Hidden in the Snow
Disclaimer: I do not own. I wish I did. And I do not make any money from this. Pure pleasure on this one.
A/N: Totally disregards Dance with the Devil… because I said so. And a note there will be talk about other gods, particularly the Egyptian gods. Not sure if they would exist. I would assume they would be dead gods. But eh who cares? It’s fan fiction after all. Oh and btw… I WISH I owned Zarek *drools*.
Chapter 1
The frozen earth stretched out for miles, an unwelcome change from the warmth of New Orleans. The sun had yet to rise, which only added to the bitter chill in the air. And the bitter attitude of the man stepping from the helicopter. He turned baring his teeth at the other man as he pulled his duffel bag out and headed over to the snow mobile in the small shack a good way away from the pad. He unlocked it examining the machine inside making sure it was still working in the frigid temperatures. He was glad to see that it was indeed. Walking was not a good idea, when he had only a limited about of darkness left and being a crispy Dark Hunter was not on his list of favorites. At least not when he still had people to piss off.
He pulled the mobile out and started it. He paused a moment to place his mp3 player into his pocket as well as his cell phone. He was lucky if the things wouldn’t freeze in a matter of seconds. He secured his bag and then turned to look back at the pilot.
He thought about what he was about to do and grinned,
“Hey Mike?” He called out to the pilot watching the man turn with an angry look, “You should have killed me.” he said right before tossing the grenade under the very expensive piece of machinery. He was full of glee as the other man cursed and dived away. And the glee nearly tripled when he tossed another grenade into the shack to destroy it as he left. It was good to be insane. He heard the man cursing his name but he hardly cared.
He pushed the snowmobile over the frozen snow heading for his home, if one could really call it that. But whatever you called it, it would do for him. He pulled up to what could be called a possible one and half room shack. It had nearly killed him to make it, as no one seemed to bother to care when he was banished here. He slid the snow mobile to a halt staring in confusion at the mobile that sat where he usually placed his. His generator wasn’t running, but that didn’t make him feel any better. He shut down the mobile and stuffed his parka around it, hoping to keep it from freezing. Then he donned his claws and walked towards the door, knowing he didn’t have a lot of time to spare. He pushed it open prepared to attack and he almost did regardless of the fact that his boss was the one sitting in his house with a young woman who looked absolutely annoyed.
“What the hell are you doing here?” he growled at the man who’s hair was a bright red today. The girl was the one who answered,
“Apparently dragging my happy ass out in the cold for some ungrateful bastard.” she was examining her nails as she spoke and he growled at her,
“Zarek, meet Isis. Your squire.” Zarek blinked in confusion for a moment then started laughing. This was some cruel joke. He hadn’t been permitted a squire 900 years ago. He’d been left alone in an unpopulated area, for something he didn’t quite recall doing. He laughed harder as the other man just watched waiting for him to stop,
“So who put you up to this Acheron?” he asked finally an annoyed look replacing that one that had come with the string of laughter, “Because I’d like you to tell them this. Fuck you.” He glared as Acheron sighed and again the girl spoke,
“See Ash. Told you horribly bad idea. He’s an ungrateful little prick.” she didn’t flinch when Zarek launched at her, which was impressive given the extremely limited space. Acheron caught him before he could lay a hand on her,
“Zarek!” he yelled forcing the man back against the door, “This is no joke. Isis is your squire. Now stop bitching and play nice for once!” he growled in a threatening manner. Zarek still shook his head in disbelief,
“Hate to break it to you, but this place isn’t made for two.” he said with a sneer at her. She snorted,
“Nor would I be caught dead living in this… pile of wood. We’d be moving to my place of course. I need a place with a decent bedroom at least.” she said standing and Zarek realized what she was wearing. It was a white linen dress that clung tightly to her. It had simply straps that barely covered her breasts. A headdress went around her head dropping beads through her dark hair. He saw her glare as he continued his examination, frowning at the leather sandals that adorned her feet,
“She won’t even make it a day out here. Look at her! She’s dressed for warm weather not the freezing temperatures.” Not only that. He thought to himself. She was used to pampering. He could tell. And he hated those kinds of people. Those who thought they were better then everyone else deserved to die.
Acheron stepped back and sat on Zarek’s bed, “It was a surprise, for more then just her. But she is important.” he said cryptically. Zarek almost swore the man was as bad as the fates. Cryptic and annoying as hell.
Zarek didn’t see any way out of this. Acheron was being cryptic and what Acheron wanted, he got. Which annoyed him more then the female currently poking around sneering at everything,
He glared and turned his back on Acheron. Which the man accepted as his ok,
“Alright time to move then. Come here Isis.” he demanded and the woman moved to him as soon as he had spoken. Zarek grabbed what he needed and looked at Acheron who clasped his shoulder in his hand. In a flash of blinding light they were gone.
