~Scent~
“You mean you don’t know?” Her smile was sly, as she whispered the words to me, like it was an age old secret.
Of course I didn’t know. I didn’t know anything from back then. They never once told me about it.
I huffed as I looked at her. Her short hair was slightly blowing in the breeze. I could see the mischief etched onto her face. She knew something, and it obviously was something that I didn’t need to know, but the way she was smiling told me she was going to get a kick out of telling me.
I waited for what seemed like hours. But it was only a few minutes, as she thought of the best way to tell me. I swear I could see the wheels turning in her head till finally her soft voice came to my ears.
“Nessie, Your mom and Jake...well they were in love.” I blinked a few times not really believing what I heard, even though I had perfect hearing. “He even tricked your mother into kissing him.” She laughed.
I stopped breathing. How...how could he? My brain was moving way too fast for me to voice my hatred, anger, hurt, and disappointment.
Leah looked at me, feeling the tension in the air. “I…Nessie. That was over 8 years ago. It doesn’t matter anymore.”
She was right. It was a long time ago, but that still didn’t stop the feelings that flooded my heart. I slowly lowered my head into my drawn up knees. My spiral hair had fallen around my arms and legs.
I heard the change in Leah’s breathing. “Come on Nessie. Its not like he doesn’t love you now. He constantly thinks about you. I swear I’m going to gag whenever he shifts.”
That had caught my attention. I slightly lifted my head. “Really?”
I could tell she was trying to be comforting, but her smile was off-set, like she didn’t know how to smile warmly.
“Really.” She nodded her head.
I moved my arms, so that my fingers laced underneath my kneecaps and my long legs stretched out in front of me. My jeans were clinging to me like a second skin. My boots stopped just below my knees, and were a rich brown color that matched the trees around us.
“Do you know where they went?” I didn’t look at her, but I know she heard me.
“Jake? Yeah. They’re tracing after a scent. Apparently it’s like nothing we have come a crossed before. They said it’s a sick burning smell.” She placed a hand under her chin like she was bored. Obviously she had heard this story more than once.
“But isn’t that how we smell to you?” I lifted my head all the way and looked at her, her brown eyes looking into my sea deep green.
“No. You are a sick sweet smell.” She sighed. “This smell is a burning stench, like bleach. The kind of smell you would find in a hospital.” She wrinkled her nose as she turned to look out at the trees.
“Is it really that important that everyone, but you has to go?” I was a little irritated at Jacob for sending a baby sitter for me. Really, I didn’t need to be watched. I was almost 8 years old. Well, in two weeks I would be.
She looked at me as if she could read my mind. “Believe me. I don’t want to be here anymore then you want me to be here. As soon as I hear the call, I’m out of here.”
I silently begged for the call. I wanted to see Jacob so badly, it was eating me from the inside out. I hated when he had to leave for days. It had already been three days since they left. I had never been without him for this long.
I absentmindedly picked up a stick and started to draw in the sand. I was giving up on talking to Leah. She never talked much anyway. Time seemed to creep by and I was about to tell Leah to go home so I could. Then, in the faint distance, I heard it. It was the low cry of a wolf, or maybe several. I couldn’t hear that far away, but Leah’s ears twitched and she turned her head to the sound. A sigh of relief flooded the air.
“Jake wants me to bring you to him.” I just nodded and turned to the sound of the growing howling. Leah phased behind me and took off at a run, not bothering to wait for me.
I easily kept up with her. My heart was pounding, not from the running, but from the excitement to see Jacob. I quickly made it up to Leah and easily kept pace with her as she followed the thoughts from her pack. We finally slowed down and entered a small meadow. It had tall trees that surrounded the small patches of grass and wild flowers that covered the ground. I slowly walked into the middle looking into the trees for any sign of Jacob.
I felt a pair of eyes on me as I looked around. Then a huge, sand colored wolf made his way from the trees. Bigger than any horse or animal I had actually seen, I quickly ran to him. My arms wrapping around his giant muzzle, as I quietly rejoiced in the fact that he was ok. His head did a little bump, moving me a little, trying to get my attention. As I backed off him, I looked into his beautiful eyes.
