A Little Fall of Rain By: IndigoHaze
Buckets of rain splashed upon the windows and the light of the stars glimmered in the river that the cobblestone street had become. Somehow, rather than the bleakness a soggy French slum could gather, it was at once surreal and spectacular. Eponine did her best to avoid the streams, but the torrents were still coming from overhead and even her knowledge of the city couldn’t keep her dry. Even that failed to sour her mood. Frankly, it couldn’t worsen any further. His message was in her coat pocket and she felt its weight in her chest. Don’t you open it, ‘Ponine, he had said. Oui, Monsieur. She had answered in a voice that didn’t highlight her mockery. Confusion distorted his features, but at last he nodded and he had embraced her for the first time in life. It would have been enough. Perhaps it would always be enough, but then she had disobeyed exactly as she had planned.
Dearest Cosette,
I regret to inform you that I shan’t return to you. There is no morning for the Revolution, but you must know that you were the best of my life. I wish that I had followed you, but if I fall for my country, know that you have the entirety of my love.Love,
MariusWould it be enough for the prissy miss? No, it would not. She would cry and beg and plead and this letter would do her no justice. That was how ‘Ponine saw it and it was what she carried back to the Barricade. If she would not come herself, then Marius would find comfort somewhere. She knew she wasn’t smart enough or strong enough to drag him away; the men would have her before she could get him a foot. Still, there was something she could give.
Were she to have delivered the letter and returned, the enemy would be prepared. As it was, they were barely able to raise their rifles before she was down the Barricade and out of sight. “Good God, have you no fear? Have you seen my beloved?” Marius called as she descended, rising to his feet. “Took the letter like you said, met her father at the door…” She approached Marius with a frown and touched his shoulder. “I don’t think you should stand anymore.” He felt his legs tremble and the world spun beneath him. Whether it was nerves or having his last business done, he didn’t know. “A bed for him?” Asked Eponine. “None,” Enjorlas said with a slow shake of his head. His eyes came from the ground and found hers. He was ready to send her away, but his heart was out of it. “No beds and no graves.” The phrase might have come with fervor once, but the fight was gone. He looked like a wounded boy. She hated to see it in him. “Come on,” She pulled on Marius’s arm and he followed hesitantly. “Where are we going?” He asked. “Just around the corner,” She said. Marius turned his eyes to Enjorlas, but he had already picked up his interest in the floor. Marius followed reluctantly and, when they were ‘just around the corner,’ he spoke up. “’Ponine, what is this?” “I read your letter,” She said tactlessly. His eyes widened and anger flooded in from nothingness. “I trusted you,” He began, but she silenced him with a kiss. It was her first and only move. He tried to pull away, but she felt it and pinned him against the wall, her breasts pressing against his chest through her thick coat. Despite the cold, her body was warm. His fingers were inexperienced, but somehow they understood their nature and found a place at her hips, holding her close. It was only when she was sure he wouldn’t try to argue that she pulled back. His breathing was heavy and she saw some color on his cheeks. “You don’t get to die here,” She said. He turned his head from her, but she grabbed it by the chin and jerked it back to hers. “You hear me, Schoolboy?” “That’s all I am,” He said, feeling the numbness of approaching sobs come to his face. “That’s what we all are. Boys. Stupid rich boys who thought-“ “I don’t care!” Eponine nearly shouted. “I don’t give a shit about your words, Monsieur.” The mix of the proper address and swear was entirely her and he would have laughed any other time. “You’re a good man. That’s more than I can say about most of the flea-ridden dogs in this town and damned if it’s any better in Paris. Money doesn’t make you good any more than guns make you right.” “You really could have been a student too,” Marius said, repeating the old words back to her. Somehow, rather than the funny way they sounded come from her, however, it was at once tragic and disturbing. He shut his eyes and felt a slap at his cheek. “Don’t you fall asleep when I’m talking,” She said. “You can’t die here, prissy miss or not.” It wasn’t the first time she called her so, but Marius smiled a little at the title. “I couldn’t sleep if I tried.” He confessed. “Not after-“ She put a finger to his lips. “Take care of him, won’t you?” “What?” Marius frowned. “That’s what she asked me. I told her I would and Eponine is no liar, Monsieur.” She pulled back from him just a little and the radiant heat from her body left him. Somehow, losing the warmth of an old friend can make a man feel more alone than anything. She dropped her fingers to her buttons and began to undo them one by one. “What are you doing?” “Hush-a-bye,” She said, unthinking. It was a relic of the past. It seemed it was the night for such things. In another moment, the buttons were all undone and she shed the coat, revealing the