Author's notes: This is my first step into this Fandom, I'm just testing the waters. When I wrote this back in January, I had only read up to book 5 and seen season 1. I disregarded Daphne from season 2, for now. I'm still working on my Southern slang, so forgive me if the dialogue is not quiet canon. I based Sam's personality on the TV show more then the books. Written for fandom_fridays on Live Journal.
My name is Moria Tempton, and this is my story of how I met Sam Merlotte. I was on my way home from a family business trip in New Orleans when I started getting very tired and hungry. I decided to try and find a place to eat, although it might be tough since it was after ten at night on New Year's Eve. Most small towns shut down early so people could get drunk and celebrate the New Year with family and friends.
I pulled off the main road and entered the town of Bon Temps. It looked closed down for the night. I kept on driving, hoping something would be open; other than a gas station. My hopes were almost dashed until I saw another car pull into a parking lot. I drove by and saw a sign; “Merlotte's Bar and Grill.” I almost wept at the wonderful sight. The parking lot was crowded, but I found a spot. When I walked in, I got a few stares, I was not surprised, I was probably the only person they didn't know here.
I took a seat, at the back, in a booth. I watched the crowd for a bit, it was interesting to observe how people behave when they are among people that they know. I glanced over to the bar and saw a blond haired, blue-eyed man staring back at me. I smiled sweetly at him, he was really cute in my opinion. A perky blonde waitress came up to me to take my order. “Hi, I'm Sookie, your waitress.”
“Hi, Sookie.” I smiled.
“You've never been here before, have you?” she asked me.
“No, I was passing through town and got hungry. This place seemed to be the only one open.” I laughed
She laughed too. “That's because most everyone in town is here. What can I get for you?”
I looked over the menu quickly and decided simple was best. “I'll have a hamburger with some french fries.”
“Anything to drink with that?”
“Just a coke. For now.”
“Okay, I will get that right up for you.” She smiled.
“Thank you.” She left to go and place my order. I don't know why but I instantly liked her. But there was something about her that wasn't quite normal, so to speak, but I shrugged it off.
She came back a few seconds later with my coke. “Thank you,” I said as he placed it on the table.
While I waited for my burger, I was having fun watching everyone around me. Everyone seemed to be having a good time like they didn't have a care in the world. I got a little lonely. I wish I had someone with me. I hated being alone, but that was my life. At least now it was.
I glanced out of the corner of my eyes and saw that blue-eyed man talking to my waitress. He slightly nodded in my direction but she shrugged her shoulders. I figured he wanted to know who I was. Maybe he was the owner?
Despite how busy it was, I didn't have to wait long for my burger to arrive. It was large and I devoured every bite. It was one of the best burgers I have had in a long time.
I sat at my booth for a while, sipping on my coke, and just watching everyone. A few guys that sat down and started up a conversation with me. Some were sweet. Hoyt, was very sweet, but also very nervous he was fidgeting the whole time we were talking, which was about five minutes before some lady, assuming his mother by the way she was looking at me, called him back to her table. Was he really spending New Year's with his mother? I shrugged my shoulders.
I kept my eye on the guy at the bar, he seemed to be staring at me most of the time I was there. I looked at my watch. I was sitting at the booth for more than an hour. It was almost midnight. I figured I should get back on the road and find a hotel before all the drunks decided it was time to drive home. That was all I needed to get in an accident in a strange state.
Sookie came by to pick up my money. “Are you sure you want to leave right now. Sam...” she gestured to the person I was staring at all night, “is going to break out the champagne for the midnight toast.”
I really shouldn't have but when I looked over at Sam, I felt a little twinge when he smiled at me. “I guess I can stay for a little bit longer.” At least I wouldn't ring in the New Year alone this year.
Instead of taking my seat back at the booth, I decided to sit at the bar, just in case someone else came in and needed a booth. Or at least that is what I told myself, really. I wanted to get to know Sam a bit more. Or at least stare at him closer than just catching glimpses and he walked by.
