Chapter One
Slowly I emerged from a restless nights sleep. Unwelcome dreams had flooded through my mind as I slept, leaving me with gruesome images of burning newborn vampires and an angry Jacob. Cracking my eyes open, I glanced at the clock on the side table and saw that it was almost eight thirty. Sighing, I rolled over and at once realized that I was alone. Sitting up, I threw a quick glance around my room and saw that I was by myself. Sadness spread through me as the realization that Edward had left me set in. He had told me the night before that he, Alice, and Jasper were going to be going hunting. It must have slipped my mind that he was going to be leaving. Lying back on my pillows, I threw my hand above my head and was surprised that there was a piece of paper folded only a few inches away from my head. Hastily I picked it up and scanned the note; it was written in Edwards’s elegant scrawl.
Dearest Bella,
I’m truly sorry that I wasn’t there to greet you when
you awakened. When it was time to leave I thought
you looked too peaceful to disturb after such a restless
nights sleep. Alice, Jasper, and I are going to be
gone until later this evening. We thought it would be
a good idea if we fed before you spent the weekend
with us. Until I see you again remember that I love
you and please, for my sake, try to be safe.
Your Love,
Edward
I reread the letter and my heart felt like it would explode from the love I felt for Edward. I folded the note and climbed out of bed. After sticking the note in my dresser drawer where I kept everything Edward had given me, I grabbed some clothing and went to take a shower. I had to work at the Newton’s store for a few hours and then I was off to spend some time at the Cullen’s house. Alice had spoken with Charlie about having a slumber party over the weekend. He was hesitant at first, knowing that Edward would be in the same house as well, but Alice reassured him that their parents would be there too and Charlie couldn’t resist Alice’s charm. I was glad to be spending time with the Cullen’s; they were just like family and I hated being away from them for too long.
I didn’t worry about blow drying my hair, I quickly twisted it into a long braid and turned to my clothing. Working at the Newton’s did have its ups. I could wear whatever I wanted as long as it didn’t look too homely and trashy. I slipped on a matching set of satin panties and bra, the same blue that Edward thought looked so nice on me, and then I pulled on a pair of black hip-hugger jeans. Normally I wouldn’t wear hip-huggers but thanks to Alice’s persuasion, and the fact that she bought me a ton of clothing without my permission, I thought it might be nice to wear them. They were cute after all. I picked up a blue long sleeve turtleneck and pulled it over my head. The jeans and shirt looked good by themselves, but I threw on a black hooded zip-up vest to finish the outfit. Last but not least, I slipped on a pair of black two inch heeled boots that zipped up the sides. I did a once over of myself in the mirror and then walked back to my room.
I had already prepared my bag for the weekend. I slung it over my arm and then grabbed my keys from the nightstand. I carefully made my way down the stairs and into the kitchen. I still wasn’t used to walking in any kind of heels, but Alice thought the boots looked adorable and I just couldn’t resist them. I wrote down a quick note to Charlie reminding him that I was going to stay with Alice over the weekend and let him know I had left dinner instructions for him to use as well. Leaving the note on the table, I grabbed a granola bar, my parka, and then headed out the door into the heavily falling rain.
Work went by slowly from lack of customers and Mike didn’t make things any better. When I had shown up, hung my parka up, and put my apron on Mike had stood there and watched my every movement. I ignored him at first, trying to focus on my tasks for the day, but after a while his staring made me crack.
“What are you staring at,” I shot at him grouchily.
“N-nothing, I…you look very pretty today,” he said with a sheepish grin. His face had turned red from the neck up and I shook my head at him in disbelief.
“Hasn’t anybody told you that it’s rude to stare at somebody? Even if its because they look good,” I questioned angrily.
“Whoa, what’s wrong with you today?” Mike asked, looking away from me.
“Nothing, Mike, I’m just in a hurry to get off work; I have plans for this weekend.” I turned away from him to tidy a stack of flyers on my counter.
