Dark Passion
A Dark Series FanFic

Prologue
United States, March 2006, North Carolina State University
A large red A+ graces the top of one of the research papers on the stack floating down the aisle. To Jane's great surprise, it is her paper that earned such honors. Sweet! she thinks. All of her research into the healing traditions of the indigenous peoples of the Carpathian Mountains paid off.
“Jane Grant, please see me after class.” Professor Adams says, a large smile gracing the woman's normally stern features. More good news from the look on her teacher's face. Jane sits calmly in her chair while she really wants to jump up and down with excitement. A large, goofy smile stays plastered on her face throughout the class. She has finally found something she both enjoys and is good at. Looks like following her instincts in choosing a major was the correct path.
She waits patiently while the other students file out at the end of class before standing. “You wanted to see me, Professor?” Jane inquires, approaching the front of the small auditorium.
The older woman looks up and smiles. “Yes, dear. You seem to have put quite a bit of work into your paper.” Jane simply nods, glad someone noticed her effort. “I have recently learned about a summer research grant available to undergraduates. I think your work would be perfect for it.”
“Really? That's awesome. What do I need to do?”
“There is a rather lengthy application to be filled out, and they do require an essay on the subject to be researched. If you can come by my office sometime, I have several copies of the application. I think your research paper would work well for the essay they are wanting.”
“When can I pick up the application?” Jane asks excitedly.
“If you have time now, we can go there at once.”
“Sure. The sooner I can get started on the application the better.”
Professor Adams smiles again as she finishes packing her things. “I'm glad to see you are so eager. This program is a wonderful opportunity.” She heads up the aisle towards the door, motioning for Jane to follow. “This research grant is specifically for doing field research on the chosen topic. Should you win the grant, it would mean spending most of your summer doing onsite research.”
Jane can feel her eyes growing round. This sounds too good to be true. “That would be so awesome,” she murmurs quietly, earning another smile from her professor.

Two months later...
Jane races through the three connected buildings at the northwest edge of campus, trying desperately to not be late for her final. Her auburn tresses stream out behind her, flying over her open book bag. Her right hand clutches a letter. Upon reaching her destination, she cries out, “Professor Adams, I won! I got the grant!”
“Congratulations,” Professor Adams says with a smile. “You need to find a seat, though. It's about time for the test to start.”
Jane barely manages to sit still and concentrate long enough to take her final. When she finishes, she approaches the front of the auditorium to hand in her paper. She softly asks, “When are you going to be in your office so we can talk?”
Professor Adams looks up, a hint of a smile on her face, “After this is finished.”
Jane smiles back before leaving the classroom. The usually full windowsill across the hall is blissfully empty today. Taking a seat, she looks through the packet of information about the grant while she waits for the professor. She has twenty-five hundred dollars to use for a research expedition to the Carpathian Mountains. The options for how to use the money are staggering. Thus, she seeks advice.
Minutes later, she senses a presence in front of her. In the silence of the hallway, she hears rapid, shallow breathing. She looks up from her reading to see one of the young men from her class. The very same one that caused several of her suite mates to swoon when he spoke to her in the brickyard just a week ago. They all seem to think he's quite the catch. “Yes? Can I help you with something?”
“Heard you tell Professor Adams about winning a grant of some sort. How about I take you out to dinner to celebrate?” he asks, voice coming out in a bit of a rush.
“Okay, sure, why not.” she answers. It's about time I had a little fun. “When?”
“Awesome. Tonight around 7 work for you?”
“Sure,” she nods.
“See you then, Jane.”
Wow, he must be nervous. He never even introduced himself. I wonder if I should let him kiss me. He is kinda cute, I guess. God, what is wrong with me? The guy makes all my suite mates swoon, makes their blood heat. I can't seem to care. They all lust after his body. I can't imagine letting him kiss me or touch me, much less having sex with him. I don't want to sleep with a man until I find the ONE, the man meant for me, for forever. First I have to find a man I'm actually attracted to. A small sigh escapes her lips at her depressing thoughts. Maybe I shouldn't have agreed to a date so readily; I don't want to lead him on.
