The changes that started happening to me were subtle. I grew, but only a couple of inches. I chalked up the mood swings to P.M.S. Mollie had never gotten it, but we'd never been exactly the same. I'd always been a tiny bit taller. That was the only way people could tell us apart.
People started acting different around me. There was whispering in other rooms. My senses were getting stronger, and I heard more than my family thought I did.
On the way home from school on a Monday, I could hear my mom whispering before I was able to see the house through the trees.
"Jacob, I'm so nervous."
"Shh. Go ahead upstairs," he responded.
Hmm.
"Did you hear that?" I asked A.J. from my seat right behind him as he drove.
"Huh? Hear what?" he said.
"I guess not. Never mind," I said slumping back down in my seat.
I was feeling very pissy. I couldn't help it, it was Monday after all. Going to school after two days of freedom made it suck even more.
When we pulled into A.J.'s spot in the driveway, I saw Dad sitting on the front porch with Asa.
"Hey, buddy. Go find your Mom," he said to Asa, and sent him into the house.
We piled out of the truck Dad got for Anthony, on the condition that he start working and pay him back.
The rest of us started to follow Asa into the house, but Dad stopped me.
"Hang on, babe." He looked so...serious. "How about we take a little walk in the woods?"
"Um, okay." I shed my book bag and my coat, no longer needing to pretend I'd be cold without it for the sake of my human classmates. I left my stuff and followed him as he started to walk toward the trees.
This could not be good. Internally, I started to freak out a little, but I tried to hide it.
At least he didn't beat around the bush.
"Your sister said that you were shaking in class today," he told me.
What a freaking tattle tale! "When did you talk to her?" I demanded.
"What happened?" he asked, ignoring my question.
I'll deal with Mollie later.
I shrugged. "I was really mad."
"How come?" he asked, as we both ducked under a low branch.
"That teacher gives us a crap ton of homework every day! Even over the weekend, she can't ever give us a break. She actually gives us moreon the weekends. I hadn't done mine because it's a joke. Maybe she should do her damn job and actually teach us at school!" I said angrily.
He stopped walking, and turned to face me. He put his hands on my shoulders and said, "Xandra, have you ever gotten so mad that you can feel it in your stomach, like you're about to explode?"
"Yes," I admitted softly.
"Do you feel that way now?"
"Sort of."
"Do you understand why?"
"Yes," I said as I started to tremble harder.
"It's okay, let yourself feel it."
"No, no it's not. I don't want to."
Because as soon as I do, life as I know it is going to be gone forever.
"It's okay, I promise. Close your eyes."
I did so, but hesitantly.
"Just let that feeling spread." I felt his hands slip off my shoulders, and heard him take several steps back.
"No, Dad. I'm scared."
"I know, but I'm right here. There's nothing to be afraid of. You'll see. We can't let it happen by accident the first time. You're gonna be much better off if you do it right now."
"I can't!" I insisted, squeezing my eyes closed tighter and clenching my fists at my sides.
"Yes, you can. You're my daughter. It's time to take your place as third in the pack."
I was too afraid of the unknown.
I could hear my brother howling back at the house. It caused my shaking to intensify.
"Come on, baby. Just let it go. You've gotta quit fighting it."
I trusted him, so I finally did.
I let the heat spread until I felt like I was on fire, I felt it in my fingers, my toes, even in my hair.
I could hear more of the wolves howling somewhere on the rez. It was like they were egging me on. It was like they were saying come on, do it.
Do it.
Do it.
It happened so fast, I didn't even realize I was phasing until it was over. As I tried to get my bearings, I was distracted by another weird feeling. I heard already faint voices fading away and disappearing, I could tell that had been the other wolves phasing out. I don't know how I knew that's what it was, I just did.
My eyes focused on Dad, standing in front of me in wolf form, too.
The whole thing had been so startling, I uncharacteristically started to cry. I just didn't know what else to do. I stopped when I didn't recognize the sounds coming from my own throat, that's kind of a scary feeling. They were strange, whining and whimpering sounds.
You did it!
