” He stopped making his threat completely clear, as her little head shook quickly and her hands waved in the air wanting him to stop before he sealed her doom. Hook was satisfied with this and started questioning her, “Where is your ‘friend’ Miss Bell, you traitorous little wretch. Or have you come governed by jealousy once more, wanting another of his admirers crushed that you may have him for yourself.” Using the tip of his sharp hook to make her look up at him, as she shook her head in fear. “Then tell me why you have come!”
Inside the closet Peter moved to look through the key hole trying to see if the coast was clear. Caitlin just watched him for a few moments, not sure who he was or what was going on. “What is your name?” She asked, at least wanting to know who had invaded her changing room.
“Peter.” Turning and looking at her a moment, “Peter Pan.” Instantly turning back to look through the keyhole again, to make sure the coast was clear.
She sighed looking at him, “My names Caitlin . . . . .Cat I suppose you can call me, everyone else does.” The boy stood up looking at her, putting his hand on the door handle grinning from ear to ear. Without saying a word he slipped out of the room, and headed for the double doors. Finding the latch and opening them, standing in the middle. Turning back into the cabin he put his two little fingers at the corner of his mouth, whistling loud. Hooks attentions where grabbed as he turned to see what it was, Tinker bell flew up before his eyes, making a rude gesture before flying out the door with the boy.
Hook chased after them, only to get out of the Cabin just in time to see them disappear into the night sky. Shouting down onto the deck where only one was on watch. His eyes narrowed as he looked about the deck, no one said a word and there wasn’t an ounce of commotion anywhere. Stepping back inside he turned closing the doors behind him, and inspecting the lock. It’d not been broken from the outside, it had to have been released from the inside. “That. . . little. . .” It only took the crafty Captain a moment to remember that the small fairy had attacked his bride and flew out of the closet, drawing him away from the door.
“Caitlin!” He called walking for her closet door that was still open. He pulled It open the rest of the way, walking in as he spoke. “Caitlin . . . .there was a boy in here, was there not, that just escap. . . . .” He stopped looking at her. Something was wrong. She stood in front of her mirror staring at herself, her eyes slightly wide as if her mind was frozen solid unable to think or recall anything. He stepped forward looking at her, “Caitlin are you alright?” He questioned, reaching up and touching her shoulder. Her eyes turned and looked at him, narrowing slightly trying to remember something, anything before three days ago.
“James. . . .when did I . . . . .when was I brought aboard.” He looked at her for a moment. This was a strange line of questioning he had to admit.
“You came aboard three days ago. I brought you here with me from your home. Don’t you remember?” The look in her eyes told him that she did not remember, but there was a look of trying to recall.
She swallowed feeling as if she was falling, with nothing to grasp a hold of to stop her. “Why am I here?” She whispered looking back into the mirror. In the dress she wore, she couldn’t even remember herself. The Captain starred at her in silence. Neverland. Neverland wanted to keep her hear as well, as it worked it’s magic and cast its spell upon her.
Slowly he walked up behind her, not being able to help but feel a deep sense of pity for what he’d just witnessed. It was something that had been working on her since last night, and she only noticed it now or tried to remember just a few moments before. Something had sparked her memory enough that she questioned and tried to look back on the past. Standing behind her and looking at her image in the mirror he whispered, “You are my bride. You have come to share my life with me.” His eyes shifted from her image in the glass to her as he attempted to gauge her reactions.
He could see the fear there, he could feel it when her body shivered as if a ghost had just passed by her brushing skin in the darkness. He spoke to her gently, “You must trust me Caitlin. I am your husband, and I wish no ill or misfortune on my wife.” Caitlin’s mind was in a whirl, she knew she’d been fighting him the past few days. The wedding, dodging away from him constantly, trying to get away and wanting to be released. But get away to where? And for what purpose?
“Caitlin, . . . you are safe here. There’s nothing to be afraid of. Those things that you find yourself being unable to recall, don’t matter anymore. There is no one in your past waiting for you. You were alone . . . . just as I have been.” Reaching up with his good hand, he gently turned her away from the mirror to look at him. “We have no need to be alone any longer. Now we have each other.” He was a bit nervous speaking to her, feeling as if a huge opportunity had just presented itself and wanting to be as careful with the fragile thing as he could be.
