It was Bella’s birthday, and even though she swore she didn’t want a party or presents, no one listened to her. Her mother had bought her a scrapbook, and Charlie bought her a camera. Then when she arrived at school, Alice and Edward were waiting to wish her a happy birthday.
Alice had even planned out a birthday party. The Cullens really didn’t celebrate birthdays, so they rather enjoyed living vicariously through Bella. She tried to make excuses to get out of the party, but it was clear that her protests were futile.
Edward drove her home so he could drag her out of the house later if she was still being stubborn. They watched Romeo and Juliet, then Charlie brought pizza home. Charlie wasn’t too fond of Edward since the Phoenix incident, but he still admired Carlisle and really liked Alice, especially since she had helped take care of Bella while she was incapacitated.
“Please try to enjoy yourself,” Edward said as they drove down the road going much slower than Edward would have liked. “Everyone is really excited about this. My uncle even came.”
Bella raised an eyebrow and glared at him. “You have an uncle? You never told me that.”
“Did I forget to mention him?” Edward flashed a dazzling smile. “Well, we don’t really talk about him much, and he isn’t around often anyway.”
“Tell me about him then. It would be rude to keep me in the dark now.”
“I suppose it would,” Edward conceded.
“So, is he your uncle like Carlisle is your father?”
“Yes and no.”
Bella shot him a confused look. “Which is it?”
Edward laughed at her expression. “He’s not really my uncle, of course, but he is Carlisle’s brother; his younger brother. You know how every family has a black sheep? He’s ours.”
“Because he isn’t a vegetarian?” Bella asked, a little worried. She didn’t think Edward would knowingly expose her to any real danger, yet inviting a vampire that drank human blood to her birthday party didn’t seem like the greatest idea.
“That’s part of it. Actually, he calls himself an omnivore. He can and does hunt animals, just not always. Don’t worry,” he reassured her, seeming to anticipate her fear, “it doesn’t seem to faze him much. He’ll be able to resist you.”
“Does he have any special abilities I should know about?” Bella could tell she was going to have to keep asking questions if she was to drag everything out of him.
Edward nodded. “He’s empathic. He can read and influence emotions like Jasper, and he can read minds like me.”
“Wow, two abilities?” Bella asked, surprised. “That’s got to be pretty interesting.”
“It can be,” Edward agreed. “I’m told that when he was human he was a lot like you. He was immune to most abilities, and he smelled rather delicious.”
“Really?” This just kept getting more and more strange. Bella had always thought she was special somehow and now she was being told she wasn’t, that there was someone else like her, and he had been turned.
“Did Carlisle turn him, too, then?”
Edward shook his head. “No, definitely not. I told you, he would never do that to someone who had another choice.”
“Then what happened?”
Edward debated whether or not he should tell her. “Remember when I mentioned the Volturi?” he finally asked.
“Yeah,” Bella nodded with a frown. It reminded her that Edward had been planning to kill himself if anything happened to her.
“Well, after what happened to Carlisle, his brother took over hunting vampires. He was actually pretty good at it—the ones in England, anyway. Rudolfo Volturi took an interest. He probed Carlisle for information about Liam, then went looking for him.”
“And Liam is Carlisle’s brother?” Bella asked, deciding she liked the name.
“Yes. Anyway, Rudolfo found him in a very unfortunate position. Liam had just killed three vampires and he was wounded. Rudolfo was instantly stricken and bit him right then and there. He wanted Liam to be his pet. I’m sure you can imagine how heartbroken Carlisle was when he found out his baby brother had met the very fate Carlisle was trying to protect him from.”
Bella nodded. The more she got to know Carlisle the easier it was to picture the usually passive man being protective of someone he loved. “So what happened?”
“At first Liam seemed to accept his position as a pet. That shocked Carlisle because he knew his brother was anything but subservient. It all became clear, though, when Rudolfo was killed.”
“By Liam? But I thought the Volturi couldn’t be killed.”
“That’s the interesting part. Liam is stronger and faster than your average vampire, possibly because of whatever trait made him like you.” Edward didn’t seem to like telling her that part, fearing that it might make her even more eager to be bitten than she already was.
“He played along only to learn. Then one evening after they were finished…being intimate…Liam turned and viciously ripped Rudolfo to pieces.”
“And the others didn’t do anything? I thought you said you didn’t want to cross them.”
Edward just shrugged. “I guess they kind of felt it was Rudolfo’s fault for turning Liam and trying to force him into servitude. Carlisle grabbed Liam and fled here before they could change their minds. We also think they might be a little afraid of Liam. Besides the two abilities I told you about, he’s still immune to others’ powers. I can’t hear his thoughts either, unless he lets me. Carlisle is the only exception to that. They have some sort of telepathic link. Carlisle thinks it has something to do with their strong familial and emotional bond.”
Bella looked up and realized they were at the house. She groaned when she saw crystal bowls filled with pink rose petals lining the walkway to the door. “Do I have to go in there?” she whined.
“Yes,” Edward laughed. “I told you, everyone is really excited and happy for you. And Uncle Liam came all the way from New York to see you.”
“Is all that stuff you told me about him true?” she asked, wondering if he was just trying to distract her.
“You’ll have to go in and see for yourself.”
Bella got out of the truck, grumbling to herself. She cringed when her hand touched the door handle. “Happy birthday!” the whole family cried when she opened the door.
“I told you I didn’t want anything,” she sighed. Inside, there were more crystal bowls with roses and a table with silver-wrapped presents and a cake.
