Celeste leaned back against the wooden planks of the little red boat that she had managed to clamber aboard, shivvering feircely in her cold, wet clothes. The floodwaters were receeding from Chickentown, and she was now bound to go wherever they were. At least she had emptied the contents of her stomach. As she got her bearings back, at least some of them, she looked twards the horizon in search of land. However there was none to be seen past the waves and the bow of the small boat as it went along rollicking in the sea.
Celeste decided she had no other choice then to let the waters take her, and her tiny red boat, wherever they wished. And with that, she lay down in the bottom of the boat and began to drift off into thought, staring at the twilight sky.It was so odd seeing stars that fit no description that she ahd ever known, that this ocean, for that was undoubtedly what it was, with its salty tang and sea birds and alien fish, could come out of nowhere to swallow chickentown. She remembered watching that huge red warship and its purple sails, the battle and its burning. Why then, was she not unsettled? How could she possibly be managing to drift off into a doze? Well, indignant or not to the strangeness around her, Celeste was soon asleep, lulled by the motion of the alien sea and the cry of night things she had no name for.
When Celeste awoke she was sure it had been hours, but the sky had not gotten a bit darker. No matter where she looked it was nothing but the blues and pinks and purples of twilight. She sat up in the boat and looked around at the gently rolling waves, and then up to the horizon. To her great relief there was an island not far from her place the wide ocean, and she could see the shadows of more land behind it. There was a thick fog shrouding the island, but she could see many lights and hear music and laughter. The sea birds had grown in number and they flitted and swayed in the air around the boat, some diving into the dark water below. She sat and watched them, distracted by thier beauty, untill something entirely more frightening caught her eye. In the water, some sinuous green beast was surfacing twards her boat, one big eye focused right on her. The fading sunlight glittered on its sickly scales as it rocked the boat, perhaps trying to spill her into the sea for dinner. She gasped and drew as far from the thing as she could, clinging to the little boat as the thing rubbed against it like an overaffectionate cat. She felt vaguely insulted by the song and laughter coming from the island and wished there was an oar or something to bat the thing away with. Perhaps if she fought back it would become discouraged and leave? Or, Maybe, that would just make things worse.
She closed her eyes and clung to the side of the little red boat, deciding to trust in the ocean to see her safely to shore. It had taken her this far, didn't it? She was about to give up hope when the thing suddenly decided to submerge, and she soon saw why. Dozens, hundreds of red-hulled boats, from little rowboats like hers to clipper ships and schooners were crowding the water. All were filled with happy, laughing singing people. The people themselves were like nothing she had ever seen, a mixture of human and animal and plant and things she couldn't even describe parading about in defiance of 'reality' as she knew it.
She sat still for a moment as the hull of her little boat scraped the shore. She was content to watch, to take in the sights before her, the strange people, the boats ( why were they all red?) and the vast carnival that apparantly dominated the island. She rose tentatively to her feet and gave herself a little shake. She ahd to get warm soon, and out of these wet clothes. Would 20 dollars get her anything at all here? WHat was the currency? She sighed as she tramped up the beach and into the lanternlight, hugging herself.
She barely had time to dash a wet lock of white blond hair from her face before something collided with her, sending ehr sprawling. Why was everything happening so suddenly? She glanced up at what had knocked her over, or who. A girl who seemed to be about her own age was peering down at her with large dark eyes, attempting to pull a number of tangled baubles up off of her by a gaudy chain, but the more she pulled and the more Celeste tried to free herself, the more tangled up she got.
"Oh, Nerfnow!" She moaned. "We wont be getting anywhere like this!" She added, easily scooping the small, slender girl into her arms and slinging her over her shoulder. "Away we go!" She crowed, shaking her wild, flame-colored hair and starting off at a trot. Celeste stared with wide eyes at the feathers growing from the girl's scalp, the pealescant sheen of her skin.
"Where am I? And more importantly, where are we going?" She asked as calmly as she could manage. Did nothing and noone here appreciate that she liked to take her time? She wanted to see things, look around before she got swept up in anything. Who knew if she'd ever get another chance to?