It was so weird to hear Dad's voice in my head, like it was my own. I wondered if this was it was like for Grandpa Edward all the time.
Probably.
Dad was proud of me. He didn't actually say it, but he didn't need to when we were in this form, I could feel it. I couldn't tell if I was proud of myself as well, or if his feelings were just bleeding into mine.
Let's walk a little bit, Dad suggested.
I nodded, surprised at how heavy my head felt. Heavy, and long. I wasn't used to being able to see my own nose so well.
I jumped a little when Dad burst out laughing, flopping onto his side. I could hear his human laugh in my head, and also the chortling sound I'd heard him make as a wolf many times.
What? I demanded.
You are crossing your eyes! Quit it, I can hardly see when you do that!
Really?
Yeah. Now knock it off, he teased. Let's go.
Wow.
So I took a few tentative steps, noticing how much more space my feet took up on the ground then usual as I learned to walk again.
There you go, Dad said.
I kept going. Little by little, we went faster and faster. Soon we were trotting together, then running, then flying.
Pretty fast. You might even be able to catch up to Seth, he said.
Ha! What do you mean I might be able to?
I liked running like this, it felt good.
Renesmee
I approached A.J. after he'd phased and come back into the house.
"Did she do it?" I asked.
"Yeah," he answered, buttoning his shorts. "It went fine. He's taking her for a run."
Now all I had to do was wait. I settled in a chair next to the living room window to do so. I had a magazine in my lap that would probably remain untouched.
"Mom?"
I hadn't even noticed Mollie hovering in the doorway.
"Do you think she'll be mad at me?" she asked fearfully.
"I don't know sweetie, but you did the right thing, I hope you know that. Daddy and I are proud of you."
When she'd noticed Xandra clenching her fists and quivering with anger, she acted immediately. She asked for a bathroom pass, and hid in a stall with her phone, sending the same frantic text message to both Jake and I at the same time.
Jake told Mollie to keep an eye on her. This was the first time anything like this had happened, Jake felt the chance she'd phase by accident so soon was very slim. It was their last class of the day, we were counting on her being able to keep it together for just another half hour or so.
If things got bad, Mollie was to fake a family emergency and get her out of there. It wouldn't be faking really, it would be the truth, just not the entire truth.
We couldn't let her phase for the first time at school. I couldn't imagine what we'd do.
After much discussion over the past month, Jake decided for that first time, he would help her try to phase on purpose, instead of leaving it up to chance. That was a chance that just couldn't be taken. The pack agreed this was the best thing to do, and so did I. Now it was done, and she had a whole new life to get used to.
She and Mollie had never been more different.
Mollie sat down on the floor next to my chair and watched out the window with me, for her sister to come home.
"Do you think I'll phase?" she asked.
"There's no way to know for sure." That much was true. Xandra had done almost everything just before Mollie did, walked, talked, ect. There was no reason for them to think this wouldn't be the same. But we didn't think Mollie would ever phase. It didn't seem possible for an imprint to go wolf, since most of the theories on why imprinting happens involved procreation. It was still unknown if a female wolf could have children. We'd lost contact with the only person who could test that theory. We had no idea if she'd ever tried.
It had been years since Leah ran off with Patrick to Las Vegas to get married, and that's where she'd been since. We assumed they were still together, but childless. As strained and distant as relationships were in the Clearwater family, I was sure Seth would have heard about it if things were otherwise.
I hoped that if Xandra did want a family, she wouldn't give up hope. She might be able to if she stopped phasing. Even if she was never able to start back up again, the vampire in her would allow her to continue to live on just as the other kids.
Anything is possible. Xandra herself and all our kids were proof of that. Heck, so am I.
"Do you want to help me make up a bin for her to keep outside?" I asked Mollie. Keeping busy seemed like a much better option then sitting here and just waiting. "She'll probably feel a little exposed in a pair of Daddy's or Anthony's shorts!"
I'd started keeping a weatherproof Tupperwear bin full of shorts on the side of the house for wolf related clothing emergencies. Simply because I didn't enjoy being barked at, and having to throw a pair of shorts out the window for whoever was about to be naked. It wasn't always Jake or A.J.
