"This way!" Peter motioned Lucy to follow him, Edmund and Susan through the path. "Lucy, come on."
"I…" Lucy shook her head, backing away from the lamppost. "Peter, I don't think I want to see what is in there."
"Lucy, you said remembered that post." Peter sighed. "Stay here. We will go explore and come back."
"Alright."
Lucy turned and walked to where she left her horse. Something felt strange inside her. She should follow them, but it felt so wrong, but why? The others didn't seem to mind it. The others? She looked back behind her where the lamppost was. They had not come back yet. How far did they go?
"Peter? Susan? Edmund?" She cupped her hands over her mouth and called out to them. "If you're playing a joke on me, it is not funny. Come on out from there." This was so frustrating. She must have been waiting for at least ten minutes. It didn't take that long to explore for tracks. "Come on, you guys!"
She walked until her hand touched the lamppost. Lucy leaned forward and tried to peer through the dense gathering of bushes and trees. She could not see a thing, though. Her heart was pounding with worry for her brothers and sister by now. They couldn't have gone far enough away to not hear her. She was shouting for them as loud as she could.
"Peter?" Lucy took a quick breath. "Peter, this isn't funny!" Tears were already starting to fall and moisten her cheeks. "Edmund Pevensie! Susan Pevensie! Peter Pevensie! Come back here this instant!"
Lucy never felt so alone. Her heart sank when another twenty minutes passed and there was still no sign or voice from them. She gasped and backed away from the lamppost. Her feet stumbled back and tripped over the plush green of the grass, causing her to fall backwards onto her bottom. Lucy, The Valiant, Pevensie was scared.
"Peter?" Her voice was littered with her own sobs. "Please you guys."
"Queen Lucy?"
Tumnus rounded the corner of a trail. His arms were full of small packages. He saw her tears and dropped the packages. The loyal faun was at his queen's side. Lucy pushed her self up and wrapped her arms around him. She was in tears and very upset.
"Tumnus." She tried to take deep, calm breaths. "T…they are gone."
"Calm down." He hugged her gently. "Who is gone? What are you doing here? I thought you were off with the others. You were hunting the white stag."
"We were." She pulled away from the hug. She was still on the ground, sitting. Tumnus was on his knees before her. "We…chased the stag to that." She pointed at the lamppost. "It ran past but disappeared in that dense trail ahead."
"The others followed it?"
"Yes." Lucy shook her head. "I remember that thing. A lamppost?" She wiped her cheeks with a handkerchief. "It was something from a dream. The others decided to go into the trail just a bit and search for tracks. I started to follow but I stopped. Something inside made my stomach twist into knots."
"Oh." Tumnus had a worried look on his face. "They have not come back yet?"
"No. That's why I am upset. I called after them. They were gone for about thirty minutes. They could surely still hear me but they didn't answer."
"Come on." He stood and extended his hand to her. "Maybe we can try and ask one of the centaurs about that trail. They travel this forest all of the time."
"Tumnus, I am so worried." Lucy pulled herself up. Her hand was in his and she faced him. "What if something horrid has happened? I…" She bit her lip. "I didn't hear anything though. This makes no sense!"
"Calm down. We will get to the bottom of this."
Tumnus smiled as comfortingly as he could. He remembered when he first met Lucy here. The same thing has just about happened. He came around the corner and dropped all of his packages. Lucy glanced back to the lamp post and then the trail.
"Peter! Edmund! Susan!" She had to try one more time. "I…I am going back with Tumnus. If you're in there and playing a cruel joke on me..." She hoped it was a cruel joke deep inside. "I…Well I hope you learn your lesson because I am taking your horses, too."
Tumnus sighed. He hated to see her so upset. Her tears made his heart heavy.
Lucy walked up to the horses and nodded to Tumnus. He picked up all the little packs and walked over beside her now.
"Come on your highness. We should get you back to Cair Paravel" The faun placed a few of the packages in one of the horse's saddle bags. "I will ride with you." He patted one of the horses. "Do you mind if I ride you?"
"No." It was Peter's horse. "I do not mind."
"Thank you, old friend." Lucy looked forlorn. Sadness covered her features. Her eyes were red from her tears. "I hope, somehow, that this is all a prank that they have chosen to play on me for my eighteenth birthday."
"Let me help you up." Tumnus smiled and cupped his hands together for her to use as stepping prop. "Try and not worry. I will help you."
"Again, thank you." Lucy sighed, mounting her horse. "I don't know what I would have done if you had not come along." She picked the reigns of the horse up in her hand. "You really are my best friend."
"I always will be, Your Highness." The faun nodded, mounting his horse. "That will never change." He leaned over and grasped her hand for a moment. "Keep heart, my queen. All things happen for a reason in Narnia."
"I know but…" She held his hand. "I wish Aslan was here. He could tell us what happened to them."
"I could always go check the trail for you." Tumnus didn't mind putting himself in danger for her sake. "If you like, that is."
"NO!" She gasped, covering her mouth. "I mean…no." Lucy let go of his hand. "Everything inside me is telling me to avoid that path. I would not think of sending you down it when I am afraid to go through it myself."
