Every creature of the Underdark knows the price she extracts, but no one understands that price better than the Hunter. Before Cattie-brie, before Icewind Dale, before his blind mentor Montolio, there was another. She was the first, the best.
His lungs and muscles burned – surely his nerves were on fire! And yet so exhausted was he that he felt numb to the pain of it. His pursuers were not so very far behind and only one thought permeated his consciousness: do not stop. To stop was to invite death, for surely his pursuers would find him then. They had taken away everything he had known, everything he had held dear. They would take away the only thing he had left if they caught him – his life.
He had been running for hours. How long, exactly, he could not say, but the ache in his bones from his legs repeatedly hitting the hard ground indicated that it was probably well over a day. They had come across him as he slept, and he had taken down as many as he could, but vastly out numbered, and fatigued from his escape from Menzoberranzan, like every warrior, he knew when to flee. He had hoped to be able to out manoeuvre them, but the exhausted renegade had been unable to lose them so far.
He saw the end of the tunnel, and two quick glances provided no side tunnels to make good his escape. Deft fingers desperately sought any crack, hoping his infrared vision was deceiving him. Finding nothing but solid wall, he could hear the pursuit drawing close though a quick glance proved they were still too far away to see him. His mind raced, knowing he had only seconds before they would be able to see him, eradicating any change of escape. An idea struck him and he threw himself against the ceiling, using his innate ability of levitation. He pulled his piwafwi around his overheated body to keep it from his pursuers’ infrared vision, praying to whatever deity was listening that he would make it out alive.
He could hear them. His sharp ears told him the drider approached first, the eight armoured legs clacking quietly on the floor and walls of the tunnel. The rest of the hunting party was not far behind, and completely silent.
He could not hear them, but that did not mean they were not there. He stole a quick peek, and was rewarded by flashes of the telltale signs of red that indicated something alive below. He dared not breathe lest the sound of it give him away. It felt like an eternity before they gave up the search, and Drizzt sent silent prayers to Lloth - not knowing whom else to pray to – that this particular band of drow had not been from his mother city of Menzoberranzan, or they would not have given up on their prey so easily.
Drizzt dropped to the floor, astounded that his legs were able to hold his weight after running for what felt like days. Turning to face the way he had come, putting the stone of the tunnel’s end at his back, Drizzt’s first thoughts were to find sustenance and water. However, he realized that his body had other ideas as he took two steps and collapsed on the cold stone.
--
When he awoke, his head throbbed where it had hit the ground. His muscles ached from the intense strain he had put on them, and his throat felt ragged, but he felt no worse for the wear, except that all sense of time and place had left him. He had no idea how long he had been unconscious, or even where he was…
His scimitars were not at their usually place on his hips; a cool draft across his flesh made him shiver, demonstrating his state of half-dress. The stone beneath him seemed softer than he remembered it so he took a cautious peek, to take stock of his surroundings.
It was not rock he lay on, but a thick bed of brown moss, piled to one side of what appeared to be a small cave. The faint sound of running water told him an underground spring must be nearby, and he could see a small basin in the stone floor. A cluster of phosphorescent fungi growing on the wall above his head provided a small amount of light. A small pile of ash indicated a fire. His scimitars, shirt and piwafwi lay in a shelf dug into the cave wall, not too far away. He could not see the cave entrance without moving his head, but Drizzt figured that whoever – or whatever - had brought him here did not want him dead right now, or they would’ve left him for the Underdark scavengers so he pushed himself up to take a better look around.
“Good morning, Noamuth Uss1.”
His head whipped around, searching out the source of the lilting voice. His lavender eyes found the source of the voice sitting against the wall next to the entrance of the cave.
His first reaction was shock at seeing such a beautiful female out here in the wilderness, without priestess’ robes or heavy armour. Instead, she wore tan coloured pants of some sort of supple leather and a shirt that she had quite clearly taken from some unsuspecting male sentry. It didn’t quite fit right, and the lacings about the neck lay open nearly all the way providing quite the view. Blushing as much as a drow could, Drizzt moved his eyes to her face.
Her face was lean, with high cheekbones, and curving lips that turned up in the corners in a small smirk. Had it been any other drow female, Drizzt would have been wary of that smirk, but her brilliantly green eyes held no malice, only a faint amusement, and hidden concern which Drizzt did not entirely catch. Her white hair shone almost purple in the light of the cave, and wisps of it escaped her loose plait to dance about her face. If ever there was a more beautiful female, Drizzt had not yet met her.
“How do you feel?”
“Horrible,” he answered truthfully. His throat protested the use, and his voice came out hoarse. “But I am glad to be alive. I owe you my life, To''ryll Solen2.”
She waved off his comment and stood, smiling at his made up name for her. Walking over to the basin, she scooped out a small clay bowlful of water before coming to sit nearer to him. “Here, drink,” She said simply, handing him the bowl. He took it warily, looking at the water inside as if searching for poison in it. She scoffed at him. “Come now, you think I would rescue you from the bowls of the Underdark just to poison you now? The water is clean and fresh – I will share it with you if it will ease your mind.”
Drizzt raised his eyes to hers – greener than the Moonshae isles and clearer than the water in the bowl in his hands they were – and sought out any trace of malevolent intent. He searched hard, and finding no such malignance, downed the entire bowlful. The sweet water was cool, and fresh like she had claimed it was. It soothed his parched throat and took away some of the cotton in his mouth.
“More?” she asked, taking the bowl back from him. Drizzt nodded. This time he drank the water more slowly, savouring it.
“Thank you.”
Shrugging nonchalantly, she pulled a leather pouch off the shelf that held Drizzt’s belongings. “It’s nothing. Here.” She handed him the pouch, which held a kind of edible mushroom. Drizzt offered to share with her, but she declined. “You look to need it more than I, Noamuth Uss.”
“Perhaps, but they are the fruits of your labour. Let me share with you.” He said, smiling at her.
Rolling her eyes, she conceded. “With one condition – what is your name? I cannot continue to call you Noamuth Uss forever.”
“Even though I may be lost forever?” She raised an elegant white eyebrow at him, her lips tugging at the corners as the tried not to smirk. “Very well then. My name is Drizzt Do’Urden.”
“Drizzt.” She rolled the name around on her tongue, and he enjoyed how she said it, like his name was a song to be sung to the world. “Drizzt.” She said his name a third time, and smiled, her green eyes lighting up. “My mother named me Shayzlyn aBrinn. But everyone always called me Shay.”
“Thank you for saving my life, Shay.” He smiled wryly. “Very few drow would have.”
She only smiled.
Later, he would ask her why she did what she did, but she only shrugged and replied: “Because these tunnels are lonely. And perhaps because I am too trusting.”
Drizzt couldn’t help but think that maybe there was more to it.

This chapter is still in progess, technically. The main flow of it will not change, just little grammar points and small references (like the Moonshae Isles one... what was I thinking!) It has also been a long time since I have read the books, and I do not have any readily availible, so forgive me if some of my references and facts are off, and feel free to correct me!
