Chapter 1
Late March
“Jacqueline, get dressed. We have to get you out of here.” She stirs from her slumber.
“What is it Thomas?” She looks at her older brother.
“You need to put this on. So we can get you to 221b Baker Street.” He hands her the boy closes. “I will have a maid sent up to pack your things for your stay. We mustn’t let Martin no where you are or that we know that he is a stepbrother.” Half an hour later I come down the stairs to my awaiting brother.
“Do I look the part? It took forever to put my hair up into the hat. But let us get away from here.” Half an hour later we arrive at the heart of London, out side of 221b Baker Street. My brother helps me down from the carriage. He told me on the way over for me to stay their will he goes up to the door and nocks on the door. He knocks on the door it is answered by a middle aged woman, my brother motions for me to come in. I walk up the stars and in to the hall.
“You may go in and wait. Only the Doctor is in there.” I look at my brother. He gives me a small nod to go in. I open the sitting room door and walk in. a middle-aged man is reading a book by the fire. He stopped reading and looked up at me as I entered.
“Good after noon you must be a new client. Would you like some tea?” I nod not knowing if I should say anything to him. Letting on that I was a young Lady not a young boy. He stands up and pores us a cup of tea. “Sugar.” I nod. “Cream.” I nod again. He hands me a cup of tea and sits back down in his chair.
“Thank you.” I say. Seeing how you can’t nod a thank you and not be rude. He smile, he seems happy that I finely decided to speak. My brother inters the room.
“Jacques you should go change out of your clothes before the detective comes home.” I finished my tea and left the room. I see a blue dress hanging on the railing, which I had never seen before. I take it up stairs and put it on. It was the colour of the sea before a storm. I took my hair down and put it up in a simple bun. I collected the boy clothes and decided to take them down stairs. When I heard the front door open and a tall handsome man entered the hall. He was taking of his winter coat and placed his hat on the hock before entering the sitting room. I continued down the stairs and placed the clothes next to my trunk. I walk over and knock on the door I hear my brothers voice on the other side of the door.
“I’ll get that it will be my sister Jacqueline.” He opens the door. That dress makes you more beautiful then ever before. He kisses my cheek.
“Thank you brother.” He moves out of the way. The man that I sow before had just stood up after I entered the room; he was now staring at me. I smile and blush at him. I look over at the doctor and smile at him he looks rather confused. So I was right he never suspected me. “Thank you doctor for the tea earlier.” He smiles at me realizing that the boy and young Lady before him where the same person. The young man is still staring at me.
“Miss. Cole you may have my seat. Fore I have been on the train most of the day.” The doctor gives him a strange look like this had never happened before or very rarely. I take my seat and knottiest that there where two other chair vacant. Every one else takes their seats accept the young man who is still staring at me. “Now what brings you here Mr. Cole.” He takes his gray eyes of me and places them on my brother. “Besides that you want us to protect your sister for you.”
“Well I would say that this is a very strange situation. But we must first start with the death of are mother. Are father remained unmarried for to year in which he marred another widow. At this time I had already moved out and was living in London. My father had sent my sister to stay with me who at the time was seventeen. He wanted what was best for her so I took full custody of her.” His eyes return to look at me. “At the holidays we would go and see are father but we would never see are stepbrother.” His eyes return to me brother with interest. “We never sow him until two months ago. He had come to court my sister.” His eyes looked at me. I smiled but did not get one in return. I would have never known it was him. But Jacqueline had seen his portrait on one of our visits to are fathers house.”
“You wish us to take care of your sister because she’s in danger.” He moves across the room at takes a vacant seat. He puts the tips of his fingers together and looks at my brother.
“Yes, but theirs more then that. Are father died a month after his visit and we found out at the will reading that he was written out of the will because of his gambling debts. This meant that are stepmother got a small fortune for her self and the rest went to me. My sister was given a large amount of money, that is sitting in an over seas bank waiting for her to get married. That money would set her off for life.”
“So your stepbrother wants to marry your sister so he can pay of his gambling debts and perhaps gamble the rest.”