His wolfy grin made its way onto his giant muzzle and he nodded towards the forest. I gave him a flash of my teeth in a grin, as he ran back and I could hear him phase listening for the human footsteps I knew he would soon make. When he had placed back on his pants and was walking out into the open, I didn’t think. I just ran straight into his arms. I quickly buried my face into his chest breathing in his deep wood scent. His arms quickly took their place of embracing me. I could hear the other wolves that were with him, leave, along with Leah. Obviously, giving us some space, a slight growl left Jacobs lips.
“She didn’t have to say that.” I could barely make out his words, because they were said in a growl more than anything else.
“Say what?” I whispered softly. Not wanting to anger him more then he already was.
“Leah. She told you about me and your mother.” I could feel the pain in his words.
“I asked. It’s not entirely her fault.” I sighed. “I just wish someone would have told me earlier. I wouldn’t have wasted all this time.” I pushed away from his warm chest.
“Wasted time?” He looked confused as he tried to bring me back into his arms.
“I wouldn’t have let myself feel like this if I had known you were in love with my mom.”
I could hear the pain pour out of my words. I knew they were cruel, but I didn’t care in that moment.
“But Renesseme I’m not.” His expression was clouded by his bangs. I couldn’t tell if he was mad at me or just amused.
My fists balled at my sides and my nails were digging into my skin, as I let out a little scowl. “Then why did you kiss her?”
He looked up at me with hurt etched onto his face. “That was a long time ago. I was young and didn’t understand the meaning of love. I just wanted to think I was. I wanted to save your mother. She was so alone, and hurt all the time. I thought if I could convince her to come with me, I would be able to save her. But that was before I started the phase.” He took a deep breath. I had never seen his beautiful features look so distraught. “And if I had been with your mother I would have never met you.” His face changed from the overflowing emotions to love, pure on his features.
I couldn’t help, but feel horrible. I wished in that moment, that I could make it all go away. That I had never brought it up and I wouldn’t have had to pry into his past. I didn’t notice till it was too late, that I was moving towards him, but I didn’t mind. I needed his warm essence to surround me. My arms wrapped tightly around his strong neck, as he wrapped his arms around my slender waist.
I couldn’t tell how long had past, but then again it didn’t matter. I had all the time in the world to spend in his arms.
“Do you understand what I’m saying to you Ness?” I could feel his hold on me tighten, as my nose was buried against his neck and shoulder.
“I don’t know.” I confessed.
His hand moved to my cheek, moving my face from its resting place. “I’m saying that I love you. Not your mother.” His forehead rested against mine, as he tilted a little.
I could feel his warm breath against my lips. I tilted my head more to the right as he tilted left. We had never done it before, but it just kind of happened. When we tilted our heads, our lips grazed each others. I could feel the shock from the touch and I wanted more.
I was about to put just a little bit more pressure onto his lips, when I heard the undeniable crack of a twig. I quickly moved back, as I turned to look at where the source of the sound had come from. Through the trees, in the quite forest, emerged Sam. The gigantic wolf made his way over to us. I could feel the rumble start in Jacob’s chest, as the Alpha made his way to us.
The look in his eyes told me that he was here for more than just a friendly hello. I reluctantly let go of Jacob and took a step back letting the two meet in the middle. They seemed to have a silent conversation with just their looks and glances at each other. When I didn’t expect it, Jacob turned to me, as Sam quickly sprinted off into the woods.
“Come on. I’ll take you home.” He didn’t even look back at me, just grabbed my hand and pulled me in the direction to my house.
We walked in silence, as he practically dragged me home. I didn’t want to go. Why was he doing this? Something must have been up with Sam. Maybe it was more about the scent. Within a matter of minutes, I could see the giant glass pained windows that looked into my family’s house.
I followed him into the house and fell onto the couch, when he let go of my arm. He turned towards me and before he could speak, I asked my question.
I looked at him, angrily, not liking the way my moment was going. “Why did you make me come here? I wasn’t near ready to be going home yet.” I pouted at him, crossing my arms over my chest.
