Chapter one
*********************
Glaring at the map in his hand Kael sighed. Whoever wrote it had a sick spiteful sense of humor. There were lines all over the map, numbers and words were so small and fuzz, and supposed rock formations looked like trees! Throwing the cheep map onto the ground he stomped on it, forcing it into the mud with his steel toed doc’s.
*This is just great! Wonderful!* Kael was now in the middle of the woods, a pack on his back, and his SUV broken down two miles back. Kael hated family reunions! They never went right and shouldn’t even happen! Kael wasn’t even going to go . . .
He wasn’t until his mother called. Her guilt trip story about her thirteen hours of labor and his painful birth without meds always got to him. All he needed to know was how big his head was as it came out of her vagi- . . . It made him retch every time she talked about it. It wasn’t that he feels bad about it . . . It was the fact that she wouldn’t shut up about it till he agreed to whatever she wanted, and until he agreed she would yell at him and half the house hold, Jane-Marie Tippet was not a soft voiced woman.
Kicking at the dirt path before him, Kael pulled out his cell phone. Still, no signal. He was so going to change companies! His mother was so going to have vapors about him not being at the family dinner set for tonight. He could just imagine what she would say too. ‘Kael! Where have you been?!! It’s not every day your family gets together! Don’t you care at all about us? Oh this is your sister’s wedding all over again!! Come on, your sister brought some friends with her. They’re single. You need a woman in your life!’
It would go exactly like that. And he had only been three minutes late for the practice wedding . . . but little details like that didn’t matter to his mom. He would get to the house dirty and tired, wishing for food and some sleep, his mother would yell at him in front of everyone, her new husband would be behind her nodding his head, everyone else would be watching. It would so suck and Kael was under no illusion that it wouldn't happen. His mother would yell at him for his tardiness, then question his devotion for his family, then she would try to hook her ‘gay’ son up with a pretty girl. *What else could go wrong with my life?*
It began to rain. Hard.
Kicking at the poor defenseless earth Kael let a hiss of breath pass through his teeth. How was it that Lady Luck would fuck him over like this? She was screwing him side ways and he didn’t even know it!!
Rain pelted down hard and within a few minutes he was soaked to the bone. With his teeth chattering and his thin limbs numb with cold, Kael hiked his backpack up onto his shoulders getting a better grip on it. He had to choose a large camping backpack, didn’t he?!!!! Looking at the endless road then at the forest Kael turned into the woods. That stupid map that he had trashed had shown the road doing a big loopy turn to the left . . . If he went through the woods he could save himself two miles. Finding a deer path Kael trudge along.
Two hours later Kael was calling himself fifty different kinds of stupid. He was sooooo lost! It was getting dark! And his long black hair was wet and weighed a ton, and the long braid kept slapping against his ass and thighs making them wet. He was so going to kill his mother! He was going to beat her to death with her fake red-haired wig!!!!!
Finding an odd old tree with a good over hang, Kael leaned against it. It was the only shelter he could find, it was better then nothing. Leaning against the dark trunk of the tree Kael gasped as he felt a static like energy surround him. He watched bug eyed as a blue light rose from the mud and surrounded him. As the light washed over him Kael felt fire race along his skin and through his bones, like little creatures with knives picking at his body. As the light climbed up his body Kael crumpled to the floor and laid in the cold mud.
Blacking out Kael never noticed when the light disappeared. But when it did he was changed. The land around him was also different. No longer was Kael surrounded by trees. He was in a green field under a clear sunny morning sky.
*********************
Giving a moan of pain Kael opened his grey eyes and looked around. It had stopped raining and he could hear people. Trying to stand Kael called out to the people only to be startled by his own voice. A falcon like cry echoed out of his throat. Managing to stand, Kael panicked when he looked down at his body. He was a fucking bird!!!!!!!
His body was in the shape of a slender bird of prey, his wings that used to be his arms were huge! At least twelve feet or more long!! The feathers were a rich brown to a golden rust color. Along his breast were pure white feathers with black leopard like spots. He would think it was pretty cool if it wasn’t for the fact that he WAS A BIRD!!!
Spreading the humongous wings, Kael tried to keep his balance. His new clawed feet made it hard to walk. Waddling out from under the tree Kael bobbed his head as he looked around him. Farmers were heading toward him . . . an they looked mad.
Kael had seen enough monster movies to know an angry mob when he saw one. There were two people in white riding white horses, and farmers with torches yelling 'Get the creature!' or 'Kill the monster!'. Panicking Kael started to flap his new wings, and with a large gust of wind Kael was air-born.
With two large flaps Kael was higher in the sky then he ever had before. Looking down with eagle-like vision Kael watched as the people below him stared up wide-eyed. The farmers were throwing rocks and what not, but none could reach him at this height. The two people on horse back were following him though, shouting words the Kael couldn't make out.
Turning to the forest Kael flapped as hard as he could. He didn’t know what was happening or why? All he knew was that he had to get away from the people in the field. He didn’t really want to die today, it was a Thursday and he kind of had his heart set on a Friday. He didn’t know he was heading for a dangerous forest that had things much more deadly then a couple of scared farmers, how was he to know . . .