Then she saw him. Liam came in from the kitchen and Bella stood transfixed, forgetting to breathe for a minute. Edward was her angel, but this blond creature was a god. He resembled Carlisle quite a bit, but his features seemed a bit sharper and more chiseled. His hair was long and tied back in a ponytail. His most striking feature, though, was his eyes. They were an iridescent lime green.
“You must be the birthday girl,” he said, greeting Bella with a warm smile.
“Y-yeah,” Bella stuttered.
With a soft sigh Carlisle reached out and gently turned her cheek away. “Perhaps you should work up to looking at him directly,” he suggested drily.
“Okay,” Bella said, still a bit dazed. She could still see Liam’s likeness reflected in Carlisle’s face, though; they had the same nose, jaw line, and eyebrows.
“Open your presents,” Edward suggested and led her toward the table.
Bella was starting to regain her senses and memory. The first gift she opened was from Emmett and Jasper. The box was empty, but Jasper proudly told her it represented a new car stereo that Emmett had gone out to install. The next present was from Edward. “You didn’t spend any money on me, did you?” She glared at him incredulously.
“Not a dime,” he grinned.
As she moved to open the wrapping paper she felt a sharp sting. “Ouch!” she cried and jerked her finger away. She stared horrified as a drop of blood oozed from the tiny cut.
Several things happened at once. Jasper and Edward lunged for her. Edward reached her first and they crashed into the table, the crystal bowls shattering into a million pieces and cutting Bella’s arms. Jasper was intercepted by Liam and pinned to the floor, struggling wildly and snarling.
Liam bared his teeth right in Jasper’s face and let out a roar that made Bella’s blood freeze in her veins. It must have affected Jasper, too, because his body went limp, but his eyes were still wild.
“Emmett, Rosalie, take Jasper outside,” Carlisle ordered calmly. Liam slid off Jasper while still keeping a close eye on him. Emmett wrapped his arms around his brother and dragged him outside.
“Bella, do you want me to drive you to the hospital or take care of this here?” Carlisle asked, motioning to her arms.
“Here,” Bella answered quickly. If they went to the hospital, Charlie would find out, and that was the last thing Bella needed.
“All right, then.” Carlisle swept her up in his arms and carried her to the kitchen. Bella couldn’t help being amazed at how calm he was while blood was dripping down her arms.
He helped her into a chair. Alice was already there with Carlisle’s bag. She set it down and left abruptly, albeit with an apologetic smile. Edward sat down beside Bella, though she could tell his jaw was clenched and he wasn’t breathing. “You don’t have to be a hero, you know,” she said, urging him to leave.
“No, I don’t want to leave you.”
“Actually, you should probably go talk to Jasper,” Carlisle said while digging through his bag. “I’m sure he feels horrible, and he’ll probably only listen to you.”
“All right.” Edward reluctantly rose from his seat and headed outside.
“Liam, come help me,” Carlisle called.
Liam entered the room and Carlisle handed him a pair of tweezers. “I need you to clean out all this glass while I stitch up this gash.”
Bella turned her head so she wasn’t looking at Liam, but she could almost feel the funny face he made as he picked up a bowl and sat in the chair Edward had vacated. “I’m sorry,” she apologized.
“For what?” Carlisle smiled softly. “It wasn’t your fault. Don’t worry about it.”
“Yeah, but these things tend to happen to me a lot.”
“Like my brother said, you didn’t do it on purpose,” Liam chimed in.
Bella went quiet and listened to the pings of the glass shards hitting the bowl. It was amazing how fast Liam was cleaning them out. When she risked a quick glance at him, he seemed just as relaxed as Carlisle. “How does this not bother you?” she asked.
“Who, me?” Liam asked.
Bella nodded. “Edward told me you call yourself an omnivore.”
Carlisle’s jaw tightened for a split second. It was clear he didn’t condone some of his brother’s actions. Liam shrugged. “It just doesn’t. I’m not in hunting mode right now.”
“My brother is an enigma,” Carlisle commented. “I’ve known him since the day he was born, and I still haven’t figured out what makes him tick.” He patted her hand gently. “There. All done.”
“That was fast,” Bella said as she looked down at her stitched arm in amazement.
Carlisle chuckled and pulled out some gauze while Liam got a damp cloth and started to clean the dried blood off her skin. In no time her wound was bandaged and she was good to go. “Thanks,” Bella mumbled and went to find Edward.
Liam and Carlisle exchanged a quick glance. They both knew this was going to change everything; they just weren’t sure how much. “I don’t know how you do it,” Carlisle said as he got up to put his things away.
“I live alone,” Liam answered truthfully and headed back to the living room. The comment may have hurt his brother, but it was true. If it had been just Edward there wouldn’t be a problem.
Esme was cleaning the blood off the carpet with bleach, and Alice had taken Bella to find her a shirt that wasn’t covered in blood. Then Bella said her goodbyes and left with Edward, who had gathered up the rest of the presents.
Jasper came back inside when all traces of blood had been removed. His expression was blank, but he was obviously upset. Liam gently took his hand and gave him a soft, understanding smile. “Accidents happen. Don’t beat yourself up.”
Nothing more was said for the rest of the evening. They all knew how Edward felt about things. He was worried that he was putting Bella in danger, and this last incident would only prove to him that he was. He’d almost left her after what happened with James, but she’d talked him out of it. They could only hope she’d be able to talk him out of it this time, too.

A/N: Yep, another story. My muse is finicky, I know. I do intend to finish all my stories, I just have to figure out how to deal with this damned muse’s ADD.
So, love it? Hate it? I’m going to follow along with the books again, but from another perspective, and I added my OC to shake things up a bit. *puts a fresh tray of cookies in the review room*