“Hi,” I said to Sam as he smiled at me.
“Would you like another coke?” he asked.
I shook my head no. “Can I get a glass of white wine?”
“Sure.” He swiftly got a glass, I couldn't see the label, but for a bar, I wasn't expecting an expensive label. “You're not from around here?” he smiled at me again. Does he work on that smile?
“How could you tell,” I said with humor.
“I think I would remember your face.” He said sweetly.
I was a little shocked by his comment. I don't consider myself much to look at. I have plain brown hair that I highlighted red to give is some texture. I have been told that my eyes are my best feature. They are large, hazel with long lashes. I've been told that I say a lot with my eyes.
“I'm Sam Merlotte,” he said.
So I was right he is the owner. “Nice to meet you, I'm Moria.” I said with a smile.
“Nice to meet you too.” He smiled at me and left to get someone else a drink. 'Maybe this was a good thing that I stayed,' I thought.
“You're new.” I heard someone say from my left. I smiled, well at least that's one way to break the ice.
“Apparently,” I said with a smile.
“I'm Jason,” he said with a sexy smile. I think he was trying to hit on me? I'm not use to that.
“I'm Moria.” I should have worn a name tag.
“So what brings you to Bon Temps?” He asked leaning up against the bar.
“I was just passing through on my way home when I got hungry.”
“Where is home?”
The question threw me for a second. “Um, I live in Missouri.”
“What? What are you doing way down here?”
“I had business in New Orleans.” I didn't want to get into much detail.
“How come you didn't fly.”
“I have an unnatural fear of flying. I hate it.” He laughed at me, well I was used to that.
“So can I buy you a drink?” he asked all serious.
I was just about to say something when Sookie came up next to Jason. “Jason, would you stop bothering my customer,” she said. He gave her an annoyed look.
I laughed. “Brother and sister?” I asked the two.
“Yeah, how did you know?” Jason asked.
“I have two brother, I recognize the facial expressions you are giving each other.”
He shook his head, left the bar with a beer, and joined his buddies at the pool table.
“Sorry, my brother is a hound,” Sookie said to me.
I laughed out loud. “He was nice, but not my type.”
I heard the pop of a cork, Sam filled up champagne glasses on trays. “Alright everyone, it's almost midnight. Everyone get their glasses ready,” Sam said as he pushed a glass towards me. A group of people made their way towards the bar. Some of the waitresses took trays of champagne filled glasses around to anyone who wanted them. I saw several people pull out noisemakers from their pockets.
“Alright everyone let's countdown!” Sam said.
I laughed at the silliness but was thoroughly enjoying myself.
“10...9...8...7”
Everyone was counting in unison there was no other noise. “6... 5... 4...”
“3...”
“2...”
“... 1 Happy New Year!” Everyone yelled, including me. Noisemakers went off. A few people threw confetti. Several people toasted each other. Then of course, all the kissing began. I received several pecks on the cheeks, from total strangers. I was helplessly shuffled through the crowd as everyone came together as a group. When I finally cleared the group I found a couple kissing, not just a kiss, but the way a New Year's kiss ought to be, bodies pressed together unaware of the huge crowd around them, celebrating the change of a date.
Too bad, it wasn't happening to me! Oh well, maybe another year.
I reclaimed my seat back at the bar a little while later. By then I was accepted into this company and I had several people talk to me all night. It was nice, I'm was glad that I didn't leave earlier like I had wanted to, it turned out to be the best thing I ever did.
*~*~*~
“A pretty woman like you should have gotten a kiss at midnight,” Sam said to me as I was leaving the bar. I stayed longer than I planned, I was the last person to leave but I was having so much fun talking to everyone. It is not often that I am among strangers and can just be myself. I was going to leave and let Sam and his staff clean up, but he asked me to stay. That was very unexpected; we really didn't talk to each other all night.
I shrugged my shoulders, “Well, maybe next year. Besides I did get kissed, lots of times.”