ratty stitches that counted as her daily wear. Under the rain, however, the clothing clung to her body in a way that made Marius’s face burn. He looked away and Eponine laughed. “Are you shy, Monsieur?” “Marius,” He said, rubbing his nose. “Why don’t you ever call me Marius?” “Are you shy, Monsieur Marius?” She asked, putting her weight on one leg and placing her hand on her hip. “What’s this about?” He asked, changing the subject just a little. “You’ll catch your death.” “The water can’t hurt me,” She said, her body dripping as the remnants of the storm dripped down from the sky. He turned to say something and noticed that she wasn’t quite finished. Her fingers were undoing the buttons on her shirt. He turned maroon and stammered, but the garment was off before he could finish and, as she dropped it to the stone floor, he noted she wore no undergarments. Her bosom was fair and exquisite in a way her clothing scarcely indicated. Even through her heavy coat, he could tell how endowed she was when he had hugged her and now he felt all of his sensibilities draining. “Eponine-!” He hissed. “Careful, Monsieur, you don’t want to call them over just yet, do you?” His mind raced. His eyes shot back to the corner and he picked up her clothes, dragging her another few feet. There was no cover, but at least they could be further. “Put this on!” He said, handing the clothes to her. She laughed. It wasn’t the girlish laugh he knew from Cosette, but rather a hearty laugh that seemed to come from her belly (which, he noted, was smooth and shapely). She refused to take the clothes and he stood there gaping. “What’s wrong with you?” “Wrong?” She frowned, looking down at her body. “Usually, I get nothing but compliments,” “That isn’t what I mean,” He sighed. He felt the heat from his face and he wondered faintly if he was feverish. “Oh, so you like what you see?” She asked, stepping forward. He took a step back, but she continued to move forward until she had backed him against the wall. She batted the bundle of clothes to the floor and pressed her lips to his again. This time he could feel every bit of softness and heat. He felt the hardness of her nipples and the supple flesh of her breasts yielding to the pressure between them. He felt lust burst through the wall of nerves and, after a moment of extra hesitation, his hands found her hips once more. Somehow, even the sensation of touching her flesh was intoxicating. No woman showed flesh unless she was willing to sell it and he had never gotten anywhere with Cosette. It was too much for his senses and he prayed she would never get word. It wasn’t long before Eponine drew his fingers up her stomach and to her breasts. She pulled back just enough to allow him to experiment. He held her breasts in his fingers, their considerable weight forcing his trousers to tighten in a way he felt obscene. The thought crossed his mind and he felt a smile on his lips. She pulled back, earning a groan from him. She smiled. “Now, this is no fair,” She said, wetting her lips as if the rain hadn’t done it for her. Marius didn’t understand and she gestured to his clothes. “I’ll finish if you do,” She hooked her thumbs into her trousers. Marius looked to the corner they had turned, amazed to see no one came to look for him. Could it be that they knew…? He was horrified to think it, but it was the only explanation. He doubted they would really judge him for it. Just as he was starting to descend into his thoughts, he felt his fingers drawn to her flesh once more. He looked down and flushed, dropping his hand. “Eponine, I can’t-“ She pushed forward, pinning him to the wall for the third time. “Can’t?” She asked, her fingers touching his chest. “Monsieur, if I’m not pretty enough,” She batted her eyelashes playfully. “That isn’t it,” He said, shaking his head. He felt a kiss on his neck and a whisper in his ear. “I know.” Breathy, warm. A tingle ran up his spine as her fingers fell to the front of his trousers. “’Ponine,” He gasped as she began to massage him. It was a bolder move than he thought she was capable. “Give me this,” She said, her fingers gripping through his clothing. “Just one night before you forget about me.” He felt his heart drop into his stomach and his fingers fell to hers, pulling her hand from him. He touched her cheek. “’Ponine…” “I’m not smart like you,” She wanted to pull away from her shame, but she couldn’t bring herself to separate from his fingers. He embraced her and she dropped her head to his shoulder. “Like her.” She shook her head. “But ‘Ponine’s not stupid. She knows her way around.” Marius felt like a demon, using this girl as his personal servant. All of her jokes, her toying… Had this always been the truth? He cursed himself. “Oh-“ “Oh, ‘Ponine, it’s not that way,” She smiled a little. He felt wetness on his neck, but the rain was no longer falling. “Still a gentleman, Monsieur.” “Marius,” “Monsieur Marius,” She corrected. For a moment, he hated her. His guilt and shame fell through the haze of numbness she had broken, but he couldn’t bring himself to blame her. She had done what she thought was right and was she even wrong? He didn’t think he could think poorly of her at all. Not anymore. “I don’t want your love,” She whispered. “I know you can’t give it. It’s not mine.” “If I could-“ “Just hold me now