“Are you spending the weekend with Cullen?” He probed guardedly.
“Yes, as a matter of fact I am, and I’m not just spending time with Edward, either. I’m spending time with his whole family.” I answered snippily.
The rest of the day was spent sweeping up and dealing with the sparse flow of customers. Once six thirty rolled around I folded my apron up and stuck it under the counter, replacing it with my black parka. I walked out into the rain, hood up, and climbed into my old truck, soaked from the short walk. The cab of the truck was cold and all I wanted was to relax in the roar of the heater. Flipping it on I adjusted the vents and then turned on the headlights. As the truck cab got warmer I put it in drive and pulled out of the parking lot, headed for the Cullen’s. I couldn’t wait until I could see Edward and the rest of his family.
I pulled up in front of the large white house and hurried inside. Esme was waiting to greet me beside the door and she quickly scooped me into a loving hug. Letting me go she took my parka and went to put it inside the closet with the rest of the family’s jackets. I smiled and watched her walk away before the TV in the living room caught my attention. The volume was turned way down and I wasn’t surprised to see Emmett stretched out on the couch watching some TV show on Reality TV.
“Bella, are you hungry dear?” Esme asked from beside me. I shook my head with a smile and went to sit on one of the couches in the living room. Emmett looked up and grinned at me playfully.
“Hey, Bella, you’re here early,” he said still grinning at me. “Wasn’t Edward supposed to come and pick you up later?”
“Yeah, but I thought it would be nice to meet him here. I’m guessing that he isn’t back yet.” It wasn’t a statement. If he had already made it home Esme or Emmett would have said something.
“Nope, they probably won’t get back for another hour or so.” He answered looking at the glass clock mounted on a nearby wall before focusing on the television.
Esme sat down beside me and I turned my attention to the show that was playing. My jaw dropped when I realized what Emmett was watching. I giggled and looked over at him, “Are you telling me that you’re a fan of America’s Next Top Model?”
Emmett grinned again and nodded, “It’s Rosie’s fault, she started watching it when the first season aired and I’ve been addicted ever since.”
“Where are Rosalie and Carlisle?” I asked, looked from Esme to Emmett.
“Carlisle is finishing up his shift at the hospital. He should be home pretty soon. Rosalie is somewhere around here…” Esme said thoughtfully.
“I think she’s taking a bubble bath. She said something about needing a little girl time before roughing it.” Emmett notified us absently; the commercials were over and the show was back on. Like a sponge, he was absorbing everything that was being said.
“Haven’t you already seen this episode? This was from the oh-six showing in March.”
“Yeah, but I like watching it anyways. Mr. Jay is absolutely hilarious when he is helping with the shoots.” Emmett claimed just as Mr. Jay came onto the screen to announce what their task for the day would be.
Whenever I was around Edward’s family time seemed to rush by in a blur of speed. Before I knew it, Emmett’s jeep lights bounced through the glass windows of the living room and disappeared around the house to the garage. I hurried off of the couch, as quickly as my heeled boots would allow, and threw open the garage door. Edward was climbing out of the driver’s side door as I made my way toward him. He smiled at me charmingly and rushed forward to wrap me within his cold solid grasp. I breathed in the scent of him, he smelled pleasantly. His thick reddish brown hair was soaked with rain and his clothing smelled like pine trees. Underneath the natural scents he smelt of his own bodily essence and I lost myself in the familiarity of it.
“Did you get a picture of your catch?” Emmett asked from behind us where he was greeting Alice and Jasper.
“Of course not, Emmett,” Edward said icily, leaning away from me to tuck me under his arm.
“Well how are we supposed to believe your tall tales of a great catch?” Emmett asked jokingly. He made his way over to pat Edwards arm in greeting. I giggled at his question and Edward shot me an unhappy look.
“Oh Edward, lighten up. Your brother’s only trying to joke around with you.” Esme declared, giving him a hug as she said it.
