Our home was silent when Sadie walked in the door. She had just returned from an evening out with Bella at our request to get her out of the house to prepare her surprise. We had been waiting for quite sometime in anticipation of her arrival home. Now as we sat waiting in our room we could hear her walking around downstairs, trying to figure out where we were. Our sweet companion’s confusion at the darkness soon led to slight fear. Alice looked to me for reassurance because she could no longer see events to come where our soon to be new lover was concerned, but I knew she could sense the fear beginning to come from the woman downstairs. The concern in her honey eyes was evident, but I merely smiled a knowing smile and caressed her leg tenderly in reassurance. All would be well this evening… I could feel it.
Tonight we would fully consummate our relationship with the woman we had shared our lives with for a year now. We sat waiting in our finest clothes for our sweet Sadie to come to us. The memories began to wash over me as I thought about what tonight meant.
*************************
The accident that brought us all together happened a year ago today. She had moved to Forks a little over a year ago, and was still in high school, even though she was 18. Alice and I were well out of high school by this point in time and moved into our own home less than a mile from Carlisle and Esme‘s house. Both Emmet and Rosalie and Bella and Edward had stayed close and settled into quiet lives in Forks after graduation. Alice and I wanted to do the same. In fact I had decided to follow in my adoptive father’s footsteps and went off to medical school to become a doctor. In this time Alice stayed in Forks and opened a quaint little shop where she sold various knick knacks and priceless items from our various travels each year. I spent those years in medical school learning to control my blood lust and after many difficult nights I finally attained a respectable amount of control. After school I returned home to continue our lives in the sleepy little town. We really could have gone anywhere, but Forks felt like home and after so many years of traveling from one home to the next, it felt nice to stay and “age” in a community. As soon as I came back, I was quickly hired on at the hospital as a doctor along side Carlisle.
Life was nice and easy… boring in all reality, but that was fine with us. We never knew a human would be sent to us and change our lives for good.
She met Alice first. It was a cloudy early fall afternoon when she came to Alice’s shop, looking for work. Alice told me she was surprised because she never had a vision of her, but something in her nagged at her that this girl would be important to the family in some way.
Those two weeks after she started at the shop all Alice could talk about was her. I knew how infatuated Alice could become with new people, but the feelings coming from her were more than just a friendship, and I could also feel a sense of guilt. Some parts of myself were jealous and I merely wondered at how this girl could become special to Alice in such a way and in such a short amount of time.
Unfortunately I was about to find out myself.
I say unfortunately because the way I met our future companion was not in the best of ways. It was about two in the morning and both Carlisle and myself were working at the hospital. It was homecoming week and the ER was always busy. I walked into her room expecting the usual problems that seemed to plague everyone over homecoming week, but was quite surprised when it was something different entirely.
Her mother brought her in, and was quite flustered and angry. She was pacing the room when I entered and immediately stopped when I closed the door. The girl sitting on the table was silent and the fear rolling off of her was stifling. The scent of blood was also enough to break my learned control.
I felt a connection to the girl and only realized it was the same young woman who worked for Alice when I looked at her charts and saw her name. My questions began toward the silent person slumped forward on my examination table, but her mother was quick to stop me.
“Good evening what brings you in toni…” I began but her mother quickly jumped in before I could finish.
“She got into a fight with some girls this evening at the homecoming dance. I rushed her here right away. If we can just get some pain medication I can take care of her and get her home to rest.” Her speech was rushed, and as I watched her mother I could feel the dishonesty and fear practically radiating out of her.
Looking to the young woman on my table it was quite clear her mother was lying. She wasn’t even in a torn dress, she was in torn pajamas. The bruises on her body that I could see weren’t even from another girl, they were clearly from a man. I of course did not have any real knowledge of what happened, but I knew from the fear coming from the girl I wouldn’t find out from her. Her mother was also clearly lying and I knew would never tell the truth.
There was nothing I could do but clean her up and send her home with pain medication to ease her discomfort. As I watched her leave, I felt all of that jealousy toward her flee me, and those feelings Alice had been experiencing began to settle in place instead.