and let it be.” She pressed her face harder against him. “Have me,” She added. A dozen negative responses ran through his mind. The first was that he was slime and the rest unfolded her life where she had tried to exchange pleasure for love. The sorrow he had felt thinking of what she could have been multiplied itself by thirty and he felt like scum. But if that’s how she felt now? Could he really deny her that? Yes, he would be scum by perpetuating it, but what was the alternative? Turning her down? Breaking his ties with Cosette? He scorned the thought. No, it was even more. She had something Cosette did not. Although her face was worn from her life, she was the kind of woman no man can ignore. Her curves and her voice. Now they were pressed against him. “Monsieur?” She asked. He took her by the shoulders and gently pushed her aside. She nodded and began to collect her clothes when he pressed his lips to hers. Her eyes opened wide and then she swooned into his arms. He held her tight as his tongue slipped past her lips and into her mouth. It danced with hers and he relished in the stickiness, the wetness, the sensation of her tongue against his. It was enough for him to feel the heat rush back. He wanted his fingers everywhere on her body, but he needed to return the favor first. He drew back and began to unbutton his shirt. She smirked at him and hooked her thumbs back in her pants. She watched hungrily as his skin came into view. First it was just his arms and then, as he shed his undershirt, his toned chest fed her desires. It was as gorgeous as she had ever imagined when she was with other men. He hesitated just a second, but then his fingers were undoing his pants and dropping them. He kicked off his boots and his underwear simultaneously, feeling terribly foolish and exposed. When he looked up, Eponine had shed her clothes as well. His eyes fell to her legs and she grinned as she watched him harden before her eyes. He was drawn to her light golden curls and his fingers found them as hers wrapped around him. Electricity streamlined the process. He moaned into her mouth as their tongues danced in the rain, fingers a flurry of motion as the rain began to fall once more. Marius thought it was a godsend since Eponine seemed unable to control her noises well. She was slick and hot in a way that kept him from playing too long. Before either of them really understood, she was on her back atop the pile of clothes and he was above her, his tongue finding its way down her chest as he fondled her breasts, licking, pinching, and suckling her nipples. She squirmed and moaned beneath him, her legs spread wide open. Although he was inexperienced, the fact that it was him and that he was hungry for her made it the best she had ever had. At last, his face found hers and he looked into her eyes. He reached down to position himself and gather a bit of her juices before pressing his tip into her. She gritted her teeth and hissed, throwing her head back hard enough to remember they were on the street. His eyes rolled back and Eponine flexed her muscles, causing a milking sensation as he was about halfway in, making him shudder. She grinned. Every slimy urchin she had bedded (some unwillingly) had been worth it if it meant she could give him such pleasure. She continued to milk him and, much to his chagrin, he finished as he entered into her completely. He gasped and bucked and she held his head, continuing to milk him and stroking his hair until he finished. It was the first time she had felt a man finish inside of her, but, again, if it was anyone she didn’t mind, it was him. “I,” He panted, trying to pull away. “Hush-a-bye,” She stroked his hair still, kissing his brow and lowering his head to her shoulder. Her legs locked around him, keeping his hips against hers. “Relax, my love.” He felt a pang of guilt. “So short,” He said, coherent speech beyond him. “But good, Monsieur,” She smiled as she stroked his hair. Her left hand roamed his back, savoring the feel of his muscles and his warmth. “Would you like to try once more?” “Can’t,” He said, drifting off. She bent her neck to whisper in his ear. “I need you, Monsieur,” Breathy and hot. “Marius,” He mumbled. “I need you, Marius.” She corrected, feeling his eyebrows raise against her flesh. She smiled. “Good, that’s better…” She wet her lips. “I need you to fuck me, Monsieur.” The words were dirty, ones she found on the street and ones she was always afraid to say in case he would hear. However, sometimes It took something from the street, she thought. He began to harden within her and she felt triumphant. She rolled them over, straddling him with her breasts hanging freely over his face. He looked up at her and at them. She grinned. “Your cock was the biggest I have ever seen,” She said. It was a lie, but it made no difference. He continued to harden, but he cast a glance to the corner. “’Ponine, we’re out in the open,” “A little fall of rain won’t hurt you, Monsieur,” She met his eyes, rocking her hips against his and earning a moan. She would fuck him in front of a thousand people, it made no difference so long as it was him. “Do you like that?” She asked, rocking her hips again and earning a grunt. “I’ve imagined this so many times,” She groaned, starting to ride him at a steady pace. He held her hips as her