Two girls sat quietly at a table, conversing in low tones. The room was dark, lit only by the screen of the first girl’s laptop; its light cast harsh shadows on her young face, and reflected off her glasses.
“Are you sure this will work?” The young woman at the laptop asked, glancing nervously at her partner. “Why?” She asked, “Do you think it’s beyond your abilities?” The second girl stared at the first over her glasses. A devilish smirk appeared on the first’s features. Beyond her abilities? This was the closest thing to a challenge she had had in so long. She was itching to put her skills to use. Not to mention the fun that she would have if their plan succeeded. “Hmph. It’s hardly even a challenge. ” “I know it’s a bit below you, but surely the prize is worth it?” The second shrugged. The first looked at her partner sitting shrouded in darkness. Her features went from somewhat serious to mischievously playful. “Oh, it’s worth it.” She purred. Just imagining it made this plan seem almost do-able. “But you’ll forever be my least favorite person if I get caught by that seven foot scary guy, Nira.” She gave her a warning glare over her glasses. “First of all, my dear Kami, you won’t get caught. You’re much too careful and much too good for the Fowl Estate’s meager security to stop you. Secondly, if you did somehow get caught, there wouldn’t be enough of you left alive to hate me.” Nira pointed out matter-of-factly. “Hmm. Good point.” She shoved her glasses roughly up her nose. “But this could take some time to do. Hacking into a computer system is one thing. A security system, however, you need a physical contact to one of the wires to access the video, so, let’s see…” Kami tapped a finger against her lips in thought. “I’ll get back to ya ‘kay? Once I think about this a bit.” She smiled widely without showing any of her teeth. Then her expression became slightly confused. “Nira?” “Hmm? ” “Why are we talking with the lights off?” Nira stood and walked over to the light switch, a slight smirk on her bespectacled face. “It’s more dramatic.” And flipped on the switch. Light flooded the room, softening the shadows cast by the laptop. The proper forms of both Nira and Kami were properly illuminated. Similar, but as though night and day. Nira’s form was slim and slight in almost every respect. Narrow shoulders, small breasts, slim waist, hips and thighs; you name it, she was small. The only way she was bigger than Kami was that she was slightly taller. Her glasses perched sternly upon her nose, partially obscuring her dark eyes. Her dark hair was just past her shoulders, but was pulled into a severe ponytail centered on the back of her head. Not a hair out of place. And the biggest smile you got out of her was a slight smirk. Nothing more. Kami, on the other hand, was a little more shapely. Though still broader than Nira, her shoulders were somewhat narrow, her breasts a larger A-cup, tapering to a nice waist, rounded hips and ass, with thighs to go with it. A pleasant shape over all. Her glasses were a little too loose, so she had to continually shove them back up her nose. Her yellow-green eyes were always sparkling with what ever mischief she was currently up to. Kami’s barely shoulder length hair was always caught between a deep red and a golden blonde, depending on when she last had a dye job. She simply brushed her hair in the morning and allowed in to do as it pleased, so long as it was not tangled. Kami would laugh at the smallest things and had a bright, easy smile. The whole effect was somewhat aesthetically messy. But though different, they had their similarities. They were both intelligent (though you had to know Kami for a bit to figure that one out), enough so to be able to hack, break into, or steal anything that took their fancy. This wasn’t much. They never did anything unless it posed a challenge. “So,” Nira looked at the laptop over Kami's shoulder, “What do we need to pull this off?” “Need?” Kami pursed her lips in comical seriousness, “Some kind of fiber optic cable, to clip into the security cameras. It would have to be really advanced, or we’ll be noticed. I’ll have to perfect the video loops before then,” she noted to herself. “A near silent mode of transportation, too loud and that Butler fellow will be on our hypothetical tails before you can say, ‘oh, shit.’ And some chloroform or, better yet, a fast acting, strong, injected sedative. A tranquilizer… or something, I’ll leave that and the transportation to you. Leave the rest to me.” She smiled and turned around in her chair to face her partner. “That’s it?” “That’s it.” Nira smirked in satisfaction, “Operation: ‘Kidnap Artemis Fowl’ has officially begun.” When Nira found Kami later that day, she was hardly surprised. The girl was sitting cross-legged on her bed, her work sprawled out all around her, several laptops, networked together, and numerous sheets of scrawled on paper. Also not surprising, was the fact that her friend was wearing nothing but a low-cut tank top and too-small boxer shorts. Her skills never ceased to amaze. Nira was prideful of her skills. And technology was one of them. And yet, even she had to admit Kami’s supreme skills in hacking and all things computer. Nira had yet to find a place Kami couldn’t get her into. As of yet, Kami had secured phone numbers, addresses, locations, blueprints, etc. from the simple to the most well hidden. Hack into “secure” systems around the world with the ease of