Kiandra slipped back into the room as the king left. I stayed in the tub, letting the steaming water soothe the pain of the recent abuse. My mind went blank and I just stared at the surface of the water, watching it swirl when I shifted. Kiandra busied herself with menial tasks, keeping herself busy while she waited for me to finish my bath. When she reached for the pile of rumpled bedclothes laying on the floor, I winced; I hoped she wouldn't find evidence of my humiliation. She hesitated for the briefest moment before continuing her chores but in that second, I knew.
She walked to the door with the pile of blankets in her arms and tapped the wood with her foot. One of the soldiers standing guard opened it and peeked inside, reddening when he noticed me sitting in the tub. He quickly withdrew his head and pushed in a passing servant. Kiandra gave the confused woman orders to take my soiled bedclothes and have them laundered and to send up new ones in the meantime. The servant left, opening the door wider to accomodate her load. I caught sight of the blushing guard as he held the door open for the woman. He glanced inside again and his face went redder. I couldn't help but giggle.
Kiandra smiled at the sound, but had to force herself to hold it in place as she turned to me.
"Have you finished your bath, Lady? Perhaps you would like to go for a walk today. We could continue your lessons in the garden this morning."
"That sounds wonderful, Kiandra, thank you." I stood up from the bath and she rushed over to help me step out of the tub. Grabbing a towel, she started gently rubbing my limbs to dry them off. When she reached my bruised wrists she slowed, barely touching me. I knew I had bruises elsewhere; I could still feel Galbatorix's fingers digging into my hips. Kiandra carefully folded the towel and pulled a dress from the large wardrobe. It was a simple purple gown with wide, flowing sleeves, a cinched waist and a square neckline. When Kiandra dropped the dress over my head and I slipped my arms in the sleeves I realized her choice was strategic as well as fashionable. The sleeves were long enough to hide the bruising on my wrists.
Kiandra brushed my hair for me again, this time leaving it down so it trailed down my back in long golden waves. She put the brush down and went back to the wardrobe, opening up the smaller set of doors that held jewelry. Making her selection, she came back over to where I was seated. She came around to stand in front of me and settled the simple circlet on my hair. It had three strands weaving through it, much how my mother used to braid her hair. In the center of the circlet were three purple stones, spaced a little apart so you could see more of the woven design between them. She smiled at me.
"You know. I know you do," I whispered gently. Her smile faltered, then faded. She sighed and sat in front of me.
"I was hoping it was not true, that maybe my imagination was running wild. But the way you reacted when he asked me to leave, and the look you had when he left..." Her voice trailed away and she looked sad.
"He postponed the ceremony again." I didn't know why I was telling her this, but I felt I needed to. "He said I had lost my memory and he wanted to get it back. I don't know what he is talking about." My breath quickened and my voice started to rise. The door burst open and the soldiers guarding my door rushed in with swords drawn. They stopped short and looked around. The one I had noticed earlier blushed slightly and cleared his throat.
"Sorry, My Lady, we heard you shouting and thought you were in trouble." He shifted uncomfortably and they both sheathed their swords. I eyed the young one curiously. He had sandy brown hair and green eyes. He was also rather tall, with broad shoulders. He wore chainmail, so I couldn't tell much else, but I could see that his mail was very well filled out, and the arms coming out of the sleeves of the mail were very muscular. Kiandra cleared her throat rather loudly and stood up.
"Well, as you can see, the lady is fine. Thank you for your concern." She shooed the men out the door and closed it behind them. Then she giggled.
I looked up at her in surprise. "Kiandra, what is so funny?"
"Your reaction to the young man."
I felt myself blush. "I have no idea what you are talking about."
"Oh, yes you do. If you would finish getting yourself ready for our walk, I must go see the king. Don't worry," she added when I jumped up. "I just need to let him know our plans for the day so if he comes... looking for you again, he will not be alarmed to find your room empty." She slipped out of the room, leaving me alone.
I puzzled over what she said about my reaction to the young soldier. It confused me. I had been raped not even an hour before, my body violated. Yet here I was, fascinated by another man. Shaking my head to dispel the strange thoughts, I slipped my feet into soft shoes that perfectly matched the color of the gown. Almost immediately the door opened and Kiandra came in. Her face was glowing and she had a mischievous glint in her eye.
"Come!" She clapped her hands once and ushered me out the door. "You too," she added as she scooted me past the young guard. He looked confused but followed. I glanced at her sideways, hoping to gain some insight of what she was planning but nothing came to me. When we got a good distance away from my chambers she slowed her pace and took her hand from my back so I was walking with her rather than being guided.
