Jacob walked across the kitchen, and ended up right in front of me in an instant. Our argument had escalated and he realized he was in the wrong. All of our arguments ended this way lately. He was breaking his promise to be there for me and always expressed his jealousy over my hang up on Edward. But this time it was different. The look on his face was different, like he didn’t care anymore.
He touched my cheek, and spoke in Quielette. I assumed it was something romantic and it made me curious. But the fact that he was now moving closer to kissing me, the thought quickly escaped me. His lips were so close and I closed my eyes anticipating the kiss, a kiss that I had fought from having for months. His lips brushed mine softly and I inhaled slowly. The fact that a vampire, his mortal enemy was right outside the door was completely forgotten.
RRRRRRIIIIIIINNNNNNNGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!
The ring of the phone scared me and made me jump slightly. Jacob remained poised and backed away, a gleeful expression on his face. He grabbed the phone and placed it to his ear. He smiled slightly at me, the fact that I had allowed him to get close enough to kiss me apparent on his face.
“Swan residence.” Jacob’s expression changed in an instant. The cheerful glow that had been there was replaced by anger. “He’s not here. He’s planning a funeral.” Jacob slammed the phone down and backed away from me, fury building on his face. “Always in the way.” He mumbled.
“Who was that?” I asked, almost not wanting to hear the answer. I stared as he bit his bottom lip in frustration. Those lips, the ones that I had just been millimeters away from kissing, and the one I couldn’t stop thinking about kissing now. My focus on his lips and the uncomfortable feeling in my abdomen was interrupted by Alice bursting back into the house.
“Bella, its Edward! He thinks you’re dead!” She said, tears would have been in her eyes if vampires cried.
“Who was on the phone, Jacob?” I yelled at him, this time understanding what I feared was true. I was instantly conflicted by my reaction, could I so easily go back to having Edward be my everything? Jacob’s reaction made me understand my conflict was valid.
“Bella, back away.” He said, holding his hand up to me and backing away. I watched as he began to shake, and his chest heaved up and down faster with his accelerated breath. I could see his chest muscles bulged under his shirt. I wondered why I never noticed how truly sexy he was until now. The fact that I was now focusing on that, instead of the situation at hand, didn’t escape me. Alice again interrupted my dirty thoughts of Jacob.
“He’s going to the Volturi. He wants to die too!” She almost said it like she asking me for something.
I looked to her and saw a new Alice, someone who had abandoned me just like her brother had done. And then I looked to Jacob, someone who had done everything in his power to pull me from the darkness I was because of the Cullen’s abandonment. Something inside of me snapped, I could feel my heart change.
I was no longer Bella, the girl who loved a vampire. I was no longer someone so overtaken by a man who abandoned her she forgot how to live. No, I was Bella Swan, the girl who loved a werewolf, her best friend, and the only person who truly saw her soul. I continued to stare at Jacob and I could tell he noticed the change in my eyes and his breathing suddenly calmed. I couldn’t look away from him as I began to talk.
“I’m sorry, Alice. I’m not that girl anymore. I’m not the girl who can travel around the world on vampire adventures.” I turned to her as I finished and saw the desperation on her face.
“Bella, he won’t believe me. He’ll know I’ve seen his plan and he’ll think I’m just trying to stop him. You’re the only one who can stop him.” She begged.
“He left me to die. He didn’t love me enough to keep me alive. I’m sorry but I’m not risking my life for him anymore. I’ve been risking my life this entire time since he left, just to hear his voice for a few seconds. And he did nothing to stop me. He didn’t come running back to Forks to stop me. I’ve finally let go, I’m done.” I stared at her, trying to make her understand how hard it was for me to finally let go. I tried to keep my tears at bay, but looking to her made it hard. She was my friend, my best girl friend, and despite everything I hated to hurt her.
I turned to Jacob who was now completely calm, his breathing normal. He stared deep into my eyes, and I swear I felt him reach my soul. My dads words echoed in my head, ‘love what’s good for you.’ Jacob was good for me. He made me feel superhuman. Being with Edward always made me feel somehow less than everyone, but Jacob always made sure I lived life to the fullest. Our moment was short lived.
“Bella, I understand what Edward did may seem wrong, but can you really let him die?” Alice broke the silence that filled my small kitchen. I finally exhaled, not even realizing I was holding my breath.
