When Charlie came down in the morning Alice was pretending to sleep in the recliner. As soon as he reached the bottom step she stretched and opened her eyes. “Good morning,” she smiled brightly.
“Morning. I didn’t wake you, did I?”
“Yes, but it’s time to get up, anyway.”
“Where’s Liam?”
“He went up to Bella’s room and left us girls down here.”
As if on cue Liam came down the stairs, wearing only a pair of khakis. His hair was tied back so the Celtic knot tattoo down his spine and the intricately done shape of a wolf on his shoulder were visible. The black ink contrasted sharply with his pale skin. “Morning, Chief Swan.”
“Please, call me Charlie. Nice tattoos you got there.”
“Thanks, they’re Celtic. I got them when I was fourteen.”
“Your parents let you get tattoos?”
“No, they were dead,” Liam said in a casual tone. “I had a friend do these for me.”
“I’m sorry,” Charlie mumbled as he moved to start breakfast.
“Don’t be. I never knew my mother, and I never lamented being rid of my father. Here, let me get breakfast,” Liam said as he went over to look in the fridge.
“I appreciate all the help, but you two are guests,” Charlie argued.
Liam flashed him a charming smile. “My brother raised me well. Really, don’t worry about it.”
Charlie gave up and sat at the table. When Liam leaned over in front of the fridge the light hit him in a way that illuminated several thin scars on his back as well. “Did your father do that?” Charlie asked.
Liam tensed a little at the question, knowing what he was referring to. “Yes,” he answered with his jaw clenched. He pulled out a carton of eggs and a few other things and set them on the counter.
“I don’t mean to pry, but if you want to talk about it….”
“It was a long time ago. The bastard got what was coming to him, so there’s really not much to talk about.”
“Got what was coming to him? What happened to him?”
Liam kept his eyes on the counter while he chopped up the omelet ingredients. “He died in a boating accident when I was thirteen. He went fishing alone and I guess the boat capsized on him and he drowned.”
Charlie’s instincts told him Liam wasn’t telling the whole truth, but he didn’t pry any further. The scars on Liam’s back were proof that whatever had really happened, the bastard probably had deserved it if he’d done that to his own child.
“So, how has Bella been?” Alice adroitly changed the subject.
“When your family left it was pretty bad,” Charlie frowned. “She was like a zombie: walking around and everything, but dead inside. She stayed that way until I told her I was going to send her to live with her mother again. I thought it would be good for her, and I certainly didn’t know how to help her. She went ballistic on me though. After that she started to pretend everything was okay, but it obviously wasn’t. It wasn’t until she befriended Jacob that she started turning back to normal.”
Charlie went quiet when Bella stirred. Liam knew she’d been awake for most of the conversation. He was setting out the omelets on the table when she joined them. “That smells really good,” she commented.
“Aren’t you two going to eat?” Charlie asked Liam and Alice. He’d always found it odd that the Cullens never ate.
“I munched while I cooked,” Liam gave as an excuse.
“I’ll have some a little later,” Alice politely declined.
Charlie and Bella ate quickly, then Charlie went to go get ready for the funeral. After he left it was just Bella and her guests. She didn’t know what else to do, so she decided to catch up on cleaning while catching up with Alice.
Liam, being his ever-helpful self, even helped with the cleaning. Alice pitched in some too, until an hour later when she wrinkled her nose. “Bella, I think I need to leave for a moment.”
“Why?” Bella asked, afraid she’d done something wrong.
The question was answered by the sound of a car pulling into the driveway. Bella headed out to see who it was while Alice slipped out her bedroom window. She was pleased to see Jacob getting out and coming toward her. “Bella, I wanted to talk to you,” he said stiffly. “Could we go inside for a moment?”
“Of course,” Bella answered, leading him inside. Liam was casually leaning against the wall at the bottom of the stairs. “Aren’t you leaving with Alice?”
“No, I’m not going to be chased off,” Liam snorted. “Besides, he won’t hurt me.”
“How can you be so sure?” Jacob growled.
Liam chuckled. “The look on your face tells me we both know the answer to that. Never mind me, just do what you came to do.”
Jacob cursed under his breath and turned to Bella. “I just wanted to let you know that with your friend here we can’t watch over you. I can’t be with you.”
“Why not?” Bella asked, the hurt evident in her tone. “It’s just Alice. Everything was fine with Liam here; why is it different now?”
“You’re his charge,” Jacob answered, not wanting to say the name. “The other being here changes things.”
“It doesn’t have to be different,” Bella whimpered.
“Yes, it does,” Jacob argued. He obviously didn’t like seeing her this upset.