"Um, Kiandra?" I flicked my eyes over my shoulder to look at the soldier, who was walking a respectful distance behind us, but close enough for it to be obvious that he was with us. Kiandra giggled again, but she shook her head. Hearing that young, carefree sound come from such a matronly old woman made me smile and shake my head. Then we were outside in the garden. The moment the sun hit my face, I felt the tension melt away. I stopped and just stood there, the slight breeze ruffling the hem of my dress and lifting the ends of my hair. Kiandra gently took my arm and guided me to a bench under a tree and we sat, the soldier standing a short distance away. I kicked off my shoes and put my bare feet in the grass, reveling in the feel of the cool blades gently poking me.
People paused in their tasks to look over at us. Many of them bent their heads together to whisper. I felt my cheeks redden and Kiandra patted my hand. "They are just talking about the king's bride. No one knows anything about you." I nodded and tried to focus on what she was telling me. For a while she talked about the city and what little she knew about how it was ran. Soon enough the people lost interest and wandered away. When everyone was a good distance from us she straightened up and beckoned to the soldier. He came over quickly, obviously thinking something was wrong. He dropped down in front of me and searched my face.
"Is everything okay?" His eyes flicked between Kiandra and me. I flushed slightly and lifted my hand to brush a stray lock of hair out of my face. Too late I remembered the bruises. The soldier grabbed my hand and flipped the ends of the sleeves up, exposing the purple spots. I snatched my hand away and slid my sleeves back down, looking at the bench.
"Everything is fine, Jack," Kiandra soothed, putting an arm protectively around my shoulders. "Lady Artemis, this is Jack Laedronsson. He will be your personal guard, appointed by the king this morning. It seems he fears for your safety. Apparently there have been rumors flying around the barracks about one of the soldiers who escorted you and your villagers to Uru'Baen, and some trouble that he got into along the way here. The king became convinced that some of the other men would try to gain entry into your rooms. He needed someone he could trust to protect you. He wanted it to be Durza, but I suggested he consider Jack seeing as how he always has that thing running errands, not to mention he is downright creepy, and the king thought it was a great idea. So Jack is now your constant companion. Besides me, of course." She looked rather smug. I could only look at her in astonishment.
"If that is the case," Jack started slowly. "If I am to be your personal guard, my lady, then I will need to understand what I am going to be dealing with." He grabbed my arm again and slid the sleeve up to reveal the ugly purple splotches. "I need to know what happened."
Once again I pulled my arm away. "I don't want to talk about it." Jack looked at me for a long moment, but finally nodded and stood.
"I hope one day you will trust me enough to be able to talk to me." He turned abruptly and resumed his watch next to the tree.
Kiandra watched him go, a sad expression on her face. "I really was hoping you two would get along a little better than that. Seeing as how you two will be spending every waking minute together now."
"Unless the king asks him to leave," I muttered. Kiandra patted my knee.
"Nonsense, darling. Do you realize how big of a scandal that would cause? King Galbatorix would never allow that." Hope burgeoned in my chest, warming my entire body.
Suddenly the day seemed even more beautiful. The thought that Kiandra may have found a way to keep the king from slinking into my bedchambers every night gave me hope. Maybe this was just what I needed to help me continue my plans for my escape. Galbatorix himself pushed the ceremony back while he looked into my memory loss. That would be my chance! While he was occupied with trying to break whatever spell he thought was on me, I would make my escape. I eyed Jack thoughtfully. I would either have to convince him to let me go, knock him out somehow and run away, or... take him with me. Somehow, I wasn't sure if that would be a good idea or not.
Kiandra and I continued talking about everything and nothing, just sitting on the bench. At lunch time, Rayna, one of the women from my old village, brought a basket full of food for us. We sat on the bench, Kiandra, Jack and I, munching and talking as the sun started to set. Jack approached with a slight bow. "Time to go back inside, My Lady. It is getting late."
Reluctantly, I stood and slid my feet back into my shoes. We crossed the small garden and went back into the stone halls. Kiandra led me back to my room and bid me good night. Jack did the same as he held the door open for me. I thanked him and walked past, brushing very close to him as I entered my room. When he shut the door behind me, I relaxed a little. A fire was crackling in the fireplace on the far wall, giving the room a warm glow. I crossed to the bed, pulling off the dress as I went. The blankets had been replaced and a new nightgown lay next to the pillows. I donned the nightgown and crossed to the small table that held a mirror and brush along with tiny bottles that held different perfumes. Taking the circlet from my head, I sat and began brushing my hair. As I pulled the bristles through my hair, I started to hatch my plan. I would have to wait until I knew the king was immersed in one of his research sessions until I could make my move. And I would definitely have to learn more about that odd man with the red hair.
