The Phantom had spent the past several weeks dwelling on the past and on his lost love Christine. He had been living on the streets and stealing from others to survive but the time had come for him to face reality. The Opera house was burned down and was no longer his welcoming abode but a haunting memory. He needed to find a home and someone who would be willing to welcome his presence which would indeed be a task. He would also need to leave his familiar name of choice the Phantom and go with his birth name of Erik.
It only took several days until Erik found someone willing to bring him in their home. Her name was Adele Delancy an older woman who owned and operated her own theatre. She was a tall woman with mostly gray hair and lively blue eyes. She had inherited her small theatre from her father when he passed away and had kept her promise in making sure it operated even upon his death. When he had come to her doorstep asking for a position in the theatre she had immediately smiled and let him in. So now he found himself a crew member of Adele’s theatre house and while he appreciated it he also hated it.
“Erik come and tighten these ropes over here and then you may leave for the night!” Erik nodded to Edwin and finished the ropes he had been in the process of tightening. When he was finished with the other half of the ropes he headed up the staircase to his room. He spent almost all his time in his room when he was not busy cleaning or preparing for a show downstairs. No one bothered him in his room but once he stepped outside he was slammed with words of cruelty. He had found few friends in Adele’s large mansion of people but those few were enough for him.
There was Edwin Halifax who was just an all around good man with little hair and a slightly crooked but nice smile. Noel Oswald a very muscular and tall man with a raw sense of humor that even Erik sometimes did not understand. Byron Sully and his brother Chaney Sully had instantly liked Erik for reasons unknown to him but then again they seemed to like anyone willing to be their friend. Dori Yule was his only female friend she was sweet and a good listener and while Erik had been attracted to her at first he later learned she was married with children. Where once he would have found these people unworthy of his presence he now realized that it was he who was unworthy of their presence.
Every day was the same in the theatre. Awake, eat, work, eat, work, watch, work, and sleep and he had grown to realize that this was now his life. “Everyone!” Adele walked into the center of the stage “everyone! Listen! Listen up! I am pleased to bring back our star who as most know was away being tutored and taught some helpful skills” She waved as a young woman walked out onto stage her head bowed, her hands tightly clasping each other, and her feet straying no more than a few feet away from each other with each step. “Our Amaray Bruyere!” everyone clapped and some who knew her well cheered as she lifted her head to look at everyone who had been either cleaning or rehearsing.
Erik had no idea who she was for he had only been there for a little more than a months time now and she had been gone for over three. He turned to Edwin with a puzzled look on his face “Amaray is our most talented star and was sent away for some tutoring in lip reading.” This puzzled him more why would she need lip reading? He was about to voice this thought but Edwin beat him. “She is deaf. Lost her hearing while she was young. They say her mother tried to kill her by dropping her as a toddler but instead she lost her hearing.” Erik turned back towards the woman who was now leaving the stage with Adele. “How did she come to be here? And what does she do?” “She can sing but her greatest gift is her ability with the piano she can play like an angel from heaven.”
“Hey you two get to work!” Edwin and Erik turned to see Gavin who was almost always mad at someone or something. They both went their ways and did their work but Erik was clumsy the rest of the day. He couldn’t stop thinking about this new woman and he was curious to know more about her. By the end of the night he was so out of his own that Gavin sent him off early and he was glad for it. He had been ascending the stairs when Adele appeared at the top and waited for him to make his way to her. “Erik my young friend. What do you think of her my little prodigy.” “She is” he stuttered with his thoughts “interesting . Why do you ask me? My thoughts mean not compared to someone as Bellew.” She seemed to know that he would say something like that “ahhhhhhhhhh...Bellew he is not but a boy who can sing he is not a man who can sing and compose.” Erik was surprised at the response but yet pleased that she felt Bellew was not all he was made up to be.
Bellew was a tall, handsome, long haired god to most but all who really saw him knew he was naught but a boy who wore his crown too big for his head. “I want your opinion Erik. You are a true musician I know you are and I would love if you would come with me and hear her play.” She motioned in the direction she wanted him to go and so he did. When he came to a large room at the end of the hallway he stopped and waited for Adele to catch up and open the door. When she did he was in awe at the sheer size of the room as well as its beautiful design. “She designed it herself last summer while I was away and she found herself with a hefty amount of free time.” “It is amazing” he closed his eyes and breathed in the sweet smells of the room “it smells like vanilla.” Adele smiled at him “yes it always smells nice in here of all the rooms this one never ceases to smell like anything other than Amaray.”
Erik turned towards Adele and she knew what he was going to ask “she is over here. Come this way.” They went through a hallway in the room that was adorned with pictures of a man who looked familiar and a few pictures of a young girl. The hallway opened up into a large room full of candles and antiques and in the center sat Amaray at the seat of a piano. Her back was to Erik and Adele and she sat there calm and silent just staring at a sheet of paper. “I will inform her of your presence she is not used to guests.” He nodded as Adele went up to the woman and placed her hand slowly on her shoulder and spoke slowly to her so that she could read Adele’s lips.
“She is going to play for you.” He nodded and waited for the music to start. The minute she struck the first key until she struck the last Erik was mesmerized. It was a haunting melody that was slow paced at first but climbed to a faster but still haunting melody. When she stopped she sat still as if waiting for something that would never arrive. “What do you think?” He turned to face Adele and spoke in a whisper “it was amazing.” Adele went to Amaray and again tapped her shoulder and at this the woman turned to face Erik.
His first thought was of her reaction to his horrid face that had made so many others afraid of him. But she did not cringe nor did she even act as if she needed to avoid gazing at his face. She stared directly into his eyes and seemed to be waiting for something from him but he did not know what. “Erik tell her what you thought of it.” He snapped out of his trance and did what Adele had done spoke slowly so she could see his lips move. “You were amazing….who taught you to play?” She seemed to take a moment to register and then answered him. “I was taught by my foster father until his death and then came here to his sister Adele and now she is my teacher.” He looked at Adele “so you can play as well?” she nodded “yes but not as well as her my brother taught her all his secrets he was a genius. I feel as if I am holding her back she is much more talented than . Perhaps you Erik can teach her for I know that you are a musical master.” Her smile was a plead and he could not turn her down he would begin to teach Amaray the next day.