Sam shook his head, “Those were friendly pecks on the cheeks from strangers, not a real kiss.”
“I don't know, Hoyt, seemed he wanted to give me more.” I joked, Hoyt tried to talk me up all night. He was sweet, but definitely not my type.
Sam chuckled, “If you like, I could kiss you?”
Wow, I think that was the first time some asked permission. Was that why he asked me to stay. It was a little awkward. “Do you really go for those silly traditions?”
“No, but I can't see someone as beautiful as you leave without a kiss,” he said to me before he closed the gap between us.
This was how I imagined a New Year's kiss to be, steamy, sultry, and breathtaking. His arm circling my waist, my arms holding on to his neck, our bodies pressed together. I even had the tingling sensation. It had been a long time since I felt this kind of connection. It felt great. I only wish I didn't have to stop.
“Now that was a kiss,” I whispered.
“It doesn't have to be over,” he said as he leaned in again. This time the kiss was not as gentle and needier. If I didn't stop this now I would not leave here tonight. But would that be such a bad thing?
“Sam. I...” I didn't want this to stop. I felt something with him and I didn't want to let it go just yet.
“I know, you need to leave,” he said sadly.
I paused for a second, was he really going to not try to sleep with me? I could tell by his eyes that he wanted me to stay, but he didn't want to pressure me. “I don't want to be alone tonight,” I whispered.
He smiled brightly at me. “Well, if you would like, my trailer is right there, he pointed next to the parking lot. You could come in and we can talk more.”
Like talking, was what I had in mind. “I would like that.” I smiled as he led the way to his home.
I had barely closed the door before he pinned me against it. Panic briefly entered my mind before his lips found mine again. His hand tangled in my hair as his other one snaked up my shirt finding my breast. I moaned. His hands felt so good on my body.
He broke the kiss off, his hands found the edge of my shirt and tossed it over my head. My fingers worked on the buttons of his shirt and slipped it off his shoulders.
I admired his, in my opinion, perfect chest... I started to drool. Sam smiled at me before he closed the gap between us again. As he kissed me, again, his fingers worked on the button and zipper of my jeans, they pooled at my feet and I stepped out of my shoes and jeans, kicking them to the side. I stood there clad only in a light blue lace bra and panties.
“Beautiful and sexy,” he whispered.
He pinned me against the door again, his kisses were more demanding and unrestrained. He cupped my ass and lifted me up. My legs automatically wrapped around his waist. He carried me, bumping things along the way, to the bedroom. We collapsed on the bed together. He quickly shed the rest of his clothes. He climbed on top of me again. I was in pure heaven. He kissed my neck, gently sucking as he worked his way down. He slowly pulled down my bra strap, kissing my shoulder and arm as he did. He was quite affectionate for someone I had just met. He swiftly removed my bra and gently massaged my breasts while taking each nipple into his mouth and lightly biting and sucking. I moaned out his name.
Sam pulled of my panties and hovered over me. “Sam please, I can't wait anymore.”
He chuckled against my neck and inhaled deeply before he swiftly entered me. It felt so wonderful! I wrapped my legs around his hips and moved with him. He moaned my name several times, but didn't say much else, neither did I, we both enjoyed the moment we were in. It had been a long time since I felt this connected with someone and I wanted to make it last.
I started to feel that tingling in my belly and I cried out Sam's name when I tightened around him. I heard him whisper my name right before I passed out from pleasure.
“That was incredible,” I said a few moments later after I floated back down to earth.
Sam wore a smug smile. “Yes it was. What a way to ring in the New Year.”
I laughed, it was such a cliché line, but he was right.
We faced each other. “I'm glad I stopped at your bar tonight. I almost didn't, I was going to keep on driving until I hit Monroe. But I just got really tired and hungry so I stopped at the nearest town and here I am.”
“I'm glad you did. It would have been a boring night if you hadn't.”
I smiled; he was so cute. Something clicked in my mind and the words left my mouth before I could stop them. “You are a shape-shifter, aren't you?” My eyes widened after I said it. I didn't mean to ask that question, if we weren't then he was going to think I am crazy.