I had just finished braiding my hair and was preparing to stand up when I heard him come in. The door barely made a sound, but I had always had excellent hearing. He came up behind me and stroked his hands up my arms. I fought very hard not to pull away from him; I knew it would only make what was coming worse.
"You are beautiful as always, Artemis." Galbatorix bent to nuzzle the side of my neck leaving kisses from my ear down to my shoulder. Suddenly, his hands convulsed on my arms and he picked me up. I cried out in surprise at the sudden motion. He carried me across the room and pulled back the blankets before depositing me gently on the bed. He quickly disrobed and climbed into the bed with me. I tried scooting away but he grabbed me and held me fast.
"Our coming together so far has been fast, rushed. I want to take it slowly tonight. I know you don't remember me yet, but perhaps if I remind your body, your mind will follow." Fear rushed through me at his words; I was hoping he would have his way with me and then leave like he had been doing. His hands traced up and down my body while he trailed kisses across my face and neck. I lay there unmoving, wishing he would finish and leave me. His hands found the apex of my thighs and gently stroked the curls there before delving deeper. I clenched my thighs tighter, but he overpowered me once more and pulled my legs apart. He continued his exploration of my folds while I lay beside him fighting tears. His fingers found the sensitive nub and my legs jerked as I gasped. He grinned.
"My Lord," I stammered as he pressed harder onto the nub. "I don't want to spoil your mood, but if we continue coming together like this before our wedding night, it will take away from how special that night should be. It will be like just another joining for us." I lay still, waiting. It was my last hope, and if he didn't go for this, I was lost.
He laughed and my heart sank. "I assure you, my love. That night will be no less special. That is the night your curse will be lifted, and when you have all of your memories back, it will be like the first time for us all over again." He settled himself between my legs and I braced for the intrusion but instead he began kissing down my neck to my chest. He took the peak of one breast in his mouth while kneading the other mound with his hand. Galbatorix rolled the nipple in his mouth, nipping lightly with his teeth before turning his attention to the other breast. I found myself gasping for breath, holding on to his shoulders. There was an uncomfortable tightness in my abdomen. He moved lower, trailing his tongue down the flat plains of my belly as he went. His hands found the juncture of my legs again, and one finger was stroking my entrance while another probed the tiny bundle of nerves. I was horrified to hear myself making small noises, and wanted to die when I cried out as his tongue found my opening. Galbatorix laughed again, obviously pleased with my reactions. His tongue stroked the sensitive flesh, eliciting more unwilling moans. He lapped at my opening for a moment, making small noises himself, before thrusting his tongue inside my body. He alternated licking and swirling his tongue before moving back up once more to concentrate on the sensitive nub he had found earlier. His fingers continued probing my body, moving in and out. A heavy warmth started to build between my thighs as he flicked his fingers inside me and pressed his tongue against my body. Suddenly, the liquid heat I felt building up inside me burst and I cried out in pleasure, my walls clenched around Galbatorix's fingers as wave after wave of pleasure washed over me.
Horror replaced pleasure as I came back to myself. My fingers were entwined in Galbatorix's hair, and he was moving back up my body, the tip of his member pressing where his fingers had just left. My body had betrayed me. I realized with mounting disgust that I had been raped again, and this time I had enjoyed it. When the full force of the revelation hit me, I shut down. I withdrew from myself. I never felt it when Galbatorix took me again, when he thrust his body roughly into mine, or even when he bit down on my neck, marking me. And when he finished, when he emptied his seed into my womb then got up and got dressed, I never moved. But when he leaned over to whisper into my ear, I cried. I knew now, there was no chance of me escaping this life. His words replayed in my head over and over again as I wept. Even after he left the room and I was alone.
"Remember, Artemis. You are mine."

A/N: Yes, I realize it has been forever since I last updated this story. If you are still reading this, thank you for your loyalty and for continuing to check up on me. If you are a new reader, welcome! I hope you enjoy, please leave me a review to tell me how I am doing!
A few things: First, I have had horrible writers block for months, and finally (while listening to music, go figure lol) inspiration hit. I cannot even begin to tell you how many times in the last few months that I have pulled up AFF and tried to add a chapter, only to come up blank. I guess I really needed my iPod lol.
Second: (Bear with me) I realized halfway through this chapter that I suddenly have no idea where I am going with this. I had a clear outline of what I was following, and suddenly it's gone. I guess this latest muse has different ideas. I may end up circling back to my original outline, but as of right now, I am not sure but I'm rather excited to see where this takes me :)
I am going to try very hard to update more often. I have found inspiration hitting at work only to lose the idea as soon as I get home and get my computer booted up, so I am going to be carrying around a notebook from now on, so hopefully I can get more chapters up more often.
Thanks for reading!
