Chapter 1
Damn Brian for this, Mia thought as she looked out from the building where she taught karate-do. Brian had called in sick at the last minute and Mia would have cancelled his student’s class if the student hadn’t been Jamie. He was an abused child in foster care that had anger problems but had been improving since he started coming to her dojo. Looking out into the dark and seeing no one, she ran across the street and hopped into her car, quickly locked the doors.
Mia understood what it is like to be in foster care. After her mother had died she was raised up by foster parents. She had been lucky only being moved around twice. She could still remember that night when her mother was killed. Her mother had been a waitress. She had to work a double shift that day and by the time she got off most of the taxis was gone so she decided that they could walk home. It wasn’t too far and Mia only being seven at the time, her mother had wanted to get her home and put to bed. They had made it two blocks when her mother realized that they were being watched. Knowing that she couldn’t protect herself and Mia both she urged Mia to run for help. At her age Mia was scared and ran. She just made it to a place she could hide when four very tall blonde men surrounded her mother. Mia couldn’t hear what was being said but they seemed to be taunting her mother. They were pushing her around and Mia could see tears on her mother’s face. Knowing that if she should run from her hiding place they would see her and she watched in horror as one of them grabbed her mother and bit her neck. Her mother was passed around to the others until finally they dropped her to the ground. Mia gasped when she saw her mother hit the ground which caused them to look in her direction. One had taken a step towards her when they must of heard something because all of the sudden they took off. Mia was about to run to her mother when another blonde man came and bent over her mother’s body. Mia couldn’t see his face but after a few moments the man stood up and pulled a phone out of his pocket and made a call. Once he was finished he looked down once more at her mother and then took off in the direction of the other four blonde men.
Once the man had left, Mia ran to her mother and took her hand. She looked down and saw her mother staring up into the night sky. Reaching out, Mia touched her mother’s cheek that was pale and cold to the touch. When the police showed arrived, Mia had been lying over her mother’s body, crying. It took them almost 15 minutes to get Mia to let her mother go.
Shaking off the memories Mia made her way home as fast as she could. Since her mother died Mia didn’t like to be out when it was dark, but she wasn’t a coward and could take care of herself. When she was settled into her final foster home she convinced them to let her take karate-do lessons and Mia soaked up the knowledge like a sponge. Once she became a black belt she moved onto other forms of karate-do. Mia just didn’t know how she would react in an actual situation. It was one thing to fight men but totally different fighting vampires and that is what she assumed they were. She had done a lot of research and found many different theories on vampirism. She even found a website about daimons and something about Dark Hunters and squires but it led one to believe that is was some kind of role-playing game site.
Pulling into her garage she closed the door and went into her house. Walking thru her kitchen she pressed the button on her answering machine and hung up her coat. She had two messages. The first one was a stupid telemarketer and the second was her friend reminding her about tomorrow night. Tomorrow was her friend Lisa’s birthday. Mandy, Lisa, and Rebecca cornered her and convinced her to come out with them. She decided that with such a big crowd at the club they were going to that it would be safe enough. Besides, Mia was getting tired of being afraid and spending her nights alone. She needed to get a life.
After she had something to eat she called Lisa and told her she would meet them at the club and went into her bedroom to change. Putting her keys and watch onto her dresser Mia carefully took off her mother’s necklace and held it a minute, remembering when her mother had given it to her to wear. It had been the night she died. Mia had been afraid to walk home in the dark. The night before Mia had had a nightmare. To calm Mia down, her mother gave her necklace to her to wear. Rubbing her thumb over the symbol for protection Mia could still remember the feeling of safety when her mother put the necklace around her neck. Mia had often thought that if her mother had been wearing the necklace that maybe it could have protected her. Trying to shake off the guilt she felt over her mother’s death Mia changed into a pair of drawstring pants and a tank top.
Going into her meditation/workout room she lit a few scented candles and sat crossed legged on a mat and tried to clear her mind. With all of the memories earlier it took her longer than usual to reach her trance-like state. Mia sat there for almost an hour. When she was done she checked the house to make sure it was secure and went to bed.

Mia was having a great time with her friend at the club. After about a half an hour and a couple of drinks she started to relax. It was crowded in the club. Mia and her friends laughed and danced and ogled men. Lisa was a petite brunette, beautiful and always drew the attention of men and even some women. Mandy was the tallest of them with raven black hair and exotic looks and by far the wildest of them four. Rebecca was about Mia’s height and was the shyest of them. After about an hour the drinks started to get to Mia and she needed to use the restroom.
“I will be back girls!” Mia called over her shoulder as she made her way through the crowd to the restroom.
Once finished, she walked out of the restroom and down the hallway. Turning the corner she ran right into someone and Mia would have fallen if not for two strong hands holding on to her elbows to steady her. Preparing to excuse herself she looked up and froze. Mia was being held by a very tall blonde man. He was a nightmare come to life. He had a deep tan, broad shoulders and his hands felt like they could crush her without any effort.