"As you wish. We will go ask some of the others if they have an idea of what has happened."
"You don't have to ride with me, you know." She looked over at him. "I can...go alone if you must make your way home."
"Can't get rid of me that easy." He winked. "Come on." He kicked the horse's side lightly. "I will take you to Cair Paravel and stay with you. Together, we can get to the bottom of what has happened."
"You never cease to amaze me, Tumnus." She was riding beside him. The other two horses were tied to her saddle horn. "You…are…"She smiled. "I would be lost without your friendship."
"And I would be equally as lost. When I saw you all those years ago, I never realized how much you had affected me. I pondered for a long time after. Why did I not turn you in to the White Witch?" He chuckled. "I learned it was because your heart was so beautiful and your spirit so kind, that It made a stupid fool like myself feel warmth again."
"You had it inside you the whole time."
Her voice was softer, and she spoke in a half whisper. He could hear the upset undertone in her voice. His mind raced for answers. She shouldn't be made to feel sad like this! Why were they doing this to her if it was a joke? It was cruel and did not speak well of them at all. He wanted nothing more than to hold her, to comfort her. Tumnus wanted to help his friend smile again. She had such a beautiful smile that it was not fair to rob Narnia of it.
"Tumnus?"
"Yes, Your Highness?"
"Call me Lucy for one; and for two, can we stop at your home. I…find that I want to rest. Also, just maybe, they will know to look for me there if they come back. I feel bad about taking their horses."
"We can do that. It is getting late anyways and Cair Paravel is a few days ride away."
"Thank you, Tumnus."
"No need to thank me." He sighed inwardly. The tears stopped on her outside but he could still hear them on the inside. "I am your servant and friend, remember?"
"No, Tumnus. You are not a servant. I would never call you such a thing." She smiled sadly. "You are more than that."
"You really are noble and valiant." He turned down the path that led to his small hide away. "We can send word by the trees that you are with me. Maybe we can call one of the others to come. They can help us search for the others tomorrow perhaps."
"That sounds like a good idea." She nodded. "Maybe they are hiding elsewhere in the wood. Perhaps they even cut down a different trail." She had to keep hope inside her. Lucy didn't want to think she would not see her brothers or sister again. "Yes." She reaffirmed her resolve. "We can do that."
"Very good. That is the Lucy Pevensie I remember."
"You haven't called me that in years."
"What?" Tumnus blinked. "Oh." He grinned. "Lucy Pevensie?"
"Yes, silly." She was sounding a little better. Her old friend helped to relight the candle of hope inside her. "You started calling me Queen Lucy or Your Majesty. I thought you forgot my name for a while."
"I could never forget that, my lady." He chuckled. "I was simply using the title which you deserved. You are one of Narnia's rulers."
"Yes." She nodded. "That is exactly why, when we find Peter, Edmund, and Susan, I am going to give them a good tongue lashing." She sighed as she thought about them. "They are kings and a queen. They should not play such cruel jokes on their own sister."
"I will help you." Tumnus turned down another path into the open field. It led straight to his home. "They won't pull something like this again. It isn't a very good thing to do before one's birthday."
"I…" She swallowed hard. "It is hard to believe that I am turning eighteen in just a few weeks."
"You have grown into a beautiful and mature woman."
Tumnus looked at her soft, dark curls. They graced her shoulders like a gentle whisper. Her silver crown sat atop her head proudly. She really was beautiful. He always saw her as that, though. She never needed a fancy gown or a crown to show him that.
"Have I?" She looked up at him finally. "Sometimes I drift into dreams of a different place. When I was a girl. There was this oom? " She paused to collect her thoughts. "Peter agreed to play hide and seek with me. The others wanted to as well. I hid in this place. I believe it was when I first found a wardrobe. It led to Narnia."
"Spare Oom!" He nodded. "I remember you speaking of that place when we first met." He chuckled. "Of course, I was a much younger faun back then."
"Oh hush. You are not old." She shook her head. "It feels strange to think about it. I seem to remember not liking that place that we were at. It felt like something was ripped and torn away from my heart. Narnia made me feel happy again. I think that is why I love Narnia so much."
"Narnia loves you just as much." He looked ahead to see his small home coming into view. "You helped save her and bring about peace."
"I had to help my friends, didn't I?" Lucy looked at the front door and smiled. "You, the Beavers, and all of them. Aslan showed us all we could be so much more than what we were."
"Spoken like a true queen of Narnia." Tumnus jumped down off the horse and walked around to where she was. "Shall I help you down, my lady?"
"Tumnus." She smiled and held his hand. "Lucy. Please? How many times must I ask you to do so?"
"Let me think." He helped her down from the horse, kissing her hand softly. "At least a million more times, my lady."
"You old charmer you." She chuckled. "I will help you with your packages."
"If you wish." He slid back around to where the saddle bags were. "I have fresh bread and berry pudding in here. I also have Sardines." He grinned. "I do like them."
"Weren't you carrying packages the first time I saw you?" She took a couple of them from him. "I seem to recall that you were."
"I was." He walked over to his door and pushed it opened with his hoofed foot. "You also helped me carry them home."
