The small girl turned her head slowly to look up at the sparkling
blue sky that almost seemed to flaunt its cheerfulness in her ashen
face. She dragged herself off the lumpy, still-frozen ground and into
a semblance of an upright position. There was a creek nearby that she
could use to bathe in, or at least have a quick drink before moving
on. Just because the hounds had lost her sent last night didn’t
mean the hunters were gone. Knowing Lord Cirtley, as she did, he
would not stop searching for her until he either found her, or her
corpse. Once she had performed her morning ablutions, she set off to
the west, not knowing exactly where she was going, except that it was
away from home, away from hounds with long teach and sharp claws and
hopefully, away from Lord Cirtley’s reaching arms.
It was nearing the end of her third day on the road when she
finally found a small hollow that she judged to be secure enough to
let her rest for a few hours. She had eaten as many edible mushrooms,
roots and even some late growing berries as she ran, but it had not
been enough to keep her stomach from gnawing incessantly at her
backbone. She had caught a rabbit, once, out of pure luck, but she
hadn’t dared a fire to alert anyone to her whereabouts, so she
had freed the small animal after extracting from it the promise to be
more careful of predators in the future.
The hollow was dry and moderately warm and still had some of the
previous occupant’s nest in the bottom, which afforded a bit of
padding to the hard ground. And although fears of being caught ran
circles in her head, she drifted off into a restful sleep before the
sun had completely lowered its glowing eye from the horizon.
She woke in darkness. It was either late at night or very early in
the morning, and she was at first at a loss as to what ad awakened
her. Then a noise came drifting down to her. A soft scratching at the
earth, as if a deer or some other large animal was attempting to
climb right into her little cave with her. She looked up through the
mouth of the hollow hesitantly and jumped back in fear and surprise,
nearly braining herself on a rock jutting out from the side of the
wall. There was a ghost out there—a specter! Marla had told her
numerous tales about them, before she had died. With their diaphanous
bodies and glowing eyes, they hardly ever left enough of their
victims to identify. She shrank back into the furthest corner of her
supposed-shelter and stared fixedly at the opening of her hollow,
waiting for the inevitable. A glowing face dropped down into her hole
and a horse stared back at her. A horse with blue eyes. And when she
looked into them, she fell, fell deep in to paradise. And when she
would wake again in the true morning, she would know that she needn’t
have a fear, for Kryssa would always be with her, and together no
Lord Cirtley, no slobbering dogs would ever reach her.
By the next afternoon, Kryssa had carried her to the gates of
Haven, passing through the city gates while her rider sat her back
uncomfortably and tried to look as small and inconsequential as
possible while on the back of an enormous white horse. Companion. She
corrected herself silently, and huddled down even further in the fine
saddle Kryssa had come equipped with. Although in truth, no one
seemed to pay her a mind, she felt as though every eye was upon her;
her dirty clothes and bedraggled hair made her feel like a beggar.

I know it ends kind of sharply, I'm in a bit of a rush. I'll post
more as soon as I can!