“I know what he was doing and it wasn’t funny. He shouldn’t joke like that around Bella.” He stated flatly.
“Bella thought it was funny!” Emmett protested in his own defense. His arm was around Rosalie, who had come down from her bath to greet her siblings. She was dressed in dark form fitting jeans, hiking boots, and a thick gray buttoned up flannel sweater. She’d brushed her blonde hair into a low ponytail and hadn’t bothered with make-up, and she still looked absolutely gorgeous.
“Hi, Rose,” Edward said, still glaring at Emmett. She nodded toward her brother as we walked past them into the house. When we made it to the bottom of the stairs I could hear the garage door opening again.
“So they’re still going hunting tonight?” I asked from beside him as he pulled me up the stairs and down the hall to his room. He simply nodded and threw open his bedroom door and pulled me inside before slamming it again. “What’s the matter?”
He pulled me over to his bed and sank down onto the golden coverlet. He pulled me down on his lap and hugged me close to him. “I don’t want you to think of us as monsters and it seems like every time Emmett gets the chance he is making it seem that way. He doesn’t do it intentionally, and he means well, but it gets to a point where it’s enough.”
“I won’t ever think of you or your family that way. You aren’t monsters at all and I think Emmett tries to act as normal as possible when I’m around. I’m sure he jokes with you when I’m not around.” I said, brushing my lips lightly against his cold face. He smiled gently at me and stood up with me in his arms. Slowly he let my legs slide down his body to stand beside him on the floor.
“I love you, Bella, more than you can know.” He whispered beside my ear.
“Oh, I think I do know and I love you, too.” I whispered back, kissing his cheek. He pulled away from me and sighed heavily.
“I need to go shower, will you wait for me?”
“Of course, Edward, I’ll go downstairs and watch TV with Emmett. Enjoy your shower, sweetie.” I turned to leave and give him some privacy, but he gripped my hand and pulled me around to face him again.
“You look extremely beautiful tonight, love.” He said softly. That he truly thought that took my breath away. He smiled crookedly down at me and gave me another quick kiss. “Wait for me downstairs, I’ll be there as quickly as I can. Tell them not to leave without saying bye.”
I nodded and made my way downstairs. Alice was waiting for me when I reached the bottom landing. Excitement played across her pixie-like features. She took my hand and led me into the living room where Emmett and Rosalie were watching the end of the episode of America’s Next Top Model. Alice sat me down and smiled brilliantly at me.
“You look adorable tonight, Bella, who’s your stylist?” She laughed and nudged me with her elbow.
“You know, her name escapes me right now. But she has a tendency to be rather pushy and insistent.” I commented with a wink. Her eyes brightened at my playful banter.
After a few moments of silence she spoke again, “Jasper and I are going out tonight. He said something about dinner and a movie. I hope you two will be alright here.” A huge smile was stretched across her pale face.
I laughed before I could help myself, “Alice, you’re terrible.”
Esme and Carlisle walked down the stairs clad in their hunting gear. Esme had on a pair of black jeans, a pink flannel, and black boots with pink laces upon her dainty feet. Carlisle had on a pair of blue jeans, a black flannel sweater, and a pair of traditional hiking boots. They looked like there were going to be hiking out in the woods. A good thing if somebody were to stumble upon them while they were out.
“Edward wanted to know if you’ll wait for him before you leave.” I called to them.
Carlisle smiled, “Nice to see you again, Bella. I hope you four will be alright here alone.”
“Everybody keeps saying that, is there something going on that I should know about?” I asked to everybody within hearing range.
“Nothing in particular, its just that we’ve never liked leaving the kids when we go hunting,” Esme patted my shoulder reassuringly.
Esme was a wonderful mother. She treated all of the kids like they were her own and it made my heart swell with pride. Sometime soon she would be my mother and Carlisle would be my father. I would be like one of their very own children.