Zarek stared around the new environment more then a little annoyed by the bright colors,
“I’ll collect your mobiles later.” Acheron told Zarek as he walked out a door to Zarek back and into a hall. Zarek immediately followed relieved to see the bed in the corner, he had just been in a spare room and not a living room. Isis made an irritated sound and walked after them pushing past Zarek,
“Follow me.” she told him and he was tempted to ignore her. But Acheron made sure he followed her. She walked ahead and Zarek walked slowly to talk to Acheron,
“Why now?” he asked. He’d never imagine he’d get a squire. Especially after the disaster in New Orleans that forced him to shave his goatee off. He’d liked that look. Acheron didn’t answer him and Zarek glared at him as he followed Isis into another room.
This one was ten times bigger then the last room and was in darker colors than the first. The heavy black curtains blocked out all the sunlight that was no doubt beginning to light up the sky outside. Dark Greens, browns and blacks made up the décor of the room and Zarek was mildly happy with it. He tossed his bag down and turned to find that neither Acheron or Isis were in the room. He frowned and walked into the hall hesitating just on the threshold when he heard Acheron speaking,
“You whine worse then Valerius does,” he said and Zarek sneered at the mention of the other Dark Hunter, “You’ll butt heads but you’ll live. I know you can saw that.” Zarek heard her scoff,
“My seeing has nothing to do with this. I might kill him. Not the other way around. I can see it in his stance. He hates me.” she said and Zarek could have sworn she was upset by that revelation, “I will do my best for you Ash. But that is only because you see it as best. And you trust my sight better then I do. But I do not trust that goddess of yours. At least mine would not mislead her people, and torture them as she has done to not only you but this man.” she sounded angry then and Zarek stepped into the hall causing any reply Acheron had to disappear.
His eyes narrowed and he turned making his way through the halls till he found a set of stairs which he followed down. He passed several windows, all of which were blocking light from entering. For someone who complained so much about having the hunter here, she had prepared this place well. But then again it was probably Acheron who had set it all up.
He found the kitchen with minimal effort and began to rummage through a fully stocked fridge. He pulled out eggs and bacon and turned to begin fixing himself, and reluctantly Isis something to eat. He heard her soft footsteps come into the room and he nearly growled at her when she nudged him out of the way,
“Go. Sit.” she told him, “This is my job after all.” she moved quickly and carefully even as he stared dumbfounded at her. He’d always cooked for himself, and so someone else cooking for him was an odd feeling,
“Zarek of Moesia sit.” she demanded yet again and he finally sat though he wasn’t fond of being ordered around,
“How the hell did you get dragged into this. I realize everyone hates me. So what are you getting out of this?” he asked watching her carefully as she quickly fixed a large breakfast.
“I do not hate you.” Zarek arched a brow at her response and waited for more. But nothing,
“And the rest?” he urged suddenly curious. She sighed in annoyance and began to plate a portion of the food which she dropped in front of him,
“I volunteered because of a vision.” she told him simply, “Well that’s not completely true. I told Ash about it, and no I won’t tell you, and he insisted I come out of my retirement.” Zarek brow arched yet again as she sat with a smaller portion on her own plate, even though there was still plenty sitting in the hot pan.
“Retirement?” she glared at him.
“And Ash told me you would ignore me. Liar. Yes retirement. I was tired of being a squire after thousands of years. My goddess offered me my immortality and I began working for Ash. And his goddess was not pleased by that. Another reason I was in retirement and another reason I’m here. Now eat and be silent.” she began to eat and Zarek watched her. But abruptly he stood taking his food and walking out leaving her with wide shocked eyes.
Zarek had returned to his room, contemplating what she had said. Artemis was involved in all this. And the bitch goddess hated him more then most. Wanted him dead at every turn. So why the hell would she agree to let a him have a squire? He lost his appetite the more he thought about it. So he left the plate on the dresser by the bed and grabbed his bad rummaging through the weapons to the book he had carefully placed so it was the least damaged.
He would ignore her like she thought. He didn’t trust Artemis anymore then Isis had claimed she didn’t.
His sleep came quick and his dreams came as terrible as always. He could still feel the pain. The despair that tore through him. He went from one memory to another cringing in his sleep. He woke with a start and his hand slid around a neck that shouldn’t be there. His eyes were narrowed and he couldn’t focus even as a hand grabbed at his own. He tightened his hand slightly until he realized who he held.
Isis’ eyes were wide in fear as she tried to pull his hand from her neck. He instantly released her and she backed into the dresser coughing heavily and holding her throat. He didn’t apologize, didn’t see the point in it. She shouldn’t have been in there when he was sleeping after all it was her fault. He expected an angry tirade though, but he was shocked when she moved back to him,
“Are you alright?” she asked and he stared blankly at her. She reached a hand out to his face hand ghosting over his forehead. He jumped out of bed ignoring the fact that he was naked. She seemed to be ignoring it as well.
“Calm yourself. I was removing those negative emotions…” He continued to glare at her and she threw up her hands, “Sleep Zarek. You will not be haunted now.” she turned and walked from the room. He watched her go finding himself confused by her. He sat heavily and dropped his head in his hands. He didn’t understand her. She was the only woman he knew who didn’t avoid him. And who had asked if he was ok, after he had attacked her.
There was something that she knew, that he didn’t. It had to be some plot to kill him. Had to be. He told himself before settling back down prepared for the nightmares, that didn’t come.
