Greetings and Meetings
Drizzt scanned the area carefully. He knew that the assassin was still close. He listened, heard a footstep off to the right and swiveled toward the noise. He realized his mistake a moment later when a dagger point was gently pressed against his spine and an arm came around his front, pinning his own left arm to his side.
“Drizzt Do’Urden,” a voice whispered right against his ear, a harsh emphasis on the drow surname.
“Entreri,” Drizzt hissed back. A small chuckle came from the man behind him. The dagger pushed a little closer.
“Any last words?” the assassin asked chillingly.
“Don’t damage this shirt. It’s one of my favorites,” the drow replied calmly. Suddenly, dagger and scimitars hit the ground and Drizzt spun around to face Artemis Entreri.
“Artemis,” Drizzt said as he was pulled against the other man’s body. Entreri leaned down and kissed him passionately.
“Drizzt.” They held each other in that embrace for quite some time until a little cough from behind Entreri announced the arrival of one of Drizzt’s companions. Artemis jumped back, but Drizzt padded the air to show him everything was all right. Regis looked at the two of them, still disbelieving that the relationship had taken such a turn.
“Um, excuse me, gentlemen,” he said, eyebrow raised and a slightly disturbed look on his face. “But the others…” Drizzt nodded and grasped Artemis by the hand, stooping to retrieve the weapons. Artemis took the dagger and replaced it on his belt before slowly and sensually sliding both scimitars into their sheaths. Drizzt squeezed his hand, a seductive smile playing about his lips. Artemis kissed the drow again, pressing his lips against Drizzt’s soft ones, placing feather-light licks all along his mouth. Drizzt pulled back and glanced at Regis who had averted his eyes from the couple.
“Come,” the elf said, giving a tug on his hand. Artemis grinned at him and Drizzt rolled his eyes, pulling Artemis along with him. As the trio rounded the corner of the rock in front of the inn where they would be staying, Drizzt dropped Artemis’ hand. Artemis pouted and stole a kiss, pushing against the elf’s body and squeezing his side. Drizzt pushed him away.
“Go!” he commanded, crossing his arms over his chest. Artemis flashed him a mocking smile and bowed low.
“Of course, anything you say, oh Great and Powerful Ranger Drizzt Do’Urden!” he proclaimed.
“Entreri,” Drizzt replied, giving Artemis a shove. Regis gave the pair another questioning look and shook his head.
“I’m not sure what’s happened to you, Drizzt,” Regis said teasingly as Entreri skittered away to go into the inn through the back. Drizzt chuckled at his friend.
“Love, my little halfling,” he replied. “Love happened to me.” He pulled a thin chain of mithril out from under his shirt and fingered the silver ring dangling from it fondly. Regis smiled and gestured in the direction Entreri had left in.
“Yes, but Artemis Entreri? I just wonder about your taste. Maybe all this sun,” Regis said, gesturing towards the sky, “has boiled your dark elf brains.”
Drizzt smiled and laughed at the light-hearted teasing. He tucked the ring back under his shirt as he and his friend walked into the inn. Bruenor Battlehammer and his adopted daughter, Catti-Bree, sat at a table. Bruenor had a drink in hand and Catti-Bree was eating. They had arrived at the inn the night before and were waiting for Drizzt and Regis to catch up. After greeting their other companions, the elf and the halfling traveled upstairs. Upon arriving early, Bruenor had purchased rooms for the companions. To keep spending low, they only took two rooms. Bruenor and his daughter would take one and Drizzt and Regis were to share the other when they arrived.
As the weary pair reached the upper hallway, they saw a female halfling standing in front of a door across the hall from theirs, flipping a gold coin up and down into her hand. She eyed the pair as they approached and smiled widely. Both Regis and Drizzt stopped to regard her.
“Drizzt Do’Urden,” she said, inclining her head. She winked at Regis. “And Regis, the little halfling jewel-thief,” she continued, a playful edge to her voice. Regis wetted his lips and swallowed noisily. Drizzt turned a knowing grin down on his friend. Sure enough, as the little female turned her attention back to Drizzt, Regis smoothed his hair and straightened his clothes. Drizzt tried not to laugh at his friend’s display.
“I am Rachel,” the halfling announced. Drizzt inclined his head by way of greeting, as there was obviously no point in stating his own name.