“Yes that’s what I came to my self. The only thing is we know how he is so he would have to kill use and his mother to get the money. The only way that he would ever be able to marry my sister would be to force her then, kill her.”
“Well don’t worry about your sister we will protect her with are lives. Now I believe you need to be somewhere at three o’clock.” I smile my brother has been looking at his watch to much again. Thomas was a bit taken back by Mr. Holmes.
“Thomas you have been looking at you watch every time you have stopped talking.” This got a smile out of the young man.
“Miss. Cole I think I should have been the one to say that.”
“Don’t worry Mr. Holmes my sister is normally like that. Well Jacqueline I must be going." My brother stands and I give him a hug.
“Take care of yourself Tom.”
“I will Jacie. You have your gun with you. I put in some spare bullets into your luggage. Make sure that you tell Mr. Holmes or Mr. Watson if he finds out that you are here.”
“I will brother. Don’t worry.” I fallow him into the hall; he puts on his winter coat and gloves. I hand him his hat be fore he heads out. We hug for the last time before he leaves. He whispers:
“I will be back if I hear any thing new which comes up or if any thing happens.” I watch him walk down the stars to the awaiting cab and then he was gone. I walked back into the sitting room Mr. Holmes was standing by the fire once again. his back was to me and his hand rested on the mantelpiece. He turned when I walked into the room.
“Miss. Cole. Mrs. Hudson will show you to your room.”
“Thank you Mr. Holmes.” He smiles slightly.
“Your brother forgot to mention the name of your stepbrother.”
“His name is Martin Aitken Witson. Aitken was his mother’s maiden name. He is a year older than my self, I’m 24. He’s got blond hair, blue eyes, about 6’2. Also he wears a lot of dark clothing.” He gives me a big smile.
“That will be enough information for me to work on.” He walks past me to the door of the sitting room. “I will see you at dinner Miss. Cole. I shall take up your trunks up stairs. Seeing how I’m going that way.”
“Thank you once again Mr. Holmes.” He nods and leaves the room. The doctor stands up went in search of something. He gave a cry when he found what he was looking for.
“Miss. Cole may I ask you some questions.” He sits back down in his chair.
“Of course doctor.” I come and sit next to him. “What kind of questions?”
“Well when I first meet Mr. Holmes I wrote down his limits of knowledge. I have decided to compare you to him, because you where able to tell use that your brother was looking at his watch. Also how you described your stepbrother seeing how you only sow him once.” He poses for a moment and looks at the paper in his hands. “Well the first question is your knowledge of literature?”
“Well I have read more books then my brother. And on occasions he has said that I am more knowledgeable then he is. I have read everything that I could get my hands on even medical books. If I could go to collage and get a degree I would become a doctor.” He smiles and nodes at me in agreement.
“What about philosophy?”
“That is more an area of my father and brother. I don’t really know that much about it.”
“Astronomy?”
“I have studied some of the solar system, but it is quite boring at times, except when you see a comet or a shooting star.”
“Politics?”
“There isn’t any point in me caring about politics.”
“Botany.”
“I know every plant that is able to survive in England. But I wish to learn some more about foreign plants.”
“That is quite good. I have a few books on foreign plants which you can barrow.”
“Thank you Doctor.” I smile at him. “That will be a great help.”
“Now what about geology.”
“I know different soils and rocks; but not enough for any use.”
“Chemistry.”
“I studied some of my brother’s books while he was at collage. He used to buy some supplies so we could do some of the experiments.”
“That is very interesting. Anatomy.”
“That is very low at the moment, but I wish to learn more about the human body.”
“Yes I remember you mentioning that you wanted to be a doctor if they would let women into that profession. If you wish I could find some of my old medical books.”
“Oh thank you doctor.” I said as I gave him a big hug.
“That is quit all right Miss.” Cole. I sit back down. “Do you play any musical interments?”
“Yes I play the piano.”
“Do you do have any other hidden talents?”
“I’m good at handling a gun, sewing, cooking, writing poetry and also riding a horse.” He stands up and goes over to his desk and starts looking through stuff.