Those feelings only continued to rise over the weeks to follow. It was unfortunate the only way I saw her was in the hospital. It was the fifth time she was in that all of the pieces suddenly fit together. I remember walking her out to the hallway with her mother and the prescription in hand that I saw him for the first time.
I could feel him walking toward us without seeing him and instantly I felt the hunger and rage well within me. It had been so long since I felt that strong of a hatred for someone and I hadn’t even looked at him yet. When I did, the feelings merely intensified.
The fear that rolled over the quiet girl was suffocating and I watched as he approached and kissed her cheek and took hold of the mother’s hand. He never spoke as I finished my instructions to her mother about the medication, but he didn’t need to. That scent that always clung to her own finally had an owner… and as he walked away with his “family” the urge to rip him to pieces was almost too hard to resist.
I told Alice that night what had happened and my suspicions and for the first time in quite sometime I felt a rage coming from my wife that rivaled my own.
That was the first night that we shared our feelings on this sweet girl we really knew nothing about. In all of our years together neither of us had ever looked at another, yet there was something about this girl that pulled us both to her.
Neither of us knew how a relationship with the young woman would even come about, but we were both open to a possibility. Alice nor myself had ever looked at another, but we both knew this girl needed to be part of our small coven and we both knew that it was in a way much more intimate than a friendship, but we had kept it to ourselves. You see, many vampire couples kept an extra with them, often though, it was as a blood bank. We both knew we felt more for this girl than just as a meal. I knew it was just as confusing for Alice as it was for me, however after sharing the mutual attraction we both felt, the feelings of guilt seemed to melt away from us both.
I didn’t see our silent crush for two weeks after the talk Alice and I had, but Alice spent much of her time talking and spending as much time with her as she could at work. She worked almost every night of the week, and since Alice enjoyed her company and liked her as an employee, she allowed her to work on her homework while at work. In that time she tried her best to get her to open up, but speaking of her private life was a painful topic for her and often she would shut down and stop talking all together.
Those two weeks were scary for Alice and myself as well. Alice began seeing visions once more, although they weren’t visions of the future, they were visions of dreams Sadie was having at the exact moment they came to Alice. They were never clear, just full of fear and pain.
The last vision before our lives changed was no dream, but a reality. It was two in the morning and Alice and I were both sharing a night off together for once in quite some time. I had never seen Alice in pain the way she was that night. Her screamed reverberated off the walls and by the time I reached her she was on the floor writhing in agony. It was in the next few seconds that my phone rang and Carlisle was on the line, the sound of sirens loud in the background. The name that fell from his lips rang in my ears and as I hung up my phone Alice became still.
Time seemed to stop and I could hear nothing as she sat up to regard me. She seemed startled at what happened and was speaking to me but her words made no sense. Before I realized what was happening I was out the door with Alice at my heels and we were running through the forest toward the hospital.
We both flew through the doors and Carlisle was there to meet me.
Sadie’s house had caught on fire and she had been inside. Neither her mother nor her father could be found, and from the looks of things they had abandoned her in the house and started the fire. She was badly burnt and would be lucky to live…
********************************
That night flooded my memory as I heard the footsteps of our companion begin up the stairs. She had survived and healed as best her human body would allow, which considering the state she had been in was quite good.
I looked to Alice to see how she was feeling and could tell she was lost in thought as I had been, but soon she regarded me and smiled when she felt my eyes on her.
“Pleasant thoughts my love?” I questioned
A smile merely graced her sweet face and a silent nod was her answer.
A soft voice was heard calling both of our names and as her hand reached the door handle we stood to greet her.
We watched silently as she peered into the room and stared at us both with her tender blue eyes, confused and fearful all at once.
Alice approached her first and pulled her into the room as I sent a soothing comfort through her to dissipate her fears.
With a smile on her face I watched Alice pull Sadie toward me.
She kept her eyes on Alice as she approached and only when I took her hand did she regard me as well.
“Happy anniversary Angel.” I whispered, pulling her trembling hand to my lips, kissing the back of it lovingly.
She turned to Alice questioningly, and in the next moment I watched Alice lean toward her and press her cool lips to Sadie’s.
The fear flowed out of her and was replaced with relief and comfort. Yes… tonight would be what Alice and I had both imagined.
