Chapter 1
Alice ran as quickly as she could but the man was still behind her; laughing evilly as he chased her. She knew he could catch her if he wanted to. He was just playing with her. She fought the urge to laugh hysterically. Another man with very pale cold skin had tried to save her from this man behind her. He’d told her where to go for help. He’d told her to seek out this family, the Cullens, and told her that they could help and protect her. He was going to stay behind to keep this guy busy. But her potential killer was still behind her so her protector had failed.
James didn’t run fast. He didn’t have to. He could follow the smell of this human no matter how far she went. He was enjoying this game. The presence of the other vampire had made it a bit more difficult but he eventually killed the man. He had anticipated this being much easier. He had snuck into the asylum where he was going to feed on her but the doctor had already been there. A vampire posing as a doctor and helping a human. Why would any of their kind help a human? They were food and nothing more. The other vampire had even told him that this girl was special. She was important to saving another vampire but who cared about that? James laughed again.
Alice’s blood ran cold as she heard the laughter behind her. She knew he was close. He could close in anytime he wanted. Her eyes went out of focus and she stumbled for a moment. She saw that half a mile up the alley there was a dark black Mercedes with tinted windows and surrounding it were six of the most beautiful people she had ever seen. A blonde girl and a dark haired woman. A blonde man, two dark haired boys and a honey haired boy. She knew if she could get to them she would be safe.
“This is it.” Carlisle said as four of them got out of the Mercedes and the other two climbed out of a silver Volvo. “She should be showing up here soon. Edward, do you hear anything? Jasper, what do you feel?”
“Fear. And Hope.” Jasper said in confusion. “That’s coming from her. She is terrified but she also is hopeful. I don’t know what that means.”
“She knows we are here.” Edward said. “She knows she just needs to make it to us and we will help her escape. The vampire has fallen back. He wants to draw out the game. He doesn’t know of our presence. Carlisle, how does she know of us?”
“I don’t know, Edward, but let’s get ready for action. Edward, Jasper and Esme; take her in the Volvo. Take her to Forks. We will meet up with you as soon as we get everything together. She will need your abilities with feeling and thoughts and Esme she will need your comfort. Edward, is she hurt at all.”
Edward opened up his mind and listened quietly. “No. She’s just exhausted and afraid, but she’s not hurt.”
“Good then she can make it till tomorrow before I examine her.”
Alice skidded around the corner and saw the Mercedes in front of her. She put all her energy into a last burst of speed knowing that this was her last chance to live. A woman grabbed her arm. It was the woman from the vision. “Alice, come with me, quickly. We will get you to a safe place. The others will make sure he doesn’t follow. Edward, let’s go.” She said as she shut the car door behind them. Alice watched out the back window as the others faded away. For the first time in a week she felt safe. She didn’t know why but she did.
“Who are you?” Alice asked quietly. “And how did you know what was happening?”
“Richard called us.” Esme said gently.
“Oh.” Her heart filled with pain. Richard. The man who had saved her had also made sure that she wouldn’t have to make it as far as she’d thought. Instead of going to them, they had come to her. “Richard sent me to find you.”
“He knew you wouldn’t make it.” Esme said. She put her arm around the girl sitting next to her. “He was just trying to make you safe.”
Alice felt guilt wash through her. Richard had died trying to protect her. The man chasing her was something other than human. He had to be. And now she would be endangering these kind people who were helping her. She heard the man driving laugh. She looked at him curiously.
Edward had heard her thoughts. She knew the man following her wasn’t human but she thought they were. She was worried for their lives and feeling guilty. “You have no reason to feel guilty. Richard did what he thought was right. He sensed you would be important to us. As for the thing chasing you; we can handle ourselves. We’ve fought his kind before.”
Alice gasped in shock. “How did you know what I was thinking?”
“I have a gift.” Edward answered simply. “I’m Edward by the way. That is Esme, my mother, and this is my brother Jasper.”
Jasper turned in his seat to look at the young girl in the backseat. She was perhaps 15 or so. She had short brown hair and beautiful brown eyes. Her smell was overpowering to him yet very calming. He felt the panic and exhaustion she was feeling and was proud of how strong she was being. She was so confused. He sent a deep calm her way and heard her heart beat slow with the feeling. He touched her hand, marveling at the heat of it, and sent a wave of deep sleep. She nodded off instantly, resting her head against Esme’s shoulder.