“No, it doesn’t,” Liam interrupted. “I understand why you think it does, but we have a treaty, we’re different. You are welcome in our territory as long as you don’t attack us. Times have changed; maybe you should, too.”
“You don’t know anything!” Jacob snapped. Every second he was in Liam’s presence was agony. He didn’t want to hurt Liam; quite the opposite, in fact. His insides screamed at him to kiss the bloodsucker and surrender to his dreams.
“I—“ Liam started to respond, but he suddenly doubled over and whimpered. Jacob rushed forward to grab him, but the moment he realized what he’d done he jumped back as if he’d been burned.
“Liam!” Alice’s voice came from the top of the stairs.
“It’s already happening,” Liam said through clenched teeth. Suddenly the phone rang. “That will be Carlisle.”
Alice picked up the phone and had a very short conversation with her adopted father. “What’s going on?” Bella asked, suddenly worried.
“Edward,” Liam answered. “He thinks you’re dead.”
It took Bella only a few seconds to realize why that was a bad thing. Before he left, Edward had told her he planned to kill himself if anything ever happened to her. “How could he?”
“Rosalie told him what I saw,” Alice explained. “I should never have said anything to her.”
“No, you shouldn’t,” Liam growled. “Remind me to kill that bitch later. Right now, we need to get to Italy.” He turned to Jacob. “We need you to tell Charlie that Edward called and invited Bella to join him in Italy. I’m sure he’ll understand her dropping everything to go.”
“Why should I do anything for you?”
Liam took a step closer. “First of all, it’s not for me, it’s for Charlie. Second, as much you hate me for no good damned reason, I’m betting you still won’t want to break your promise.”
Jacob didn’t know what promise Liam was talking about, but something deep inside him seemed to understand. Still, he didn’t want Bella to leave. “Don’t go—it’s too dangerous.”
Liam took Jacob’s hand, and he didn’t pull away this time. “I’ve dealt with these idiots before. I won’t let anything happen to her, I promise.”
Jacob let out a deep sigh and nodded. “Fine,” he growled. Something was happening between Liam and Jacob, but Bella was too worried about Edward to care at that moment. Whatever it was, promises seemed to mean a lot to both of them.
The next few minutes were a flurry of chaos. Liam and Alice hurriedly gathered their things, though it didn’t take them long. “You’ll need your ID and a passport,” Alice reminded Bella while she helped her pack. Bella nodded and made sure she had both in her purse, checking several times to make sure they were there.
Jacob was still waiting when they came down with their bags packed. He was pacing back and forth as if he was dealing with some inner conflict. “Please take care of Charlie,” Bella said as she hugged him tight for a second.
“Of course,” Jacob responded as he hugged her back, reluctant to let go.
Liam paused in front of Jacob for a second after he closed the front door behind him. “If only I had more time,” he frowned before turning away and racing to hop in the Mercedes. The second the door was closed Alice slammed on the gas and they were off.
“We’re going to be able to save him, aren’t we?” Bella asked her companions from the back seat.
“I don’t know,” Alice answered truthfully. “But we have to try.”
They spent the short ride to the airport talking more about the Volturi. Bella didn’t know much about them, and the more Liam told her the more worried she became. “But you killed one of them, didn’t you? At least that’s what Edward told me.”
Liam nodded. “Yes, I did, but Rudolfo wasn’t all that special. He could look into Carlisle’s mind and learn more about me, but he apparently didn’t pay very close attention. If he had, he would have known better. Our best chance is to catch Edward before he does anything rash.”
They made it to the airport just in time to catch the next flight to New York. From there they would fly to Rome. They boarded the plane, and although it only took about half an hour for the plane to finally take off, it seemed like a lot longer.
Liam was rocking back and forth in his seat. “What’s wrong?” Bella asked.
“Carlisle is upset,” Liam answered. “I can feel it. By the way, he’s convinced the others not to come, but he’s going to meet us in Rome.”
Alice’s eyes widened. “No, he can’t! If anything happens to him….”
“We want him with us,” Liam assured her. “Even if we don’t save Edward, we’ll be okay.”
Bella couldn’t imagine not saving Edward and wasn’t sure she wanted to be okay if she lost him. This was all her fault. If she hadn’t been so stupid none of this would be happening. She didn’t know why Liam and Alice weren’t angry with her.
She tried to relax and not think about it too much. Liam continued his silent conversation with Carlisle and Alice sat still as a statue, trying to get another vision. She seemed a little more relaxed when they landed. “He asked, and they said no,” she smiled. “They want him to join them.”
The more time they had the better. They had to run to catch their next flight. Liam even picked up Bella and ran with her a few times as they weaved through the crowd. Bella was exhausted by the time they boarded the plane, so she relaxed in her seat and fell asleep.