Darius looked down into the most beautiful eyes he had ever seen; they were the color of a blue green sea. It was her he thought, the little girl. Years ago Darius came across some daimons attacking a woman. He had come to late to save her. After calling the police he went after the daimons and caught up with four and dusted them, freeing the woman’s soul. The next evening he was reading the newspaper and was angry with himself when he read of the little girl found lying over her mother’s body. He should have sensed the girl and hadn’t known why he did not. She must have been hiding nearby. Darius was furious that he had left her alone even though the police had shown up minutes after he left. She had been just a child and must have been terrified. The next couple of years after that he would check up on her, watching her from a distance. He didn’t know what drew him to her. Just after she had started martial arts training Ash had transferred him to the Seattle area. He had just been back here in San Francisco for a year. When he first arrived he looked her up to find she had grown into a beautiful woman and owned her own dojo. He had been drawn to her as a child and even more so now that she had grown up. This feeling of need, of protectiveness was so strong. He had only seen her once since his return. He knew that eventually he wouldn’t be able to keep his distance and he had made his choice a long time ago to be a Dark Hunter. Alone was how he liked to be. That was why he didn’t have a squire. Getting close to someone and losing them was something he just couldn’t take.
Darius sensed her fear. He wanted a few moments with her and knew if he should let go of her now she would run. “Whoa there, are you okay? I am so clumsy. I really should watch where I am going.”
Mia just stared up at him. She was still frightened but now took a closer look at him. The hands that held her were warm to the touch. She could sense power radiating from him, like that of a predator but didn’t sense anything evil or sinister. Making herself say something, she said, “I’m okay. You can let me go now.”
‘How sweet her voice was, just like an angel’s,’ Darius thought as he slowly released her. “My name is Darius Colt,” he said while offering his hand.
Taking a deep breath she put her hand in his, “Mia Roberts.”
Mia watched as Darius bowed over her hand and gently kissed it. He had old world flair to him. Slowly she pulled her hand out of his, still scared of him. He was just so handsome, scrumptious really, Mia thought. She had never felt such desire for anyone before, especially someone she just met. “I had better return to my friends before they send out a search party.”
Knowing he must let her go, he said, “It was great running into you.”
Mia just stared up at him for a moment. When he smiled he was even more gorgeous and she didn’t think that had been possible. Giving him a tentative smile, “Yes, well maybe I will see you around some time.”
As Mia made her way back to her friends she felt his eyes on her the whole time.
Darius watched her walk back to her friends. He couldn’t seem to take his eyes off her. He should leave he thought. Never in all these centuries had he been drawn to another in this way. He had been watching her with her friends for a few minutes when he noticed Mia become still and pale. Wondering what frightened her so he looked to where she was staring and cursed.
Mia couldn’t move. There across the crowded dance floor were three vampires ushering two women to the door. She knew that should those women go with them they would die but she just couldn’t make herself move. Before she realized what she was doing Mia looked to where Darius had been only to find him gone. Looking back to the vampires Mia looked in horror as Darius stood, talking to them.
“Naughty, naughty daimons, don’t you know this is my city? Let the women go and let’s see if you are brave enough to meet me outside,” Darius said with a sneer.
“Dark Hunter stay out of this,” one of the daimons said while he grabbed one of the women by the throat.
“Really are you such a coward to hide behind a woman. Oh how I miss the old days when you daimons actually had back bones,” Darius said, shaking his head, looking quite bored.
Growling, the daimons pushed the women at Darius and took off out the door. Shaking his head once more, Darius followed them.
Mia started for the exit when she seen Darius follow the vampires. She didn’t know if he knew what they were but she just couldn’t let him get hurt. Running outside she paused and then heard fighting going on around the side of the club. Turning the corner she was shocked at what she saw. Darius was an incredible fighter. Before she could move forward he stabbed one of the vampires in the chest with a blade and it exploded into dust.
Darius could sense Mia in the parking lot. Not wanting to draw attention to her he taunted the two daimons that were left. As he was stabbing his blade into one of them the other came at his back. Darius swirled around to a cloud of dust and then found Mia standing there with a dagger in her hand, looking wide-eyed up at him.
When he knew Mia had followed him it had scared the hell out of him and nothing had scared him in a long time. Not able to help himself he took the knife out of her hand and drew her into his arms. He could feel her trembling and pulled her closer. “Mia you are safe now. Everything will be okay,” he whispered, as he buried his face in her hair.
Mia knew that she would never be okay. How she envied those who were ignorant of the monsters that roamed the night. Mia shook her head, “No, nothing will ever be okay,” she breathed.
Knowing he had to do something Darius swung Mia up into his arms and started for his car.