“I’m sorry, I really am. As your friend, I am so sorry. But I can’t. It’s too late, he should have come back for me, or he should have never left at all. And I won’t run across the world to Italy, I can’t do that to Charlie, last year almost killed him. I can’t go back; it’s not my life anymore.”
I wanted to elaborate; say that I finally discovered what Charlie, and Jacob, had both known was my destiny. But I held it in, for Alice’s sake. I didn’t want to make it harder on her by expressing my new love for Jacob. I looked to Jacob and could see he understood, and could see a smile forming at the corners of his mouth. I looked to Alice and her expression changed, she understood, she was anything but naïve.
“I understand. I wish you luck, Bella. As I would hope you will wish me now as well.” She nodded and with a quick wisp, she was gone. As I heard my front door close, I collapsed against the counter. Jacob remained where he was, giving me the space he understood I needed.
Several minutes passed in silence and I wondered if I had done the right thing. Jacob shuffled his foot against the floor and it broke my trance. I looked up, following the floor to his foot and then up his body to look into his eyes. He was looking at me, and I wondered if he had been staring at me the whole time.
‘What happens now?’ I thought. I never anticipated the awkward silence that would occur after the showdown with Alice. I knew that Jacob understood what I was telling Alice and if I know Jacob he would want me to tell him, no matter how much he already knew. I suppressed a chuckle as he reminded me of a puppy, oh the irony, always needing positive reassurement.
“So………..” Jacob said, suddenly not sounding like my Jacob. He sounded nervous, unconfident. He was always a rock, almost overly confident sometimes. It was reassuring, in a way, I had the power to make him just as uncomfortable he seemed to always make me. I waited for him to continue but he just stood there, silent, not moving. I decided to give what he wanted, what he deserved.
“So………..” I mocked him, and when he finally looked away from me, I realized he didn’t find it as funny as I did. “Jacob, I’m sorry for the way I have treated you this whole time. You’ve been amazing, everything I needed you to be. I pushed you away but you never left me. You kept your promise, which is all I have ever asked of anyone. And……….” I couldn’t say it. I had only said that one other person in my life and it almost felt too soon to be saying it again.
Jacob finally looked back at me, and I could tell he knew. He knew but he still wasn’t letting me off the hook. He smiled and it reassured me that this was right. Once again, he was my sun, my guiding light.
“I love you, Jacob.” The words flowed more freely than I would have imagined. More easily that they ever did with Edward. Jacob didn’t react; he stood, still as stone, expression not changing. Not the reaction I was expecting. Jacob was always so animated, especially when he got what he wanted.
He finally moved, he walked slowly over to me. I straightened against the counter, suddenly becoming nervous. It seemed like an eternity before he made the six steps across the kitchen, not like earlier where it was a matter of a second. He stopped right in front of me, and I looked up into his face which was several inches above me. I bit my lip, nervously anticipating his next move. He reached his hand up to my face, lightly caressing my cheek. His stare was intense, but he finally smiled. And my nerves ebbed and I exhaled sharply.
“You understand how long I’ve been waiting for you to realize that? I knew you would come around eventually. And I’ve never been more scared of losing you like I was just now. I thought I lost you, but then you realized this is real, this connection between us. God, Bella, you will never know how much I love you. But I am ready to spend forever showing you.” A tear built in the corner of his eye as a few spilled from mine. He brushed them away with his thumb. “Now where were we?” He smiled.
He pulled my face to his until we were again, only millimeters apart. His breath was hot on my lips. The curious feeling in my abdomen returned and I felt like crawling out of my tingling skin. He didn’t move any further and I understood. I had to be the one to seal this. I had to prove this is what I really wanted. Anyone can force someone to kiss them when they don’t want to. But making someone kiss you because they want to means something all together different.
I closed the remaining distance between us, our lips finally touching. They burned with as much intensity as the rest of his skin. They were warm and soft, so unlike the cold, rock hard lips I had become accustom to. The change was nice and I adjusted easily to it. We remained like that, still, not moving, not reacting for a few seconds.
I parted my lips to exhale lightly and Jacob took the opportunity to deepen the kiss. He grabbed my hips and pulled me to him. I snaked my arms around his neck, on hand slithering into his hair. As his tongue ran the length of my bottom lip, seeking entrance, I clutched his hair, knowing I couldn’t hurt him, and pulled him closer. My lips parted, allowing him entrance and we explored each others mouths.