breasts began to shake in his face. “I’ve imagined that big schoolboy cock in my tight pussy.” She drew her fingers down to his hand, drawing it to her breast. “I’ve imagined your big, strong hands kneading my tits,” She said, her mouth now filthy as she got into it. He stroked her nipple and she moaned loudly. “Oh yes, Monsieur.” Somehow, her fantasies were turning him on as well as her words and he was nearing complete hardness. “Are we ready for another round?” She asked, moving her hips a little faster and he groaned. “Take me, Monsieur,” She asked. He turned her back and started to buck his hips into hers with abandon. “Marius,” He corrected through a groan as he took her, her breasts bouncing wildly in the night. “Marius,” She agreed in a breathy moan that he was sure the city could hear. “Marius,” She groaned as he continued to pump into her ruthlessly. “Oh, Marius…” She bit her lip, whimpering. “I’m going to come, Marius, please, Mon Dieu, don’t stop!” He didn’t. The sound of rain couldn’t drown out the sound of slapping skin and Eponine’s scream as she came, her hips bucking as she milked him once more, this time involuntarily as he pumped her full once more. It was a full minute before she fell flat against the floor, gasping as he fell beside her, his hand over her stomach and his lips on her cheek. She smiled as she caught her breath. “That was the filthiest…” Marius said to no one in particular. “Bring it here,” She opened her mouth, dropping her tongue over her bottom lip. “I’ll make it clean.” He groaned. “Why didn’t we do this sooner, ‘Ponine?” He asked, completely devoid of sense. He was met with silence and then soft sobbing. He opened his eyes to see her trembling and he scooped her up, pulling her into his arms and holding her against his chest. “I’m sorry,” He said. “I’m so sorry, ‘Ponine…” He shut his eyes tightly, singing softly. “Hush-a-bye, Eponine.” He stroked her hair and, after several moments, her tears subsided. Although he knew she was a woman, there were times that he forgot. Now, holding her in his arms, he was ashamed he had ever thought of her as anything but. She was his perfect counterpart and he wished that he had met her sooner. In another time, some other place, maybe they would have… It was useless. “Just hold me now and let it be,” She repeated her earlier words, sensing his guilt. Her fingers came to his hair and her lips turned up to his, stealing a soft kiss from him. In that moment, she had returned from wherever she kept her dark memories and she was once more the brave woman he admired with all of his heart. She rose and picked up her clothes, dressing slowly. Hers was an easy task, but she waited as Marius got to his shaky legs and, after several moments, was finally fully clothed (albeit a bit disheveled). As she pulled on her jacket, he saw a hint of white. Cosette’s letters were all on her gray stationary, which meant that the letter Eponine had was… Anger seized him, but the image of his friend sobbing came to him and squashed it flat. Take care of him, won’t you? If they weren’t Cosette’s words… Did she come back through the battlefield to comfort him? He couldn’t shake it. It was the only way she knew how and it was enough tragedy to successfully kill any ill will. She had her head tilted when he came back to reality and he brought her to his chest, hugging her tightly. She smiled at him and kissed his lips in a way that felt too natural. Another world, another life… Maybe… He tortured himself with the what if’s. They walked back through the camp and, where once there might have been laughter and cheer after their performance, there were only downcast eyes and nods. Would it be better for her to leave or stay? He couldn’t tell. The Barricade was the worst place after the battlefield, he knew. Maybe, if she did it twice… He didn’t have time to speak. She started to climb. “Eponine!” He called up to the top of the Barricade. She looked down at him and smiled. “Monsieur?” She asked. “Marius!” He corrected. “Marius” She laughed, her hair flipping from under her cap. “Eponine, I love yo-“ A shot rang out and her face changed to terror as she began to fall. Marius rushed below her to the shouts of his schoolmates and he caught her on pure adrenaline. There was a dot of red on her chest and a hole the size of a franc. The read began to leak. “’Ponine, oh God, it’s everywhere,” He sobbed, trying to stop her bleeding. She took his hand, her strength too diminished for her to grip it. He squeezed it. “Don’t you fret, Monsieur Marius…” She smiled a little. “I don’t feel any pain…” “If I could heal your wounds…” “Just hold me,” She laid her head on his shoulder as he cradled her. “The rain can’t hurt me, Monsieur.” “Marius,” He said absently, squeezing her against him. “Marius…” She tasted the word once more. “I love…” The words fell from her lips as she went limp. Marius’s wail called up to the sky as his friends fell beside him, holding him and comforting him as best they could. “She will not die in vain,” Enjorlas declared to the sky, his spirit returning. “We fight here in her name.” The sound of gunfire masked Marius’s wails as Valjean wrapped an arm around the boy. He would never speak a word of it to his daughter. Nothing of Marius’s transgression or of Eponine that was.-------------------------------
