Chapter 9

The next morning all of the kids rose early and planned to go with Esme to the school to get registered. Alice decorated her hair into tiny spikes all over her head. If her hair had to be this length, she’d do it her way. Carlisle had called the hospital the day before and sent them his resume. He had already been hired. Happily. The town of Forks was thrilled to have such a skilled doctor working in their tiny town. He nodded to each of his children and pulled Alice off to the side before leaving for work.
“You are my daughter now. Don’t think otherwise. My children come first to both Esme and myself. If you need anything at all do not hesitate to ask. We will protect and love you.”
“I know Carlisle. I know and I thank you for it.” Alice’s eyes danced with excitement.
“The others will watch out for you here but I’m sure I don’t have to ask you to keep our family secret.”
“I would never betray this family. You have saved me.”
“Good. Have a good day and I’ll see you tonight.”
The school secretary seemed bowled over by these beautiful children. She handed them each their schedules. Alice had one class with Jasper and two with Edward. The others she was on her own. They were each given a map and they compared their schedules. At least this school only had one lunch period so they would all be able to eat together.
Emmett, Rosalie and Edward went off to find their lockers and to head on to their first class. Jasper pulled Alice into a corner. “Are you alright?” He asked concerned about the nervousness he was feeling from her.
“I’m fine.” Alice reassured him. “I guess you guys are used to this huh?”
“Yeah, a little.” Jasper added sheepishly.
“I haven’t been to school in a long time. Mother didn’t want anyone to see me have a vision. What if I can’t keep up?” Alice looked up at him with fear in her eyes.
“We usually know more than the teachers having been through this so many times. We will help you out. We will all make sure you are ok.” He said pulling her into his arms and hugging her gently. He felt her nod against his chest. “Be careful, okay. I’ll see you at lunch.” He kissed her quickly and moved on down the hallway. Alice felt like there had been something else he intended to say but hadn’t for whatever reason. She shrugged and headed off for her first class of the day and one of the ones she had with Edward.
The teacher made them stand to introduce themselves. Edward went first. “Hi, my name is Edward Cullen my family moved here from Alaska. My brother Emmett and my sister Alice, me and our two foster siblings, Jasper and Rosalie Hale live with our adopted parents and we thank you for welcoming us. I love music and reading. That’s about it.” He said sitting back down. He subtly winked at Alice and she hid a smile.
“Alice?” The teacher asked calling her to the front. Alice slowly got up and gracefully moved to the front.
“Umm…hi!” She said softly. “I’m Mary Alice Br...Cullen;” She stumbled slightly over the name. “but I go by Alice. Edward gave you the family thing. I’m uh, I’m into art, photography, decorating and reading. Although Rosalie drags me out shopping a lot too, not that I mind. Fashion is kinda my thing.” She improvised with a grin. She saw Edward’s smile. It made it sound like she had been with the family much longer than she had. She headed back to her seat.
“Perfect.” Edward whispered to her.
“Thanks.” She responded cheerfully.
“By the way, Jasper can’t stop thinking about you. He’s wondering if I’ll help tutor you if you need it. I will.” He said. She smiled again and began to take notes as the lesson started.
Alice could feel all the eyes of everyone watching them. She wondered a little what they were thinking. She slightly envied her brother for his ability to know. “They are all just wondering about the family. The girls are eyeing me and the guys are all checking you out. The sooner Jasper stakes his claim, the better. He’s a little territorial about you.” Edward whispered.
Alice laughed which quickly turned to a cough when everyone turned to look at her. She held her throat and looked apologetically at the teacher. She coughed a couple more times then stopped. “I’m so sorry Mr. Varner. I just choked. I’m ok now.” Her little bell voice said. ‘Did he buy it?’ she questioned Edward in her head. He nodded slightly and the class continued.
