So, I got the idea for this story while watching a movie called Lost in Austen, about a girl who ends up switching with Elizabeth Bennet and being stuck in the world of Pride and Prejudice (you should watch it its good). I happen to really dislike Bella. She really annoys me, so I thought it would be fun if an OC switched spots with her and we get to watch the story unfold all over again in a whole new way :)

“RACHEL, YOU’RE GOING TO BE LATE FOR WORK…AGAIN!”
“I’LL BE RIGHT DOWN, MOM! I AM ALMOST DONE WITH THIS CHAPTER!”
Then I heard footsteps coming up the stairs. Just great.
“Rachel, you were lucky your Aunt Becky was able to get you this summer job at the resort. Any money you can save this summer will really help you in college. And yet here you are, late for work because you were reading that silly vampire book for the fiftieth time.”
“Twilight is not just a silly vampire book, Mom. It’s an escape for me, ok?”
“Honey, you work at a resort, how much more of an escape do you need?” she said as she tossed me my work hat.
*sigh*
She just didn’t get it. Twilight seems like so much more to me than just a book. I feel like I know the characters and the places as if I had really been there. As lame as this sounds, its kind of a second home to me. Its where I go at the end of a hard day. It’s gotten pretty bad lately though, I will admit. I have found myself daydreaming about Edward Cullen way more that I should be. I will stare at a smoking hot guy at the pool and wish he was sparkly. I am just worried that no real guy is ever going to match up to my favorite fictional one.
BAM! BAM! BAM!
“DUDE, WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?! I’VE HAD TO COVER FOR YOU FOR THE PAST THIRTY MINUTES!”
Mark was banging on my window. It seems I had been daydreaming in the parking lot.
“Shit, Mark, I’m sorry. I owe you one. Dinner later? Pizza and beer while we watch Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles?” I said, elbowing him with a cheesy grin on my face. Who can resist such charm?
“Oh alright” he said, slinging an arm around me as we walked into the resort. Lucky for me, my best friend Mark also worked at the resort pool. I have known him since we were in kindergarten and we had pretty much been inseparable since. Even our Mom’s are best friends now. Mark and I once tried to free our class hamster, Benny, into “the wild” in second grade but were caught by the janitor. Our moms met while having to talk to the principal. Fortunately for us, the relief at having met another person who had birthed an equally strange kid seemed to outweigh the trouble we were in.
“Well, since you are here now, I’m gonna go on my break ok? Want anything from Subway?”
“I’m good but thanks.”
“Ok, been a pretty slow day so far but call me if you need anything.”
“It’s so cute when you go all Assistant Manager on me, Mark.” He chuckled and flipped me off then I was on my own at the pool. Just me and Orlando’s elite tourists. Joy. At least Mark was right, it was pretty dead so I was in luck. It’s my job to cater to the whim of each guest at the pool, whether they need a towel, another mimosa, a newspaper, whatever they want its my job to get it for them. It’s not a whole lot of fun. There was only one lady in a wide brim had drinking a margarita and she looked like she was doing just fine, so I pulled out my book to read again:
""How old are you?"
"Seventeen" he answered promptly.
"And how long have you been seventeen?"
His lips twitched as he stared at the road, "Awhile", he admitted at last.
"Okay", I smiled, pleased that he was still being honest with me. He stared down at me with watchful eyes, much as he had before when he'd been worried that I would go into shock. I smiled wider in encouragment, and he frowned.
"Don't laugh but how can you come out during the daytime?"
He laughed anyway, "Myth"
"Burned by the sun?"
"Myth"
"Sleeping in coffins"
"Myth", he hesitated for a moment, and a peculiar tone entered his voice. "I can't sleep"
It took me a moment to absorb that, "At all?"
"Never", he said, his voice nearly inaudible. He turned to look at me with a wistful expression. His golden eyes held mine and I lost my train of thought. I stared at him until he looked away.
"You haven't asked me the most important question yet." His voice was hard now and when he looked at me his eyes were cold.
"I blinked, still dazed, "Which one is that?"
"You aren't concerned about my diet?", he asked sarcastically.
"Oh", I murmered, "that"
"Yes that", His voice was bleak, "Don't you want to know if I drink blood?""
CRASH! SPLASH!
I was jolted back to reality by some girl tripping over the leg of a lounge chair, which sent her tumbling back into the pool. I immediately rushed over to her and was waiting at the edge when she swam back up.
“You ok?” I asked giving her a hand out of the pool. She was definitely not our usual guest. She looked to be an average teenager, about my age, pretty, long brown hair. One thing seemed weird about her though, she was dressed in a green plaid winter jacket and long sleeved shirt in the middle of June in Florida. Who does that?
“Yeah, I am okay. Just a klutz.” She said, blushing from the embarrassment of having fallen in the pool. She went to stand up but winced a little. We both looked down as she lifted up the leg of her jeans, she had a big cut where she had run into the lounge chair.
“You wanna come with me?” I asked. “I’ll get you some towels and a first aid kit so we can take care of your cut.”
“Er…yeah…ok…thanks.” This girl seemed really confused, maybe she was on something? Just great. Mark’s gone and I am stuck with a klutzy crackhead. I took her to the ladies’ locker room and told her to have a seat while I went to get the kit. When I came back, she was waiting, intensely looking around at everything.
“Here you go.” I handed her a couple of towels and some gauze, Neosporin, and band aids for her cut.
“Er..thanks.” she said, reaching down to put neosporin on the cut.
“So, what brings you to Villa del Sol?”
“Huh?”
“Well, are you on vacation with your family or something? Are you staying at the resort?”
“Is that what this is, a resort?”
“Uh…yeah.” Why do I always get the crazy ones to deal with?
“Look…I.. uh…I know this will sound really strange but I don’t know where I am. None of this makes any sense to me. All I know what I got lost looking for my first class and ended up in some weird hallway, but when I went through the other door I ended up here. The other door opened into a storage room on the fourth floor and I was just wondering around looking for someone to tell me how to get to my class. I didn’t even realize I was somewhere different until I went outside by the pool”
“Somewhere different?” I asked the girl who was clearly drugged out of her mind.
“Yeah. It is sunny here and warm; it was cold and raining back at the school.”
Okay coo coo for coco puffs, I can play along. “Where is the school? Where did you come from?”
“Washington.”
“Like Washington the state? Not Washington Avenue or something like that?”
“Washington the state.”
“Right. Okay. Well, is there someone we can call for you? I need to get back to the pool, but I can have one of the girls at the front desk call someone for you while you rest here.” Maybe I should tell security about her while I am at it.
“My Dad. Can you try to call my Dad?”
“Of course. Just let me get some info from you.” I took my drink order pad out of my back pocket and asked “What’s your name?”
“Bella.” Ha, of course her name is Bella. She is lost, klutzy and totally fits part of damsel in distress. Of course her name would be Bella. I need to remember to post this story to My Life is Twilight when I get off work.
“Last name?”
“Swan.”
