It had been three months since I’d spoken to Jacob. Three months since I’d screamed at him to get out of my house. Three months since I’d slammed the door in his face. Three months since he’d come to beg me not to go with the Cullens when they left Forks. “How can you do this to the people who love you, Bella?” he’d said, sitting on the edge of my bed, watching me pack. “I don’t just mean me, either; think of your parents! They’ll spend the rest of their lives thinking that you hated them so much that you ran away!”
“Jake,” I’d snapped, “it’s none of your business. They’ll be okay. Mom’s got a fresh start with her new husband and Dad’s spent most of his life without me so stuff will just go back to normal with him. And you - you’ll survive. You’ll just have to find someone else to make mud pies with.” It was mean and sarcastic and I regretted making fun of the happy childhood times we’d shared as soon as the words left my mouth. His face flickered like he was hurt and he stood up and strode to the door. “No,” he said, turning back. He’d been so close to leaving that his hand was on the knob. “No, Bella, you’re not having the last word on this.” In two steps, his large frame was behind me and his hands were on my shoulders, spinning me around to face him. He looked angry and scared as he looked down hard at me. “Let go, Jake!” I shouted, struggling to get away. He was too strong and his hands only held me tighter. I could feel the heat from his palms through my shirt as I stilled and glared at him. “Bella,” he said, his voice deep and wild. He sounded like he was trying to control himself. “Listen to what I have to say, then I’m leaving. Don’t just let it go in one ear and out the other. I want you to really listen to me.” His hands loosened and I sat down on the bed, my shoulders cooling without his grip. I was pretty pissed with him, but if listening to him for a minute would make him leave, it was a small price. He sighed and looked down at me. His big, dark eyes looked soft and sad. “Do you know what Edward is?” he asked, after a moment. “He’s a vampire!” I spat. What a stupid question. “Edward is a re-animated corpse,” Jacob snarled, clearly disgusted. “He’s dead, Bella, and he’s still walking around. It’s not normal.” “Neither is being a werewolf,” I countered, crossing my arms in front of my chest. Jacob kneeled down in front of me and took one of my hands in his bigger ones. He placed my palm on his chest, over his heart. “Feel that?” he asked. “I may be a werewolf, Bells, but I’m alive. I can go to the diner for steak and potatoes. I can go to the beach with my friends and my skin won’t look like glitter glue. I can live my life, Bells. I can go to college, get married, have kids... I can teach my son how to fix a car. I can worry about my daughter when she’s out on her first date. I can watch them grow up and live their own lives. I can sit my grandchildren on my knee and tell them the stories of our people.” Jacob’s heart was beating harder under my palm. It felt like the vibrations of the drum at the pow-wows. I don’t know why, but I didn’t pull it away. “I can look after my Dad when he gets old and buy my wife one of those rings with all our grandchildren’s birthstones in it for her birthday.” Jacob shut his eyes for a moment and smiled. “And when I die, I’ll be buried with my family. I can do so much more than Edward will ever be able to do, because I don’t plan on being a teenager forever. I want to grow old, Bells. I want my life to end someday, because if you’re immortal, then life means nothing.” I didn’t know what to say. Jacob was touching something deep inside me and it made me angrier than I’d ever been. “And what about your parents?” he asked. “Edward’s been separating you from them since he met you! When was the last time you talked to your mom?” I took my hand away from his chest and crossed my arms again. “I love Edward and he loves me. This is the only way we can be together.” Jacob didn’t understand. “Do you know why he loves you?” Jacob asked, gently. “He loves you because he can smell the life inside you. That’s why vampires enjoy sucking people’s blood out. Some part of them remembers that magical tingle of life and they want to have it inside of them. They can’t exist without taking life from something beautiful... like you, for example.” I opened my mouth to protest, but Jacob cut me off. “You’re pure and wonderful and sweet. It’s no wonder he wants you, Bells. But ask yourself this; will he still love you when he can’t smell your life? Will he still desire you when you’re as cold and as dead as him? Will he still desire you when he can’t covet your body?” Jacob had crossed the line. My sex life (or lack thereof) was none of his fucking business. I stood and shoved him away. He leaned back a little, but he was too solid for me to knock over. “Get out!” I screamed. “You don’t understand!” I stomped over to the window and opened it so he could leave. “You’re right,” he said. “I don’t understand why you’d give up your home, your family, your future, and your precious life to become a living corpse. What are you going to do if you kill someone, Bella? You’ll be hungry forever, living on deer and cow blood. You’ll never feel full again.” He stood and faced me. “You’ll be in high school forever, always moving, always hiding, always hungry, and always cold. Why would you even consider it? Is it just cause he’ll be your first and you think that means he’ll love you forever?” “Get out! Get out! Get out!” I shrieked, shoving him toward the window. He pushed passed me and went to my bedroom door. “I’ll go out the front door like a human being,” he said, coldly. “I wish you well, Bells. I hope you know what you’re doing.” When Edward came that night to take me away with him, I wasn’t there. I didn’t mean to run away from him, it just happened. After Jake left, I got in my truck and went for a drive through town to look at everything one last time. When I got to the far side of town, I decided to drive passed LaPush, too. When I got there, I decided to drive to the county line, then come back. But when I got there I thought I’d drive to the state park. I drove until I was nearly out of gas, then I filled the tank up and drove again, father and farther away. Mile after mile after mile. Alice had to know where I was going, but Edward never came after me. I pulled over at every state line and waited for him, but he never came. He wasn’t waiting for me at my mother’s new house in Florida, either, and it broke my heart into a million little pieces. I stayed with Mom for months and while she didn’t know about the whole vampire thing, she understood the whole heartache thing. Jacob had been right about one thing; Edward had gradually separated me from my mother. It didn’t seem to matter though - she became my Mom again and I was so glad. I hadn’t realised how much I’d missed her. I had a hard time sleeping for weeks, but gradually, the nightmares disappeared and I found myself thinking more and more of LaPush... and of Jake. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