He looked like he was just as angry as I was about our interruption as I was.
“Babe I didn’t want to leave, but Sam said it was urgent and I had to get you back. I have
to leave.” His face turned from angry to sad, as his features softened and he put a hand to my cheek.
I leaned into his touch, my eyes fluttering close, as I let my emotions for him flood my body. It made me tingle as he touched me.
I was about to lean closer into him, but I heard footsteps coming from upstairs. I quickly opened my eyes and watched as my father and mother walked down the steps. My father had a discomforted look on his face and my mother had a look of warning and warmth on hers. I backed away from Jacob, knowing my parents didn’t like when I had close contact alone with him.
“Hi, Bella.” He only nodded to my father, as he spoke to my mother. “I was just brining Nessie back home. Sam found me and told me we’re heading out again. Apparently, the scent has gotten closer. We’re going to try to track it again.” He gave me a hopeful smile, before returning his gaze to my parents.
“Thank you for brining her back. I assume Leah is going on this trip as well. That’s why she didn’t bring Nessie back herself?” My father seemed a little irritated with the fact that Jacob was here and not Leah.
Jacob only nodded and turned his attention back to me. “Don’t worry I’ll be back before you know it.” He gave me his best Jacob smile and then hugged me tight. I tried not to let go of him, but he somehow left my arms, and quickly ran out the open door changing in mid stride. I could see his huge wolf frame leave the front yard as I rushed to the back sliding glass door and watched the massive wolf run till he disappeared from my sight.
I felt a pair of cold arms wrap themselves around my neck and hold me to her chest. I could feel her breath on my ear as she spoke to me. “Don’t worry dear. He will be back. He always comes back.” I could feel her smile against my ear.
I didn’t feel like talking to her. So, I just stared out the glass door. Hoping I would see his bouncing form make its way back to me, but it never came. Eventually, I just sat down were the frame of the door joined to the giant glass door. My back was resting against the wood. I held my knees against my chest as I leaned my head back, resting. Being half human had its downsides, like the need to sleep.
I don’t know how long I was sitting at the glass before my Aunt bounced her pixie-like-self over to where I was sitting and placed a plate in front of me.
“Eat!” Her voice was demanding, and yet, very sweet and caring, as she told me what to do.
I slowly brought up an arm and slowly took a bite of the human food she made. I didn’t concentrate on the taste, because though I could eat it, it still didn’t taste any better than dirt.
After I finished the meal and placed the plate down, I gave a small smile at my Aunt. She gave me one back and took my hand into hers.
“You really miss him that much, don’t you?” Her voice was soft. It was so quiet, because she was trying to make it so my ears were the only ones that heard. I gave her a quick nod. “Well don’t worry. I’m sure he misses you just as much.” She patted my hand and then got up. “Someone is here to see you, as well.”
As she said the words, I looked in the direction she was walking off too. Leah was standing in her human form watching me. After I acknowledged her, she sat down opposite from me. Her back rested against the wood on her side.
“He sent me here to tell you he’s going to be gone for a few more days.” My heart dropped as she told me his words. “I wasn’t doing them any good, so he figured you could use some company.” She made a click noise with her tongue.
“Why he would think that I would want to hang around vampires? I don’t know, but if it’s you, I don’t really mind as much. You don’t smell as bad as the rest of your family does.” In the distance I heard my Aunt Alice and Uncle Emmett let out a strong ‘Hey!’, as if she had just insulted them. Of course, she was playing and they knew that as well.
I could have sworn I saw a small smirk on her lips, as she heard the yell from down the hall. “But anyways, I’m here.” She looked at me and I could see a hint of kindness in her eyes.
The next few days were spent hunting, hiking, and almost anything else Leah could think of to do to keep me busy. She even agreed with Alice to go shopping, and of course, dragged me along for the ride. If she was going to suffer the wrath of Alice, she wasn’t going to do it alone.
