A/N: It was pointed out to me that Edward is out of character. I want to apologize for not realizing that, but Edward needs to be the way I've written him for now. So, in other words, OOC Edward. Everyone else should be fairly canon. 'Cept Whitaker, 'cause he's mine. :)
And this story does have a reason to be on here. I just haven't gotten to that yet. :)
Over the rest of the week, Jasper brought my homework and kept me company every afternoon. Gramps didn’t seem to mind. He even offered to let Jasper stay for supper, but Jasper always politely declined. He would have stayed with me during the day, but both Gramps and I told him he needed to go to school. He finally relented, but he wasn’t happy about it.
Edward and Bella came by one day during that week before Jasper.
“Carlisle wanted me to check on you,” Edward said. “If it’s all right, he wants to come by tomorrow.”
“It would be fine,” Gramps said as he made his way past us to the porch. “Maybe he can get Whitaker to rest. I sure can’t.” Edward smirked.
“I don’t know about Carlisle, but Jasper may get him to rest,” he joked. My face heated up in embarrassment while my grandfather burst into laughter.
Childishly, I stuck my tongue out at both of them and stalked back to my room. Bella followed me.
“You know they’re kidding, right?” she asked.
“Yes, I know. Gramps is always like that. I didn’t think Edward was as well. Now I’ve got two to deal with…”
“Just wait until you meet Emmett. Edward doesn’t normally joke, but Emmett’s rubbed off on him.”
“Who’s Emmett?”
“He’s one of Carlisle’s kids.”
“Oh. Okay. I guess I’ll meet him someday.”
She nodded.
Edward walked into my room, then.
“I’m sorry, Whitaker. I didn’t mean to upset you. I couldn’t resist,” he apologized.
“I know. I’m fine. It just surprised me. I’m used to Gramps’ sense of humor, but you were a surprise.” I paused. “Is Jasper coming by?”
He smiled. “He’ll be by soon. Very soon.” I heard the door open; Jasper walked in with some books in his arms. He grinned sheepishly when he saw the three of us.
“Your grandfather said I could come on back,” Jasper stated.
“It’s fine. I don’t mind,” I smiled. Edward and Bella exchanged a knowing glance that I didn’t miss. I stuck my tongue out at them again. Jasper appeared confused.
“Am I missing something?” Jasper asked.
“Actually…Whitaker’s grandfather said Whitaker hasn’t been resting like he should. We thought you could help with that,” Edward kidded. Bella laughed while I blushed and Jasper stared, mouth agape.
“Did you just…insinuate…” He seemed to be tongue-tied.
“I insinuate nothing except that Whitaker might listen to you.”
I sat on my bed, pulled my knees to my chest, and hid my face against them. “I’m not listening to anybody!” I proclaimed, though it came out muffled. I heard the door close, so I risked an upward glance. Jasper was glaring at the door. “Did they leave?” I murmured.
“Yeah,” he replied. “They said bye and they’ll see you later.” I nodded and laid back on my bed. I heard a strangled sound; I looked up in surprise.
“What is it? Are you all right?” He nodded, but wouldn’t turn back to look at me. “What did I do?”
“You didn’t do anything. At least…not intentionally.”
“Okay. Unintentionally…what did I do?”
He finally turned around. “No, Whitaker, you have the wrong idea…”
“Tell me what it is so I have the right idea.”
He sighed. I went to hug him for comfort, but he stepped back. My face fell, but I tried to hide it. He saw through my façade.
“I’m sorry.” He placed his arm across my shoulders. I shrugged out from under it, but he caught my hand before I could move away. He pulled me into a gentle hug. “I’m sorry, it’s just…I don’t know how to react in this type of situation.”
“Wha—” Then I felt it; something was pressing against my hip. The blood rushed to my face once again. “Oh.” I felt my own body responding in kind, and I blushed deeper. I buried my face in his neck. “I think I have the same problem.” He chuckled and pulled back.
“You need to rest.” His smile was strained again. “And I need to go. I set your work on the desk.”
“Thanks.” I’m scaring him off…
“Don’t worry. I’ll be back tomorrow.” He seemed to have something else to say.
“Is there something else?” He shuffled his feet.
“…Would you…like to…I don’t know…maybe…to go out with me Saturday?” I gaped at him. “If you don’t want to…” I practically tackled him in a hug, even though it hurt…and he didn’t move. It felt like hitting a wall.
“Of course! I would love to!” I exclaimed anyway.
“You’re going to hurt yourself worse if you keep doing that. I pulled back and we both smiled. “I’ll be around after lunch. Sound good?” I nodded. “I have to go. You. Bed. Now.” My eyes widened and he covered his face. “I didn’t mean that how it sounded.”
Astonishing myself, I said, “I liked how it sounded.” I gulped at the fire I saw in his eyes. He licked his lips.
“…I have to go…before I do something irrational.” He lifted his hand in farewell and was gone.
A bit of awkwardness... :) Review and let me know your opinions, please.
Gaps of Misery--I think Whitaker would appreciate those painkillers! I couldn't resist a bit of stubbornness. ;)