“Where we engaged before I was brought here?” She questioned looking into his eyes. It was still possible that she’d been part of an arranged marriage, but she couldn’t recall if she was or not. It would explain her resisting so much, and not remembering having seen him before as well as her not feeling the way a proper wife should.
Hook looked into her eyes for several moments, before answering. Making a decision, and knowing that Neverland would be the key to unlocking the treasure he’d brought back with him, “Yes . . . .we were betrothed for sometime before I fetched you to take your place by my side.” It wasn’t very hard for Caitlin’s parents to be forgotten. They died when she was still very young, and she’d forgotten mostly about them before she was taken from the real world, only keeping one picture of them in her journal. She was a history major, and it was easy for old marriage practices to seem as current and up to date to her mind.
“Then . . . our marriage was my father’s wish then.” She said thinking that she was putting everything together now, and it all made sense this way. So it must have been just as she thought. Hook looked deep into her eyes, he told himself that she could never be happy back in the real world. She had no family, and once her schooling was complete her funding for her life her parents left her would have run out. She would have had to work or marry well anyway.
“Yes, it was. I wanted to marry you so much, that I paid your dowry. Your father agreed and we’ve been engaged for some time.” Normally he could look into a person’s eye and swear his word, and find a way around it later. He felt like a genuine cad at the moment, asking her to trust him with the same words he used to mold her into accepting their marriage. Perhaps speeding her way into accepting him.
“Why wasn’t this all explained to be before?” She whispered, knowing it hadn’t been mentioned before now. Her mind wondered over the past three days, she’d been told over and over that she’d been chosen out of all the woman he’d seen. He brought her back because he wanted her for his wife. But never had he said that they were betrothed. Still he gave her a choice before he took it away to marry him or not it seemed.
He had to think quickly on this one, and reached up brushing a few locks of her hair back from her face. As she still looked a frightful mess from her small attacker. “Your fathers passing came before he could explain it to you, otherwise he would have been here himself to give you away.” He whispered looking into her eyes still. She grew silent for a few moments, turning and looking into the mirror at herself once more processing everything she’d just been told.
The clever Captain grew nervous, and gently pulled her away from the mirror reaching for a nightgown that had been brought for her laying it on the table. “You have had a very long day my dear, you need your rest. Let me help you unlace your gown then you may get out of that dress and into your night clothing.” He said not wanting to give her a chance to think about everything. Sitting her down in the chair before the table, he reached behind her and started to unlace the white bodice, using his hook to push her forward for a moment so he could reach better.
He stopped suddenly feeling his breath catch in his throat. Just an inch of her skin having been revealed, but it was more then enough to awake a desire inside that had been put away and buried for quiet sometime. Starting to reach for the laces again, his hands started to shake wanting very much to see every inch of the beautiful woman that now shared his name. He turned his eyes away, pulling his hands back before moving to the door keeping his eyes averted. “Your dress is loose now, I think you can managed the rest yourself.” He said quickly leaving the small changing room and closing the door behind.
Taking long deep breaths he leaned against the door, trying to calm the fire that only an inch of her hidden body being revealed seem to set ablaze. Closing his eyes a moment leaning his head back against the wall, swallowing the lump in his throat and feeling his mouth had become very dry. His intentions had changed rapidly over the course of the evening. When he’d first come into his Cabin, he’d intended to woo her into his arms hoping that their marriage would be the incentive she needed. But that was shot down in a matter of moments. His next intention when he made his discovery about the effects of Neverland having touched her as well was to wait until he was certain her memories had fled. Now, his intentions had changed again. There were many things that were apart of his being that would always be there no matter what the circumstance. Jealousy, Greed, Anger, Hate, Malice. There was another hiding away, festering and growing silently over the long years, which had no need to surface as women where scarce. Lust had always been there, but had not governed his thoughts nor actions. . . . until this very moment.
He called out to her through the door, “Do not be long Caitlin, I wait for you.” He said quickly, taking another deep breath before moving away from the door.