"Just like now." She blinked. "Like a new beginning."
"That is one way to look at it. " He turned to look at her. "I don't think it means anything special. Your siblings just have not showed themselves because they know you and I will give them a good sound talking to."
"Well, I have heard an angry faun is something to look out for." Lucy smiled. Her spirits were back up again. Somehow just being around him made things feel like they would be alright. "Of course I could be wrong."
"Ahh" He smirked, walking inside. "Pardon the mess. I was not expecting royal company."
"Do you still have your flute?"
She followed him inside and sighed. The old smells of his little hollow filled her nose. She visited this place many times. He nodded and placed the packages away into their proper places. He stopped to look at Lucy again though. She was over by his old table and looking at the picture of his father.
"I should like to hear it again if you please." She sounded distant. "Maybe something soothing to the heart."
"I would be happy to play for you, my lady."
"Tumnus."
"Fine. Alright." he chuckled and pulled the old flute's case out. "Lucy."
"Thank you."
"You are most welcome." He set the case down and pulled the old flute up. "Would you like something to drink before I start?"
"Some berry juice would be delightful. My throat is a bit sore from yelling."
"Coming right up."
Tumnus had a large cup of juice in her hands before she could count to ten. Lucy chuckled and leaned back in an old, comfy chair. She sighed when the liquids calmed her burning throat. Tumnus took his place in the opposite chair and nodded.
"Now, what shall I play?" He thought about many songs. He could only think of one that he wanted to play for her however. "I think I have just the one."
"Oh?" She let her eyes fall on him. "What one will you play for me?"
"It is an old faun's song. My grandfather played it for my grandmother. My father played it for my mother. He also played it for me when I needed comforting." He placed the flute to his lips and blew warm air over its mouthpiece. "It is appropriate…with your request, I believe."
"I would like that." She sighed and sipped her juice. "I would like that very much."
Tumnus nodded and began to play for her. It was a soft, sweet melody that filled her heart with a melody of hope. The duel notes joined together to make the notes dance and carry over the air. Lucy placed her cup to the table beside her and smiled. He played so beautifully. She tried to learn how to play the flute but she could never play as passionately as he did.
"It's beautiful," Lucy whispered. She was relaxing before his eyes.
Tumnus stood and began to dance and sway to the music. Lucy chuckled as the faun turned and gracefully performed for her. The song picked up to a medium paced tune as he played on. The harmonizing made her sigh and rest her head against the chairs arm. Her eyes were steadily closing. The exhaustion of the day was finally getting to her.
Tumnus slowed his tune into a sweet melody for her. She needed to sleep. She was so upset that she forgot her body was tired. They had ridden for two days. They chased the stag across Narnia. Tumnus was told they left for the hunt days ago so he knew how tired she should be. Finally his tune ended when she was fully asleep.
"Sleep. Tomorrow we will look for your sister and brothers." He whispered "And hopefully, ease your pains." Tumnus set his flute aside and picked up a blanket. "For Lucy Pevensie should never be upset." He laid it on her and smiled. His hand touching her cheek. "Not while Tumnus is here to make things better."
He backed away, turning to the door. He would go speak to the trees to deliver her message. He hoped someone was near. Maybe one of the centaurs was not far. Tumnus sighed and took one last look at her before he exited. How she made his heart beat. He felt his heart swell and block his throat at times.
"Lucy." Tumnus shook his head. "You really are a good friend."
He would never admit anything else to him self. He could never let him self believe there was more because of the heart ache that came with rejection. The ideals of 'what if' ruled his mind. Instead of 'reach for the stars'.
"Sleep well."
He closed the door behind him. He had a job to do now and Tumnus would never let her down. When he said something he would do it or die trying, which this worried him because he honestly didn't know if they would find Peter, Edmund and Susan. Kings and queens disappeared in Narnia's past just like they did. None ever stayed. Maybe that was why he didn't promise that they would actually find them because deep down inside, he knew they were no longer in the strange, magical land.
"Why did she stay if it was their time to go?" Tumnus found himself outside and talking to himself. "I hope that I am not right for her sake. Can her heart handle being left alone here without them?" Tumnus sighed and looked up at the trees. They were the only other things around to talk to besides himself. "Can you deliver a message for Queen Lucy? It is to any that know these forests well. The Centaurs, or the fox's; anyone really. Please ask them to come as swiftly to this place as soon as possible."
The trees whispered into the winds. Their leaves danced, spinning into the air. Tumnus knew they heard him and gladly would deliver the message. Now all he had to do was worry about Lucy. It was always Lucy in his mind. He liked the others but she was his reason for being there if truth be known. His stomach wrenched if he thought about it too long. The faun grunted and turned back to his small hollow. He had to push non sense thoughts aside.
"Time to go in." He nodded to him self. "Tomorrow shall be a long day."
It really would be, for tomorrow they would search. They would search only to find that Tumnus's worries were correct. Peter Pevensie, Edmund Pevensie and Susan Pevensie left the land of Narnia to return back to the land they came from. They to would also have to deal with a loss. They had to deal with Lucy being gone from their lives. Neither side had it easy it seemed and this was only the beginning of things.