Mia buried her face in his neck. She knew it was crazy to go with him but for some reason he made her feel safe and she hadn’t felt that way since her mother had died.
They almost made it to his car when Mia’s friends came running up to them. “Mia are you okay? Who are you,” Lisa fairly shouted.
Mia didn’t want to talk. She felt confused and had many questions she needed to ask Darius.
Darius felt Mia cling to him and knew she wanted to leave so he said, “Mia is fine. She just doesn’t feel well. My name is Darius and I am a childhood friend of Mia’s.”
“Mia?” Lisa asked, not sure if she should believe him.
Mia looked at her friends and said, “Lisa, I am fine. I think maybe I drank too much. You know I don’t go out often. Darius is going to take me home.”
“Well you had better call me in the morning or I swear I will come over and bang down your door until I know that you are okay,” Lisa insisted.
Trying to give them a reassuring smile Mia said goodbye and Darius walked them the rest of the way to his car. As he was putting her in the passenger side Mia asked, “Darius what about my car? I can’t leave it here.”
“Don’t worry. Trent, one of the bouncers, is a friend of mine. I will have him drive it to your house,” Darius said then walked around in got into the driver’s seat and started up the car.
Darius pulled up to the front of the club and motioned for Trent to come over to the car.
“Hey Dar, what’s up?”
“Hey man, not much. My friend here is not feeling too good. I was wondering if you could see that her car makes it back to her house,” Darius asked.
Trent nodded, “Yeah, no problem man.”
Darius gave him the keys and after telling him Mia’s address and where her car was parked he pulled away and started for home. It took a minute or two before Mia realized she had never told Darius where she lived yet he knew her address.
Darius could sense that Mia became agitated. Glancing at her he asked, “What’s wrong Mia?”
Mia looked at him and asked suspiciously, “How did you know where I live Darius?”
Great, Darius thought. He should have remembered to ask her where she lived. Now he could feel her fear of him. He didn’t want her to fear him. “Mia there are some things I need to tell you but I don’t want to do it here in the car. I am not going to hurt you. I am going to take you to my house because it is safe there and I don’t want to leave you alone. Just relax and we will be at my house soon,” he said, hoping that she would believe him. Trying to make her feel safe he reached over and took her hand and gave it a gentle squeeze.
Mia knew that she was stupid to trust him. She didn’t even know him but she grabbed his hand with both of hers and looked out her window.
Darius was on fire. Mia was rubbing her thumb back and forth on his hand and he didn’t even think she realized that she was doing it. Oh how he wanted her to caress other parts of him. He longed to draw her to him so he could taste her lips. He knew he shouldn’t be thinking about anything other than comforting her. He was going to try to answer all of her questions and hopefully she may gain some peace with the past.
“Mia I am going to need my hand back,” he said, smiling.
Mia had almost forgotten she was holding onto him. For some reason Mia liked touching him and wondered what it would be like to be kissed by him. Letting go, she said, “I’m sorry.”
Darius smiled, “That’s okay. I don’t mind you holding my hand but we are here.”
Home Darius thought, his sanctuary. It wasn’t smart for a Dark Hunter to get so attached to one place. As a rule, Dark Hunters are usually moved around every thirty or forty years because they don’t age but Darius had been lucky. The last couple of centuries he had been relocated a few times but only briefly. Ash always sent him back here. In fact, Ash had sent him home when they were still having problems in Seattle. Darius had wondered at the time why and still does. Ash was weird that way. He knew a lot and was not very giving when it came to his reasons for things.
Mia watched in awe as they drove thru a huge iron gate and up a drive lined by trees. The house, or castle, sat back from the road. The house was made of stone and even had a tower. How strange, Mia thought. It seemed the house was a mesh of old and new.
Darius drove around to the side and pulled into a huge garage. Once he turned off the car he said, “Come, I will make some coffee and see if we can get you warmed up.”
Mia followed him into the house and was surprised how cozy it was inside.
Darius sat Mia onto a stool, “I will go get a blanket for you then make some coffee.”
Mia nodded, “Okay.”
After returning with a blanket, Darius put it around her shoulders and made some coffee. Filling two mugs with coffee Darius asked, “Do you want anything with it? Are you hungry?”
“Do you have French vanilla creamer?” Mia asked.
Darius smiled and nodded yes, “Perfect, my favorite.”
After adding creamer to both of their mugs he asked, “Why don’t we go up to my library? There’s a fireplace up there and a couple of cozy chairs.”
“That sounds great,” Mia said, wrapping the blanket around her more tightly.
Darius smiled and said, “Follow me.” Taking the cups, Darius led Mia thru a living room and up a set of stairs. When they walked into the library Mia slowed down to a stop and stared at all of the books. Two of the walls were floor to ceiling bookshelves with ladders on each that rolled along the wall. Books, mostly leather bound and old lined each shelf so there wasn’t a space left.
