“I’m coming with you. She’s my friend too.” Stanley said.
“Heck of a time for him to find his courage.” Remo whispered to Chuin.
“Stanley, this will be dangerous. You will be safer here.” Kai explained.
“I may not be decarbonized and I may not be a Master of Sinanju, but I am Xev’s friend. I watched her die twice. I’m not giving up on her Kai.” Stan said defiantly.
“I will not be able to protect you and save her at the same time if it comes to that.” Kai said with uncharacteristic impatience.
“I’ll take care of myself.” Stan said.
“I’ll keep an eye on him.” Ruby said as she approached tucking a 9mm into a holster.
“You’re a secretary!” Stanley said.
“Actually Ruby is a former FBI agent now assigned to CURE. Although she uses a gun she can take care of herself. She’s handy in a fight.” Remo said.
“Smitty thought I should tag along. Although I have a feeling Xev Bellringer can take care of herself too. That robot head is a wealth of information when you know which buttons to push. Stanley can fill me in on cluster lizards on the way.”
“Cluster lizards?” Remo questioned.
“Xev is part cluster lizard.” Stanley said. “And sometimes when she is threatened it comes out. The only reason she didn’t eat the guys that kidnapped her is because they used something to knock her out. As long as Prince and Gordon’s don’t physically threaten her she’ll stay completely human.”
“She soon will not be there for them to harm.” Chuin said cryptically giving Kai a knowing look.

“Good Afternoon sir. I’d like to know if you have heard the good news? The coming of the divine one is upon us! He will assassinate sin upon this earthly plane. The time is upon us to brace ourselves for the coming struggle. In preparation for the battle to come, I’d like to give you this copy of the Bible compliments of the First Church of Brunnis.” The door slammed in Sunny Joe’s face.
“Damned religious freaks!” Danny Li said as he slammed the door. He headed back to the living room and stopped dead in his tracks. The woman was gone.

Xev narrowly missed landing on the cactus outside the bathroom window. Kai was somewhere close. The message was completely clear to her. Divine-Assassin-Brace-Brunnis. Kai was here.
“Psst, come with me Xev. We need to get you to safety before they realize that you are gone. And from what I hear you don’t want to be in the line of fire when your friend gets here either.”
“Who are you?” Xev asked. “Where’s Kai?”
“I’m Sunny Joe and I’m a friend of Remo and Chuin’s. They are on their way along with Kai. And from what Remo told me, Chuin is pissed to the max for some reason. He also said Kai is feeling a little ‘aggressive’ too. I’m thinking an aggressive Kai is not a good thing, I already know a pissed off Chuin is major bad news.”
“Kai’s not here?”
“No he wanted you out of the way and safe first. Said to tell you he ‘feels’ like he woke up wrong. Let’s go, my truck is just over that rise.”
****
“Thanks. The House owes you one. We’ll see you in about an hour. Got a couple more to drop off with you for safekeeping.” Remo said. “Xev is safe with Sunny Joe. She got the message loud and clear and bailed out the bathroom window. So we just drop Ruby and Stanley off with Sunny Joe and then do what needs doing.”
“Wait you aren’t dropping me off anywhere.” Ruby protested. “Smitty says I’m supposed to go with you.”
“Stanley, Xev is safe. You tagged along to be here for her right?” Remo asked.
“Yeah I came for Xev.” Stan replied.
“And you said you were going to protect Stanley Ruby. You can’t protect him if you aren’t with him.”
“More importantly neither one of you wants to see what is about to happen.” Kai said darkly.
“Uh Kai, you don’t sound like yourself. Are you sure that protoblood is okay?” Stan said cautiously. “You sound almost like you’re mad about something, and that’s impossible right? The dead don’t get mad.”
“Most of the dead do not get mad. Unfortunately for Prince and Gordons, this dead man has found out that he does get mad.” Kai said.
“A well deserved divine retribution is at hand.” Chuin added.
“The ritual, it’s bringing out everything that was buried isn’t it?” Remo said. “6000 years worth of buried, I’ll remember to stay out of your way.”
“What ritual?” Stanley asked.
“The Sinanju ritual of cleansing. It makes you face and release every negative emotion you’ve ever had in your life. Even the ones you don’t know you had.” Remo said. “I think Kai is at the release of anger point.”

Sonny looked up at the sound of an engine. It was not a sound that belonged in the desert. He melted into the shadows of a rock outcropping as the van came to a halt. He allowed himself to relax as Remo emerged from the driver’s door. Chuin stepped down from the passenger door. The rear door opened and he recognized Ruby. She was followed by an average looking guy wearing a red jumpsuit.
The last to emerge immediately caught Sonny’s attention. The man was tall and slim the bun perched on top of his head made him even taller. His skin was an unnatural shade of white in stark contrast to his all black attire. Sonny’s hair stood up on end, he was looking at Death itself.
“Remo, Master Chuin.” Sunny bowed to the two Masters of Sinanju. “As always we welcome our Reigning Masters to our home.”
“Sonny, this is Stanley Tweedle and Kai.” Remo said. “They would like to see Xev.”
“Of course, follow me.” Sonny gave a whistle which was immediately returned. “The men are keeping watch for strangers. We aren’t taking any chances tonight.” Sonny said.
Kai noted the men scattered around the narrow rock passage. They were positioned to ambush anyone who entered the passage. Xev and Stanley would indeed be safe here.
The passage opened into a large basin containing a small village. The man led them to a brightly lit building. Xev sat on the floor surrounded by children listening intently to her as she told them about the LEXX.
“Kai! Stanley!” Xev ran over and hugged the two men.
“You are unharmed?” Kai said examining her.
“Yes. I’m fine.” Xev answered.
“Stay here, both of you. I mean it.” Kai said forcefully to Stanley and Xev before turning and walking out the door.
“Stan what’s wrong with Kai?” she asked.
“You mean other than being about 6000 years overdue for a class in anger management?” Ruby asked.
****
“Kai, are you alright?” Remo asked. “You were pretty harsh with those two. I get the feeling that’s totally out of character for you.”
“It is not out of character, it is a side of me that they have not seen and I would not have them see it now.” Kai replied.
“What do you mean ‘a side of you that they have not seen’?” Remo questioned.
“They first met a Divine Assassin under a simple ‘terminate and protect’ order. My orders were to protect the Divine Predecessors first and terminate any heretics that I encountered second.” Kai stated. “They have never seen me in any other light than protector or assassin. Divine Assassins have another function. Divine Shadow used us to annihilate entire worlds. He would activate a different program, one only accessible to him. When he did, we would kill hundreds, thousands even millions.
There is only one command in place and it is the command to kill until we had reached a preset body count, our objective was reached or until Divine Shadow ordered us to stop. Master Chuin’s ‘ritual’ has activated that program. I now have an objective, to kill all those who serve David Chang’s organization.”