Jacob called it being anal, I called it being prepared.
Mollie got an empty bin out of the basement, while I tried to find some clothes for Xandra. I selected a few older, casual jersey dresses that would be easy for her to slip into quickly.
Once it was full of several sensible options for today's shape shifting gal on the go, Swan inspected the contents. She held up a ratty old sundress Mollie had donated to the bin, she was unimpressed.
"What, she can't dress cute now?"
"Swan," Mollie said, exasperated. "This isn't for a cocktail party, it's so she can get back into the house without being naked."
"Oh, yeah. I guess these are fine then."
I waited at the window for what felt like hours for those two to come home. When I saw her, I knew I'd have recognized her anywhere. A mother knows her own child, in any form. Her long shaggy fur was a little more brown then red. It hung in her face blocking her vision, but underneath it, her eyes were the same. They looked thoughtful, but not frightened. She wasn't nearly as large as Jake or A.J. in wolf form. She was just beautiful, and somehow still slightly feminine in her walk.
I jogged over to her, and brushed her fur out of her eyes.
"Hey, sweetie. Did you guys have a nice run?" I asked.
She nodded her gigantic head.
"Once you've changed back, there's a bin for you with some old dresses and stuff in it for you, okay?"
She nodded again. After placing a kiss on her muzzle, I went back inside. Xandra and Daddy had some work to do.
Mollie
By the time Xandra managed to phase back, we were all done with our homework, and dinner had been ready for a while. Mom kept it warm in the oven, while Swan whined.
Xandra was a lot quieter then usual that evening. I let her be, I'm sure she had a lot on her mind. After Mom sent us all upstairs to get ready for bed, I asked Xandra if she wanted to sleep in my room. We were petite enough that we fit in each others beds just fine, even though they weren't made for two, and we'd sleep in each others rooms fairly often.
"Sure, let me go put my pajamas on."
I went to do the same, and crawled into bed. When my sister joined me a few minutes later, I offered her the pillow she usually used. As we got settled, I asked her if she was mad at me for telling on her.
"No. I kinda was at first, but I guess I understand why," she said.
"I'm sorry, I love you."
"You don't need to be sorry, I love you too."
Whew.
"So, are you ok?"
"Yeah. It's just weird," she said.
"I guess it would be...Isn't it cool to be so fast though?"
"I do like that part," she admitted. "When you are phased though, your mind isn't your own anymore. My thoughts become ours, it's kind of like they echo. First I would think about something, then Dad thinks about it, too."
"Wow."
"I'm gonna have to keep something from my bin handy at all times. I don't know about all this naked stuff!"
"Oh, ew. You didn't see Dad naked, did you?" I whispered. Mom had told us to not look in the back yard unless we wanted an eyeful. When he was showing her how to phase back into human form, he went back and forth several times himself.
"Oh, my God. No. He was, but I closed my eyes until he was a wolf again!"
"Good!"
She laughed and said, "I'm gonna see Seth naked!"
I gasped and shoved her shoulder. "Don't you look at it!" I hissed.
She kept laughing. "I could care less about his junk!"
"No, wait. Look, and then tell me," I said.
"Hell no. I'm not looking at any of them, not ever!"
I laughed with her, and didn't let on that I was slightly disappointed she wouldn't be giving me the full report on Seth.
I was just curious, nothing wrong with that.
"Do you wanna hear something else crazy?" she asked.
"Sure," I said.
"I probably won't get my period anymore."
"Really?" I asked.
"Yeah. Dad said that's what happened to Leah."
"They are kind of annoying anyways. I wish I could stop mine!"
"Ha ha," she said.
"What does that mean, like, for having kids someday?" I asked, sort of afraid of the answer.
"No way to know for sure. But Dad thinks if I stopped phasing I might be able to." Her voice got softer. "Isn't that sort of what makes you a woman though?"
"Nah. These do." I poked her in the chest and she laughed, but it quickly faded. "I guess we aren't identical anymore," she said a little sadly.