Darius put the coffee on a side table between the chairs in front of the fireplace and turned to look at Mia. “You like books?” he asked.
Mia smiled and nodded, “Yes, I love them. How did you get so many?”
“It is my little obsession. I love to read. I collect original copies. Have a look around while I start a fire,” Darius said as he crouched down in front of the fireplace.
Walking up to the books, Mia lightly trailed her fingers across them until she came to one that said Shakespeare. Pulling it out gently, Mia carefully opened it. The book was leather bound, very old and hand written. Inside the front cover there was writing that said ‘To my friend, may you one day find the one who will return your soul. May peace find thee, William’. Mia glanced at Darius. She watched him as he crouched in front of the fire. Not able to quell her curiosity, she asked, “Who was this written for?”
Darius stood and turned to find Mia holding his most prized book. Darius wondered what Mia would say if he told her that William had wrote it to him. She would probably run from the room. Instead of answering her he said, “Come and sit. Your coffee is getting cold.”
After a moment she knew he wasn’t going to tell her so she put the book back and went to sit down. Holding the mug in her hands she sipped her coffee while she watched Darius turn to stand before the fire resting his hand on the mantle. Taking a deep breath, Darius asked, “Do you remember the night your mother died?”
Mia shifted in her chair. ‘How did he know her mother was killed?’ she thought. She didn’t want to talk about it but she knew that she needed answers about the vampires and obvious he knew something. Taking a steadying breath, she said, “It was late at night and we were walking home from my mother’s work. Shortly after we left, my mother knew we were being watched so she told me to run for help. I just found a place to hide when they came at my mother. I was too scared to move and knew they would have seen me if I came out of where I was hiding.”
Darius turned and looked at Mia, “You were too young to help her Mia. There was nothing you could have done. They would have killed you too.”
“But I should of done something,” she whispered as tears started down her cheeks.
Darius crouched in front of Mia and gently wiped her tears away.
“After…after they dropped her to the ground they heard me but before they could get to me they must have heard something because they suddenly took off. Then another one came and bent over my mother. He then made a phone call and then left in the direction of the other vampires.”
Darius took one of her hands and said, “Mia they aren’t vampires. They are called daimons. They don’t live off blood but peoples souls.”
“Souls what do you mean?” she asked, confused.
“Before they become daimon they are called Appolites. At age 27 they die but should they decide to become daimons they must steal souls to live or they die. But once they take a soul it starts to die. Some souls are stronger then others,” Darius said, and watched how she was taking this so far.
Mia gasped, “They took my mother’s soul. What happens when that soul dies?”
“It is lost forever,” Darius said which caused Mia’s tears fall even faster. Caressing her cheek he quickly said, “Mia it is okay. That other blonde man that came, that was I. I caught up with those daimons and killed them. I freed your mother’s soul.”
Mia searched his face. That was years ago. How could that be, she thought, he didn’t look that old. “What are you?”
“I am a Dark Hunter. We were made to hunt and destroy the daimons,” Darius said.
Mia arched her brow and asked, “Made, by whom?”
Darius didn’t want to throw too much information at her all at once, so he said, “There will be time to tell you everything. It is late and you look exhausted. Just know that there are those that hunt the daimons. I am so sorry I left you that night. I should have sensed you. I left you alone.”
Mia reached out and caressed his cheek, “Darius you saved my mother’s soul. You killed those monsters that took my mother from me. Thank you.”
Darius leaned forward and gently kissed her forehead. He stood and picked Mia up and started caring her out of the library. “Mia I am going to put you in the bedroom next to mine. I sleep during the day because I hunt all night. If you need me at anytime just come and wake me. We will talk more when we both get some much needed sleep,” Darius said as he carried her to his guest room.
Mia snuggled up to his warmth. She still had many questions, including why he looked so young, but she was tired and hoped some sleep would help.
Darius carried her into a bedroom full of antique furniture. A huge canopy bed took up most of one wall. There was a window seat, a fireplace, and a huge clothes chest. Soft rugs covered the wood floor. Placing her on the bed, he said, “There is a bathroom thru that door. Feel free to explore the house should you get up before me. Here is a shirt and a pair of sweats of mine.”
Mia took the clothes from him and said, “Thank you Darius, for everything. You have been watching over me all these years haven’t you?”
Darius nodded, “I was moved for a few years, but yes. I just wanted to know you were safe. I should have been there to save your mother. I am so sorry.”
Mia sensed his anger towards himself. Putting her hand against his cheek she gave him a gentle kiss. Pulling back she looked into his eyes and said, “Darius you did all you could do. I don’t blame you. They are the monsters. They are to blame.”
Giving her a smile, he said goodnight and left to go to sleep.
