**Demon Song**
“Oh look!” I muttered, unable to help the sarcasm that laced my voice. “They’ve added two – wait, no THREE houses in the…what has it been, five or six decades since we were here last?”
Alice giggled in the back seat. “Well, Forks is new to me. To us,” she added with a warm glance up at Jasper that I caught in the rearview mirror.
“You know that Esme has always wanted to come back here,” Jasper said, surprising me. He was the quietest of us, but when he said something, you could always tell he meant it. Alice called him “Deep, Still Waters…”
“I know,” I replied begrudgingly. “But still…Forks?”
Forks had never been my favorite place, and here there was the added complication of the Quileutes. As if we needed another complication in our existence. Still, once Esme had made her wishes clear on the matter, none of us had had the heart to argue the decision. Esme was the heart and soul of our odd little family and none of us could bear to hurt her. So we would live in Forks for a few years, until Carlisle’s never changing face would start to cause comment, and then we would move. Hopefully to someplace completely different from Forks.
I sighed, knowing that I was being unreasonably cranky and unable to help it. Lately I had felt restless and out of sorts and if I was completely honest with myself, moving to Forks really had little to do with my foul mood. Over the last few years, I had started to feel as if something was missing. It was hard to feel left out when all around me were couples who seemed infuriatingly and completely happy with each other.
Would I ever find my other half?
I pulled into the parking lot of Forks High School. It didn’t look very inviting, though the almost constant cloud cover would certainly simplify things.
“Don’t be such a grump,” Alice scolded as she slipped out the door, pulling Jasper behind her.
“Do I need to remind you that I’ve already done the junior year of high school a dozen times already?” I asked, my voice pitched so low that only they could hear me.
Alice laughed and stood on her toes to give me a kiss on the cheek. “Then at least the homework will be easy for you,” she said consolingly.
“You’re a very large pain for someone so damned small,” I grumbled and Jasper grinned in agreement before Alice pulled him away.
Jasper had the strained look of a martyr and for the first time I forgot to sulk long enough to remember how difficult this must all still be for him. He was our newest vegetarian and the smell of all these humans, pressed in together so closely, was going to be a challenge for him.
Rosalie and Emmett had already arrived in Rose’s car. Carlisle had urged them r to ride with me, but Rose had merely tossed her hair and picked up her keys. Rose liked making an entrance, especially when we moved someplace new. Admiration was almost as important as blood to her, and I wondered how Emmett put up with her. She seemed like a lot of work to me.
Maybe it was better to be alone, I mused.
I got my schedule, almost groaning as I realized it was practically identical to the schedule I’d had at our last high school. Sometimes I wondered if repeating high school over and over again was our punishment for what we were. It still seemed a high price to pay.
The day proceeded as I expected it to. I turned off my brain and tried to turn off the thoughts of the girls (and a few guys) surrounding me. They admired my face, lusted after my body, but had no clue what they wanted to wrap their arms around. Eventually they would get used to us, and our strange and dangerous appeal would be admired from afar. Our weapons – our physical beauty, our grace, even our voices - drew them closer; our strangeness repelled them, setting off some primitive instinct that made them wary.
They were right to be afraid.
I entered the lunchroom to find Alice, Jasper, Rosalie, and Emmett waiting for me. On the table in front of them were plates filled with food they would break apart and move around, but never actually eat. It was always surprising to me how little the humans noticed. As long as our façade was in place and we appeared to be normal, they accepted that we were.
No wonder they were such easy prey.
A particularly loud sexual fantasy brought my head up. I wanted to know who was thinking it because I wanted to make very sure to avoid her in the future. Her “voice” was annoying and grating, even as her eyes roamed over my face and body. Her eyes flickered to the dark-haired girl beside her as if trying to size up if her friend would be any competition.
Her friend was pale and silent, eating her lunch and smiling at something another girl was saying. Then Miss Sex Fantasy leaned over and whispered in the pale girl’s ear, “Oh. My. God. I want him. I want to tie him up in my bed and do naughty things to him.”
I sighed. Surely she could get more original than that.
The pale girl merely shook her head and I expected her to think something – anything – about what her friend had said. But there was nothing. Absolutely nothing.
How strange.
How maddening.
How…interesting.
I looked at her now with more than idle curiosity. I could hear her voice as she spoke to her other friend, ignoring Miss Sex Fantasy and not even looking over at me.
This was getting more and more interesting by the minute.
Then her eyes finally flickered my way, mere polite interest on her face. Her eyes widened slightly, almost the look a deer gives just before my teeth sink into its throat. A tantalizing blush rose up in her cheeks and for just a moment I was strangely drawn to her. I wanted to press my hand against her throat and feel the pulse that was racing. I almost got to my feet.
I carefully tamped down that feeling. Be careful, I warned myself.
I looked away, still waiting to hear what she was thinking. What she thought of…me.
Still nothing.
I picked up my tray and walked out of the lunchroom, unsatisfied and anxious.
It was going to be a very long day.
~~~~~~
I walked into biology and knew right away that things were not going to get any better.
No, they were going straight to hell on an express train.
She was sitting there, her dark eyes wide and curious. There was only one empty seat. Right by her. Of course. That’s the way my luck was running today. I shouldn’t have been surprised.
I took my book from the teacher and repressed another groan. I had already used this book and it was sadly out of date. I guessed that the budget for Forks High School wasn’t anything to brag about and resigned myself.
I passed by her to move toward my seat and at the same moment, she turned quickly as someone called her name.
“Bella!”
Her hair stirred the air around her. I froze, absolutely unable to move. The sweet, seductive scent of her blood called to me. It sang to me. Every cell in my body, every predatory instinct inside of me, sprang to attention, clamoring to take her, to possess her, to slake the suddenly maddening thirst with the only blood that could satisfy me in that moment.
Hers.
I stopped breathing, knowing that if I took even a single breath I would forget everything Carlisle had taught me. I would forget who I was and simply give into WHAT I was.
I slid into my seat as far away from her as I could get.
And I watched the clock tick slowly toward my release from hell.
