Prologue
I have traveled to this spot many times since the first visit. Sometimes, something just compels me to go here, even if it’s just to sit there and feel the wind blow my hair around. It has been over a year so far that the strange visits had occurred, and sometimes I still can’t make much sense out of it all. But if it did make sense, I think it would lose the magical taste to it all. How can this all happen I cannot say, but it has. I still wait for the outcome of all this excitement and tragedy.
Yes, it’s both. I’ve lost and gained a lot since all of this started - the quest as I refer to it. I’m sure no one will truly believe me, a lot of the times I didn’t believe it myself. But once you’re hit with the facts and occurrences every time you question, you stop the doubts and wait for the next sign. It took me six months, I think, to get to this point. Another six months of waiting impatiently. Then seeing pieces falling into place and still more waiting for other pieces to come into play. Some of my magical friends applaud my patience.
If they only knew how much patience I really had through all of this.
I’m not the kind of person to sit by waiting for things to occur. They all should have happened last week instead of right now. This ware tre than just a test of faith and determination, but also of how much can I take before reaching a breaking point. Believe me, I’ve hit that wall too many times to count.
Now I sit beside the tree he first came to me, on the small island that hangs over the edge of Niagara Falls. Luna Island it’s named. Rather appropriate for all the magic that was conducted here. Legend has it that the Native Americans used this spot to worship the God of Thunder Water, throwing their offerings of food to appease the gods living behind the curtain of water. With the rush of the flowing rapids and the constant wind whipping through here, you can’t help but wonder how much magic is stored here since it was born at the end of the ice age. Must have been why he chose this spot.
I sit here and a stray though passed through my mind. I was acting like the ladies of old, waiting for a loved one to return at the same spot they said goodbye to them. It felt rather appropriate, as I knew I had to wait for him to return. He won’t show up here, but he visits me occasionally while I sit here. He really has no need to as he can show up at my home just as easily. Spirits can do that.
Yes, he is a spirit. I can’t figure out what happened to him or how it happened, but for some reason he had left his body behind without dying. Somewhere, someone is walking around soulless and doesn’t realize it. It has become my job to find his lost person and reunite the two again, and in the end will I have the person I’ve been searching for with my heart and soul. He is my soulmate – we’ve been together through many lifetimes, on different worlds. He was someone that I was in love with since I was a teenager, and didn’t even know he was alive….
Because he existed in my books.
This is where faith is required to read, or either chalk it up to an excessive imagination or a pipe dream. But it’s real – at least it is to me. Take this tale with the heart of a child, because that is what’s required to believe anything improbable in this world. I never dreamed that this could be possible – but it was.
I remember how he appeared to me. With a flash of fireworks he stepped in front of me and asked if I enjoyed his gift of welcome. How I looked up into shining amber eyes that were shadowed in a hood of black, a staff in his hand like it was a walking cane. The familiar smirk as I looked at him in shock and surprise, then sat down next to me and started talking, marking my cheek with his hot fingers. I still feel the trail he left there to this day. The pure excitement from just seeing him, talking to him, feeling the magic that radiates from him – just an amazing night that occurred. To think that he was next to me – the same person I fell in love with so long ago – was there by my side, and said he wanted to be with me forever.
Why me?
Why did this happen to me?
Why did I deserve this, when I have nothing in myself that I consider worthy of him?
Why, out of all people, did he choose me?
I sometimes still ask that. I still have no real answer. Everyone else knows why, but for some reason I can’t see it. Maybe I’m not supposed to know.
Maybe it doesn’t really matter why. Maybe what really matters is that I was chosen for all the right reasons – whatever they may be – and I have to see this through in order to have the love of a lifetime…or lifetimes.
This is the story of my quest. To find the missing person and to reunite body and past life soul together so that he can be with me in this lifetime, and in the next. There is no failure, just a lot of hard work and perseverance – on both our parts.
I am to search for the reincarnation of the archmage, Raistlin Majere.