“I’m a friend of a friend with a message for Master Do’Urden.” She gave a wicked grin and then moved closer to the dark elf, beckoning him to crouch down, which he did.
“Artemis wishes his husband to join him in his room for a bath and says that he hopes Master Drizzt won’t object to making love before dinner.” Drizzt felt heat rushing to his head as the halfling whispered in his ear, ever slightly embarrassed by Artemis’ straightforwardness. Rachel stood back from the drow and nodded to the door she had been standing in front of.
“If that is acceptable, then this is your room, Drizzt Do’Urden and I will be more than happy to keep your friend company.” Rachel shot another wink Regis’ way, who looked perfectly delighted to accept such a proposal. Drizzt nodded.
Bruenor and Catti-Bree topped the stairs at that moment and made their way to the companions. Rachel leaned back against Entreri’s door again. Catti-Bree shot a questioning look at her friends, who merely shrugged.
“We are goin’ to turn in,” the girl said, thinking no more about the halfling female. “We’ve had a long day with orcs tryin’ to raid the inn, and,” she added, crossing her arms and giving the pair of men a hard look, “you two were late!” Drizzt nodded, not taking the teasing seriously.
“We are going to settle in and then eat before turning in for the night,” he answered. “You two get some sleep and tomorrow we will see if we can finally find the orc hideout around here.” Regis nodded enthusiastically, not really paying attention to the conversation. His eyes were still glued to Rachel. The friends all said their goodnights and Catti-Bree followed her father into their shared room. When the door closed, Drizzt turned to Regis.
“Dinner together, if possible?” he asked. Regis watched the grin widen on Rachel’s face.
“If possible,” he replied. Rachel pushed herself off of the door, took Regis’ hand, and led him to the door to his and Drizzt’s room. Regis looked back at Drizzt and waved with a stupid grin plastered all over his face. Drizzt shook his head, much like his friend had earlier to him and proceeded to Artemis’ room, walking in.
Artemis was sitting on the bed, stripped to the waist, polishing his enchanted dagger. Drizzt shut the door behind him and locked it. Artemis glanced up. Drizzt took a moment to gaze at the assassin. His tanned chest glinted with just a hint of sweat and the well-toned muscles rippled as he put away the dagger and stretched. Drizzt noticed that Artemis wasn’t wearing the chain around his neck and frowned. Artemis paused at the dark elf’s expression and walked to him.
“What’s wrong, love?” he asked softly, putting his hands on Drizzt’s shoulders and kissing the elf’s forehead.
“Where’s your ring?” Drizzt asked, a slight pout on his lips and a note of hurt in his voice. Artemis smiled and pulled Drizzt closer; glad that that was the only reason his husband was upset.
“I took off the chain,” he said. He pushed Drizzt back a little and held up his left hand. The silver ring matching Drizzt’s glinted on his finger. Drizzt smiled.
“I thought maybe you had decided to be enemies again,” he replied playfully. Entreri shook his head.
“Never,” he said, moving Drizzt’s long mane of white hair and pulling the chain over the dark elf’s head. He undid the trick link and slid off the ring.
“Not enemies again,” he said, slipping the band onto Drizzt’s finger. The assassin grinned and slid the finger into his mouth, sucking gently. “Not unless we’re fighting over who gets to be on top.” Drizzt reached up with his other hand and wound his fingers through Artemis’ hair.
“I love you,” he whispered. Artemis slowly pulled the digit out of his mouth, intertwined their fingers, and pressed his lips against his lover’s.
“I love you, too, Drizzt Do’Urden.” Drizzt gave a little growl.
“Entreri,” he said. He lifted the hand holding his. “Remember this?” he asked, wiggling the finger with the ring as best as he could. Artemis chuckled.
“’Drizzt Do’Urden-Entreri’, then,” he relented. “Or, just ‘Drizzt Entreri’, that has a nice ring to it.” Drizzt kissed his cheek and tugged gently on his hair.
“How about ‘Artemis Do’Urden’?” the dark elf asked. Artemis laughed and shook his head.
“Never would I take a drow name. Not even for you, my love.” Drizzt pouted, a pretend look of hurt on his face.
“You don’t love me enough to become part of Daermon N’a’shezbaernon?” Artemis laughed again.
“Never, my love, never.” Drizzt shrugged.
“I don’t blame you.”