I wrapped my arm around her shoulders and gave her a squeeze. "They say nobody is really identical anyway. You've always been a tiny bit taller. Who cares?"
I felt her shrug.
"Okay, wait," I said. "So, Dad told you that stuff about Leah?"
"Mmm hmm."
"So you talked to Dad about your period?"
She laughed. "It was a short conversation, thank God! He just didn't want me to freak when it stopped he said. Yeah, it wasn't awkward at all," she said sarcastically. "Oh, and he couldn't even say period. He called it my monthly visitor!"
We laughed so hard we had to cover our mouths to keep from getting in trouble. If we got much louder, soon Mom would be knocking on the door and telling Xandra to go back to her own room.
"Oh, hey. I did your English homework for you while you were running around in the woods being a giant wolf and shit," I said.
She snorted. "I forgot about that, thanks."
"I think they are all right," I said.
"Cool."
"Do you think you'll cut your hair?" I wondered. We'd both been wearing our hair in chin length bobs since Mom got sick of helping us brush out tangles and "God knows what." She said that we are "too active to have such long hair. We'll all be happier this way!" She was right though.
"I've been thinking about that, I might. I'll probably at least get bangs. Hopefully then, I'd be able to see!"
I wouldn't tell her this, because I didn't want to bum her out, but I was just a little sad that we weren't the same anymore.
Jacob
Yesterday had been a huge day in the pack. Today would be another one, it was Cole's turn. He'd been showing all the signs he was ready. His name had come up several times during the conversations about getting Xandra to phase on her own. Since that had gone well, Jared and Kim didn't want to wait.
We were all getting up super early. This was going to take place before school. Obviously, Cole would be taking the day off. We were doing it early so that Kim wouldn't be saying anything like, "Hey, stay home from school today so Dad can get you phase later." We were just gonna go for it, without giving him time to worry. I knew Jared would be waking Cole to tell him first thing in the morning.
Before I got out of bed, I gently hugged Nessie's sleeping form, and tried not to think about the fact that she was naked under the covers.
When Xandra wasn't in her room, I knew just were she was. I found her in Mollie's bed, their arms draped over each other, still fast asleep. They looked so sweet, I couldn't wake her just yet, so I went back and sat on the edge of my bed. I really didn't mean to wake Ness, but I was glad to see those beautiful brown eyes. I wished we had time to be together this morning.
" 'Morning," I said, leaning down to kiss her lips.
"Hey, you," she said when we parted after a moment. "Is Xandra up?"
"Not yet."
She narrowed her eyes, but smiled at me. I reached down to cup her face, and stroke her cheek with my thumb.
"I know, I know," I murmured. "She's in Mollie's bed, and they looked so cute I couldn't do it. But hey, that's one of the privileges of being the alpha's kid. You get an extra fifteen minutes to sleep in."
When I checked on A.J. he was already dressed and ready to go, so I went back to get Xandra up. I'd given her an extra twenty minutes, actually. I sat on the edge of the bed, and leaned down to kiss her temple and rub her shoulder.
"Wake up, hon," I whispered, trying to wake her, but let Mollie sleep.
She kept her eyes closed, and blindly swatted in the direction of my voice.
"Come on, we've got pack stuff to do," I said.
"I'm taking a vacation day," she mumbled. "I'm not in the pack today."
"Not how it works, come on," I said.
I lifted the blankets off the two of them. They both groaned. Mollie, as she rolled away and pulled the blankets back around herself. Xandra, as she sat up on the edge of the bed and rubbed her eyes.
"What about school?" she said. "I'll be late."
"You aren't gonna go for a little while. You'll have 'mono' til you have better control," I said.
She considered that. "Cool. So what is it that we are doing up at the butt crack of dawn?" she said, looking behind herself with envy at her sleeping twin.
"We are gonna go help Cole phase, then we are gonna show you guys the ropes. Let's go have something to eat real quick before we go. I let you sleep in a little, so we've gotta get moving."
We sat at the kitchen table with Anthony and ate a few bowls of cereal before heading outside, just as the sun was coming up. She paused on the porch to admire the red and orange light streaking across the sky as the sun rose through the trees.