breathing. No file or anything run by computer, for that matter, was safe from Kami Kuragari. Kami noticed Nira’s presence, and attempted to leave the bed to stand and speak to her. In the process she adequately demonstrated the one reason she needed Nira. She stood on the large bed and began to move to jump off the edge onto the floor, only to trip over some of the numerous cables and crash to the floor. She was unhurt, but she held an expression of utmost annoyance on her face. Where Kami could easily outshine Nira in anything technologically based, Nira had the balance and stealth of a cat, something Kami obviously lacked. One’s weakness was the other’s strength, like pieces of a puzzle, they fit. After Kami had disentangled herself from the mass of wires that had attached themselves to her foot, she sat cross-legged on the floor, looking up at Nira. “What’s up?” She asked with a grin. “How’s it going?” Nira inquired her floor bound friend. Kami cocked her head, “How’s what going?” She asked. Nira scowled, “What do you mean ‘How’s what going?’ You said you were going to get started on the plan!” Hand on hips, Nira glared disapprovingly at her partner. “Oh yeah, that,” her expression turned mischievous, “I hacked into Arty’s computer, and I think I may know where to find that super-special fiber optic cable.” With that she scrambled back up into her workspace, and began typing furiously. Nira couldn’t help but smile slightly at her spacey friend. No one would ever guess this bubbly, playful girl was the world’s most dangerous hacker. “Are you going to come look or what?” Kami beckoned Nira to her computer screen. The words seemed to be encrypted, in a different language. “Can you read it?” Nira cocked a quizzical eyebrow, leaning on Kami’s shoulder a bit. “Yep!” She beamed, “It took me a bit to see the pattern, but get this. Remember when you heard some guy going on about elves, dwarfs, trolls, and such who live underground and have technology years ahead of ours?” Kami was practically bouncing with excitement of some sort. “Yeah, he was drunk or high, that’s all.” “He was right.” Kami’s eyes glowed with excitement and anticipation. “What!?” “It’s all here, not just descriptions, but what sounds like their bible or scripture or the like, and contact info, and all sorts of things.” With a few keystrokes she transformed the encrypted data into recognizable words and images. Nira scanned the page quickly, the more she read, the more she realized. Kami was right. It had to be authentic. Of course, she was rarely wrong about these things. “You know, he could have just made this up to confuse people who manage to hack into his computer.” Nira gave Kami a half cautious look over her glasses. Kami pushed her newly dyed red hair out of her eyes, “Nah. I don’t think so,” the hair flopped back in her eyes again, “And what’s the worst that could happen? We get caught in the early phases. I erase my footprints, shut down the network for a while, buy a new computer and start over.” “Not much gets to you, huh?” “Not a snowball’s chance in Hell?” “Right. So, where are we getting this ‘Oh, so desperately needed’ cable?” Kami’s grin became maniacal; the light reflecting off her glasses hid her eyes from view. “Oh, just a little old centaur named Foaly.” An hour later, miles underground in Haven City a certain centaur typed away at his computer. He was mentally congratulating himself for the genius of his most recent work. He was smiling happily to himself. Just the final bugs to work out. He sighed, he could only think of one person who could truly appreciate his masterwork. The door slammed open and a red haired elf stomped emphatically toward him. She definitely wasn’t that person. “Foaly! I need your help with something!” Holly Short shouted at the centaur, walking over to his desk. “Ah! Holly! Guess what, I just finished the prototype for my latest—.” “Don’t care. Just do a background check on this guy for me will ya?” She tossed a folder full of papers on his desk. Foaly sighed. Would it hurt for her to show a little interest? Even feigned? “Alright, alright, give me a moment.” He reached for his mouse, but the cursor on the screen moved before his hand could touch it. “…the hell?” He cursed softly. Holly saw his expression change. “What is it?” She asked. “Look.” He pointed to the moving cursor on the screen. “What, some kind of hands-free thing?” “I’m not doing it Holly.” He said, his tone serious, “either the computer has developed artificial intelligence or,” he paused, “and this is absolutely ridiculous, mind you,” he hesitated again, “someone has hacked into my system.” Just as he said it, a new window opened up, and made use of his computer’s web cam capabilities. The window showed the face of a young girl in her late teens. Her red hair lay messily about her shoulders and in her eyes. Eyes that blinked mischievously at him from behind a pair of glasses. “Hello. You must be Foaly.” She gave him a friendly wave. “My name is Kami, and I have a favor to ask of you.” She grinned and cocked her head. A mud girl. Foaly was in shock. A mud girl had supposedly hacked into his flawless system. A mud girl… “Did you…” He looked seriously confused, “…hack into my system?” He asked. Not really wanting the answer he somehow knew she was going to give him. She looked at the centaur with a smirk confidently in place. “Of course. It really wasn’t that hard. I found your signature all over Arty’s computer. After