“Mom, you’ll still have two of us with you.” Emmett protested, “Who needs Alice, Jasper, and Edward when you have Rosie and me?” I glanced at him and he gave me a quick wink.
I turned back to the television show that was coming closely to the end. I had seen this episode before and I absently said, “Danielle Evans wins this cycle.” Tyra Banks announced the name, the screen showed the picture of Danielle, and proved that my prediction was right.
“Oh, Bella, you’ve ruined the ending for me.” Emmett faked an upset about predicting the winner. He turned and fake cried into Rosalie’s shoulder. I picked up a coaster from the coffee table and chucked it at him.
“Give it a rest, you big baby.”
He was about to say something when Edward’s voice drifted into the room, “I wouldn’t say that if I were you, Emmett. That might just get you into trouble with me.”
Emmett tossed a glance over his shoulder and said, “Oh no,” phony fear in his masculine voice.
“Now, boys,” Esme said interrupting something that Edward was about to say. She walked over and gave Edward a hug. “Now, you kids be good. Don’t burn down or play ball in the house. I’ll see you on Sunday.”
The good-byes went around the room until everybody had told everybody else that they would miss them. I got my fair share of hugs from the family, even a small one from Rosalie, and I eagerly wished them well. It was almost eight o’clock before they all climbed into Emmett’s jeep and waved farewell one last time. My heart sank as I watched them leave but I was glad Edward was staying with me.
“Edward, we’re going to get going.” Jasper patted his brother on the arm and pulled Alice toward her bright yellow Porsche.
“How long are you going to be gone?” Edward called after them. He was holding me snugly against his side. The scent of his soap filled my nose distracting me from what they were saying.
“Oh, I don’t know. We’ve taken care of dinner,” Jasper grinned cheekily as he said this, “so now we’re onto the movie.” He said the last as he slid into the passenger seat of Alice’s car. She rarely ever let anybody else drive it and when they did it was only Edward, because he bought it for her, or Jasper, because she loved him enough to share.
We watched as the lights flicked on and Alice backed the car from the garage. As they drove off the door began closing and I turned my attention to Edward. “So, what are we going to do all by ourselves?”
“I had some things planned. I thought we might stay in and enjoy dinner, a movie, and then perhaps fall asleep in each others arms.” He said, pulling me into the house and closing the garage door behind us.
“Ah, two problems, you don’t eat and you don’t sleep.” I claimed mockingly. I glanced at him to see how he reacted to my accusations.
Of course his face never gave away anything and he only chuckled at me as he pulled me toward the kitchen and lifted me up onto the counter. I watched closely as he moved expertly around the kitchen preparing our meal as quickly as it would allow. I knew that he wouldn’t eat any of the food that he was making, but he made enough for the both of us anyways.
I pulled my feet up onto the counter and wrapped my arms around my legs. Lightly I rested my head on my knees and watched as he pulled out two thick boneless skinless chick breasts and began preparing them. In expert motions he rolled the chicken in a mixture of mushroom soup, shredded cheese, sour cream, tomato paste, and a variety of herbs. Edward placed them on a baking sheet and stuck them in the oven. He bustled about the kitchen and prepared the rest of the meal as if it were natural for him. The smell of the chicken wafting from the oven made my mouth water and my stomach growl.
“Bella, what have you eaten today?” Edward questioned fretfully.
I thought about if for a few moments and blushed, “A granola bar at breakfast time.”
Edward’s expression darkened slightly. Scowling he said, “Well at least dinner is almost ready. You really should eat three meals a day, Bella.”
“Like you have room to criticize my eating habits, Edward Cullen. You put off hunting until the last minute just because you don’t want to leave me alone,” I protested mockingly.
“Yes I do put off hunting, because I want to be with you ever moment I can. But Bella, my silly girl, I won’t perish from not eating. You’re human so you’ve clearly got the disadvantage.” He explained while he arranged two table settings. He’d dimmed the lighting for a romantic meal, and he’d lit a few candles. There were also two wine glasses sitting empty beside each plate.