After three days of hanging out with Leah, my new found friend decided quite suddenly that it was time for her to sleep. I was staying with my grandparents, Esme and Carlisle, since my parents were off hunting. I went to my father’s old room, which was now my own, when I stayed with my grandparents. My mother’s old bed was left in, and the room was decorated with things from my life, like books, music, pictures. Everything I could ever possibly want was in this room, made for me. What I loved the most about it, though, was the three walls of glass that looked out into the forest. My body suddenly grew hot, and I decided to open the glass window, just a little, so I could feel the breeze blow into my room. I changed into my night attire which was just a worn out shirt that Jacob had left here a while ago. I don’t think he remembered that he left it here. But I loved to wear it. It gave me comfort when he wasn’t here to hold me. All I wore with it was a pair of black booty shorts that hugged my hips and covered very little. But what was the harm in wearing them? It wasn’t like anybody was going to disturb me tonight.
As I settled into bed, I could hear a whisper on the wind of something coming. Thinking nothing of it, I laid my head on my soft pillow and drifted off into a light sleep.
I smiled at him as he trailed his callused fingers down my arms and back up to my cheeks. His breath was hot on my chin, as I felt his weight press lightly onto my body. His lips were ghosting over my chin down my neck and back up to my ear. They were whispering words of love, comfort, and companionship. I couldn’t tell what exactly he was saying word for word, but I knew they were of those three things. My body tingled waiting for his next touch. His fingers brushed the sides of my face and my lips parted panting slightly as I waited for his lips to move from my ear. But his voice started to fade and I could no longer feel his breath on my skin and his body weight was leaving from my own. My eyes fluttered open to see my room. My window was still open, just as I had left it. I scanned the room and realized that I had only been dreaming. He had never been in my room, only in my dreams.
I let out a sigh and pushed myself into a sitting position. The balls of my hands rubbed my eyes, as I pulled my knees to my chest, resting my elbows on them. The feelings I had been keeping inside for the past three days, threatened to come out as I sat and thought of him. The tears that I had been holding back, now crowded my eyes. Still resting my eyes on the balls of my hands, I let them flow. I kept as quiet as I could, so that I didn’t alert any of my highly sound sensitive family. Although they probably already knew, I could feel the hot streaks mark my cheeks. Crying wasn’t a normal thing for me, but just being away from him for this long, just made crying seem like the right thing to do.
I had been so wrapped up in the feelings; I didn’t hear the soft shuffle of footsteps along my floor. Burning arms made their way around my stomach and it took me a minute to realize just what was happening. I could feel the heat of his chest pressed against my back. His gentle puffs of air were touching where my shoulder and neck met. The tears seemed to flow harder when I realized just who it was that was holding me.
“Babe...” His soft voice whispered against my ear. His hands moved from my stomach to my hands, pulling them away from my face. “Shhh, baby. Relax.”
His words brought the realization to me that I really was tensing up. I forced myself to relax and his warmth, which radiated from him, helped with that a lot. His hands moved to my arms and twisted me from my sitting position, and turned my side into his arms. One of his arms went underneath my legs, and pulled them over one of his, having me lay in the cradle of his arms. I can’t explain how right it felt to be in his arms again. It was like tiny little strings connecting our bodies together, when before, they had been broken by our separation from each other. I let out a sigh, as the last of my tears rolled down my cheeks, leaving small, wet trails behind them.
My voice was shaky as I looked up at him. “Jake?” I couldn’t think of anything else to say. The words wouldn’t form. All I could do was utter out his name.
I could see him smile in the darkness, as he leaned down and kissed the top of my forehead. My eyes fluttering closed, with his show of affection. He chuckled and leaned down to whisper into my ear once again.
“Sleep, Nessie. You don’t have to cry anymore. I’ll be here when you wake.” I could feel him shift his body, so that he was lying against the pillows. He pulled my body next to his, cradling me in his arms. The blanket pulled up to my chin, as he let out an even breath, and his hand stroked my hair.
There were so many questions I wanted to ask him. How did the hunting go? What was so important that Sam had to have him right then and there? Why had Leah come back early? My thoughts started to drift, as I was lured back to sleep by the steady rhythm of his beating heart, and the touch of his hand in my hair. I guess the questions could wait till morning...