that, it was a simple matter of following your footprints.” She paused and looked up thoughtfully. “Or perhaps it would be hoof-prints.” “B-but my security s-system…” Foaly stuttered in shock. His look of dumbfounded consternation would have been funny if the only other person, who might have laughed, namely Holly, wasn’t just as shocked as he was. Kami looked back at him as though he was about to be told something he might find devastating. “Oh. About that. You have some major holes in that, did ya know?” “H-holes?” He managed. “I think you shocked the horsey, Kami.” A voice said from off-screen. It was deeper and more than a little indifferent. Kami scowled at the speaker, “He’s not a horse, Nira, he’s a centaur.” She shook her finger mildly at whoever Nira was. “Yeah. Yeah.” Kami sighed in irritation. But she seemed to suddenly remember she was doing something else and turned her attention brightly to the still-in-shock centaur on her screen. She seemed to speak then stopped, her sharp eyes confused, “What was my point, again?” She scowled inwardly as she attempted to find her derailed train of thought. Nira sighed heavily off screen. “The favor?” She offered. Foaly meanwhile was desperately trying to determine how in Hell this absentminded mud-girl could have hacked into his apparently not-so-perfect system. It was hard to believe she could even form a complete sentence. She seemed to remember what she had wanted to say. “Oh, yeah! Thanks, Nira!” She grinned broadly at the person off-screen. “Anytime.” Nira deadpanned. Kami rolled her eyes, and then smiled at Foaly, “We have a favor to ask of you.” Foaly nearly choked. A favor? She wanted a favor? “What kind of favor?” Holly squeezed her way into the web cam’s range. “Oh, hello. Who’re you?” Kami asked, distracted by the elf’s appearance. “Holly Short. I’m—.” “Oh my gosh!” Kami exclaimed, “I read all about you in Arty’s files.” She quickly shifted gears, adopting a more dignified persona. “We need a fiber optic cable. Not just any cable, one that’s next to impossible to find once placed.” Foaly’s interest was piqued. Now she was speaking his language. But what would she need that for? Pushing Holly back out of the way, he asked, “Why should I? What’s it for?” Kami’s innocent aura all but dissipated. Her eyes, sharp as steel, became bright with something infinitely mischievous. Her smile became slightly feral, calculating. “We’re going to hack into Fowl Manor.” His eyebrows rose. “Fowl Manor? That’s not simple. I’ve tried to, and been caught by Artemis every time.” “This coming from the man who’s system I could hack in my sleep.” “Horse.” Nira interjected. “Centaur.” She corrected without looking at her. “So, you helping?” “Why are you hacking into Fowl Manor?” The centaur asked. This wasn’t something you did as a hobby. Usually. “Well, you see…” “Let me, Kami.” Nira intoned. “’Kay.” Kami reached over and turned the camera to point at the other girl. The girl shown was the picture of boredom and indifference. She was reclining lazily in a chair, her expression condescending and sharp. Irritated. A book entitled ‘Icha Icha Violence’ hung from her hand. Her dark hair pulled back strictly into a ponytail, daring a hair to out of place. She was glaring at him over her glasses with eyes black as coals. “We need access to Fowl Manor’s security system, preferably without detection, in order to be able to kidnap Artemis Fowl Junior. No harm of any serious nature will befall him. He will be returned to his home, eventually. Any questions?” “Yes,” Foaly would barely believe what he was hearing, “What do I get out of this?” There had to be some kind of payment. Some kind of trade. Nira smirked. A cold expression. “A permanent link to the Fowl Manor security network. And if you wish,” the smirk widened into an almost smile, “video of what we’re planning for Mr. Fowl.” Foaly cocked an eyebrow, “And you’re not going to kill him, I did hear that, right?” He gestured as he spoke. “Yes, you heard correctly.” Nira nodded diplomatically. How were those two friends? At least he assumed they were friends from how they spoke to each other. How? When he couldn’t spot any similarities at all? “And what are you going to do to him?” He wasn’t all sure he wanted to know, but the bait was too good to refuse. “We’re going to play with him.” Kami purred from off-camera. The suggestion in her voice was evident. Holly burst into laughter. Foaly attempted to hold in his own laughter, but failed miserably. The mere thought… They continued to laugh at Artemis’ unwitting expense. Once back in control, Foaly was grinning at the screen. “You’re going to kidnap Artemis Fowl and initiate him into the carnal pleasures of life, is that it?” He chuckled. “That’s about right.” Nira answered, “Have we a deal?” She steepled her fingers before her face. “I get permanent access to Fowl security, not to mention potentially embarrassing video of stoic, refined Artemis? And all I have to do is give you one simple fiber optic cable in exchange? You kidding? I’m in!” He stomped all four hooves on the floor in unrestrained excitement and mischief. Holly chuckled off to the side. “It would definitely be fun to see Artemis lose his cool. I’ll deliver it and I want in on this.” “Deal.” Nira agreed. That was that. The plan was set into motion. Soon all would be in place and Artemis’ moans would fill this house. The two girls looked at each other with mirrored expressions on their faces. Excitement.