I lifted an eyebrow and smiled at him confidently. I was sure I was winning the argument. “When I don’t eat I’m not risking anyone’s health by my own. You on the other hand are risking far me then I am. And you get rather grumpy and intolerable when you go without feeding, might I add.”
“Touché,” he exclaimed with a laugh. “However, I’d like to remind you that I’m not the only one who gets grumpy and intolerable when I’m hungry.”
I slid down off of the counter and walked to him. His hands were on his hips and a grin still played across his face. I loved it when he was enjoying his time around me, when he wasn’t tense and serious every minute. I wrapped my hands around him and he held me against his cool chest for long minutes. We were both enjoying the feel of me pressed against his solid body. Closing my eyes I relaxed in his embrace, but the moment was short lived. The stove timer went off and he hurried to arrange food on the plates.
“What’s with the wineglasses?” I took a seat across the table from where he now sat watching me. The food looked and smelled delicious but I left it untouched, still waiting for him to answer.
He smiled innocently and said, “I thought that it might be nice to celebrate our engagement and future wedding with a private evening.” He smiled across the table and motioned for me to eat. His words brought back the fact that I still hadn’t told Charlie and Renee about our marital plans. It had been only a week since I had agreed to marry Edward in our meadow. The plans of telling my mom and dad after that went out the window. I lost courage and Edward thought it might be a good idea to wait until I was comfortable.
I took a bite of the chicken and mmmed at the delicious flavor. There honestly wasn’t anything that Edward couldn’t do. I stuffed another bite into my mouth and then washed it down with a little wine.
“I think that, when I go home Sunday, I will tell Charlie and Renee about our engagement. It’s driving me crazy and I have to tell them soon.”
“I’ll come with you. I’m sure Charlie won’t hurt you, but I would like to be there all the same,” Edward stated. The smile had vanished from his face and he stared at me seriously. I nodded my approval and dropped the subject willingly.
During dinner we spoke about many things. Mostly we talked about his family and conversations they had been having about me in my absence. It seemed that I was quite a popular topic. Esme and Carlisle had been talking about my joining the family. It seemed that they were both extremely happy about gaining another daughter. Edward even said that they were planning out the storyline that we would give out later on, when we needed to explain about our family. I smiled and listened intently as he recapped the many conversations and ideas.
The meal finished on a happy note. Edward cleared the dishes and saved the leftovers. When he was finished he took my hand and led me into the living room. There was a stack of movies on top of the television set that he quickly looked through and read off to me. I chose to watch the romantic comedy 50 First Dates. He stuck the DVD into the player and then turned off all of the lights. Grabbing the remotes he sat down and pulled me snugly against his side.
The previews played and he brought his cold lips down on mine for a lusty kiss. My heartbeat sped up and I moaned in his mouth. His tongue played softly across my bottom lip causing me to shiver. Chuckling, he pulled away and pushed play. With Edward’s hand rubbing along my side, arm, and shoulder, I found it very hard to concentrate on the beginning of the movie. Noticing the reaction he had on me he smiled brightly.
Eventually I found myself being pulled into the movie’s sweet story line and as it ended I broke into silent tears. “Bella, love, why on earth are you crying? That was one of the funniest, sweetest movies I’ve seen.” Edward leaned down and kissed the trails my tears had made down my face.
“I’m not crying because I’m upset. The movie is very romantic and funny. I’m just touched by the depth and devotion of the love they shared,” I sniffed quietly.
“Our love is like that. I would do all of that and more just to win your love for all eternity.”
I kissed the hand that I was holding and smiled at him tiredly, “You’ll never need to win my love, and you’ll always have it.” He closed his eyes as I whispered the last in his ear. I felt him shudder against me and then compose his face into something serious.
“Let’s go to bed. You’re very tired and it’s getting late,” he said. Standing, he scooped me up into his arms and hurried up to his room.