Sam's eyes widened also and he looked like he might get angry for a second. I started to panic, I didn't mean to ruin a good night, but that would explain how I feel.
“Yes, I am.” he spoke quietly. “How did you know?” His eyes softened.
Now it was my turn to hesitate, should I tell him, “I'm a shifter also.” There is more to my past but I only tell the people I'm close to my whole story. Sam knew I was holding back, I could see it in his eyes but he didn't ask.
“I never expected another shifter to walk into my bar.” he whispered.
“Well, maybe that is why I was drawn to you, I recognized the shifter in you. Well, that, and your cute butt.”
He laughed at me. “Do you really think it's cute?”
“Oh, yes, I was staring at it all night. Until I sat at the bar, then I got to look at your handsome face.” He smiled at me and leaned in for a kiss, which turned into roaming hands and other round of pure, blissful sex.
In the morning, when we finally woke up, we had fabulous shower sex, but I knew that I was going to have to leave Sam soon. I really didn't want to, but I knew that I couldn't stay.
“Do you really have to leave today?” Sam asked me over breakfast. He took me out to a local diner, because he didn't want to kill me with his cooking. I laughed but agreed.
“I really do need to get back home, but I wish I didn't have to,” I said.
He gave me a sad smile and walked me to my car when we got back to the bar. “If you are ever back in Bon Temps please come back and see me.”
“I will.” It was a promise I intended to keep.
As I drove off, I saw him wave goodbye. My heart ached a little when I saw him turn and walk away. I had all intentions of coming back soon. I felt something with Sam I never felt before and I had no desire to let it go.
*~*~*~
It was two weeks later when I walked back into Merlotte's, I knew I wouldn't be able to say away for long, I just didn't know how Sam was going to react to seeing me again. I wasn't gone that long but he didn't know if I was ever coming back. I didn't see him anywhere, he was probably in his office. I sat down at the bar and waited for him, hoping that he would be happy to see me.
Sookie saw me first, her eyes widened and she came over to give me a small hug. “He is going to be so happy to see you.”
My eyebrows rose. Did she know that for sure? “I hope so. I wasn't sure if coming back was a good idea,” I said weakly, Sam and I haven't even spoken since I left on New Year's Day. Although I was always thinking about him.
I heard his voice in the hallway, just before he entered the bar area, “Sookie, did you...”
His blue eyes locked on mine and widened. He didn't move or blink for that matter. I started to second-guess myself, maybe this wasn't a good idea.
“Moria,” he whispered. I felt Sookie back away from me to give us some sort of privacy.
“Hi, Sam,” I whispered. 'What a lame response' I thought.
“What are you doing here?” I still couldn't tell if he was happy to see me, his face still looked shocked.
“I.. I couldn't stay away, I missed you.”
By now, a few of the patrons grew quiet and I could tell they were eaves-dropping.
“Why don't we talk in my office,” Sam said as he looked around.
I followed him back and the instant the door closed he pinned me to it. “You don't know how happy I am to see you,” he said as his lips crashed with mine.
A sob escaped me as he broke this kiss. “I was so worried that you would be angry at me or just didn't want me to come back.”
“I missed you every day. You didn't give me your phone number so I couldn't call you. Oh hell, I was one week away from hiring a Private Investigator to track you down.”
Good luck with that, I thought. “I knew I was coming back to you, I just had to figure out how.”
“How long are you staying?”
“As long as I need to.” Hopefully a long time I thought, but we shall see what the fates have in store.
“Good, because I don't want you to leave anytime soon.”
I smiled as he went back to kissing me. This New Years is already turning out to be very interesting!
A/N: Nervous author here, not sure how this story came out. Thank you to my beta who also took on a new fandom with me. I did revise before posting so any mistakes are mine. This is part one of a ongoing series. Next in the series will be, “How I Met Moria Tempton.” This will be from Sam's POV.