"Pretty. So that's what the sunrise looks like. I'll have to tell Mollie," she said, stretching. I laughed as I got a pair of shorts out of the bin.
"Come here," I said, and handed her a cord. "Use this to tie something to wear around your leg."
"Oh, yeah," she said.
"Don't lose it," I warned.
"Geeze, Dad. I won't!" she said.
"Okay, okay. If you are fond of those pajamas, I'd put something else on before we phase," I said.
"You mean, right now?"
"Yup," I said.
I probably should have mentioned to her that I was wearing boxers under my flannel pants before I removed them.
"Dad!" she shrieked, both turning away and putting her hand out in front of her face. "I know you guys are used to-"
"Xandra, I have shorts on."
Anthony doubled over with laughter on the porch.
"Oh," she said.
"So, do you wanna change?" I asked.
"No," she said. "It's fine, these are old."
"Okay, why don't you pick something out of your bin," I said, gesturing towards it with my head.
I showed her how to tie the tank dress around her leg, leaving enough room that it would stay put after she'd phased.
"Dad, I don't know if I can do it on command yet," she said, looking down at the spare clothes tied around her leg.
"Sure you can, you did it yesterday."
"Yeah..." she said, letting her voice trail off.
"You can do it. You ready?" I asked.
She took a deep breath and closed her eyes.
"Okay, I'm ready."
I talked her through it, and in no time we were on all fours and furry, running through the woods to Jared's house. One by one, the rest of the pack popped into our mind. It was the first time Xandra was phased with everybody else at the same time for more than just a minute. Thoughts bounced around wildly, along with our brothers intentionally talking to each other, but she handled it well. I was glad this group of guys was able to keep their thoughts relatively clean around my little girl...this time anyway.
Shit! Xandra thought when she almost took a low branch right in the face. She paused and waited for me to scold her for swearing.
It's fine, I told her.
Really?
Yeah.
I can swear? she thought, almost gleefully. That's right, Mom can't hear me, and she'll never, ever know!
The laughter of a few rolled through the pack mind.
Well, I mean, don't go crazy, I clarified. I guess you can when it's appropriate. That's a Mom rule, not a pack rule.
She was pleased.
I went over our plans for today with them. Once Cole had phased, I'd work on going back and forth with he and Xandra. Later tonight, we'd all meet back at home for some pack histories, rules, hot tips, and hot homemade pizza courtesy of Ness and Mollie.
Jared and Cole were waiting for us on the porch. Our newest brother looked a little nervous, yet determined.
"I'd come with you, if I could," Jared told him. "You'll be just fine, though."
"I know."
Jared would be able to come with him, but only halfway. Once he phased, he'd be my responsibility.
I saw Kim and Marla watching from the window as Jared lead Cole into the woods. We stayed hidden, most of us were just here for sound effects.
Remember Xandra, you stay phased while I help Cole learn to go back and forth because I want you to work on it, too. Every body else though, you know what do to, I told them.
Xandra started to get nervous, and pictured the lunch table she shared with Cole at school everyday.
You can stay out of sight, we don't need to be able to see each other for you guys to practice.
I could feel her relief. I wouldn't want somebody I ate lunch with at school to see me naked about fifteen times in one day either. I'd done that, but it's not quite the same when it's somebody of the opposite sex. They'd have to get used to it, and they would in time, but I could at least let them get used to some other stuff first.
We listened as Jared started to help Cole phase, just as I'd done with Xandra yesterday. When I started to howl, everybody else joined me. I really liked having my kids on either side of me. Xandra seemed to enjoy being noisy. It was hard not to laugh.
That's my girl!
It's nearly impossible to not phase when you're surrounded with all that howling, which is of course the point. Cole took a little longer than Xandra had, but he did it. We watched the boy turn into a big black wolf.
Woah, he thought.
Everybody else went human again, just ask I'd instructed. Cole was reeling from it all.
It's not so bad. It's kind of cool, really, Xandra assured him.
I was so proud of her.
I knew they'd be just fine.
